First Impressions
Possessed by the Highlander was one of those random picks that I just wanted as I was browsing my library digital catalog and they have such a fun mix of historicals. Terri Brisbin is an author that I have really enjoyed in the past and I found that I had so much fun with this one here. The writing was a bit different than I had expected from it so it took some getting used to at times, but I really loved the way that this author wrote the plot and the way that the romance is developed, there is a sense of mystery all the way through the story that will really pull you further into the story ad keep you invested into it. It’s a very solid romance even if it’s not going to make the top lists for you.
He was a confusing, complicated man—one who deserved better than to be dragged into the middle of this family debacle and one who it would take years to know fully. Years she did not want and did not have.
Summary
Duncan has come to negotiate a truth with clans and is known as the “peacemaker” and then he meets the lovely Marian Robertson who is being attacked by a man and defends her and finds himself being charmed by Marian and her charming little girl that is in love with Duncan and forms a quick bond with him. But through a set or events, where they are compromised, and in order to keep the peace treaty, Duncan and Marian agree to handfasting. Even though Duncan is ready to marry her, Marian is determined to protect Duncan and insists on a handfasting. When he takes Marian and her child with him they discover something more between them. But there is a past that Duncan needs to uncover because Marian is so fearful of what would happen if the truth would be revealed, but through a steadfast love, Duncan will show Marian he is worthy of her secrets and her heart…

What I Loved
I had so much fun with this book and it just really pulled me into the story fairly quickly, especially with all the mystery that surrounds our heroine. I was so curious to see why she was rumored to be the “whore” of the clan, and why she let it happen, of the truths about her and her daughter, and why her brother would work a situation to bring Marian ad Duncan together. I really loved how authentic feeling this book is without a huge overload of historical information being delivered. I was also really fascinated by the handfasting type of the plot and seeing how they would work in the end for them to find their HEA. Duncan was such a determined honest hero, I just loved how devoted and kind he is to Marian and genuine in his feelings for her, Marian is living in fear, but we don’t quite know the details for a while and slowly it’s built into the climax of the story. We also see the fun bond between Duncan and his family and it just made me want to read more books in the series. This was a quick read though one where I didn’t know how much I was reading until I got to 90% and I was shocked by how well I was into it and how easily its read. The romance has an unrequited feeling to it because of how guarded Marian is and I love a pining hero who is trying to build trust with her, Seeing how tenacious he is to prove himself to Marian was beyond charming and I really enjoyed that aspect. This story was such a roundabout solid win.
That’s what I want in my husband, Duncan. I want a man who will choose me above all else
What I Struggled With
I really had a struggle with our heroine, the way she keeps things from Duncan was too drawn out and could be really frustrating and it was like this all the way through the book.

4 ⭐️ para Duncan y Marian.
ARGUMENTO:
Conocemos a Duncan, emisario del clan MacLeid (creo que era así, en serio no me toméis en cuenta si los nombres están mal escritos o no los recuerdo, los nombres son algo que se me olvida siempre 😂), que acude a la casa de los Robertson para pactar una alianza de ambos pueblos. Iain, el ahora jefe del clan de los Robertson, se lo está poniendo difícil a Duncan, un hombre apodado el Pacificador. Pero hay algo que calma a Duncan, una mujer llamada Mará que conoció el primer día que llegó allí. Es una mujer que vive en el bosque con su pequeña hija de 5 años. Durante la estancia allí, Duncan no puede dejar de visitarlas e intentar hacerlas sonreír, pero pronto se verá inmerso en una trama de mentiras y engañosa por parte del clan de los Robertson.
He sufrido, de verdad, no al borde de las lágrimas pero Marian me ha dado mucha pena. Eso es una mujer luchadora que se merece que todo el mundo se postre a sus pies y se los bese, e Iaran debería agradecerle el resto de su vida lo que ha hecho por él.
La historia ha sido estupenda, de hecho, conforme iba leyendo me sorprendí de que, o la historia es corta, o yo leía tan rápido que avanzaba en el libro de manera casi supersónica 😂. Me encantó Tavis haciéndole animalitos de madera a Ciara, me encantó Connor y Jocelyn, y me encantó como Marian se ganó el respeto de todos en casa de los MacCallum. Necesitaba una historia así de buena porque últimamente elegí muy mal mis lecturas.
Mi único fallo para no darle las 5 estrellas es que al final, en el momento de explicar todo el secreto, se enredó todo un poco y quizá fue expuesto de forma muy rápida. El final llegó demasiado pronto para mí y el epílogo se me hizo escaso, por lo demás, recomiendo la historia sin duda 😃 -
It was just ok. I didn't like the heroine's "secret" and how the whole situation turned out. The hero kept asking her to trust him and she kept saying it wasn't her secret to tell.
The hero did stand up for her and tell everyone in his clan that if anyone insulted her or called her a whore they would have him to answer to. So I liked that.

