    Wow!

I enjoyed reading Beast's Tale more than Belle's Tale. The way this manga shows emotions of anger, fear, uncertainty, contentment and happiness on Beast's face is just amazing. The artist has done a great job!

It may sound ironic but Beast is drawn beautifully. The artwork is good. The detailing of Beast's room, the rose jar stand and the mirror was incredible. I wish this manga was in colors. It would have looked more beautiful. Nonetheless, it was great and an enjoyable read.

An ARC of this comic book was provided by the TokyoPop via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is better than Belle’s version but it is still not as satisfying as I had expected,

The story is based on Disney’s 2017 live action movie of “Beauty and the Beast”. While the story is faithful to the movie, it doesn’t include all the scenes but covers the events that happen from Beast’s perspective. This lends the story a novelty that was missing in the other book that contains Belle’s version of events. After all, hers is the more popular narration so to see things through Beast’s eyes made a big difference. The story tries its best to help us understand Beast’s decisions. I loved Beast’s internal monologues in this book.

This book is part of a two-volume manga series which was originally released in 2017, just after the movie. This edition is the full colour version of the original B&W manga. While Belle’s book was full of bright and pastel-y colours, this one has more sombre and duller colour tones to match Beast’s “beastly” mood.

The illustrations are very nice, aptly manga in style. The manga order in this book is better than in Belle’s version but it is still not consistent throughout the story. Most of the pages follow the Western comic style of left-to-right panels, with only a few pages coming in the manga order of right-to-left. Either would have been fine, but having both isn’t good as it muddles things up.

Once again, there are jumps in the storyline, which I now realise were covered in Belle’s story. So the two books are like halves of each other but not exact semi-circular halves. Rather, they are more like two pieces with jagged edges but which fit into each other perfectly. This will create a problem if a reader chooses to go for one of the books and not the other. To get a complete experience, reading both the stories is a must. Perhaps, it would have been better to have the complete story in a single book than these two separate editions with partial narrations. (Then again, watching the movie too will provide the complete story.)

Basically, I enjoyed this graphic novel far better than Belle’s story, but it still left me wanting more.

    3.75 stars.

My thanks to TOKYOPOP and NetGalley for the DRC of “Disney Manga: Beauty and the Beast – The Beast's Tale (Full-Color Edition)”. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.

The art is as charming as in the first part, but the dialogues/insights seem even more crude and unfinished..

Imagine reading Beauty and Beast in a live animation Manga edition. The color scheme worked really well to set the mood. It took me a while to understand how to read (the instructions are the end, which I read after finishing the book. That’s the trouble with e-copies), and yet, it felt as if the dialogues didn’t follow the same pattern throughout.

I love how the servants are creepy cute. Sounds like an oxymoron, but the book had The Addams Family vibes (one of my favorite shows as a kid). Reading the Beast’s POV was interesting. His vulnerability came out well, even though the book seemed a bit rushed. Guess it’s probably because of the format.

I’m not sure how much I enjoyed the live animation art. Some of it was superb. However, in some scenes, the expressions seemed forceful. Maybe that’s how it’s done. I confess I have almost no knowledge of this art form. I requested the ARC just to enjoy the fairytale in the full-color edition.

To sum up, the Beast’s version is a good take on the original and adds depth to the storyline. I love the illustrations of the rose in the glass jar. The magic and power translate to the page perfectly.

Thank you, NetGalley and TOKYOPOP, Disney Manga, for the ARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.

I read Belle’s Tale, the companion to this story, first and it didn’t live up to my expectations, so they were much lower when I began reading the Beast’s perspective. Although I have historically focused most of my attention on Belle’s point of view (her reading habits are so relatable), being able to see things from the Beast’s was a refreshing change.

Sure, it’s still a story of an angry young man imprisoning a bookish young woman, who then falls in love with her jailer... And this manga-style graphic novel is based on the live-action adaptation that I couldn’t get into instead of the animated one that I was obsessed with as a kid. And Mrs Potts is just as creepy here as she was in Belle’s Tale.

But I quite enjoyed this one. It includes some of the Beast’s backstory and his thoughts on how his life has played out so far.

While Belle’s story was coloured in tones that matched her optimism, the Beast’s story begins as dark as his moods and gradually brightens as Belle’s impact on him grows.

The proportions are variable. When the Beast first captures Belle’s father, the Beast looks colossal. I don’t claim to understand art so this may be a way of highlighting the Beast’s power, but it looked odd, especially when compared to the next page where the proportions are more realistic.

