The elves have a plan to save humanity…by enslaving them. And the angels are too busy to intervene.
Aaru is at war. The rebel angels are calling for Sam’s exclusion from the Ruling Council and her banishment to Hel. But Sam’s isn’t the only future at risk. If they’re defeated, Gregory and his brothers will face exile, losing everything they’ve spent billions of years to build.
The fate of heaven and earth is in the balance, and only an angel from Hel can save them both.

Move over, A Court of Mist and Fury, I've got a new favorite book of the year. ❤

Fun fact - and I think Sam would enjoy this one: It's actually possible to laugh yourself six feet under! At least according to the internet. (Cuz everything you read on the internet is true, right?) No, but seriously; there are some pretty well documented cases out there!

The reason why I'm mentining this is because this book (AKA my PRECIOUSSSSS) is actually a good indication of your body's susceptibility to death by mirth & naughtly giggles.

Oh, man I haven't been this entertained in months, if not YEARS;-) And that's saying something, considering I just finished Magic Binds by Ilona Andrews the other day for chrissakes.

As Aaru finds itself engulfed in a civil war and influential voices are calling out for Sam's banishment from the Ruling Council, the elves are finally on the move:

Millions of years after their planet was devoured by their sun, the elves are ready for their second exodus. How ironic that an ex-imp/devouring spirit turned Angel of Chaos is the only real obstacle standing in the way of world domination and enslavement of the human race.

Who do you turn to when your omnipotent boyfriend is caught up in his own problems; the Icelandic people are welcoming their soo-to-be masters with open arms and your earthly abode is brimming with loveable rejects of every shape, size and race? Well, to the underdogs, of course!

And what a group of unruly misfits they are.
How fortunate that "youngsters" often see solutions where old demons and angels simply hold grudges. Sometimes, the solution is delightfully bloody and gory. (You go, guys!) Other times it's squee-worthy and adorable beyond belief!

Wanna know what my favorite moment in the book was: I simply refer to it as the "laundry incident."

But: Don't expect everything to run smoothly with an impish Angel of Chaos in charge. In fact, I can't wait to see what song the elves will sing of this incident once the dust and the angel feathers settle down;-)

(Not that it's likely to happen any time soon, mind you;-))

    I've only got two questions:
    Where's the next book!?
And when do we get to meet Samael? ;-)

I'm actually stupid pump for this book.

I hate every bitch who reads this book before me.

  • Jeanny

First my thoughts on the cover art: It's definitely not run of the mill. The chosen color scheme, the details on the wings, & the model's stance are all beautifully done.
Next comes the disclaimer: Exodus (Imp, #8) eARC kindly provided by author Debra Dunbar in exchange for an honest review.
& lastly my review: I've always enjoyed reading the imp series but it most be said Debra truly out did herself this time. Exodus (Imp, #8) was a highly entertaining read with excellent editing, a tight action packed plot, & best of all it managed to surprise me. I found myself continuously giggling at Sam's antics & would recommend this book to any one in need of action packed comic relief. 5 stars a quick & easy read.

This is a series that I wish I had found outside of a reading challenge so that I could have started this series from the beginning! What a great read!

Okay, so book 8, the last one available for me to read in the main series line. Ah, I’ll start with that.

This is a series that has many many ‘other’ side books that got published along the way. I’ve read none of them. As such I can’t really say how much I missed by not reading them, but I can say that Sam, as the main character, likes making a lot of references to stuff that occurred to other characters which I assume got detailed in other books. Like Dar suddenly found himself in Chicago doing stuff with an angel – mostly mentioned and unseen (but for glimpses) in the main series, but there’s a book that showcases the two of them – Dar and . . . I think it is Astra. And the ‘half-elf half-demon’ woman, Wyatt’s sister, also has her own series – and is largely only seen in glimpses in the main series line. And there is one or more stories involving Nyala (Wyatt’s other sister). So the series Imp, has at least three series that are involved – Imp itself, Half Breed (Amber, the half-succubus half-elf), Northern Wolves (I’ve no idea who all appears in this side series – oh, I think it might involve that wolf pack up in Alaska that Sam bumped into in one of her books) – and stand-alone stories involving side characters (so, three series plus, as noted).

