The more she learns, the more she wonders if some things are better left not knowing. This was a thoroughly captivating read with some genuinely chilling moments. Disturbing and a bit twisted, as well. It kept surprising me throughout.

Body Double: The title of Tess Gerritsen’s fourth Rizzoli & Isles thriller is what it implies. Dr. Maura Isles returns home from Paris feeling jetlagged and irritated after a medical conference. Her flight was delayed. Her baggage was lost. Now she encounters a confusing, unthinkable scene as the taxi approaches her home. She can’t even get to her door, as the yellow police tape and squad cars block her entrance. Maura is not the only one who is shocked and bewildered. Everyone who sees her does a double take. Why? Because the victim of the shooting in front of her home looks exactly like her.
As a medical examiner, Dr. Isles instinctively wants answers. Because of the circumstances, however, she must recuse herself from this case. That doesn’t mean she won’t seek the truth on her own. She’s not entirely on her own. The police are involved – Detective Jane Rizzoli lends a hand, even though it is not her jurisdiction. Most of the information comes from a detective in the Newton Police Department, Rick Ballard. He knew the victim and agrees to do whatever he can to assist Maura.
My first thoughts about this book were that it is a little bit far-fetched. I can’t even write much about it without spoilers. Eventually, I decided to just see where the story would take me. When the remains of more victims started turning up, I wondered where this would end up. Could these cases possibly be related? Then we got snippets of a live victim – was this person still alive, or was this the author’s way of showing us how the killer operated? The killer – insane or simply evil?
There was even less of Detective Rizzoli in this one than there was in
The Sinner, and that was a bit disappointing. Having seen all that Maura went through with her ex-husband in that book, I felt guarded, even protective, about her relationships this time around. I don’t find Maura as unlikable as many readers do, apparently. I didn’t quite trust Ballard, even though he is a cop. Despite the almost tabloid bizarreness of the plot, I found this book hard to put down. There is quite a twist at the end that I did not see coming. Overall, it didn’t quite hit the mark as well as the previous book, but I still found it to be suspenseful, albeit creepy at times; therefore, I will definitely continue with the series. -
Maura Isles returns home from a business trip abroad to find a very strange reception. There are emergency vehicles clogging her street with neighbors and friends within the Boston Police Department looking at her as if they’d seen a ghost. That’s because the dead woman in the car in front of her house is her doppelgänger. But, she soon learns she’s more than a random lookalike...she’s the twin sister she never knew she had!
Obviously, this book grabs you from the very beginning and it never let me go. Maura’s pursuit of her past leads to some startling and stunning revelations, investigated by an eight-months pregnant Jane Rizzoli who didn’t let that slow her down one bit. Maura’s findings subject her to danger from unknown sources, which only heightens the anxiety. There are also two other situations in play that seem to be disconnected from Maura’s circumstances but deep down I knew they would eventually intersect. They both were harrowing, playing to my worst fears.
This is my most favorite in the series to date and I’ve enjoyed all of them. The narrator was just excellent and I hope she continues. I’m so enjoying these stories, even though they are nerve wracking at times...just the way I like it. -