To hide this, her father and brother told her she had to protect the clan. So they pretended it was her having the orgy with 3 guys and sent her away with the wife of the brother's bastard daughter. (Brother's wife had an affair with her cousin) So hero eventually lies and says his wife was not a virgin on their wedding night to protect her adopted daughter and her clan. (Brother's wife's family had a cousin on his deathbed who confessed to having sex with the brother's wife, so they wanted the wife's daughter (heroine's adopted daughter she told everyone was hers) to go home with them) Talk about drama. -

I have to admit that when this book arrived in the mail and I realised it was a "Mills and Boon" book, I promptly put it to the back of the cupboard and forgot about it, because I don't read those so called "trashy romances".
Well after a bout of an illness and lying around feeling quite miserable decided I wanted something quick and easy to read that I didn't have to think too much about.
I'm so glad that I did.....because I really enjoyed the story of Duncan and Marian, so much so that I couldn't put it down.
It isn't full of politics nor history of Scotland and is really just a quick and easy to read romance. -
Im pretty sure I liked the first book more though I probably had higher expectations from this one.

If Goodreads allowed for half stars I would probably give this a 2.5 because there were a few things I liked about it. But first things first, the grammar was atrocious. Perhaps, being a literature and writing professor, I am more sensitive to it, but it really started to frustrate me after a while. I feel like the author uses the word "ken" way too much. Yes, I know it's a Scottish word, but when I see it three times in one sentence I'm over it. The story also relies heavily on a trope that I have seen a little too often- I will refrain from giving spoilers, but suffice it to say it's an unrealistic situation and also creates this ideal heroine who as a character is also unrealistic and I don't know why authors keep using this trope. To be fair, this book was written about twelve years ago, so maybe it was fresh then, but I doubt it. I did feel like the big reveal in the book was good; it wasn't something I completely guessed and it provided a good amount of tension and a real choice for the hero. I also felt like the relationship between the hero and heroine was well developed. It wasn't quite the slow burn that I prefer, but it was much better done than in a lot of romance novels I have read. This book wasn't entirely my cup of tea, but it was better than some of the others like it that I have read, so if grammar issues and overdone tropes don't bother you then you may like it.

they really could have hidden those men and had everything sorted out without having to sacrifice the heroine. it was very stupid but whatever. -
Rage inducing and a complete waste of time. The ending was stupid and horrible! I was waiting the whole time for the heroine to be vindicated and the truth come out and everyone knowing she was not a harlot! And so it's not okay for Marian's friend to be disgraced, but for Marian, who is innocent, to be? And Iain (oh gosh, hate him!) gets off practically scot-free with his sister still taking the fall. This author, well, I hate her, and will be avoiding her like the plague!