Enough of that. This book here – Exodus. As everyone knows, the Exodus refers to the time when Moses led his people from their slavery in Egypt to their freedom in the desert. Wait, no, that’s not what this book is about. Let’s try that again.

This book, titled Exodus, does involve a migration, though it involves the migration of elves, not Moses people. This is a story line that actually continues from the prior book – which reminds me – yes, read all the Imp books in order – in which the Elves laid the groundwork to migrate to Earth.

At the same time that Elves are sneaking across the border (so to speak, though Sam does make a joke about building a wall around Hel (where both Demons and Elves live (as well as others like Dwarves and some humans)), civil unrest continues in Anaru (however the Angel spirit realm is spelled). This leads Sam to spend time in this book trying to find people to help her with the elf issue (finding and deporting them), and the Angel war issue (trying to create an army despite the fact that no one in Hel actually cares that she’s called the leader of Hel among the Angels).

So, Sam’s hoping around on earth (Iowa, France, Iceland), in Hel, and in the Angel realm doing stuff. Oh, and there’s both a cute baby dragon, and a less cute adult dragon in the book. Fun times. Sad that I now have to wait for book 9 – if it actually exists, the series page on GoodReads lists a book 9 and 10, though no covers, no dates, and no information really, about those books – to appear. Or I could read the side books. Maybe. Problem there is that I like Sam. I’m not sure I’ll like Amber’s stories, or any of the others.

There's nothing more exciting than a new release in the Imp series and although it feels like I've been waiting for quite a while for Exodus, the wait was totally worth it.

Throughout the course of this series, readers have witnessed resident Iblis/Ha-Satan/Angel of Chaos/Imp Sam Martin slowly transform from a hell-raiser, to a demon with many titles and even more responsibilities. Trying to balance everything is oftentimes an effort in futility on Sam's part, and that's very apparent in this installment. Sam has one of the biggest challenges on her hands thus far - trying to keep the elves in Hel where they belong. The elves have other plans, as they want to cross over to the human realm and enslave the humans. Without any sort of concrete evidence of where exactly the elves want to set up camp, Sam is being pulled in all directions as more and more elves infiltrate the human realm. Aside from that, Aaru's war is heating up and once again, Sam is the epicenter of their dissension. The fate of both the human realm and Aaru rests in the hands of an imp with much too much on her plate, but lucky for her, she's got quite the posse ready and willing to help her out.

One of my favorite aspects of this series is the relationship between Sam and her angel, Gregory. Their relationship has finally found some solid footing amidst their shaky world(s) and while readers know that Sam and Gregory will go to great lengths to preserve what they've found in one another, that's never been more apparent than it was in Exodus. Gregory's status as an Angel of the Order hangs in the balance as he fights alongside Sam and yet, that doesn't stop him all that much from doing what he has to do to protect both Sam and Aaru. Yes, his vibration pattern is severely out of whack at this point and it'll certainly be interesting to see what fate has in store for the Ancient Revered One.

Dare I say that Exodus was my favorite installment to date? It seems like this series went from fun and games to Serious Business in the blink of an eye. And yet, the humor is still in abundance, which provides plenty of much needed comic relief in the middle of so much tension and battle. I'm sure fans of this series will love the direction this installment of the series has taken, and I can't wait to see what Debra brings next in Queen of the Damned.

*Many thanks to Debra Dunbar for providing a copy in exchange for my honest opinion.

Exodus is book 8 in the Imp series. It is told in first person POV from main character Sam.

Sam is Ha-Satan, the Iblis, and she is an Angel of Chaos. She is also the significant other of the most powerful Archangel in existence, Gregory. To me, their relationship is always my most favorite part of these books. I love them together.