I love thrillers, but I hate the type where every page is a blood bath, and the author focuses more on grossing out the reader than on trying to create a good story.
That's why I am so happy to have discovered Tess Gerritsen. She offers a page-turner that actually has a plot that makes me want to keep reading.
Body Double is one of my first Gerritsen books, but I wasn't hampered by the fact that I wasn't familiar with the characters. The author does a great job of making everyone accessible, while not giving TOO much backstory and boring the reader.
Dr. Isley, otherwise known as the "Queen of the Dead," is a medical examiner with a cloudy background. Even she isn't too sure of where she came from as she was adopted as an infant. Her past catches up to her when a woman who could be her double is found shot outside her apartment. Isley must discover who this woman was, who killed her, and why she's next on the list.
Full of twists and turns and enough mystery to keep you guessing until the end. Perfect blend of fear and excitement! -
The story opens with Dr. Maura Isles, the Boston medical examiner, in Paris. She had been attending a medical conference and now on her last day in Paris she is doing some touristy things. Museums, cafes, watching the tourists, and contemplating "what if". Then it is back to reality. Her plane is three hours late in departing, on arriving back in Boston she finds her luggage is lost, she is jet lagged. Could things get any worse? Yes! She takes a taxi home and is dozing in the back seat when she hears the taxi driver saying something is wrong. She wakes up to see police cars, lights flashing, near her house. The neighbors are standing around gawking. Then she sees Boston homicide Detective Jane Rizzoli. Maura lives in the suburb of Brookline. What is Rizzoli doing here? She is even more surprised by everyone's reaction. They look at her like they are seeing a ghost. The reason is that a woman was found shot to death in a car by Maura's house. Her doppelgänger. Maura is an adopted child and never knew her birth parents. A DNA test confirms that the mysterious doppelgänger is in fact her twin sister and sets Maura on a quest to learn about her twin sister and the parents she never knew. Growing up Maura had made up stories about her biological parents but reality is usually more brutal.
Pregnant women have prominent roles in this bone chilling thriller. Jane Rizzoli is eight months pregnant and very aware of her biological clock. She is still actively working homicide cases and has to endure comments and glances from co-workers. "Hey, I may be knocked up, but I'm not deaf!" she tells some other detectives up one point. "She's also armed" Maura reminds them. Maura's search for information on her sister and parents leads her to a remote cabin in Maine where the long-dead body of a pregnant woman is discovered buried in the woods. The investigation reveals that pregnant women across the country have been murdered for decades. Periodic chapters tell the story of a pregnant housewife who has been kidnapped and buried alive. Fighting to stay alive and save herself and her unborn baby.
This was a page turning thriller that kept me up at night wanting to read one more chapter and anxious to read the next book in the series.

I think the deeper into a book series you get the harder it is to write a review. Because all the things I enjoyed about the book are things that only make sense if you read the books that came before it.
In Body Double Dr. Isles is shocked to discover that a murdered woman looks exactly like her.
How nuts would it be, to see your doppelganger dead?
Dr. Isles with the help of Detective Jane Rizzoli set out to investigate who this woman was and why she died. As with all the book in this series the writing was amazing. The pacing was taunt and suspenseful. Tess Gerritsen manages to write books about dark subject matter without making it too depressing. She doesn't pull any punches and it revelation seems completely realistic.
A great series by a great author. -
Another well-written installment in the Rizzoli and Isles partnership. This one focuses on Isles and a shocking murder that hits too close to home for Maura.
But just because Rizzoli is super pregnant, don’t write her out of the action. And the secondary thread, which is the real thriller, also becomes a bit personal to Jane.
I love these ladies but I gotta admit, I just can’t see Jane as a Mom, but maybe that’s what I like about this series... it keeps moving forward and the characters keep growing.
If the next one is half as surprising, it will be an equally good read!! -

I just finished this book this afternoon and I utterly enjoyed it and couldn't put it down. I was completely gripped from the first page. The book is full of twists and turns and I was totally not expecting that ending! It was the first crime novel that I've read in a long time where I was wrong about who the killer was (I normally guess the killer correctly before I'm halfway through the book). I'm looking forward to reading some more of Tess's books in the future :)
PS: I also watch the TV show and I'm glad the TV version of Maura has a 'nicer' birth family! Paddy Doyle ain't so bad compared to Maura's birth parents in this book! -

Nature versus nurture. This story starts with a bang with Maura coming home from a trip to Paris. Outside the fridge by of her house in a car is the dead identical sister she never knew about. Rizzoli is 8 months pregnant and a investigating who murdered Anna.
The other plot revolves around a serial killer harvesting babies around the US. It is all linked to Maury’s natural parents. She finds answers in the end and walks away from her imprisoned psycho mother.
The twist with Rick Ballard was excellent. A shame that Maura is stuck for the time being in a sexless relationship with her catholic priest. I liked Mattie the last victim and her escape and discovery her husband Dwayne is a shallow narcissistic idiot.
All in all a good read. -

