Sex Rules!: Astonishing Gender and Sex Roles from Around the World Reviews

  • Petra time heals but a week isnt quite long enough

This is the Readers' Digest version of anthropology among the natives. There are a lot of interesting sexual practices involved in the book, but they are written in a snide, often disrespectful way, all meaning stripped out of them. (It's a long review so I've just put headings in bold, and the text in spoilers so you can check them if you want - or not). As an example.

"When a Biwat child is born, the parents debate its future. Are they pondering school options and what career to encourage? Nah. They’re deciding whether to throw it into the river.

But only the boys are at risk. Girls are much too valuable. Because the only way a Biwat man can get a wife is by trading a sister for her.

Ah, the lucky family with lots of girls! All the sons will have a sister to trade for a wife…unless of course the oldest brother is a greedy SOB and trades all of his sisters for wives for himself. Poor younger brothers—they may end up without a legal wife.
Or the out-and-out disrespectful and insulting,
Four letter words even Grandma wouldn’t mind…

Among some aboriginal societies in Australia, the word for man is “penis,” woman is “vagina,” and children are “semen.” So relax when your neighbor calls out cheerily, “Here comes a penis, a vagina, and some semen.” She just means a family is strolling down the road.
The book has blank pages after each section, then a whole page with the section title, then another blank page.. It is a very lean, and badly-written, book.

My father used to read Readers' Digest, and at the bottom of a lot of pages was a small anecdote or fact. That's what the book feels like, a collection of filler jokes, quotes and stories.

It could have been such an interesting book. We all do exactly the same things sexually as a base so it is the culture, the variations and the kinks that makes different peoples interesting.

The author's agenda is to quote really restrictive (and archaic) US State laws to do with sex and then discuss briefly and facilely, all the other much more liberal nations of the world. It's beginning to look like a dnf. I thought the book might offer me something to think on, but this is the sort of book you can put in the bathroom for guests to amuse themselves with.

Rant on 'purity' and virginity What has purity has to do with virginity? I have never understood. I like pure water. I like unadulterated food. I like a red that is a pure carmine pigment. But virginity, that's just not having had sex yet! When I had sex for the first time, afterwards I thought, "is that all, is that what it was all about?" . I didn't feel impure or sullied or used goods. I felt a bit disappointed really. All that build up and then all I get is pine needles stuck to my ass.

The expectation of tantric sex In Miami I met a MU philosophy professor, a Haitian guy I think as his name was French and he danced like a West Indian. He gave private life lessons and lectured in tantric sex. So we are getting it on and I'm looking forward to a long, slowwww night and I say, "What about tantric sex?" and he replies, "Fuck that, that's for the office." And there was no more philosophy or talk of any kind that night.

Not quite the academic work I was expecting, but a quick entertaining read, with a very broad range of diverse practices in communities across the world discussed. A little wanting in depth, mixed level sources, and in-text citations, but an interesting collection of snapshots of sexual, gender, marriage, and beauty practices/worldviews across the planet, nonetheless.

Sex, gender, and sexuality aren't as straightforward as you'd expect

This was a good source of information to show how concepts around sex and gender are completely social constructs. It gives anyone who doesn't conform to norms access to cultures where they are the norm and permission to love themselves in a society that often rejects them.

Really enjoyable and funny quick read. Not a scholarly researched and in depth described book. Didn't need to be, but worth pointing out. The author provides a 2-3 paragraph summary of different sexual practices around the world (typically in "less civilized" societies). Really interesting inspiring and worth reading
