Maisie Caldwell knows she won’t live to see her seventeenth birthday. Her mother and sister are locked in a war over the world, and Maisie is stuck between them. She must decide if she will join her sister Jesse’s cause and save the world, even if that means betraying her mother.
Jesse needs to find her father’s body and finish him before he can resurrect. If she succeeds she will save millions, if not billions, of lives. But first, Jesse must defeat the woman protecting him. Maisie’s decision will make or break all they’ve worked so hard to protect.
Dying Breath is the sixth book in the Dying for a Living series. You do not have to read the books in order to enjoy them, but it is recommended.

If you thought book 5 was intense…
The action in Dying Breath, book 6 in Kory M. Shrum’s Dying for a Living series, is off the charts! The end of the world is quickly approaching, and Jesse Sullivan is in the thick of it, determined to become the apex that will either protect or destroy all of humanity.
Book 6 picks up right where book 5 left off, with a car chase through the Arizona dessert. There are only four partis left, and while Jesse is all too ready for two of them to meet more permanent ends, there’s one in particular that she can’t bear the thought of losing: Maisie, Jesse’s half-sister who’s been snatched up by her homicidal mother—and fellow partis—Georgia. A morbid family reunion in a tiny desert town kicks off this spiral toward an apocalypse that Jesse is only just beginning to understand her role in. Some hard decisions have to be made, and the final choice lies in Jesse’s uncertain hands.
This book took place over the span of one very thrilling day. Every page was packed with action and emotion. The POV was split between Jesse and Maisie, and I really enjoyed the contrast of personalities between the two sisters. I’m so looking forward to the final book next year! Jesse’s story has been building beautifully through the past six books, and I can’t wait to see how it all ends. -
This review is for the Audible version of the book.
Horrible, horrible reading that I DO NOT recommend.
I don't know whether it was the American accent that threw me off when I had already imagined the character's voices in my head or it was just a REALLY bad reading of the book. All I know is that it was like fingernails down the blackboard of my soul. UGH!! Maisie came across as the whiniest bitch of a teenager and the complete monotone of the Angels ...... dare I say more?
If I had of listened to this series from the beginning I can guarantee I would have got no further than the first book and would have missed out on an awesome series. So I've returned the Audible version for the seventh and last book and downloaded the ebook instead. -
Another excellent book in this series. I loved Jesse and Maisie as the main characters (you can't go wrong with Jesse;) although I did kind of missed the rest of the gang. Fun action-packed story.
Great read! -
Soooo, this book dragged. I can't even give it a 2/5 stars rating, because I was so bored. Having a whole book dedicated to the final battle may not be the smartest thing. It felt like I was just reading the same thing over and over again.
So what about the last book in the series? If I think the series is being dragged by this point, I'm afraid what I'll think of the last book. Gonna give it a go, though, as I already own it, but first a pause from the series and hopefully finding an audiobook that engages me as much as most of this series have managed.
I mean, I finished all but the 1st book within 30 hours of starting them. Even the 1st, that was messy, I finished within 48 hours. What does it say that I used 3 days on the shortest book in the series, and even now had to FORCE myself to finish it?
ok, I'm done rambling now. -
Once again Kory Shrum outdid herself.
I don't want to give too much away, but we start where we left off in the last book with Jesse trying to track down her sister and save her from her evil parents. Oh and not only does she have to save Maisie, she has to kill Caldwell and save the entire world. But all she really wants to do is go back to her girlfriend, curl up with her pug Winston and forget about everything.
This time the story is told from Jesse's and Maisie's point of view. I enjoyed being able to get inside Maisie's head, to understand how she feels about everything that is going on. She is so torn between going with her sister, or staying with her parents, even though she knows her parents are abusive and completely mad. She loves them but doesn't understand why since they continue to treat her like dirt and are physically abusive.
She just wants to be a normal teenager. Instead, she is scared she will die before she gets a chance to grow up, finish high school and have a boyfriend. Jesse is determined to give her all of that, but first, they have to kill Caldwell before he destroys the whole world.
As usual, the action was non-stop and Jesse is as funny as ever, even when she's stressed to the max. The snark is the only way she knows how to deal with everything.
This story continues to suck me in and I can't recommend it enough. If you haven't read it yet. Start with book one, Dying for a Living, which is free on Amazon right now! -
The pentultimate installment of the Dying for a Living series.
Enjoy! :)

Alert: LGBT themes
Warning: Cliffhanger (Status: shoulda known it would end there)
Jesse needs to find her father and end this before he can ressurect again. Maisie has been taken back by her mother, even though she wants to be with Jesse. Maisie is scared and not very brave at all and she wants to go back to her big sister who is big and strong and can protect her.
Despite the lower rating, I actually enjoyed reading Dying Breath more than I enjoyed reading Worth Dying For. It just feels like the closer we get to the end of the story, the more things unravel.
The power in this series is rising exponentially. We've known that was going to happen since book four, Dying Light. It is kind of fun, kind of dangerous, kind of expected. The stakes are getting higher, too. We're down to four of twelve.
Maisie is a good character. I love her character arc. I love how she is a scared girl of only 16. She has doubts, she doesn't think her angel chose right when she chose her. She is scared out of her mind. She just wants to live, and live a normal life. She wants to fall in love, not run around the Arizona desert with her crazy mom who is trying to stitch her father's head back on so he can revive.
Jesse is just really chasing after Maisie and Georgia most of the book. The book felt a bit like it was extended longer than the story meant to be extend to get a full book out of it, because of this. While reading I didn't exactly notice it, but looking back not a lot happened.
This family is so completely dysfunctional, they don't even know what functional means, though. Everyone in this family wants to kill someone else in the family, sometimes multiple someones. They don't bicker, they just go straight to killing. This family is absolutely crazy. Though, with a head like Caldwell, can you really expect anything different?
This was a fun, action packed book. The power and the stakes are raised, all that is left is the end.