I absolutely loved the front covers of the two tales, which joined together form a single image. It works both from a marketing perspective and a visual one. I know I’d have to buy a matching set.

The cursed (and I use this term lightly) object I most need in my life is the book that takes escapism to a whole new level.

Thank you so much to NetGalley and TOKYOPOP for the opportunity to read this graphic novel.

The Beast's Tale told (obviously) from the perspective of the French prince that was turned into a beast was so worth the read. As much as I am familiar with the story, there are aspects of the early pre-curse life that I wasn't familiar with. The loss of a mother and the cruelty of his father explains so much of the beast's anger. I also liked the pointing out of class differences in France especially when the Beast realizes he is falling in love with Belle.

    The Book Portal.

    4.75/5.00 stars.
I am going to start by saying that the graphics of this manga were exquisite. (Oh! Look at me using big words.) The overall story was not very far from the original Disney's Beauty and the Beast, the cartoon. I know. I haven't seen my most anticipated 2017 movie, yet. Notice the "yet."
Since it is based on the movie, there may be lots of spoilers.
We learn more about the characters' backgrounds. Belle's part was confusing-ish and felt cut short, in a way, while The Beast's was intriguing. Probably because we knew so little about the beast in the previous Disney's adaptation. Or the manga story makes more sense the second time and it happens to be The Beast's point of view. The overall dialogue combined with the images made the tale to flow rather nicely. Since the manga focused on Belle and The Beast, we do not see too much of Gaston and LeFou. Some plot holes are here and there because of the shift from third person - seen in the movies - to first person in the manga (e.g. the crowd from the castle).
This was a great quick read. And if you are a Beauty and the Beast, you might want to ask Mrs. Potts for some tea because this might be your cup of tea. ;)

This is my sole opinion. ^_^

I would like to say thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

    3.5 stars rounded up.

This second installment of the manga adaptation of Disney's live action film version of their animated "Beauty and the Beast" film is so much better from Beast's POV than it was from Belle's, for the most part because Disney seems to have listened to years of critiques to their interpretation of Beast's origin story, and has done their best to fix it. At least, that's how I see it, and think they've done a good job fixing the issue, because as I've always mentioned in my reviews whenever Disney's version is used as the basis for retellings, my one major problem with it is that I've never agreed that their origin story for Beast meshed with the spirit of the French fairy tale.

And, whilst it's not a perfect fix, I think it's great! It goes so well with Disney's own spin on Madame de Beaumont's version of the fairy tale, which is the one they retold, and it keeps its core theme of redemption for past mistakes, a key element of the original fairy tale. I liked their expansion of the story of the curse, what led to it, why Beast acted like he did towards the enchantress that cursed him. The expanded origin story not only humanises Beast but, pretty important to me personally, it shows that Beast was a victim himself and allowed that victimisation to warp his soul. I like how the young prince evolves internally, how you can glimpse his wounded humanity fighting to come through the beastliness, and how he wants to better himself in spite of continuously falling prey to his bad temper. He truly reforms himself! And it's heartwarming to see.

As a critique, I'd say that the manga adaptation would've probably worked better if Belle's POV and Beast's POV were inserted one after the other in a continuum instead of split into two separate volumes. Why? Because the Beast's Tale volume overlaps with scenes from the Belle's Tale volume, resulting in repetitive scenes that bloat the story. Some of the scenes we already saw from Belle's POV in the first book are repeated rather than elaborated on differently. And also, the abruptness in transitioning from one chapter to the next is still there, although it flows better by virtue of Beast's POV being both more inward-looking and more artistically panoramic/big picture in its depiction of scenes. And finally, I think Beast is a bit too obviously handsome through that animal face the curse bestowed on him, as if he's wearing make up and a lion mane wig instead of having a truly animalistic head like in the animated film, where he was both truly beastly and ugly and with an imposing ferocity, as he should be.

Anyway, I enjoyed this very much! They toned down the preachiness that was seeping in from Belle's POV, too. And I think that the live action film's additions to Beast's story combined with the animated film's visuals together would make for the perfect retelling rather than just either alone.

Thanks to TokyoPop for the ARC through NetGalley in exchange for a review.

My thanks to NetGalley and Diamond Book Distributors Tokyopop for an eARC copy of this book to read and review.

This gets one less star than the first volume, as it doesn't really add anything to the storyline, despite being from a different POV, it re-uses a LOT of the artwork from the first volume, which is kind of lazy in my opinion and the action shots are usually SO close up, you can't really tell what is happening, at least not on an eReader.

Same complaints as the first one, I'm a Beauty and the Beast snob, so the high bar of the Disney animated movie was missed by a mile. The real life Disney version was better than this book, which is saying something, as it was pretty bad too.

