5,000 stars. The title got it right--this book is everything you hope for and more--witty and fun and sweet without being cloying. This one will immediately improve your day, even if a mean crow steals your best work hat.

four of my most favorite things:
    1) cats
    2) neckties
    3) variety of hats
    4) spontaneous napping

....it really is the best book ever.

  • Andrew Shaffer

    Jeremy is mean.

I read this way back when it came out, and have had fond memories of it ever since, so I decided it was time for a re-read. I love it so much! Peanut Butter is so sweet, and Jeremy is such a jerk. The beauty of their relationship is how despite being very different in so many ways, they each are getting something that they need from the friendship. Jeremy in particular is a complex character, openly hostile and yet has occasional moments of self-awareness, in part brought on by Peanut Butter's unrelenting acceptance of him. I love that we never see Jeremy's full acceptance of the friendship, but there are a lot of clues that he's heading in that direction. Meanwhile, Peanut Butter, in small ways, is learning how to stick up for himself more and Jeremy's partly to blame for that, however an unwitting participant he may be in the process. It is so incredible rare for a book that is clearly directed at a younger audience to not be even a little patronizing, and PB & Jeremy's Best Book Ever does it so very well. Children know exactly what's going on; they've experience relationships like PB & J's and they have also shown kindness and acceptance to people who have taken advantage of them. To some degree it is a child's second nature to give multiple chances to others. It's when we've been burned enough times that we get jaded and start to close off more.
In general, Kochalka is pretty good at inserting more uncertainty than the norm in children's literature.

This is the hilarious story of a cat named Peanutbutter and a crow named Jeremy, who is always trying to steal Peanutbutter's hats. The artwork is simple, but that makes it all the more hilarious. I want to buy this one for my very own.

  • Kelly

I mean, you can't go wrong with a cat who wants to be the best office employee in the world who crosses paths with an asshole crow who just wants to trick him.

  • Laura

Some of it was cute, mostly Peanutbutter, but overall I really didn't enjoy it. Jeremy is just so mean all the time and he doesn't add anything to the story but being cruel and stealing Peanutbutter's hats.

This is one of my all time favorite comic books next to Calvin and Hobbes, What's Michael and Sgt. Frog. I wish the author had made this into a full series.

  • Michael

    Fun.

  • Matthew Metzdorf

This is the cutest and most delightful comic I've read in a long time

Peanut Butter and Jeremy’s Best Book Ever is a whimsical collection of the adventures of a naive workaholic cat (who thinks he is an office employee) named Peanutbutter and a sarcastic trickster crow named Jeremy. Peanutbutter, who takes himself much too seriously, needs a nemesis-pal like Jeremy around to bring him back down to earth. Character development here is excellent – the two epitomize their species and display charmingly human affectations as well. The art is smooth, featuring simple lines and velvety black backgrounds.

Appropriate for children in that the themes, dialogue and artwork are easily comprehended, some of the plots and jokes may go over their heads. Saavy teens and collegiate intern-types will probably get the most out of Peanutbutter’s career track and Jeremy’s meanness. Some parents of young children may object to the name-calling and threats of violence throughout, but they are true to Jeremy’s character and should be taken lightly.

Looking for graphic novels to put in the juvenile section? Here’s one that is a lot of fun and is appropriate for younger kids! Peanutbutter is a cat with a job—she often “works” at filing papers, sorting accounts and general office management for her “boss.” Jeremy is a crow who lives outside Peanutbutter’s house...er...”office”—he’s mean and crude, but Peanutbutter calls him her best friend. Both are typical representations of the creatures they portray, but they also have their own personalities. The book is divided into several short stories, with Peanutbutter and Jeremy introducing each one. The black and white drawings are simple and expressive, and the text is easy to read and page design is easy to follow. Recommended especially for cat lovers!

So I was working the children's room when I came across this book-- a graphic novel about the love-hate relationship between Peanut Butter, a sweet house cat with a penchant for paperwork and hats, and a mean spirited crow named Jeremy who terrorizes the cat. It's got that Saturday morning cartoony vibe except the parts with the crow and the gun are just downright disturbing. But I didn't stop reading it--- it had some really funny parts, and some good morals (see the birthday one)and is perfect for the reluctant reader.

my friend bill gave me this for my birthday a while back. it's about Peanut Butter the cat, who "works" in his person's office, and his friend Jeremy the crow, who has a slight mean streak. gimme a book with a talking cat and i'm all over it. i have a big giant crush on James Kochalka, ever since Monkey Vs Robot.

  • Jill

Fun graphic novel, I guess. I just couldn't get over the stinky attitude of that crow, man he made me grumpy! Uhg! Great book to get reluctant readers into, though. It is a quick and simple read. The humor is fun, the cat is super cute and charming, but that crow just keeps taking advantage of a good friend!! At the least it can be a good lead in to what makes a good friend :)

  • Erica

The cat named Peanutbutter thinks he is working in an office, helping process or file accounts, when he is napping on the top of a pile of papers - and sometimes scattering them around the house. The crow named Jeremy is mean and self-centered and annoying. Not much happens, but it's possible cat-lovers or people who like Dilbert will also like this.

  • Wallace

Kochalka's humor tends to be crude, but in these story he managed to stay cute and lovable throughout. Simple short stories of a typically dysfunctional cartoon cat/bird relationship. A certain straightforward integrity.

  • Emilia P

    Very cute.
A nice sprinkling of semi-made up words.and acronyms.

It reminds me of when Aurora makes me read things about a grumpy animal and a patient animal who are friends anyway.
It's sort of a literary trope.

  • Sri

  • Anne

Unlikely pairing of a bird and cat being friends. But the worst part is that the bird constantly tricks the cat and calls it names, but the cat never stands up for itself. Illustrations overly simple and do not add to the quality of the book.

  • Earline

    James Kochalka is amazing.
I loved Jeremy, he is so hardcore.. especially when he had a gun. Peanutbutter is cute and reminds me of Spandy but with cool hats and ties. Also, I think the pairing of the adorable kitten and the badass crow is pretty brilliant... with hilarious results.

  • Erika Barrington

So easy and fun for me. I needed that because I'm having some books that I'm dragging through. And I discovered accidentally that its *kinda* ok to read with 4 year olds :) ... besides the gun parts? ("he's meeean!")

  • Katharine

My 7-year old loves to blow up hoards of zombies with his dad in video games. He loves nerf guns and how weapons work. But he hated that this crow was so mean and continually threatening the cat with a gun. We didn't finish.

  • Joey

Cute, funny, and relatively accessible for all ages.
Well, at one point Jeremy almost shoots Peanut Butter in the head with a gun. I found that pretty funny. But most of the humor is very tame and suitable for kids.

  • Roman Kramer

I enjoyed this book and it reminds me of Simon the Cat because you have the same cat vs someone thing. This adds a unique twist to that idea and also made it more intersting because it added he cats veiw of people and he crow.

  • sarah

a sweetly imagined friendship between a cynical, exploitative crow and an earnest catnapper. simple illustrations with details worth noticing.
