this book is 31 pages long and has 13 “jokes” in it - either single-panel gags or longer sequences, all variations on the popular post-bong-hit ruminative theme of “what if dogs were people?”
at this length, it’s basically a pamphlet, but between my compulsive need to review all the books i read, no matter how brief that reading experience is, and the fact that it is just too damn hot today to expect the brain to review any of those big-city books with words in 'em, this is where we are.
it's a fun little snack of a book, and i've enjoyed the premise before, most recently in
Manfried the Man, a similar-but-feline take on the concept - tiny nude humans doing catlike things, while human-sized cats wear clothes and experience dissatisfaction in their jobs and interpersonal relationships.
this one has the potential to be funnier, but even though it is cute and goofy, it is - again - only 31 pages, and not every one of those 13 jokes hits its mark, so i think 3 stars is about right. you want more stars, book? be longer next time! because when you are funny, you are very funny, indeed!

Mr.Oatmeal uses his wit and cool illustration to tickle you with some cool dog related humor. But the problem is... It's all been done before. The biggest innovation in this collection is the substitution of middle-aged men in place of dogs.
This is fun, but dogs texting their owners is still my favorite dog related gag!
Another thing about this collection: It's too damn short! It's just 36 pages and I finished it in like 100 seconds. That was a bit disappointing too.
The description for this coffee table book states this as a perfect gift for a dog owner. I'm not a dog owner. I'm not even a cat owner. I've shared a room with a house lizard (Bob) during my university exam and that's the extent of my animal ownership. So I might not be the best person out there to judge this book!

Hurray! Matthew “The Oatmeal” Inman is back with another fantastic and funny pet-themed comic book, If My Dogs Were a Pair of Middle-Aged Men.
The observations aren’t at all original and any dog owners will be familiar with them: freaking out when you leave, losing their shit when someone knocks on the door, playing with squeaky toys, and eating like slobs, to name a few.
But what makes this book special and uniquely hilarious is Matt’s dogs are envisioned as two fat old men: one who looks like Uncle Fester and one who looks like Ignatius J. Reilly!
Watching this pair of lunatics doing everyday doggy things is ludicrously funny - I was laughing the whole way through! Kudos to Matt for such an inspired concept. It helps that Matt is a super-talented cartoonist who knows how to perfectly sell the jokes in comics format.
At under 40 pages, this one’s a lot shorter than his other books but it’s an ideal gift book for dog owners and/or fans of The Oatmeal. As both of those things, I loved it - an excellent comedy read and highly recommended for anyone looking for a chuckle! -

Inman's humor manages to simultaneously be both flamboyant and insightful (as perfectly illustrated by the title: IF MY DOGS WERE A PAIR OF MIDDLE-AGED MEN, b/c, you know, why not?), the combination making your sides ache with laughter.

I was laughing my head off while reading this comic book. Most probably those who own a pet dog or had one before, could relate much to the comic strips. I was thinking of our dogs' behaviors the entire time I was reading this and my verdict? The Oatmeal really made an accurate depiction of how dogs behave.

This is exactly why I love being a book blogger - free copies of books by my favorite authors to review. (Okay, I lied - that's not the only reason; but it's a very definitive perk.)
I've been following the Oatmeal since 2009, and thought it was The Best Thing Ever. He's crude, but in a way that adds rather than detracts from his art, and somehow manages to find a way of looking at even the most tedious of life's moments and finding a way of making it either seem novel, hilarious, or outlandish.
Case in point: IF MY DOGS WERE A PAIR OF MIDDLE-AGED MEN.
We all think dogs are cute, right?
Well, it turns out...dogs are sort of creepy. And what better way to illustrate those kind of creepy behaviors than by portraying his pet dogs as...two middle-aged men.
Since I follow his website religiously (as I mentioned before), there is a major downside to this ARC: I've read all these comics before - and I didn't recognize any new ones. It seems like these were just the Middle-Aged Men comics from his site packaged into a collector's volume, either for die-hard fans who want this book for their IKEA coffee tables or as novelty gifts for people who haven't read his comics yet (but should). I felt like I kind of fell in the middle in terms of readership, here.
I always enjoy reading The Oatmeal's work, so I can't really give this less than three stars. But I think if I'd paid money for this, I'd be really disappointed. I'd be happy to be supporting such a talented artist, but also sad that my hard-earned money bought me a very short book with no new material.

This was hilarious! I've seen The Oatmeal's comics floating around on the internet but I've never actually read more than a few panels in passing. I wanted to read this because it sounded funny and because it's about dogs - dogs are my life so it seemed like a real no-brainer. Turns out this book is genius! I am a dog owner so I could relate to most of this book. You don't realise how weird dogs are until you imagine them as middle-aged men!
This is laugh-out-loud funny and I just want to say that I died laughing at the SLORP panels because I've been in Matthew's position SO MANY TIMES. I wish it was a little longer because I didn't want it to end. The idea might seem simple, and it is, but it is brilliant. I would definitely recommend this to others and I would read more by The Oatmeal.

