Lovingly: Poems for All Seasons Reviews
-
I first picked this book of poems up when I was about 6 at my Nana's house, since then I have loved Helen Steiner Rice. My Nana was an extreamly spiritual woman and in my copy of this book, which once belonged to her, has her personal thoughts and scriptures written inside so it is that much more special to me. My Nana, Grams and my Mother are the three most amazing people in my life and this book of poems reminds me of them.

Helen Steiner Rice was an American writer who was born in May, 1900, in Ohio. Her writings have been a comfort and inspiration to millions of people throughout the world. She is frequently referred to as the “poet laureate of inspirational verse.” She has published over 150 books and collections of poems, as well as greeting cards and annotations to inspirational calendars. She died in April, 1981, just one month short of her 81st birthday, in her hometown of Lorain, OH.
Rice said of Lovingly, “it’s a collection of poems for all seasons of the year, the New Year, Easter, Memorial Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.” The book is beautifully illustrated with many four-color water color illustrations, and published by Guideposts.
A WORD FROM THE AUTHOR
Selected poems for the New Year,
for Easter and Thanksgiving
and some special Christmas classics
to give Hope and Joy to living.
And poems with loving tributes
or an accolade of praise
for occasions that we celebrate
because they’re Special Days.
So in this book are loving thoughts
expressed in Valentines
and Memorial Day is recognized
with patriotic lines.
And Mother’s Day and Father’s Day
are celebrated yearly
with loving little verses
to say that they’re loved dearly.
And then as a reminder
that each and every day
is a day to glorify the Lord
and to follow in His way.
There is a small collection
of “Thoughts for Daily Living”
to show us that life’s happiness
is not in getting but in giving.
And if I’ve helped in any way
to inspire you and cheer you
or if these little lines of mine
in any way endear you
or draw you any closer
to God and one another
or helped you recognize the fact
that every man’s a “brother.”
Then I’ll be very grateful
that God looked down on me
and helped me write this little book
and to sign it Lovingly.
HELEN STEINER RICE -
A little too christian for my taste

Might be too tired to really like this

I'm sure if you like poems or are into christianty, you will probably score this much higher than me. I'm not so into poetry and very religious. However, my family is, my grandmother bought this book for my great-grandmother (her mother-in-law) in 1976 for her birthday and it has been passed down to my mother. I recently found it with child scribbles in (which may have been mine) and decided to read it since it was a heritage thing and only 96 pages, so I read a few poems a day and read it over a month. I enjoyed knowing I was reading something both my grandmother and great-grandmother enjoyed in the past.

Beautiful poetry, some of them should be posted now as they are fitting for any time and date.