Spannend und trotzdem mit genug Tiefe auch wenn immer etwas passiert und es kein bisschen langatmig oder gar langweilig wird. Tolle Charaktere und ein für mich spannender Twist am Ende den ich nicht erwartet hätte! Super Rizzoli&Isles Fall - Ich lese ganz sicher weiter 5 Bücher hab ich ja noch mit den Beiden :) -

Boston medical examiner, Dr Maura Isles, was relaxing for a few days in Paris after a conference before heading home, and back to work. When she arrived back in Boston, she discovered the airlines had lost her luggage, so after filling in lost property forms, she finally hailed a cab to take her home. She was exhausted from the long flight, so when she roused herself from the doze she'd been in, the cabbie was braking hard, and talking to her...there were flashing blue lights and police everywhere, and they seemed to be right outside her house! She quickly exited the cab, and made her way down toward the crowd of police, to be greeting by shocked looks, looks of total confusion from her colleagues!
Detective Jane Rizzoli, who was very pregnant, was standing in the middle of what was obviously a crime scene, and when she noticed Maura, she looked dazed, like she was in a trance, as she looked from the vehicle in front of her, to Maura....
Maura and Jane are thrust into a crime so horrendous, so horrifying, it's hard to comprehend. With the murder of Anna, who, after a DNA test, turns out to be Maura's twin sister (with Maura being an only child!), the trail leads to disturbing evidence of something far more sinister than it first seemed!
With the twists and turns of a really good thriller, the dark secrets of the past, both recent and long ago, this story had me unable to put it down. I was sure I had the 'bad guy' but I was stunned to realize I was wrong, and totally shocked to find out who it was!
I totally recommend this to all lovers of suspense...Tess Gerritsen writes a masterful tale! -

Kitabın geneli çok durağandı. Maura'nın ailesi ve geçmişini okumak yerine Rizzoli ile birlikte araştırmayı, ipucu aramayı tercih ederim. Kitapta bu sefer tahminlerim beni yanılttı. Katil ile ilgili bariz açık olan bir şey vardı. Kesinlikle o demiştim fakat ardında çok başka şeyler çıktı.
Bu sefer ki katil gerçekten çok kötü ve acımasızdı, nefret ettim. Ayrıca o pislik kocadan ve serinin başından beri olan pislik kadın doktor O'Donnell'den de. Asıl öylelerinin gebermesi lazım. Dr. O'Donnell'ın sonu umarım o çok sempati beslediği katillerden gelir.
Sonunu biraz anlamsız buldum. Ben daha farklı şekilde beklerdim. Sanki oldu bitti gibi oldu. Yine de güzeldi. -
A nail biter with some literary depth!
Boston medical examiner, Dr Maura Isles, returns home from a working vacation at a forensic pathology conference and is shocked to discover that her home is a murder crime scene with herself starring in the role of victim. Chaos and confusion reign until consultation with detective Jane Rizzoli and further investigation reveal that the victim, Maura Isles' doppelgänger, not only shares her blood type and birth date but, based on DNA investigation, is actually an identical twin. The questions are deliciously obvious to the investigators and the reader alike - who was the actual intended victim, Dr Isles or her hitherto unknown sister?; if it was Dr Isles, then why did her unknown twin come onto the scene at that precise moment; if it was her sister, then what was she doing parked in Dr Isles' driveway?; who was their mother and why was Dr Isles unaware that she had a twin sister? I won't waste any further ink on plot synopsis because, frankly, nothing further need be said. Nobody could possibly put Body Double down once they've read, oh, maybe three or four paragraphs!
There can be no denying it - Gerritsen is an extraordinarily skilled artist of the realism school when it comes to painting a thriller canvas! She brushes a background completed with broad daring strokes but, at the same time, completes a foreground with attention to the most meticulous detail. Body Double succeeds on any number of fronts. Rather than dwelling purely on a summary of a plot, as exciting as it is, of course, it's more worthwhile spending a little time on the enjoyable successes that set Body Double apart from more run-of-the-mill thrillers.
Body Double provides an eerie, realistic chronicle of the development of a psychopathic serial murderer.
We are treated to superb examples of the use of modern police investigation techniques including, of course, forensic pathology and computer analysis.
Readers are forced to ask themselves difficult philosophical questions relating to adoption: To what extent do adoptees have a right to their natural history? To what extent do mothers giving up their children for adoption have the right to confidentiality? Nature or nurture? What is the prime determinant of personality, intelligence and skill make-up of adopted children? (Now here's a real toughie for you ... if you were an adopted child and you came into the certain knowledge that your mother was a schizophrenic and a convicted criminal, how would you feel about that and would you feel the compulsion to visit and learn more about her?)
Her story also forces us to ask ourselves what we might do faced with unresolvable, impossible "urges" - in this case, a sexual attraction to a priest who is clearly aware of the attraction and yet is absolutely committed to his vocation!
Today, we are well acquainted with serial killers such as Paul Bernardo, for example, whose name alone in Ontario is sufficient to conjure up a case of shivers. In Body Double, Gerritsen has given us a moment of respite by creating a victim who somehow found the inner strength to resist and confound her stalker, torturer and would-be murderer! (The ending of this little sub-plot will make you want to stand up and cheer at the same time as your laughing yourself silly!)