Skip this, just see the original Disney animated movie and read "Beauty: A Re-telling of Beauty and the Beast" by Robin McKinley. Best book version of B&TB I've read yet. I am open to suggestions for others, feel free to share!

This one is 2 stars and not recommended. I didn't completely hate it, but I really didn't like it.

I am reviewing both volumes in one.

This was my first experience with Manga, and it was really fun. I loved the style of the art work.
I had an interesting experience with the way it was told, it took me a while to get accustomed to the story in this form (I am somewhat emotionally attached to the cartoon version), but I liked it overall. Getting the Beast's side of the story in Vol. II was an awesome follow-up, the two volumes compliment each other well. I really enjoyed them.

I AM SUCKER FOR BEAUTY AND THE BEAST'S STORY!

This manga was beautiful - it follows the story as old as time from 2017 movie from Beast's perspective.

I love this story. Here I loved, that at first the colours were dark to emphasize Beast's loneliness and then they're more bright.

Güzel ve Çirkin manga serisinin ikinci kitabını ilk kitabından daha çok sevdim. Bence Çirkin’in Hikayesi daha ilgi çekici
ve güzel başladı. Anlatım sırasında konu atlamaları daha azdı. Keşke bu kitap da uzun olsaydı. Hızlıca bittiği için çok üzüldüm. Dört kitaplık manga serisi olsa kesin okurdum. Çizimlere yine bayıldım. Hikayenin sonunda hayat hakkında ders niteliğinde sözler vardı. Hoş bir detay. Okumanızı tavsiye ederim. Disney mangalarına şans verebilirsiniz. 🤍

Mediocre and highly problematic. My qualms with this manga are twofold: I take issue with the Beauty and the Beast fairytale itself, and I take issue with this manga specifically.

The concept of Beauty and the Beast is alright but the Stockholm Syndrome aspects of it are icky. Don’t romanticise kidnapping. Don’t romanticise holding people hostage. People die from this sort of stuff. And the idea that Belle, a strong-minded and level-headed woman would be so weak and deluded as to fall for her oppressor is laughable. It goes against the core of her character’s personality and is highly unrealistic. I get that as a fairy tale this isn’t meant to be realistic, but it’s so illogical that it’s hard to reconcile with.

To it’s credit, this manga gave the Beast more backstory than I’ve ever seen for his character before. Sadly, it was still lacking the basics such as giving him an actual name. And the backstory didn’t make him more likeable or properly explain his major shift in personality. The backstory did try to humanise him more but it didn’t go far enough. It restricted itself to flashbacks and inner monologues, but it never added anything to the core Beauty and the Beast story which could’ve elevated it, like having the father return and interact with the Beast.

The art actually was quite good and the colouring was nice too. The pacing was rushed at all times which is surprising for a manga of 170 pages. That’s time enough to tell a well-paced story, especially considering this is supposed to only be one side of the story. Perhaps the fact that we only saw the Beast’s perspective made the story feel even more threadbare. Possibly the companion manga Beauty’s story would make this one more rounded, so this is not a manga to read in isolation.

  • Toni FGMAMTC

This story shows parts about the Beast/Prince that I didn't know before (issues with his parents and such). The reader is able to know what he's thinking in different situations. Getting inside his head gives him so much more personality than in all of the B&TB tales I've seen before. I liked witnessing his interactions with the enchanted help. The action sequences really caught my attention, and I loved the cute little chapter break drawings. I've been wanting to watch the new movie, and knowing this manga comics are based upon it makes more excited to see it.

    description

This manga followed the live-action movie of a few years ago very closely. But perhaps the relationship and plot progression was a bit abrupt and could prove confusing for people not already familiar with the story. However, it was enjoyable for me to get a glimpse inside the Beast's head and a first row seat to his inner monologue filled with defeatism and angst.

As a 90's kid the original animated movie and it's drawing style holds a special place in my heart, but I still very much enjoyed this new re-imagining and redesign with more anime-inspired illustrations.

The coloring chosen for this manga and the transition from darker and in colder tones (blues, greens and grays) to brighter, happier colors, really managed to depict the loneliness and sadness of the Beast and his change of heart as he fell in love with Belle.

All in all, I think this would appeal to all Disney lovers be them young or old.

Disney Manga: Beauty and the Beast - The Beast's Tale. You know when you think something jntially about a book, and then it turns out to be nothing like you expected? Those were my thoughts when reading this book.