Me encantó la historia. Duncan es único, no le importa lo que digan los demás, no le importa el pasado de ella, la adora a ella y a la nena como si fuera su propia hija.
Ella es increíble todo lo que aguanta por proteger a la nena, por seguir junto a ella.
Me encantó y me sorprendió el final el porque de tantos secretos, no me lo esperaba. -
I loved the first 15 chapters of this book. The ending was okay - kind of typical "I'm keeping a secret that can destroy my family but I really need to tell you because I love you but I can't tell you because I don't want to destroy my family."
Definitely worth the read. -

I said it before and I’ll say it again, “I am so glad I was not a woman in medieval times!” or any other time period for that matter because of the way women were treated until the latter years of the 20th century.
Marian Robertson is known as the “Robertson Harlot” by her clan and her story is known and has been adapted and enhanced upon all over the Highlands. She was the escape goat for her father and brother when something went terribly wrong and she has lived as an outcast for five years with her daughter. She moved away until her father passed away two years ago, and then moved back on the outskirts of the village, telling people she is a widow named Mara and hoping nobody recognizes her. Her older brother who is now the laird and her two younger brothers are the only ones who know who she really is but they don’t even speak to her.
Duncan MacLerie works for his cousin, the Earl of Douran, as the clan negotiator. He negotiates contracts between his clan and other clans to build allies and strengthen his clan. He is known as the Peacemaker because he works well with others and always does the right and noble thing. Because of this, he is an easy target for when negotiating a contract with the Robertson Clan. When Iain Robertson, Marian’s brother who is the clan chief, notices that Duncan is attracted to his sister, he drugs Duncan and then claims he dishonored his sister and forces Duncan to marry her.
Duncan had no clue that Marion was the “Robertson Harlot” when he met her and she never said anything because they just had a few short encounters and Marion had put a stop to it because she was afraid of causing trouble for the clan or of being noticed. To not cause problems for his clan, he agrees to marry Marion.
Marion begs her brother not to force a good man like Duncan to marry her but when her brother refuses to back out, she gets him to agree to a handfesting instead, a trial marriage that lasts a year and one day and at the end of it, the couple can go their separate ways if they wish. She knows what her reputation is and would hate to ruin Duncan’s life with an actual marriage. She plans to move far away when the year is over.
When Duncan beds Marion on the night of their handfesting ceremony, he discovers that she is a virgin. Now he has all kinds of questions. How can she be a harlot if she is a virgin? How can she have a daughter if she is a virgin? Whose child is she? What are the Robertson’s covering up that is so awful as to make everyone believe that Marion is a harlot? How could the Robertson’s treat their daughter and sister so horribly? He tries to get answers out of Marion but she refuses to tell him because she doesn’t know him well enough to tell him the truth.
Duncan takes Marion and her daughter, Ciara, back with him to his clan who treat her better than her clan did after the night so many years ago. Although, she is starting to fall in love with Duncan, she thinks he deserves better than her. Duncan believes that Marion doesn’t want the marriage and will leave after the year is older so when has sex with her, he uses the pullout method to prevent pregnancy. This makes Marion think that he doesn’t want to make any mistakes so she can leave at the end of the year.
I felt so bad for Marion because her father chose her brother over her because men were thought to be so much more important than women back then. The only thing daughters were good for were to make marriage alliances with other clans. She had lived in poverty for five years even though her father could have set her up with a better life since she was covering up a secret for her father and brother but he chose not to and even after he died, her brother didn’t offer assistance. She also had to put up with people mistreating her because they thought she was a harlot. Even Rurik almost said the word, “whore” to Duncan while talking to him once which bugged me since Rurik married a woman who was pregnant with someone else’s child. If he wouldn’t have married her, she would have been known as a harlot so I didn’t get why Rurik would judge unless he knew and he was just trying to goad Duncan into telling the truth about Marion. Marion put up with a lot to protect the ones she loved and to keep her secrets.
Ciara was adorable. I especially liked the way she had a crush on Tavis, one of the MacLerie guardsmen who carved wooden horses and animals for her. She told her mom she was going to marry him. Hmmm, perhaps a future book?
I’m really into this series and its characters. Of course, I have already downloaded the next book.