Being a fan of the hit TNT television show, Rizzoli & Isles, I felt drawn to the books that inspired the characters. Tess Gerritsen vividly brings Boston homicide detective, Jane Rizzoli, and medical examiner, Dr. Maura Isles, to life in the pages of this book. This is not the first book in the series, but one doesn't need to have read the prior novels to understand what's occurring in the plot. Gerritsen backtracks to prior knowledge when it's needed to discuss pertinent backstory. I chose this book because the description on Amazon grabbed my interest more than any other of the books in this series. With that said, I found this story so interesting and ultimately captivating that author Tess Gerritsen has found a new reader in me. I recently ordered a few more of her books from this series.
The fan of the T.V. show and the novels will be able to detect the foundation for the characters in the books, but Janet Tamaro, who is responsible for writing the scripts for TNT, has taken Gerritsen's characters and made them uniquely her own. In fact, there are times when the reader wonders if she’s reading about the same characters that inhabit the television series. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. There are enough interesting character points present in both interpretations to hold one’s attention. Overall, the basis for Tamaro’s television characters can be found in the writing of author, Tess Gerritsen.
Gerritsen is a physician in addition to being an author. You can feel it in the way she writes. She speaks to the reader through her character, Dr. Isles, who seamlessly explains to us the intricate details involved in the novels’ murders. Anyone who watches Rizzoli & Isles on TNT knows that humor plays a large role in the stories. On T.V., Dr. Maura Isles is one of the most quirky, lovable characters on television. The literary version is much more cool and removed. The humor that enlivens the television series is not evident in the novel version. The books don’t seem to suffer as a result of that fact. The stories are so fast-paced and pulling that one forgets that there’s very little humor in them. I was in awe of how intricate and creative Gerritsen’s story was. In Body Double, Maura is faced with a murder victim who looks distinctly like her. As the plot unfolds, the story leads Maura and the reader down a path of discovery behind the adopted Dr. Isles’s family history. What occurs as we reach the conclusion is compellingly intriguing. It’s the kind of writing that makes it nearly impossible to put down. I read this book in two days. Body Double is a fantastic, quick, mind-bending read. With it, Tess Gerritsen has earned herself another fan. -