The story is cute, short and sweet, fabulously illustrated, but frustrating. Don't get me wrong, I truly enjoyed this volume, however I thought (wrongly) that I would get to see new scenes beyond the movie, or at least some form of deviation. But this is just the movie told from the Beast's POV, which was a little disappointing.

If your a Disney, die-hard fan, or of you enjoy incredibly illustrated graphic novels, then I would highly recommend this book. However, for me it was beautiful, but easily forgettable

I love the original story and was really excited to discover it again in manga format.
It’s a very quick read and follows the most recent movie quite well. There’s nothing new or original added to the story as far as I know.

For some reason, I preferred this version more than Belle’s story.
Also for the drawings, I found them better in this one!

I actually thought this was better than
Belle's Tale, in terms of both the flow and artwork. I loved having the Beast's POV and insight into his childhood, especially since this is a mostly untold perspective.

The use of a darker colour palette in contrast to Belle's more vibrant tones was also a clever touch. While both books might have the same scenes, Belle's Tale uses subtly lighter shades. Meanwhile, The Beast' Tale retains the same dark colours until towards the end.

    An enjoyable and creative adaptation!

Thank you to Netgalley, Tokyopop and Disney Manga for an ARC of this book.

What a beautifully vibrant graphic novel! This full-color version has now become a must-buy for me.

The story from Beast's side was executed much better than Belle's tale, in my opinion. It didn't feel as disjointed, the scenes flowed through the story nicely. POV changes are always refreshing and while this does follow the live-action film, I found Beast's side more intriguing.

I definitely recommend checking out both Belle's and Beast's stories!

-ARC kindly offered by NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review-

I was quietly watching emails when suddenly I get the usual NetGalley newsletter with the manga/comics news. Sometimes I avoided watching to not fall into temptation but sometimes I get it and here I am! Two manga volumes of Disney's film "The Beauty and the Beast", what do I do? Do not I ask them? Of course not. And time to connect and download them, I'm reading in PC.
The story is identical to that of the film, the designer has faithfully reproduced it, but has also added backgrounds depending on the subject matter. Obviously for the volume dedicated to Belle has been deepened a little bit more her character and we notice sprays of her childhood and her deeper thoughts. For Adam/The Beast was the same but I found his point of view more interesting perhaps because he does not go to talk much about him in the other transpositions and why he behaves so coldly. Yet I found sweet him thoughts for Belle changing page after page and him heart melting with the girl's presence.
The fact that I did not give a full score is because as far as the designs I have liked, what Gaston did was not convincing at all. He looks like a distant relative of Zenigata (Lupin III) with him hair at Elvis Presley and that's all to say. Then, I do not know, there is a lack of insight into Belle that would not have been wrong.

Beast’s Tale comes after Belle’s Tale, which I already reviewed
here. In this second volume we have the Beast’s point of view of Beauty and the Beast, which was, without a doubt, way more interesting than the first volume. As I already wrote in my Belle’s Tale’s review, Beauty and the Beast is not my favourite Disney fairy tale, but I really like it and it’s in my TOP favourites, hence my curiosity for these mangas (and also the movie, which I haven't had the opportunity to watch yet).

As I already said, in this volume we have the Beast’s point of view; we see the same events from the first volume through this character’s eyes, but also what happened before. I think this volume is way more interesting than the first volume, since I connected more easily with the Beast than I ever felt wit Belle – which is a shame for me.

It was an excellent reading, and it complemented in a really good way (and it’s actually better) the first volume. I didn’t write about the art, because it’s faithful to its style from the previous volume. Beast’s Tale was a good reading, way better than the first volume, and I really recommend it for those who like Beauty and the Beast.

This manga is a precise adaptation (cutting the musical part) of the new Disney's live-action film and it is told in two volumes.
The first volume follows the story by Belle’s perspective and the 2nd volume focuses on Beast’s point of view.
This manga is only good for the people who have seen this film already because it does have some untraditional story lines.
Unfortunately, I was disappointed with those volumes. I wish there were just one book/volume, this way it wouldn't felt so abrupt and jumpy.
My other issue was the artistic style, it also felt a bit abrupt, it is like some pages were done with care and were detailed and others felt empty and done by the immature artist.
Please, go see the movie first, plus, it is actually very good. :)

Beauty and the Beast is a wonderful fairytale and I love watching both the animated and live-action version. Reading this tale in manga form was great! The illustrations are beautiful and the overall feel of the story remains, even when the pictures aren't moving ;)
I love how they split Belle's and the Beast's story for this manga, it brings a new dimension to the story even though I already know it so well.
The Beast's story is darker than Belle's and I really like how they made that distinction in the books.