Matthew Inman/The Oatmeal' thing.
While
If My Dogs Were a Pair of Middle-Aged Men did give me smiles and exactly one chuckle, it's far from the humor I generally see in Inman's collection of graphic novels. I liked that it gave English-speaking dialogue to funny dog behavior that every dog-owner will be able to relate to, and my dog loved that the reading experience made me want to play with him directly after. So overall, it was definitely worth the minutes it took me to read it. If you're a fan of this cartoonist, then consider checking it out!

This is such a crazy and hilarious book! The sight of a hairy grown man and a grown bald man as dogs is so silly that it makes a person giggle just looking at them. Then the silly cartoons put them in situations of dogs that really set off the giggle factor. Fun book, messes with the funny bone! -
I generally love Matthew Inman and The Oatmeal, but this is probably my least favorite "theme" of all of his comics. It had its cute moments, but all in all, I'm not super entertained by cartoons of middle-aged men licking their own butts? I dunno - pass for me.

I have been following The Oatmeal for years and I love the innovative comics Matthew Inman comes up with and I was definitely pleased when I discovered that the comic was available in an ebook format.
In If My Dogs Were a Pair of Middle-Aged Men, Inman imagines what it would be like if his two pet dogs were middle-aged men. (spoiler alert: it would be hilarious for a bystander, for Inman, not so much)
As a dog lover and owner of a badly behaved snotty dog myself, I could relate to the comic a lot.
Conclusion: Dogs are extremely creepy when they are two legged paunchy guys who lick their private bits just for the lulz. -
I love absurdity. That may be part of the reason I love dogs so much, they naturally seem to have a happy absurdity about them. This brief book of cartoons adds another element of silliness by depicting the author's two dogs as middle aged men. It's a little weird, especially since my favorite was about bath time, so I have to still think of them as dogs, because if I overthink it as two actual middle aged men with the younger man who takes them outside on a leash, it gets weird. Best to avoid any literal association and enjoy the silliness. Anyone who has had the pleasure of living with dogs should appreciate this book and will likely finish wanting more.

It is my bad, when I didn't enjoy the previous books I shouldn't have touched this one but I did and I didn't like it either I don't find this kind of humour (if you call it humour coz I won't) funny.
It's just not for me. Not going to pick up anything by this author anymore. -
I was enthusiastic about reading this book because it's by "The Oatmeal". I didn't love it, but since I don't have a dog I guess I'm not the target audience. It did bring a smile on my face though. Would recommend to dog lovers.

In the best traditions of the Oatmeal humour I know and love, Matthew Inman gives us a look at what life would be like if his dogs were middle-aged men (presumably only on the outside, though I'll admit some of these are a bit ambiguous).
A really great collection, definitely a good pressie if you have any dog lovers (or middle aged men) in your life. -
This is my second favorite Matthew Innman book about dogs. The first is obviously My Dog The Paradox. That book was amazing on so many levels. This book was funny on a different level. Relatable and ridiculous but funny all the same.

Really hilarious, quite accurate (at least, if you have such a terror dog like ours) and perfect as a gift (we gave it to our grandmother and she loved it). Why not giving it five stars? It’s just too damn short!

Never have drawings of middle-aged men so accurately captured canine behaviour. All dog owners should read this, and all dog owners will recognise how these two middle-aged men behave.

I got this book to cheat the system*, but then I never got around to using it.
But I just read it to my kids and their friends during a sleepover last night. They seemed to enjoy it.
It's pretty good. It's kindof funny. Nothing really stood out to me, though.
It was short enough (probably the shortest book of the year) that I may be willing to give another Oatmeal book a shot.
*We have an Adult Summer Reading Program at our Public Library. I always read quite a few books, but I'm often reading books that I don't check out. We're only allowed to enter with books we check out - and I think we can only enter books that are checked out of the adult section... Since this book was in the adult section, I checked it out over the summer so I could enter it.
I refuse to game the system by not reading, but I'm A-Okay with gaming the system by reading short books - but ONLY until they equal the number of books that I've read outside of the library system.
It didn't come to that this year. And I didn't read this book in time. And I didn't win. -
if you have a dog ...and you swear your dog is human you will insanely relate to this. After reading this crazy short book you may never be able to imagine your dogs not as very fat middle aged men again. I think my favorite comic I may have ever witnessed is of the two middle aged men "cleaning" themselves while the humans sleep and it is displayed as that gross sound that for some reason makes you blood curl. This book is hilarious and if you enjoy Oatmeal comedy then this is a must have to add to your hilarious collection. I would post images but the book is so short it may just ruin it for you!
