This catalog is perfect if you're new to the DC and/or Vertigo comics. It's just as perfect if you're not so new.

What I liked the most was the part where you get a chronological reading order. If you wish to know more about Superman & co, and you're unsure where to start, the catalog will help you.

There are also a few iconic comics presented, along with comments from the media. I was pleasantly surprised to see some that I've already read. Also, I marked as to read some that sounded really good (I am especially impressed with Vertigo. I'm not sure I read anything and I'm considering
    V for Vendetta or
Preacher, Volume 1: Gone to Texas as a starting point). I like the darker, edgier feel to Vertigo.

You'll also find a section dedicated to upcoming movies and TV shows, again, with comics recommendations.

Bottom line is I highly recommend the catalog.

    Book Review
Book Title: DC Essential Graphic Novels 2017

Introduction: I LOVE comic books and graphic novels, and I LOVE superheroes (you can often find me lurking in the graphic novel section of any bookstore I go to...maybe for a bit longer than necessary!). It is very obvious to anyone who has met me that I am obsessed with everything DC and I'm uber fond of Marvel. So, when I got the chance to read and review a graphic novel from the DC collection I was over the moon excited and I hopped on it immediately.

I received this book for free through Netgalley for an honest review.

    Review:

The first comic was The Flash and he is holding this exact graphic novel in his hand. It's quite amusing, and it's totally in the Flash's realm to do this. He's always a comic relief!!! The artwork is impressive in this initial comic, which impressed me. The Flash discusses the comics that will be featured within the novel all while saving the day!! What a great way to start a graphic novel!!

This graphic novel is an introduction to the DC comic book line up and I definitely suggest it to anyone trying to get a basic start within this massive series of comic books. You get a little pinch of many titles and this can help readers figure out which comic book characters and series are best for them! Every comic book character/series has a different tone and might not match every reader so it is important to be informed!

Some of the comics/characters introduced within this series: Green Lantern, The Flash, Wonder Woman, Superman, The Justice League, Harley Quinn and the Suicide Squad as well as collectibles, suggested reading orders and back list (plus an ordering list!).

Each series is described and showcased at the beginning of this graphic novel. For example, the Watchmen are given a description for a general reader to understand what they are about and some of the characters. This series is described as grim and psychological realism - this can assist readers who do not want a gritty, real story to make an informed decision on what series to read or delve into.

Readers also get a sneak peak at artwork and covers, which showcases the illustrators wonderful artwork! Some of my first comic books I became interested in were just because of the artwork - you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover, but sometimes that introduces you to books you never thought you'd like!

Some of my favourite parts of this graphic novel include:
The Batgirl art and comic book - oh how I love her!
Batman: The Killing Joke - I have this graphic novel, but I always love seeing it pop up everywhere! It's perhaps my favourite graphic novel of all time (so far...).
Justice League Origin Vol 1 Cover - I love superhero team up covers!
Everything Harley Quinn - I love this character, and seeing her pop up made my heart swell!! I try to pick up every comic book and graphic novel I find involving her!
DC: The New Frontier - this Justice League comic book has a very different art style than the typical Justice League stories, so it was great to see this line of comics shown off within this graphic novel.
DC Universe: Rebirth - Again, seeing the different styles and editions makes a great introduction to new (and old!) comic book enthusiasts!
Injustice Gods Among Us - For fans of the video game, there is in fact a graphic novel with the same name!!
Gotham Academy - I had never heard of this series before I noticed it in this book! So I'm pleased to see a small introduction floating around!
Aquaman - I have so many Aquaman comics hiding in my house, how could I not love seeing him showcased in this graphic novel?!
Birds of Prey - For those not introduced to the Birds of Prey, it follows some of the major female characters in the DC universe. Girl power!!
Nightwing - I haven't seen as much of Nightwing lately as I would like to, so a splash of Nightwing makes my day!
Red Hood and the Outlaws - Another great character I haven't seen floating around as much as I would like!
Teen Titans - For a very long time I have been obsessed with the Teen Titans, yet I've only seen the animated series getting more attention than the fantastic comic books.
Modern Classics section - While the old graphic novels are fantastic, some of the newer graphic novels and comic books have been hitting me the right way. Seeing a whole section on this fantastic selection is great in my eyes.

