Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine, January/February 2017 [#904 \u0026 #905] Reviews

This issue began EQMM's new publication schedule transitioning from ten issues [with two "double" issues] per year to a mere 6 "double" issues. The most disappointing adjustment for me to this new schedule is that my favorite issues, January's Holiday themed EQMM & February's Sherlock Holmes EQMM, will now be combined. Alas!
That disappointment aside, there were pleasures to be found. Highlights for me include:
--Terence Faherty's latest Holmes pastiche of "The Engineer's Thumb" where the conceit remains that these are the recently discovered first drafts of Watson's accounts. Admittedly these are made more enjoyable to readers familiar with the Doyle originals.
--Nova Lee Maier's "After Closing Time" from the Passport to Crime section featuring international stories usually translated into English. This suspenseful gem was a truly riveting read and will forever have me looking suspiciously at those festive Holiday mannequin displays in department stores.
