Brezhnev: The Masks of Power Reviews
-
Fascinating book as I grew up in the fossilized Brezhnev period. Published in 1974, this book is before the fall of the Soviet Union. As such, it gives an interesting and still refreshing perspective on this politician and the options that existed in that period. The fall was not necessary, Brezhnev was much more energetic than after the mid-seventies. The book also implies something that is still true: in Russia, or the ex-Soviet Union, political classes chose their leader and the not other way round. It is still the case under the Putin-period. Leaders can modify, but when they seem to be passive, it is not only their personal choice what follows from their activities. There is a "system" that must be maintained. Even though, the system and its maintenance is quite illogical from a Western perspective ( which is based on free-spirit, free activites, market-driven approach, material growth).
If you have an opportunity, read this book - which was written much earlier than the fall of communism, which later made inevitable conclusions about the course of history that we are still relying on.