There's also a little introduction to the current Zack Snyder film universe and DCEU on television and the comic books that influenced them/readers could enjoy.

Overall, I thought this was a great introduction to many comic books. This graphic novel would be fantastic for anyone wanting to get into the DC universe but not knowing where to start! I wish I had this when I started my obsession in June 2016!!

    Five out of five stars.

Side note: I am now using the selected backlist to make sure I read in the correct order and not purchase second copies of comic books and graphic novels. How helpful!!!

A big thanks to D.C. Comics and Netgalley for this free copy in exchange for an honest review.
I grew up around comics. My mother started my brother's collection when he was about eight years old. He's now 42. His collections have won world class awards. I thought I'd get an education. This seemed like a good place to start.
A perfect guide to the reinvented works of D.C. It has details on the entire heroic oeuvre from Superman to The Preacher. Illustrations include character development through the years. Villains are included.
When I decide to purchase this will be a perfect manual to follow. Synopses are provided of each series so I know what sounds interesting to me.
Great job D.C. compiling your annual catalog! I'm sure you'll garner much curiosity.

    Collection at Doorsteps

Very good collection of all the DC comics. All the magazine lovers will surely gonna love it, Like me. Best thing is the sequence is mentioned for the simplicity to pick each one of these without confusion in missing any part in series.

I thick this it's a pretty fair collection s of graphic novel recommendation, I have not much to add, for a person who wants to know in what order or what to read I think it a solid dial.

DC Essential Graphic Novels 2017 proves to be a very helpful guide to people new to DC's Universe.

The first point goes to the great cover, I love it!!

To me, the main focus is the list of 25 Essential Graphic Novels, but throughout the whole guide, the different synopsis of each comic series and the comments from the media help to get you instantly interested in them.
You can also find a list of the DC comics' reading order and a section dedicated to upcoming movies and TV shows, along with comics recommendations.

I have noted down a list of comics I would like to read (
Batman: The Killing Joke is on top of it since I already own it but I haven't read it yet. Anyway, if you're wondering, some of them are:
    Watchmen,
Wonder Woman: Earth One, Vol. 1,
Harley Quinn (2016-) Vol. 1: Die Laughing,
iZombie, Vol. 1: Dead to the World and
Fables, Vol. 1: Legends in Exile) — so I think the guide excellently fulfilled its purpose!!

I was given a copy by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review:

This is an introduction to the DC catalog for newcomers to the Comics. This has almost the entire DC catalog from Batman, Superman to their lesser-known titles. From Comic books to graphic novels to shows and movies based on DC comics. Plus information about different action figures and also the reading order. In one word - Everything DC. Keep on reading.

I have always loved comics, and I hope that I will always love them. Even though I grew up reading local Indian comics like Raj Comics or Diamond Comics or even Manoj Comics, now's the time to catch up on the international and classic comics and Graphic novels. I am on my quest to read as many comics as I can. I Love comics to bit, may comics never leave my side. I loved reading this and love reading more, you should also read what you love and then just
    Keep on Reading.

I received a free copy of DC Essential Graphic Novels 2017 in exchange for my honest opinion.

You would not believe how excited I was for this. I know that that probably does not make sense as this will rarely change with the ‘must read books’ as they have been around for a long time. But I always find it interesting to see what DC has released and if any of the previous years releases will have been good enough to make their way into this. Also, with DC reboot their comic books last year with their Rebirth initiative; so the layout will have to change from the previous years as the New 52 had been running from August 31 2011.

I am very proud of myself to be able to say that I have read quite a few books that appear in here now! This time last year I had read a grand total of 0 comics that I had read, of how it has changed since then. Also, reading DC Essential Graphic Novels 2017 reminded me of some graphic novels that I plan on reading soon, like The Killing Joke and Preacher to name a few.

I was very glad to see recommendations based on the DCEU movies coming out in 2017, Wonder Woman and Justice League. Even thought their first three movies may not have been critically well received (I personally loved Batman V Superman and Suicide Squad), their is no doubting that most people are rooting for DC to get it right.

Even if you read DC Essential Graphic Novels 2016, I would still say read the 2017 edition as it is a good way to remind yourself of a potential reread or one you mat have not gotten around to reading yet. And if you have not read any of DC Essential Graphic Novels, then pick them up! They are a great way to make sure that you do not get confused as to what you should read.

