"Dummy Spit" is the first major poetry collection by Mark Laba, a long-time veteran of the Canadian small press scene. Equal parts hardcore surrealism and Yiddish vaudeville, Mark Laba's poetry is elliptical, crass, hilarious, lightning-fast, and oddly lyrical. Whether Laba is plumbing the depths of ventriloquism or taking to the high seas on a Henny Youngmanesque voyage of discovery, he shocks, enthralls, and amuses. To read these poems is to juggle hot potatoes, blindfolded and without oven mitts. Mark Laba is an important voice in Canadian poetry, and this collection will finally bring his work to a larger audience.

OK, truth is, I edited this book. The Mercury Press told me I could shepherd any book I wanted through their imprint, and I felt that what Canada most lacked was a trade collection by Mark Laba, a literary genius and one of the worst promoters ever of his own writing.

At first, I imagined bringing together a sort of Selected collection of Mark's ephemera, as published by the micropresses Curvd H&z, his own In Tents, my Proper Tales, and others. But soon it was apparent that a stronger collection would be comprised of Mark's more recent work.

This is probably one of the strangest and funniest books of poetry ever published in this country. I'd be surprised if it sold more than 25 copies. There is absolutely no one who writes poetry quite like Mark does.

I can't recommend this strongly enough to people who like their poetry bizarre, adventurous, and edgy. Mark Laba is the real thing.
