The 15 Unbreakable Rules for Building Grit and Achieving Your Dreams!
Psychologists tell us that the secret to a successful and happy life, more than anything else, is something called GRIT. Defined as the willpower to persevere with passion and a sense of purpose, research shows that grit is what matters most in whether a person succeeds or fails.
That same research shows that previous generations had a lot more grit than today’s younger generations. This isn’t surprising. After all, most of us would agree that those older, wiser, and tougher members of the Greatest Generation are prime examples of what it means to persevere, to never back down, and to make sacrifices for a greater purpose. We could all use more of the OLD SCHOOL GRIT they embraced.
In this inspirational fable, Bob Flanagan represents the voice of old school grit. A legendary college basketball coach who thinks like John Wooden and talks like Mike Ditka, Flanagan is entering the final days of his coaching career. While his team tries to advance through the NCAA postseason tournament, Flanagan uses his last days as a coach to write his grandchildren letters revealing the rules for a successful and happy life. The rules of grit.
Though Coach Flanagan’s letters are intended for his grandchildren, they might as well be for America in general. This is a man who lives by the old school code of faith, family, courage, and character; and he believes too many people have gone soft these days. They give up on their dreams too easily. They whine, complain, and pass the blame. They spend all their time and energy trying to avoid challenges instead of bucking up and powering through them.
Flanagan’s letters are a rallying cry for toughening up and building grit. His fifteen rules provide a clear path to success in any endeavor.
Consider this book an instruction manual for getting back to the values that truly lead to success and developing the type of old school grit that will get you through anything.
Old School Grit: Times May Change, But the Rules for Success Never Do (Sports for the Soul Book 2) Reviews

A very simple, straightforward read. Started off slow for me but I’m glad I didn’t put it down. This book is great. The way it was written is unique too, letters by a legendary basketball coach on his way out to the pearly gates to his granddaughter; sharing to her some really valuable life lessons. This book was recommended to me by my flight commander.

Quick easy captivating motivated convitcting read
Loved the character and his situation. Loved how it felt like I was about to share in on his letters to his grandkids almost like they let me read them
The points stood out strong and they were as motivational as they were convicting at many points I found myself whispering...thats me..
Lastly this book is an easy read it's not just for sports people (because I am not one in any sense of the word) it's for anyone who wants to develop that mental toughness (that grit) to push though obstacles embrace pressure and finish strong.
Would recommend to the ADHD community for sure! And just about anyone I meet! -
True Grit - not as outdated as folks think
Another good read for folks in a leadership position. However, Darrin had a habit of repeating the same points over and over in each chapter. The book really could have been much shorter and still get the 15 rules of success covered.
Fleshing our conversations with players, assistant coaches, family members such as a few of the grandkids would have been a better approach for filler material that covered each rule.
All and all though I’d recommend it. -
Motivational talk but not very deep
Darrin Donnelly delivers a comforting story about hard work and grit as told by a fictional basketball coach.
Anyway, I don't think there is a lot about mental toughness that I would call outstanding, the author vaguely touches on why the new generations lack grit and even there I don't agree about some of the few points presented.
If you want to be entertained with a motivational story, give it a try. -
So, if I’d realized it was fiction before I started..... my library has this in the self-help section. While I get that it reads like a how to achieve success manual via letters written to grandchildren; but the fact the it isn’t real turned me off. I’m not sure how I missed that fact!?! But, I think, folks who like this kind of book will enjoy it. I’m just not that into rah rah books.

The message and 15 rules are good things to abide by. Some of the examples are a little too "old school" to really be relatable to the modern athlete/coach/society. I think were better ways to get the messages across than to denigrate aspects of current society and efforts around wellness and mindset.

Feel inspired!
A quick read that makes you feel good throughout the book.
It’s inspirational and quite honestly gives some common sense advice that too many of us ignore or forget.
Worth the time. -
It’s sort of a cheesy format, but the rules of grit are solid and a great ideology for any coach or athlete. It’s an easy read, but really great content, so if you can get past the fictional narrative then it’s a good read.

Great baseline
As an author myself, what I love about this book is the transparency the author brings to the topic. You get a real sense that he's lived it through the stores and presentation. -
Fácil de leer
Muy buen libro. Te mantiene interesado todo el tiempo y es fácil sentirte identificado varias veces a lo largo de libro. -
Preachy, repetitive, and not really what I thought it was going to be. I did appreciate the quotes at the start of each chapter.
-
Simple read that speaks so much truth and woke me up for sure! Great read for athletes, business people.
-
Straight forward 15 rules to success. No extra fluff you normally find in self help books.
-
Great series
I haven't been able to put this series down. Though it full of cliche, I find that these books are a great way to pass the time.