    5/5 Stars (%89/100)

Probably the best graphic novel I've ever read. (In terms of handbook or guide) If you are new to reading comics this is probably a gold mine for you. Even when you are not very new, it is still useful. I am more or less familiar with graphic novels but I often find myself confused since there are so many materials out there. There are also other graphic novels that make everything even more complicated because of the different time period that they deal with. In short, you need some kind of a guide so as not to lose interest in comics.

The book talks about 25 essential graphic novels briefly to introduce them. Though I expected only that, it offers much more. The authors give detailed timeline and outline of specific superheroes. There are also other lists like reading list for all DC novels and so on. On top of that, the book is free and I am pretty sure I'll be coming back to it often.

  • Destiny Unlocked

I love how in depth the author went to explain stories that are vital into getting into the D.C. Universe. It was very easy to read the different synopsis of each comic series. Also adding in what others have said about each one was also helpful in getting someone interested in these wonderful characters. Just the idea of a book that helps you locate what to read in order to jump into this world is amazing to itself.

  • Liezl Ruiz

DC Essential Graphic Novels 2017 is definitely a very helpful guide to people new to DC comics. People like me who are just familiar with the world of DC find this catalog a pleasant companion in the quest of finding that satisfying origin story. I use the word satisfying since our favorite heroes had been "killed" and "revived" countless of times by different writers and brought to life with their own renditions by different artists.

It's nice to note that by the sheer number of pages in this book will make you see the differences in the artistic styles of different artists. What I'm surprised about was that I really don't care how simple the drawing style is (DC: The New Frontier) so long as the storyline is epic. I usually go for the more detailed art, that shining shimmering splendid work of colors. And like what the bromance duo Ben Affleck and guest pointed out in the latest Oscars,

The great Alfred Hitchcock was once asked, "What are the key elements of making a memorable movie?"

He said, "To make a great film you need three things: the script, the script, and the script.'"

I'm geared towards the story over art so I'm really grateful for the 25 essential graphic novels which you'll see right after The Flash's comical skit in introducing what this book is all about (not counting the contributors' page and table of contents). I'm surprised really when The Flash made the introduction instead of the Amazonian warrior right on the cover. Perhaps, it should be Flash who's on the cover instead of Wonderwoman. Well, that's just my two cent. The Flash is definitely hot right now on TV.

The blurbs by various reviewers are just both overwhelming and intimidating that I'm at a loss for words in how to even review this book. How am I supposed to top those? They're really helpful though and they shape what emotions I'm supposed to feel for each graphic novel even before I get to lay my hands on them. For example, I think I like the grimdark and gritty Preacher. Being from a religious Roman Catholic country, despite having my views changed when it comes to religion now that I'm an adult, I can't help but go back to being a helpless child and feel all this darkness and fear when it comes to the talk of angels and demons.

For Fables Vol 1: Legends in Exile, I'm reminded by the fiction of the fictional stories of Grimm's fairytales of the TV hit series, Once Upon a Time. I remember loving the animated film, Flashpoint so much with its go-back-in-time/change-the-future Flash plot and for the first time, I saw Batman cry. And that's in front of The Flash.

I think I'm going to like Gotham Academy since the Nerdist described it as having a touch of manga. In all honesty, I prefer manga over comics (unless the graphic novel has the influence of the style of manga) because manga elicits more emotions whereas the style of comics is more plot-driven and action sequences. The manga has a lot of breather where you get to be suspended with a simple dialog with a background image that sets the mood. It's as if the manga has its own background music.

Dark Knight: A True Batman Story was scary and harrowing. I was instantly taken to my old dose of horror manga when I was 12. I miss what it was like to be naive and easily scared (because I love to be scared, just not with terrorism). What's scarier? This graphic novel is based on a true story.

As a new DC comics fan, if you're dedicated in diving into the world of your chosen superheroes, there are pages with suggested reading order. Look at this page about Batman:

There are tons of other golly goodness in this book. Take the plunge and enjoy your entry into the world of DC Universe or shall I say Multiverse.

This is a really useful guide for anyone trying to decide how to get into comics/graphic novels, or what to buy/read next. It provides a synopsis, review quotes and images from 25 of the most "essential" novels from DC to date, as well as a suggested reading order for Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Suicide Squad, Flash, Robin and more.

