A tale of lost innocence, shame & determined love.

Two secrets kept Grace Oldfield imprisoned in the dark recesses of her mind and a third had the power to set her free- the drunk, frailty and desire for her brother’s best friend, the Earl of Stafford. Only loving Stafford required confidence and courage, neither of which came easily to Grace. Running and hiding, that she could do if Stafford would only let her go.

“Well, why did you run?” probed Stafford gently.

Grace was at a loss for words. Fight suddenly left her. Her feet felt leaden and her body was tired of the pretence. Maybe I can share one secret. Just one. Grace raised her frightened eyes to look at Stafford, her fiancé. If he truly loves me, then maybe he will understand…

I love Nicci Mayne's stories because they are romantic, poetic and tragic. All her main characters survive terrible experiences. They are abused, beaten, neglected by their own family, suffer from disabilities, only to find rescue and peace in a love match.

"Fractured - A reluctant Lord's fate" is the most painful story of all, considering it tells of a childhood abuse and following mental disorder. The cliffhangers in a love story between a fractured young lady and a melancholic young lord are heartbreaking. He tries as much as he can to fight all the girl's sudden terrors and tentatives to disappear under the cover of oblivion. He wants to save her from her unimaginable fears with love and patience, but unfortunately, he is very fragile too and fails several times to be a shelter for his lifetime love.

Recommended novel if you prefer a different kind of historical romance, full of angst. Stories where lords and ladies are not only handsome, but have the courage to face incredible psychological sufferings.
