Al's Goose Is Cooked!

Forced into early retirement, Al Richardson knows what his wife will say when she hears the terrible news. Millie will insist that they open their B&B early. Where will that leave him? Carrying luggage and waiting tables? No way! He needs time to come up with another plan. With the help of an unlikely accomplice, Al spends his days scanning want ads and frequenting out-of-town coffee shops in an effort to hide his secret from all of Goose Creek—including his wife.

Millie is too busy to notice Al's odd behavior. Between planning a huge Christmas party and holding tight to the reins of newcomer Lulu Thacker—whose tacky decorating schemes are sure to infuriate Main Street business owners—she has no time for anything else.

One thing is certain: In Goose Creek, no secret stays hidden for long. The most holy of holidays is swiftly approaching. Is Al in for a Merry Christmas or a Marriage Crisis?

Well, it’s no secret that I have been thoroughly enjoying the Goose Creek series. It’s full of unique personalities – and on that score, Franklin and Lulu Thacker definitely rate a special mention – and has had me tittering away in my little corner of the world as I follow the exploits of these everyday folk trying to get on with their day-to-day life in small-town Kentucky. This Christmas novella is no different.

As Goose Creek’s Main Street Manager, Lulu Thacker is in charge of decorating Main Street for Christmas, but anyone who has read other books in this series will know Lulu Thacker never does anything by halves; if anything, she does things by doubles! Even so, no one is quite prepared for the Christmas spectacle Lulu creates...

The ever-diplomatic Millie has her hands full trying to keep the peace between Lulu – still a relative newcomer to town – and the rest of Goose Creek’s residents, without getting her own friends off-side. She’s also trying to find her own Christmas spirit knowing that her daughter and son-in-law, along with the two-month-old granddaughter she hasn’t met yet, won’t be able to come home from Italy, where they are currently stationed, for Christmas.

Al suffers a blow to his pride when he is told he’s no longer qualified enough for his own job. Surely he can keep the truth from Millie long enough to find himself another job. And suggesting Millie hosts a Christmas party at their home will serve double duty in distracting her from their daughter’s absence and his own situation. But Lulu’s enthusiasm might get in the way of that, too...

The Goose Creek residents have definitely done it again. And if there’s one thing I appreciate about this series, it’s that each of the characters have their redeeming qualities, no matter their faults. Yes, even Lulu Thacker! And as much as this series has set me to tittering, I needed to get me a tissue for the ending. But they were happy tears folks!

Oh, and in keeping with the quirky tradition of some of Goose Creek’s residents, you can even get yourself a recipe for Broccoli Corn Bread! Um, yum...?

This novella is full of humor and often reminds me of National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation with the wacky happenings. First Al has been forced to take an early retirement, but he's hiding it from his wife, Millie. Millie is trying to help her friend Lulu decorate the business district for their small town of Goose Creek, but rather than sticking with the traditional, Lulu wants to go all out crazy. Another of her friends Freida wants nothing to change. Throw in a conspiracy to keep Al's forced retirement from Millie, Lulu going online and buying every neon grass ornament she can find as well as blow up snow globes, and Freida constantly blowing her cork, hilarity reigns from start to finish. This one will definitely tickle your funny bone but the ending holds the sweetness of forgiveness and Christmas.

This was a lot of book in a small number of pages. I have not read any of the previous books but I don't feel that I missed out on anything major. Some of the characters appear to have been featured in past books. I look forward to reading them.

It was a interesting Christmas read. Not quite the humor that the series has had and I could of done without the details of Alice's husband. I could of read a whole book about LuLu and Franklin; they were my favorites.

This is book four of the "Tales from the Goose Creek B&B" series. I haven't read any of the other books in this series, so it seems to be sufficiently independent of the other books. This is also a novella although I did't see any indication of that in the description. However I was able to read it through twice in just a few hours, so it is short.

This is a great light read filled with zany, quirky characters, a small town feel, and the ability to help you set the mood for the season.

Al and Millie Richardson are in their twilight years, have bought themselves a Bed and Breakfast and just recently remodeled it. They are anticipating their years of retirement when Al is unexpectedly released from his work as computer specialist. His pride was hurt more than anything else, since he was already prepared to retire in another year, so he decides to delay telling his wife for awhile so as not to upset her over the upcoming holidays. Well, that was his excuse anyway.

In the meantime, Mille has her hands full with one of her neighbors who takes on the task of decorating the downtown business district of Goose Creek. The problem is that her tastes clash with those of the community, especially the downtown businesses. She is so distracted with this dilemma that she doesn't notice that her husband suddenly has more time on his hands than he used to.