Gostei imenso deste livro. Achei-o mais romântico que os anteriores. De forma geral consegui descobrir o segredo de Marian muito cedo, mas não toda a verdade. Fiquei surpreendida com alguns aspectos referentes a esse segredo. Também fiquei chocada e indignada ao saber tudo o que a própria família a fez passar. Achei o casal perfeito um para o outro, e gostei imenso do final.
Dos três que já li, este é o meu preferido. -
I really loved the Hero, Duncan MacLerie the Peascemaker for the MacLerie clan. He is an extremely respected all over the country for his negotiating skills for the MacLerie clan. His character who was a strong, honest, loyal and fearless warrior was also a sensitive loving man. This can only be accomplished by a very talented writer. Duncan felt very real to me and not a fictional character in a book.
When riding to the Robertson's clans strong hold to negotiate a truce between the MacLerie and Robertson's clans our dark-eyed warrior sees a lovely woman tending her garden while laughing with a small blond haired child. This quiet and peaceful setting makes our hero, Duncan, long for a home, wife and child and a patch of land to farm of his own. He longs for this to the very depth of his soul while acknowledging that his reputation as the chief Peacemaker of the MacLerie clan would make the men who know him laugh at his secret desires. During the many breaks from his sometimes tense negotiations with the Robertson's laird he is compelled to visit that small cottage and watch from a hill top this pretty maid with her child tolling in the garden while laughing and singing songs. When he is spotted watching them, our heroine, Marian whispers to her daughter go into the cottage and stay there until the stranger leaves. But the child is drawn by the smiles of this gentle warrior and his huge black horse which she becomes fascinated with. Marian Robertson rescued a child which destroyed her reputation and labeled her across the country as the "Robertson's Whore" . Now, to keep her family safe she keeps a secret that could destroy her entire clan.
I strongly recommend this wonderful story. The sensual level is a satisfying 7, no sex before marriage, but believe me you will be very satisfied with the passion before marriage between this couple. A wonderful story by a talented author with rememberable loveable characters. clearly a 4 1/2 star read. -
Marian Robertson has been shunned by her clan, known as the Robertson Harlot, she is the younger sister of the clan's laird. She lives with her daughter on the outskirts of town, where she runs into Duncan MacLerie, the MacLerie clan's peacemaker. He's visiting to establish a treaty between the MacLerie's and the Robertsons and takes an instant liking to Marian and her daughter - but he is completely unaware of who she is. But when they are caught in a compromising position by the laird, he insists that Duncan marry his sister. Duncan will do anything for the good of his clan and preferring not to anger the Robertson laird and keep their treaties, he allows himself to be forced into marriage. Only to discover that Marian isn't who everyone thinks she is and that she is full of secrets that she is unwilling to share, even with the man she has come to love.
Marian was a bit of a doormat, I thought. She was resistant in some ways, but people that she should have been rightfully angry with, namely her brother, she was way too forgiving towards. I just couldn't fathom why she would feel she owed him loyalty after everything she suffered through for him. And then him forcing her into marriage - that would have been the last straw for me. But she never really got angry at him. Duncan was a unique hero, in that he wasn't that gruff, testerone led, reactionary male. He thought things out, weighed pros and cons and was able to set aside his pride to do what was ultimately in his clans best interest. Not exactly a beta hero, but definitely not your typical alpha. I liked him quite a bit and could totally sympathize with his frustration with his wife. Her complete unwillingness to trust Duncan irritated the crap out of me.
This was a relatively quick read and a decent continuation of the series, but nothing super exciting. -
This was definitely my favourite of the first three books in this series. It was a very cute story with strong characters and an interesting plot.
Normally I am not a fan of love at first sight books but I didn't mind that element in this one. I felt like both characters didn't have just, a physical attraction to each other and that they made an effort to know each other.
Duncan is such a sweetheart of a character and I really liked Mariam's character too. It was nice to see past characters and see where their lives have gone. I liked the mystery behind Marian's exile and didn't find it very predictable.
I found with my copy (eBook) it was hard to keep track of the prespective because there was no paragraph break but I think I have just become accustomed to that type of formatting. I also found that this book didn't have too many things that were "lost in translation" like with previous books.
For those who are looking for a quick and cute highlander read, this book will meet all your needs.