Ypač sustiprėjo šitas nusistatymas perskaičius, kad kitame romane ‘Dvynės’ dar ir nusikaltimas apie asmeninius santykius suksis - nužudyta Ailz dvynė sesuo apie kurią niekas nėra girdėjęs. Visgi praėjus kuriam laikui ir prireikus greitai suvalgomos blevyzgos nusprendžiau pabandyti.
Ir tiesą sakant, nebuvo taip jau blogai. Ricoli - gal kad jos mažiau - nebeerzina savo charakteriu, panašesnė į normalų žmogų, Ailz, žinoma, kaip buvau perspėta, alpsta dėl kiekvieno - vedusio ar kunigo, seno ar jauno, bet bendrai tai visi asmeniškumai visai harmoningai įsipaišo į siužetą. Buvau jau pasiruošusi žymėtis, koks nusikaltimo detalių ir pašalinio veiksmo santykis knygoje, kad galėčiau efektingai paburbėti, bet buvau gana maloniai nustebinta - pasirodė jis visai padorus šį kartą.
Bent jau iki tol kol visas detektyvas vėl neišsisprendė pats. Čia būtų taip pat, jeigu mėnesį bandytum tirti nusikaltimą, kažkur lyg ir pasistūmėtum, įdomių kampų surastum, o tada nusikaltėlis tiesiog ateitų prisiduot ir valio - case closed. Tyrimas visai įdomus, bet niekur neatvedė. -

Cuarta entrega de la serie Rizzoli & Isles, centrándose mucho más en Isles. Libro lleno de giros y con un final que no me esperaba para nada, debo decir que ni lo sospeché, y eso que con tanta novela negra a mis espaldas generalmente lo veo venir, por lo que cuando aparecen estos giros inesperados, le caen las 5 estrellas sin dudarlo.

Я познайомилася з Ріццолі через «Хірурга» під час відпустки. Тоді голова була ну дуже замакітрена і потребувала чогось легкого - я наївно очікувала, що детектив буде на раз-два, підставить всі змінні і, прочитавши, я й думати забуду про всіх героїв. Але ні! Ріццолі, головна детективка, виявилася в «Хірурзі» доволі відштовхуючою, але крутою героїнею і (що найкраще) оточуючі її герої були не гіршими.
Так само вийшло й з «Двійником». Головна - обабіч Ріццолі - героїня працює патологоанатомкою. Одного разу, повернувшись з чергової конференції, вона бачить біля дому купу поліції, сусідів, які дивляться на неї як на повсталу з мертвих і по-справжньому мертву жінку, яка один в один виглядає, як вона. Такий поворот подій може вивести з рівноваги, чи не так?
Не буду спойлити, бо настійливо раджу «Двійника» тим, хто в пошуці хорошого сюжету - я здогадувалася, хто в чому винен, але розгадати загадку до кінця зуміла відсотків хіба на 70:) і напруга - обожнюю, коли книжки не відпускають, а тут я не спала майже всю ніч, гарячково гортаючи сторінки - хто ж за ними ховається, га? -
Another good book in the Rizzoli and Isles series. I liked getting more background on Maura's life, although if I were her it would definitely be unsettling. Weaving past history and past murders to the current murder was an interesting plot and a good read.
My only complaint is I would have definitely liked more in the epilogue. Unfortunately in series like this there seldom is that thorough of epilogue with all the players in the plot. -
Gerritsen tackles the 'nature versus nurture' debate in this next book in the Rizzoli and Isles series. A great thriller, filled with familial bonding and questions about one's upbringing with or without parents.

Dit boek heeft me wel wat slaap gekost, maar dat komt omdat het zo spannend is. Vanmorgen kon ik ook niet langer wachten, maar moest het uit. Ondanks dat ik zo weg moet. Ik vind dit boek het beste van de serie tot nu toe. Het boek is spannend en interessant en het verhaal zit goed in elkaar. In dit boek is Jane ook niet zo bezig met bijvoorbeeld de man-vrouwverhoudingen en andere issues. Daardoor komt ze veel sympathieker over. Al deze dingen maakt dat ik dit boek vier dikke sterren geef. Hopelijk is deel 5 ook zo goed of zelfs nog beter.
