Mystic Water, an enchanted Southern town where anything can happen, is sprinkling its magic on the unsuspecting assistant librarian, Emma Chase, who feels lost in a life of disappointment. Plagued with an everyday existence of past tragedies and regrets, Emma has relinquished her future to her job of sorting books in the library.

Her only friend, as it seems, is head librarian, Mordecai Wallach, the sturdy father-figure who tries to right her floundering ship. One night after the library has closed, Emma hears voices coming from the archives section. She finds peculiar visitors who seem all too familiar, and she unexpectedly entangles herself in the long-held secrets of the library’s magic. When Emma must take control of the library in Morty’s absence, she realizes he hasn’t been entirely honest with her.

While trying to discover the truth, she comes face-to-face with James Grey, a handsome military man with a history of his own and an irresistible charm. While working to keep the library’s magic from being discovered by the town, Emma struggles not to fall in love with James—the only one who can change the course of her life but whose time is running out. Just how far will the magic take her?

The Legend of James Grey Reviews

I just love Mystic Water, the small mystical town that a few of Jennifer Moorman's books are set in, including this one. It feels like visiting an old friend when you pick up one of her books and land back here.

The story is about Emma, a librarian's assistant to Morty, her lovely boss who looks after her like a Dad would. Emma has kind of lost her way a bit as her brother died about a year ago and her boyfriend walked out on her. Morty is trying to get her to go back to college, as she came home about a year and a half ago to look after her brother, but Emma is resisting as she's happy where she is just floating through life.

Emma herself is quite mystical without really knowing it, words float out of people and objects when she is around them that she can see and feel.

There is an archive in the basement of the library and one evening, after forgetting her purse, she ends back at the library in the evening and hears voices. She thought it may be Morty so goes downstairs to see him and stumbles across some unusual characters, falls, hits her head and when she wakes up Morty is there but says he doesn't know what she's talking about when she mentions them. Then the next day two books returned to the library are just like the characters she saw last night and Emma starts wondering if it was a dream or a vision she had.

Then Morty is slightly ill one day and when Emma can't get hold of him by phone she rushes back to the library and finds James Grey, the deceased main character in her favourite biography and a local war hero born in 1919 in Mystic Water, trying to figure out how to use a phone to ring for help! Morty is rushed to hospital as he has had a heart attack and Emma is left to figure out what on earth is going on in the library!

She doesn't believe it at first, but after talking to James and trying out the mystical powers herself - and unfortunately causing mayhem with unleashing Captain Hook - she believes in the magic and helps protect the secret for Morty, whilst having a lovely gentle, romantic time with James.

This was a lovely, really feel-good book with a mystical, magic air about it, as are all the Mystic Water books. I love Jennifer Moorman's style of writing. I hope these books continue as I really look forward to visiting Mystic Water again.

I finished this lovely one by Jennifer Moorman last night. It was just the sweet escape into magical realism I needed during this pandemic and quarantine. I picked this one up when Jennifer graciously put her books on sale for those of us cooped up and needing new books.
This one follows Emma. Just out of a bad relationship and working as a librarian in Mystic Waters, she finds herself wondering if her favorite book characters could come to life. Strange things happen at the library. But is she just seeing things? Then a handsome soldier walks into her life.
This one had a little bit edgier backstory for Emma than I have seen in other works by Moorman (and I liked that). I also liked how the ending was not the fairytale you might be expecting.
I am glad I picked this one up. And it just goes to show that I always enjoy a trip to Mystic Waters.

I loved this book as I have all other books set in the town of Mystic Waters. Who hasn't wished for a book boyfriend to come to life? I laughed, I cried...the characters made me feel and that is what I love about a good book. My only complaint (but not enough to drop it a star) is that the magic that brings James around every year couldn't find a way to keep him alive forever - or a natural life span ;)

I was so excited to get started on this.

I mean this is one of every readers dream. Having fictional characters come to life?! Hell yeah!

But I’m sad to say this one did not do it for me.

It had great potential and a great plot but I just could not get through Emma. She is just not the type of female lead I like. I felt like I was reading about a teenager wanting to be an adult.

I absolutely adored this book! A dear friend has been suggesting that I read Jennifer Moorman's books for a couple of years now. A couple of days ago I ran across this book and devoured the whole thing overnight. I love the light and whimsical feel of Mystic Water. More than anything, I love books about books! I will definitely read the rest of her books.

This book started a little slow for me but once I got into it I loved the concept and it was a fun read. I also enjoyed the deep dive into the importance of living in the moment and being thankful for the wonderful experiences in life. This book would make a delightful Hallmark movie!