Great! Review to come!

I jumped into this series at book 6. I am definitely going to be getting the rest of this series! Amazing 5 stars! This is the first book I have read/listened to by this author and I am so hooked! I really enjoyed listening to this story with all the characters and the emotions. The narrator did a fantastic job. I cannot pick a favorite character, they each had their own amazing parts even the villains in this story.

As with every book in the series I (continue to) love the characters and the way the author uses multiple points of view by giving key characters' perspectives in the narrative.
Also, as with every book in the series I couldn't put the book down as I was so truly drawn into the world they occupy that I needed to know what happened next. (This isn't always the case for me - but with the Jesse Sullivan series I need to clear my calendar before I snuggle up and read - I'm likely to read everywhere I go and every chance I get with Ms. Shrum's books.)
That said - this book felt...padded. It felt as if it was originally meant to be the final book in the series, but then the author changed course and added more "inner talk" for each character. On the one hand, I didn't mind this because I love the characters so much. On the other, I felt that it took away from from the momentum because this book seemed like it was the climax of the series.
Also, I expected growth in the main character (Jesse). At times she remains her sarcastic, snarky self when I think she'd more genuinely show some gravitas or fear. Perhaps she's using her snark as a defense mechanism - but to me it stood out as untimely.
None of this makes me love the series or the book any less. (Not every book I read gets a 5 star review or even the time to review it!) I recommend this series wholeheartedly to all my friends.
I am eagerly looking forward to the 7th and final book in the series along with everyone else who has these characters dwelling in their mind long after they've finished the book. -
Dying Breath - a review by Rosemary Kenny
Jesse Sullivan's the young heroine who alone can save the world from the curse of her evil father Caldwell. To do so she must rescue her young half-sister Maisie and defeat her stepmother Georgia who is consumed by her husband's dark power and will do anything (especially kill Jesse) to prevent her daughter's inherent powers from thwarting the deadly couple's fatal mission!
Will Jesse be in time to do the right thing, or will her seemingly dead father rise again to defeat her?
Grab your copy today and find out for yourself - but be prepared not to sleep in the dark for a very long time if you read it alone! -
Remember when I wondered back in Book 2 or something how they were going to fill a seven book series? They did good. This is the sisters' book, Maisie and Jesse. And M's PoV gives this book its own tone, with that "why can't I have a normal high school life" angst to gently flavor the "why can't I have a normal adult happily ever after". This whole book is the showdown in Cochise, Sand and Fire. Ally spends a lot of time on Jesse's shoulder to remind her not to be a monster and not to kill bystanders, while Gabriel is the angel on her other shoulder with his own concerns.

I hated the ending, but......
But not because it was bad. It isn't; it's a great ending - but it's heartbreaking. This is surely not a "happy ever after" kind of story. If I'd known that I'd've never started it, or even the beginning of the series at all.
I hate it. But I have to be honest - not all books are comedies, not all endings are happy, and this book was amazingly well written. If you want to read a book where you really care about the characters as if they were real, then this is one you should consider.
Just don't expect to walk away unscarred -
Jesse continues to make choices that impact the world, but Shrum continues to make her complex enough that sometimes Jesse’s choices come as a surprise. Additionally, we got to see the perspective of Maisie in this book. She quickly became one of my favorite characters and I’m glad we got some night into what the younger girl’s life was like and into how she thinks and feels.
-
As with the other books in this series I could not put this book down! Kory Shrum is a very talented writer. She continues to pull you into Jesse's story, letting it come alive within your mind. Very well done and I highly recommend this series.

somebody bring this series to Poland please
-
spannend alleen mist iets aan het eind
-
Slightly disappointed, hence 4 Stars and not 5 Stars this time, but my hopes are very high for the final instalment!
-
Love being able to read seven books back to back.
-
Can't wait for the next book
-
Very action-packed, but you will be lost if you have not read this series in order.
-
Once again, this is non-stop action. I can't believe what's happened in this book and can't wait for the next one.
-
She's done it yet again. I read this in a day and the action scenes are so vivid that I was out of breath just reading them.
My only disappointment was the end. Surely that was the end and I don't see how there is still another book to come but I have faith in Kory to deliver something amazing that I will not be expecting. -
My favorite sci-fi series
Kory Shrum's 6th installment in the Jesse Sullivan " Dying for a Living " series does not disappoint. I am not a huge sci-fi guy, but I was introduced to this series a couple of years ago through an Amazon Kindle Deal and became intrigued by the Death Replacement Agent concept and unrealistic battle to save the world storyline. I am a huge fan of the series.
I most appreciate the author's character development, sarcasm and use of multiple narrators to provide different perspectives and keep the action moving. I surmise there is a lot of the author's own wit, emotions and life poured into the pages.
As a series, each book does not stand on its own well. Book 6 picks up where 5 leaves off and then sets up for the final installment due in 2017. It is hard for me to recommend a particular book without suggesting going back and reading the entire collection. I would recommend doing just that.
Eagerly anticipating " Dying Day" - Book 7 in 2017 -
Book 6 of the Dying for a living series kicks off with a bang. The opening scenes are action packed as it picks up where book 5 left off with Jesse chasing after Maisie, her mother Georgia, and the body of her father Caldwell. She must rescue Maisie, stop Caldwell from coming back to life, absorb his powers and go through Georgia in order to accomplish these. The pace of this novel starts off intense and doesn't slow down much throughout.

I read this as part of the Dying for a Living Box Set 4-7 series
The first chapter is very exciting. Maisie is telling this part we get a view of the conflict she has with her mother, father, and Jesse. There’s a lot of action in this book.
