Documentary Film: An Insider's Perspective Reviews
-
If you need a textbook on documentary film, production, aesthetics, history and examples, this is an excellent textbook. It is written by filmmakers from Boston, a leading city in the development, production and study of documentary film. As a result, the information is interesting, varied and practical.
Disclosure:
I wrote a chapter for the text called "Four Fringe Documentaries": Symbiopsychotaxiplasm (William Greaves 1968), Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story (Todd Haynes 1988), The Beaver Trilogy (Trent Harris 2001), and Hoax Canular (Dominic Gagnon 2014).
These remarkable and entertaining films from four different decades question the authenticity and formal qualities of the documentary. This may be the most obscure chapter. Overall the book is a clear look at all aspects of the form.
