An awesome graphic novel full of beautiful illustrations depicting the life and bravery of Harriet Tubman. I used this for our homeschool for a unit study. It was way more fun reading a graphic novel vs the books full of just facts. I recommend it for teachers or other homeschoolers to use for their students for unit studies, Black History, or History in general. To make it a little more fun learning about important people in our countries history.

This is a very good basic history book. While the intended audience is probably kids, I learned a few things to. Things I perhaps had been taught when we covered Harriet Tubman back in very early elementary school and I forgot them, but I suspect a few that never came up in class. Of course I knew that she was a tremendous hero because of her actions as a conductor on the Underground Railroad. I didn't know or perhaps remember that she was also of great service during the Civil War, setting up facilities for former slaves to work cleaning the soldiers clothes and to help nurse wounded soldiers, and acting as a nurse herself. And then she become a tremendously successful scout and spy for the war effort over enemy lines. After the war she was a suffragette and greatly in demand as a speaker in those circles. But I like that the book didn't sugar-coat the realities of the time, they also showed that despite her great accomplishments she was also treated terribly at times. Like despite her great service to our country, on her way home from the war a conductor wouldn't let her ride in the car with her well-earned her army-issued fare. Three conductors dragged her out of the car and she broke her arm, injuring her more on the ride home than during the entire war. I felt like the book tried to give an accurate representation of the emotional impact slavery had on the very real people who were caught up in it, bringing them to life and off the pages of a book. It showed how Harriet was taken away from her family as a child, how her fate was never in her own hands, how as a very young child she was beaten for things she couldn't control. But it doesn't make it too graphic that kids can't handle it too. It just made her feel like a real person, not just a vague historical hero. It was just 100 years ago that Harriet passed away, not so long at all. We haven't come far enough in that time, we just haven't. And it's just beyond me, I just don't understand why everyone doesn't want this American hero on the $10 bill. She had my vote before I read this book and after I'm even more convinced. So it's quite a good little book, I'd recommend it for reluctant readers or people who like history.

A very well done biography in a graphic novel format. The life of Harriet Tubman, beginning with how her grandparents may have ended up as slaves, and her early life, this book eventually leads into her work on the Underground Railroad, and in the Civil War, including many of the heroic deeds which she did to free as many slaves as possible, and help them in any way she could. This book also recounts some of the injustices done to her- both in her time as a slave, and in her time as a free woman, but emphasizes how hard she worked to do right, ending by touching on her involvement in the suffrage movement.
Overall, a really well done book, very accessible for kids and teens wanting to learn more about an awesome woman of color!

There are a many impressive images of the life and trials of Harriet Tubman presented in the drawings in the collection. In addition to wonderful and vivid images, there is a wealth of information about the many important events in the life of Harriet Tubman from her young life to her work as a conductor on the underground railroad, and her important work for the Union Army during the Civil War. The graphic novel presents a well-rounded view of the life of Harriet Tubman from birth to death and also highlights her effect on the times and people she came into contact with. Overall, it is an important story with excellent images to supplement the breadth of information in the story.

the subject matter here is SUPER important.

but. this production is unimpressive. the cover looks white washed, the story doesnt really focus on tubman, the narrative is very awkward and i feel like 2005 couldve tried harder.

Non-fiction graphic novels are one thing all school libraries should have available for their students. A lot of kids, not just reluctant readers, have little interest in reading even a small non-fiction chapter book. This graphic story of Harriet Tubman will give readers an overall glimpse into what life was like in America during the 1800's and of course plenty of information about General Tubman's tragic but fascinating life. This book alone would not be enough to do a complete book report, but it would get interest up and students can use it as a timeline and more easily gather additional facts from other resources to complete their paper.