I enjoyed this book but it felt too political for me at times in terms of all the red tape and having their hands tied when they should have been kicking ass and handling things from the get go rather than going around and around with discussions and voting.

I enjoyed the action and adventure and seeing most of my favorite characters from the other books.

I felt that this book was rushed at the end and the pacing was off for the amount of time spent discussing other aspects of this story. I'm not happy with how quickly the ending "battle" happened and how abruptly it ended.

Overall, I give Exodus 3.5 stars. I look forward to reading the next book in this series.

Audible: I added the whispersync audible narration to this kindle book. I don't recommend this as an audio only book. The narrator was easy to understand and that was good but she didn't have a good array of voices. The voices sounded very similar in most cases and her male voices weren't really very manly sounding. It was okay as an audible but if you do it, I suggest as an add-on to the kindle so you can also follow along or switch to reading when need-be.

What a crazy cliffhanger. Sam has so much on her plate that she can't see the end of it all. I am surprised she doesn't just allow things to happen naturally without getting involved. Angels and elves aren't her responsibility but she can't help herself. If she is a tool of Fate, then it all makes sense why things happen the way it does.

  • Amyiw

I love the series... usually, and this one was a game changer. I want to go on and read the next right away, but I'm caught up. Drat it. OK so Raphael's book comes out soon and I've preordered it and I have a couple of spin offs that I can read but... I wanna see what happens next!

Lots of things are happening in this one, the war in Aaru comes to a head. No it is not a cliffhanger though everything has changed. The Elves are doing some really crappy things like sending bunches of their people into the human realm. Many are the lows of elves and Sam is now learning a new aspect of the elves and their trickery. There is a new little dragon, as cute as can be, lighting things on fire, and making Sam need another acre or two of land. Then the elves, how to keep them alive? Should she. I would say this will change how Amber accepted, at least it should. I wish I liked the Half-breed books as much but they just don't have the humor. This wasn't as fun as some of the books, but I really loved where it took all the players in the end. ha!

  • Abra

I really enjoyed book eight. This series got bogged down a few books ago with Sam having new responsibilities in each book until it got really annoying.

In Exodus Sam is trying to keep the elves from taking over the Earth and enslaving humans. The rebel angels are on the elves' side and want the elves to guide humanity into being more enlightened so the angels don't have to. They don't believe that in the last two million years the elves have devolved and are not the highly moral beings they used to be. The rebels also want to lock Aru shut and leave the humans forever. They want to dissolve the Iblis position and kick Sam off the council and out of Aru.

I've wanted to know more about what's going on in Aru for a while and we find out a lot in Exodus. This book also had a lot of Gregory, which was nice since he was mostly missing a few books ago. He's my favorite hero of all time so I love when he's around. There were lots of various kinds of demons, which is really fun. The writing is always so good and so funny.

Exodus is book eight of the urban fantasy Imp series.

To get the very best experience from this series I highly recommend reading them in order.

Samantha Martin (Sam) is a demon; an angel of chaos. Sam has a very busy life with her new role as Iblis, the leader of Hel. This book's story involves a planned exodus from Hel, of the Elvish nations. They wish to move to the human world, where they will become the new rulers. It's only Sam and a handful of friends who see this as a bad thing.

Meanwhile the angel wars continue and Sam must find an army of demons to help stop the rogues.

Another fast-paced plot with moments of humour that had me laughing out loud. I loved the antics of the Elvish groups and how they interacted with their new environment. Plus Sam's continuing battles with human local authorities over her rule-breaking are hilarious. Bring on book nine!

  • Melinda

What a wild and marvellous ride. I love this series, the characters, the chaos, the action. It's all going on. I especially love that our heroine is not all cutesy and noble and amazing. I love how the author has crafted this whole series, building on previous stuff to get the readers to this stage. Brilliant.