There are so many amusing moments in this short tale. I enjoyed taking the time to get to know this local community. If you are in the need for momentary breaks during the Christmas season, this is the book for you. It is a pleasant and sweet diversion.

A Goose Creek Christmas (Tales from the Goose Creek B&B Book 4) by Virginia Smith
First time reading this series. Story about Albert and Millie and she is gearing up to open the B&B after the holidays.
The town busybody is busy obtaining Christmas decorations for the whole town and displays them all in her yard.
Albert has lost his job but it's more a retirement but he won't tell Millie.
So many others involved in what's going on this season. As this is the first in the series for me I felt like I was left in the dark, not knowing the normal crowd. Too much drama for me.
Liked hearing of the other careers in the town and businesses.

    November-December/Kentucky

This was the first book in this series that I had read. I may have enjoyed it more if I had started at the beginning of the series instead of the end. This is about Christmas decorations, a party, and a lie. I enjoyed reading about the town's obsession with Christmas decorations and what was acceptable. I found that funny. I didn't enjoy the forced retirement part of the story. I thought that part should have gone differently.

A joy to read. As another reviewer stated: "The only problem I have with this series is I read them too quickly! I try to pace myself but always end up finishing way too soon." Sorry to see the end of this series.

My calendar says it's April and springtime but Mother Nature is apparently menopausal and cranked up the air conditioning! I said all of that to say the weather made it the perfect time to brew a pot of coffee and sit down with a novella set during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday. I thoroughly enjoyed both as I became an admirer of Millie, prayed for Al, and shook my head at Lulu. I started and finished the book about half the pot of coffee at the same time.

The adventures continue in Goose Creek as Al faces unexpected changes, and Lulu tries to "spruce up" the town's Christmas decorations, much to the town's dismay! It's a fun and charming small town Christmas story with lots of heart. Narrator, Becky Doughty, sets a smooth pace, consistently captures each personality, and delivers a lively narrative.

This audio was a gift from the narrator. A review was not requested nor required.

This book is as good as the others in the 'series'.
It was funny, heart-warming and true-to-life regarding life in a small town - dealing with neighbors (those you like and those you didn't) - helping one another when needed.
Millie and Albert, the 2 main characters, love and support each other throughout the book.

    Cozy Read

This was such a sweet cozy read for the holidays! I have not read any others in the series, but that is perfectly okay because you still get a full story and the characters are developed well enough you can read it as a stand alone. Although it is a short book, it is fun, sweet, and heart warming just what you want this time of year!

  • Amanda

What a fun and delightful story! I came across this as a freebie and thoroughly enjoyed the characters. Al and Millie are delightful. I love that they're older and married for almost 40 years and still in love with each other in spite of the ups and downs of life together. I can't wait to read the other books in the series.

  • Elaine

It seems that when our hero loses his job, his only hope is that his wife doesn't find out! He makes believe he is still working, but it's difficult. Meanwhile, his wife is having problems with her friend, Lulu, who wants to decorate the town's shops as well as her own home., with with eccentric decorations that most residents are against.
A quick Christmas read with a nice ending.

    Great Enjoyable and Relaxing Series

I’ve read all of the Goose Creek books and have just enjoyed rereading this one. I would like more Goose Creek/Millie and Al stories please. They are descriptive and fun and I like to picture myself running the B and B and being a wonderful hostess and cook and party planner and decorator!

  • Barbara

If you're looking for a quick, delightful read, then this book is for you. I found it kind of sad that Al didn't trust his wife with the news of his early retirement. But real life happens that way, too. The ending is happy so that makes it a good holiday read.

Millie and Al are the best.

A lovely Christmas story filled with angst, kooky neighbors, and love. When Al is retired early by his company due to his age he decided not to tell Millie right away. That's when all the trouble starts.

  • Tonya

A sweet story that seems to round out the Goose Creek series. Such a shame. A feel good series with a cast of characters that are fun to read about. Makes me look forward to Christmas. It’s a shame about Lulu’s special decorations.

  • Becky

A story of family, friends and community in Goose Creek. All have very strong, quirky personalities. I think I would have enjoyed this more if I would have read the others prior in the series. I felt very lost and out of sync with the people. A clean, enjoyable, fast read

    Light and Fun!

I chose this rating because of the feel good theme , the ease of reading and the happy ending. The characters are believable and I just needed the Christmas story in a small town America.
