Okay, for me it is always We Have Always Lived in the Castle, one of my favorite books, and my personal favorite written by Shirley Jackson. And I like The Haunting of Hill House, too, and the stunning story, "The Lottery," but I am not the level of Jackson geek work that Robert Kirby collects in this carnival Fun House of a book. I don't approach quite that level, not having read most of her work (yet), and having only skimmed biographies for juicy tidbits. But if you are a Jackson fan, as all the collected authors here seem to be, you will want to own this one.
The collection, including Josh Simmons, Annie Murphy, Colleen Frakes, Jon Macy, Asher & Lillie Craw, Gabrielle Gamboa, Maggie Umber, W. Woods, Jennifer Camper, & Robert Triptow (and Kirby, of course), is, as collections go, uneven (or if you are a glass full kinda person, call it eclectic). I very much liked Josh Simmons's opening page, drawn so differently than his nihilistic apocalyptic comics, and Annie Murphy's biographical piece. For so many of them, you had to be there (or, had read the books or stories on which they were based), but they still speak to Jackson's ideas, on, say architecture (gothic haunted houses) and food, for instance.
I really like Maggie Umber's rendition of Jackson's "The Tooth" the best . And I didn't know Jackson also had drawn cartoons! Well, I think if you are not a true fan, this would seem like a 2-3 star work, but if you love Jackson, you have to have it, four stars, such a variety of fan fiction and non fiction. I am (a fan), and have it (the book), though still aspire to the next level of fandom. -
**Update 5/10/17: The Shirley Jackson Project won second place in the Graphic Novels category at the 60th annual New England Book Show on 5/9/17. Congrats to artist Michael Fahy for his beautiful design work, and to Ninth Art Press.**
Now that my latest anthology has been published and is beginning to get out into the world, I finally sat down and read it, cover to cover. Overall I'm really very happy with it; it had been a dream project of mine for a long time. The contributors—among them Josh Simmons, Annie Murphy, Colleen Frakes, Jon Macy, Asher & Lillie Craw, Gabrielle Gamboa, Maggie Umber, W. Woods, Jennifer Camper, & Robert Triptow—all did a great job, in stories that are alternately heartfelt, witty, dark, poignant, eerie, cryptic, and revealing. I only hope Shirley herself would've approved of this tribute volume to her.
"...an anthology that honors Jackson by refusing to reduce her work to any one element."
Greg Hunter, The Comics Journal
"It would make a superb text for any class studying her work, Mid-Century modern culture, or feminist literature. This is an exquisite example of how comics could be incorporated into academia and used to teach in a way traditional textbooks fail."
Cathy Camper, Lambda Literary

A lovely tribute to Shirley Jackson. I don’t purchase a lot of books, as I favor the library or ebooks, but this one I am glad I own in my personal collection.

An absolute must have for Shirley Jackson fans. This is just so damn cool.

This book gets five stars for existing, basically. Shirley Jackson forever! Thanks so much to Kelsey for getting this for me at Short Run! Some of these comics are really great, some are just OK, but I love the idea of a collection of comics inspired and adapted from an author I love. Definitely worth a look.

My wife got me this "for no reason" as is inscribed by her on the inside. The actual reason is that I am a fan of Shirley Jackson's work, obviously. Seventeen different artists illustrate an equal number of Ms. Jackson's stories in this book. It helps you to absorb what is being put across in those frames if you are familiar with the stories but it isn't necessary - the black and white cartoons are entertaining in their own cartoon way. There is a bio section about each of the artists at the end of this 128 page book. It's a different kind of fun read.

A must have for Jackson completists! It made me want to read more of her work (and reread other stories) as well as the recent biography. And what more can you ask of a tribute project? Read some of her work beforehand so you can appreciate the humor, the poignancy and the domestic horror of these portraits.

A beautiful, haunting, charming and eclectic tribute to an author whose work I am now very interested in. There are so many gems in here, I'm not going to bother calling any out. Magnificently curated. Definitely worth reading if you love comics, literature, horror, autobio, and/or Shirley Jackson!

This compilation of comics is a tribute to the life and work of Shirley Jackson, published in 2016, her centennial year. While the quality of the comics was sometimes uneven, I enjoyed the book thoroughly, maybe because I was predisposed to do so? I would still recommend it for Shirley Jackson fans.
