2.5 stars, rounded up
I picked up this book from a used bookstore because look at that cover. How could I not? I like trying an old skool romance now and then and when it's a vintage paranormal there's no way I can refuse.
The good:
- There's a bunch of plotty action in an interesting world.
- We get two romances for the price of one. It's rare to have them together instead of split into different books.
- I wasn't expecting much consent because again, look at that cover, but the hero does a good job consdering.
- Sha'Nara's change of heart is gradual and earned.
The not-so-good:
- Helllloooo paranormal instalust into instalove.
- While the plot starts strong it dissembles into double crosses on top of triple crosses, and I gave up trying to keep everything straight.
- The setting is monotonous until the last chapter, when we finally get off the spaceships.
To be honest I wasn't expecting much from this $1 find, but I had fun reading it despite the weaknesses. I was actually looking forward to tracking down the next book in the series for the heck of it, but it appears Fox never wrote it. Ah, well. -
It eventually earned a 4 but there for a bit...
The premise was interesting. The issue was the h.
She's the enemy. She, along with her charge, find themselves kidnapped by what amounts to a group of psychic refugees. She tries the H's patience so many times, and he's nice to her in spite of everything. She keeps trying to escape you see. I can understand it to a point. That point is probably the time she almost succeeds and finds herself being dragged on a rescue mission. Even when faced with the horror of what her people are doing to his, even when almost captured, even after he's nearly beaten to death to keep her from being molested by some sort of humanoid reptiles, she's ready to bolt back to her people - for her career and because she learns something the humanoid reptiles have that will incapacitate his people. She wants to let her people know about it so they can use it.
Yeah. That's the sort of heroine we have. It's not until she comes face to face with what's left of one of his people that she'd captured before that she changes her mind.
I get that too abrupt an about-face would be suspect, but come ON. Then again, maybe if they'd taken her to THAT wing before...
Of course, when she DOES finally get it, she's convinced she just has to talk to them. Uh...right. Granted, most of the leaders were decent but you gotta have proof. She does get the proof but the risk...
I had no issues with the H. -
Wow, so I did not expect to like this... but once I picked it up I couldn't stop. I mean really, this is the first sentence:
"He came to her in her dreams, as he always did when she'd had a particularly stressful day."
Sounds kinda lame and cheesy right? Ok, so maybe it is, and there was definitely a fair amount of purple prose, but somehow I really enjoyed this book. I think it was a combination of the silliness (cuss words like "shibit" and "farding") and the cuteness. I genuinely liked all the characters and both the main romance and the sub-plot romance were good. Some of it was predictable but I enjoyed reading how it all played out. Definitely an unexpectedly delightful way to spend an evening. -
Halfway through this book I was reminded of "Battlestar Galactica", the 70's series with Lorne Greene, not the SyFy channel remake. Of course, I don't think there was any telekenetic sex on that show. Fun read.

I'm not a sci-fi person, but I loved this book. I attached very quickly to the characters and couldn't let go until I knew they were safe!