  • Fangs for the Fantasy

The elves are once again up to no good. Now that they've managed to secure the blessings of Angels who simply want to be rid of the work of improving humans and hunker down in Aaru. The elves plan to leave Hel behind and become the new rulers of earth. Sam knows that she has to put a stop to this but what can one Angel of Chaos do? Sam turns to her angelic boyfriend only to find that things in Aaru have gotten so out of control that he doesn't really have the time to help. With a baby dragon living in her backyard and Wyatt refusing to house her newly acquired guests things are about to get complicated for our favourite imp once more.

I am going to say upfront that I unabashedly love this series. I read it in one day and simply could not put it down. I kept saying just one more chapter, then one more page, then one more paragraph until I found myself at the end. Exodus is filled with action and laugh out loud moments. With lines like, "Nobody destroys a tray of bacon and gets mercy, Nobody." It's impossible to read and not giggle. For the record I tend to agree with Sam on her assessment of the importance of bacon.

Sam has grown so much as a character since we first met her in A Demon Bound. Yes, she's still scrappy, with a good head on her shoulders and loves a good fight but she also has grown to care for the people who have become members of her household. Sure, for the large part these beings have been fostered on her throughout the series and they started out as an imposition but now she's not willing to risk their safety. Even the lowly demons in her household have come to mean something to her. At times I do miss some of the antics that she got up to but this new mature Sam is still full of great one liners which tend to fill some of the void. I even like the way that she considers how her relationship with Wyatt has evolved. When Wyatt refuses to help her house the elves, she doesn't push him and instead considers the fact that though they are no longer lovers, she wants to retain their friendship. Yes, our favourite little demon is all grown up.

Unfortunately we didn't get to see a lot of Sam and Gregory having intimate moments in this novel. I miss the way he used to call her cockroach. There always seems to be so much going on this series that these two never get any downtime. I will however say that I'm annoyed that Gregory seems to have no problem simply dropping things in Sam's lap without consideration of how he is changing her life and thus making it more difficult. For an angel, he's not a very considerate lover at all. This is why I love when Gregory inadvertently promises a farmer to put in a word with the good man upstairs, that Sam doesn't let him foist that responsibility upon her. Other than drinking coffee and caring for Sam, Gregory hasn't really evolved much and I think it's time he begin to change as well.

At the heart of the issue in Exodus is the fact that the elves are coming to earth and a battle is brewing in heaven. Angels can be such epic assholes with their vibrations and purity though they don't seem to be immune to Chinese food and coffee. Gregory sees where this is going and though he has been trying to head it off, a confrontation is coming. There hasn't been a battle this big since the Angels of Chaos were thrown out of heaven and now, Gregory is preparing to do it again. He knows that what is at stake is the loss of his home and he's desperate to hold onto to Aaru. It's yet another sign of how much Sam has changed that she is not only willing to fight this battle with him but is also worried about Gregory losing his home. She's willing to put her feelings aside and separate from him for a time if necessary. That being said, I do wish Gregory would occasionally give a thought to how Sam feels about Hel. Sure, Hel wouldn't be pleasant to an archangel but Sam doesn't find Aaru particularly pleasant either.

Sam isn't the only character who has grown a lot. Niylah has moved from being meek and dependent to someone who has no problem netting elves and facing down a dragon with a powerful hose. Each time she does something fabulous, Sam is amazed. It's clear that she's come to care for the young woman and even worries about how the presence of elves will effect her. I really like how much Niylah has changed but at the same time I wish that this would shown instead of told. I feel like we don't get to know a lot about Niylah's emotions beyond her ongoing and understandable fear of elves.

Wooowweee! I've been dying for this book; riveted with enough anticipation to faint once when it showed up on my e-reader ready to download.

Exodus, without spoiling anything, is everything you know and love about the Imp series. It seems like Sam is still doing her thing, mucking things up and somehow always coming out on top albeit in her same, "oh shit" fashion. There's plenty of killing, explosions, and general impish shenanigans filled with a host of old and new characters alike. Like the New Guy and New New Guy... and lots more.

And honestly, it rocks. Because who do you gonna call when you have matters of Aaru and Hel? That's right. Sam's ragtag team of misfits and home for the wayward. It's impressive the people and things she's come to collect since her humble lowly Imp days.