Some of the most important graphic novels, according to this guide, include Watchmen, Batman: The Killing Joke, The Sandman, V for Vendetta, Gotham Academy and Flashpoint. Of course, there are 19 more novels listed, too.

The guide includes stand alone novels, and Vertigo novels. There is a section dedicated to comics inspiring and inspired by TV shows or films, such as iZombie (a personal favourite that I'm dying to read). As well as a backlist for every DC and Vertigo graphic novel, the guide includes a selection of different collectables available.

Everything listed in this book has an RRP included, and the ISBN (and lots of other details) to make it easy for anyone to find and buy. The authors and artists are all credited, too.

The layout of the suggested reading order pages could've been a bit clearer, I feel, but I think this guide served its purpose pretty well. 3.5 stars.

I received an advance reading copy of this book, for free, through Goodreads First Reads program in exchange for my honest review.

Whether you read comics regularly, or are considering picking up a comic book for the first time, DC Essential Graphic Novels 2017 is a helpful guide for all. The catalog begins with a listing of the 25 Essential Graphic Novels of All-Time. From there, the essential graphic novels of each individual character from the DC Universe are listed. Graphic novels featuring Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Justice League, and more are presented in the order in which it is recommended they be read. Another section features graphic novels which tie-in to the storylines relating to DC films (Wonder Woman, Justice League, etc.), DC television shows (Supergirl, Arrow, The Flash, etc.), and even DC video games (Injustice 2).

DC Essential Graphic Novels 2017 serves its purpose well. Longtime comic book fans can use the catalog as a checklist to make sure that they have read every graphic novel in which their favorite character has appeared. Novices can use the catalog to decide which comics to read, and where to begin. This is a very useful resource for anyone interested in DC Comics.

I would like to thank NetGalley and D.C. Comics for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

As an almost complete newbie to sequential art, I found this a quite interesting catalog and guide to DC and Vertigo graphic novels and comics. The initial list of 25 essential graphic novels is a good starting point and many of them are now on my TBR list.
The next essential graphic novel lists with the suggested reading order are also quite useful if you wish to read more on the universe of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Justice League, The Flash, Green Lantern or The Suicide Squad. In any case, this is a good place to start your list of comics to read.

  • Jill Jemmett

This is a great catalog of the titles DC Comics is releasing in 2017. I have just started reading DC comics this year, so I liked this overview of everything they publish.

There are many choices in here that I probably wouldn't have known about otherwise. Many of their older, classic titles are in here too.

This catalog is great for new readers and older fans of DC Comics.

I received a copy of this catalog from NetGalley in exchange for a review.

  • Ash Mill

I enjoyed going through this. It was a great guide to know and having the knowledge of what comics were starting new in the rebirth and having a description of the comic along with its title and release date is incredible. I enjoyed that it also had comics from both DC and Vertigo listed. I liked the collectibles page. And I really appreciate the recommended list for reading order. I plan on using that. I think this is a great and useful guide for comic lovers!

  • Dave

As someone who has not opened a comic book in forty years and has just stepped into the wondrous world of graphic novels, I found this catalog to be invaluable in explaining all of DC Comics' series and the various story arcs. There are so many different story arcs even with the major characters that it's hard to get it all straight without a guide. This catalog is presented in vibrant colors and is very well designed.

  • Cande

Copy by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I really liked this guide, it was very helpful and fun. If you want to pick up DC comics but don't know where to start, this guide would be great for you. DC universe is huge and can be confusing, and this guide recommends you titles and a reading order. Great, right?

  • Zac Stojcevski

A catalogue essentially with cover artwork and paragraph descriptions of the graphic novels also extending into figurines, DVD s and games. Handy listing at back of suggested reading order of dc comics and back catalogues. Kindle lured me to this, thinking that it was a review and my commitment to persistence meant I had to read it to the end.

  • Leanne Schneider

This is great. But not perfect. The list leaves out a lot of important books (talking about Wonder Woman only--as that is my focus) But still a great book. I received it for free on Wonder Woman Day at my local bookstore

  • Maeghin

If you wanted to start reading DC graphic novels and didn't know where to start this is the perfect guide to refer to! Everything you need to know is here, including the order in which you should read them.

  • Máire

This isn't even a comic book. It's a list of comic books coming out. Disappointing.