I loved this book and am chomping at the bit for the next. Sadly it might be another year until the ninth book comes out. Ugh.

    Hold on!

I did not put it down... Full of unexpected twists and turns. So , where is Book 9 ? I Will find it.

  • Vivian Smotherman

Have devoured every book in the series thus far. Debra has done an amazing job of keeping the storyline going without getting stupid about things. Our hero continues to grow (a little slow in the last few books). Angel Sex is awesome! And the characters and relationships all have depth. I could use a few more explanations, it seems reasonable to me that at certain times someone might ask a few more questions when hints of important things pop up unexpectedly. Then again that's probably why I keep reading each book. Looking for those answers.

  • Jasmine

    2.5- 3 Stars
For me this is a fun, kinda silly series, and if you don't take it seriously it can be highly entertaining. Book 8 had some great moments that come to mind, but that being said I found that despite how much action and big events happened here as a whole it was all pretty underwhelming. It overall lacked that same spark that the earlier books had, and I think my interest in this series as a whole has seriously declined. So for now, while might read the other two books I currently consider them fairly low priority on my tbr.

  • Rayna

    Rushed ending

I started reading the series a few days ago when I receive book one. So far it was ok, There were a few times it reminded me of a couple other books but I liked it, I liked the heroine. This last book and a few others, I noticed the endings are quick and abrupt. Conflict resolution in what felt like ten pages. I just would have like more than for of five lines from the bad guy before he died.

  • Elizabeth Meadows

    Wrapping up the series

This book feels like the preparation of the end for this series. Debra Dunbar's Imp Series is winding down to its final book. Samantha has achieved a new level of impressive power without the prestige of the previous Iblis. Her new found empathy and compassion guide her path to redemption. Irreverent humor including puns and outright mocking are shared by Sam, Gregory and members of her household. Now I need to buy book number nine.

  • Ann Zdunczyk

    Elves!!

Yes elves are coming to earth!! Iceland wants to keep theirs but the others are fair game. Boy did they under estimate humans. When the high lord made his speech about being the new ruler of America he was laughed at, not a good thing since the elf guards started shooting arrows at them and killed some. Little Red to the rescue!!

  • Andi

This was slower than the last one, with the majority focused on the prelude to the war between the angels. Sam is also dealing with the sudden appearance of elves around the world.

There were some fun parts related to Little Red (the baby dragon), Nyalla (Sam’s amazing half demon/elf protege), and Diablo (Sam’s half demon/horse hybrid). But overall, this felt like another filler installment.

  • Gail

    So...

I'm in love with an Imp 😱

Also an Angel or two (Gregory an Raph) a baby dragon, few humans, a fallen, couple of lows.........my list grows as the series continues.

What I'm getting at is this is a brilliant series, with fantastic characters written by an awesome author 😀😀👍👍👍

  • Tameka

Those two idiots that are on the board seem to harbor way too much hate for "Cockroach". I understand that change is good but when you are trying to negate the good of people by placing folks that you believe will sway your way something is up. Who the hell is this damn angel so is dropping choas all over the place.

  • Candace

Once again I was underwhelmed with the 8th in the series. So much happening and yet not that interesting. I really can't see what the point is for the whole series. It feels like it could go on forever with no resolution. It definitely needs more sex!

  • Karen

Angels in Hel & Demons in Aaru!

    With Sam's work load increasing..
It would seem there's little time for our favourite Imp, to spend time together with her feathered friend..
    Then everything changes!

  • Koffe

Honestly don't have time to write reviews busy with other things. Hence I will keep it short. There's not a whole lot of improvement to the story but it isn't getting bad or boring either. So I'd say this is a solid 4 star series.

  • jeliy

This series would be so much better if the author stopped referring to trump in her books. Finally the narrator Angela Rysk is reading with emotion, but because of the trump references throughout the books I will only give them a 2 star rating.
