1874, Priscilla Hutchens has just received word that her brother and sister-in-law, have been killed and that their two seven-year-old twins, Teresa (Tessa), and Timothy, have been left orphaned.
She decides that the children will need to come and live with her in Cincinnati, Ohio, so she sets off on the long journey to Fort Bliss army barracks, Texas, where the children are currently are living.
On arrival Priscilla causes a bit of a stir with the soldiers, with her good looks and expensive clothes. All except for one man, Major Elliot Ryder, the army doctor, who knows exactly what kind of influence a woman like her can cause.
It soon becomes clear that Major Ryder is in fact the uncle of the children and has been looking after them, treating them like mini soldiers, something Priscilla detests as she is not a fan of the army. He is also not about to hand the children over to some stranger, given that neither him, nor the twins, have ever seen her before.
Between the two of them they need to come to some agreement about the care of the children, but neither is willing to budge. Who will win this battle of wills?
My Heart Belongs in Fort Bliss, Texas, is a clean, sweet tale set amidst a real time in American history, and in a real place.
Priscilla is one feisty woman! She may have the voice and the dress of a posh lady, but she certainly is no pushover. She has pure stamina and determination, and is used to getting what she wants. She doesn’t take too kindly to Major Ryder’s upbringing of the twins, nor does she like Fort Bliss.
Major Ryder, is also a man with determination and used to what he says, goes. He isn’t about to let a woman come into the children’s life and take them away from him, the only family he now has left after the death of his sister.
The two characters are both very likeable and I could understand where both of them were coming from. They both had the children’s best interests at heart, and I was hoping for some joint resolution.
The book had a lovely pace to it. There were no fast-paced, gripping, heart-pounding scenes, but there was plenty enough going on to keep me hooked to the pages. Ms Vetsch has a knack for making you feel like you have travelled back in time, and are witnessing the events firsthand.
If you are looking for a short, easy, historical read, then this book would be perfect.

Erica Vetsch is an author not to miss. She has done it again, penning a gripping historical romance that grabs your attention right from the start of the book and doesn't let go even after it's finished. This author has really done her research, with vivid historical descriptions you could imagine yourself in Fort Bliss,Texas. I love the idea a of new series of historical romances created for readers who love historical destinations. I want to read many more books in this series. I know the stories will captivate you as they have done with me. Highly recommended to lovers of Historical Romance.

I love to read historical romance books. The author did a wonderful job of taking me back to 1874 to Texas after the civil war. I felt like I was there observing what was going on during that time period. The heroine, Priscilla was from Cincinnati and traveled to Fort Bliss to bring home her twin niece and nephew after the death of their parents. She had no idea that they had an uncle on their mother's side who was already taking care of them. Major Ryder had no inclination whatsoever of ever letting the twins go back east with Priscilla. She was a headstrong beauty. He was a stalwart and handsome Army Doctor. The sparks fly and yet even though they disagree about the twins, there is an undercurrent of attraction between the two. I really enjoyed seeing it all played out until the very end.

This was such an enjoyable story and a fun peek back into history. Elliot and Priscilla were both easy characters to like. Even though they each thought that they knew what would be best for the orphaned twins, it was the journey of watching their hearts grow toward each other that was very special in this story. The twins, Tessa and Timothy, were also great characters and very nicely written.
My Heart Belongs in Fort Bliss, Texas: Priscilla’s Reveille was filled with romance, danger, and many obstacles for the characters to overcome. I enjoyed this trip back in time!

Because my son is stationed in Fort Bliss, and because I was just there this winter, I picked this book up, and I'm glad I did.
Very good story of Priscilla, a fashion catalog illustrator, traveling across the country to claim her brother's twins who were left orphans at Fort Bliss when their parents died of fevers. Priscilla has a tremendous grudge against the Army, and with good reason. Her father, an Army officer, died while on patrol in a blizzard, leaving her mother to raise two children on a reduced pension. Now, having to bear being on another Army base to claim her niece and nephew, the old resentments came forward.
“I know it [the Army] took my father and brother from me. I know that the army cares nothing for the families of the officers and enlisted men. But I care. I care about those children.”....
“Oh, I’m not bitter. But I’m not stupid either. Knowing what I know about how the army treats families, I would be a fool to put myself in that position, or to allow those I love to be put in that position either. That’s why I know it is in the best interest of the children to remove them. A military man will always choose his career over his family, and I never want to be second in my husband’s heart.”
But the children's uncle, the base doctor, will stop at nothing to keep this woman from taking his sister's children from him.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Not hokey or eye-rolly at all. The serious antagonism between the two main characters from the start was fun. Plus the hard won love was also well done. A surprise interaction between a few characters and the determined Indian who wanted Priscilla for himself made for great reading.

This is an enjoyable Western novel about a young woman who goes to Texas to claim her niece and nephew after her brother and sister-in-law die. Her mother had been an embittered military widow, and Priscilla wants nothing to do with the military...not even with the good-looking doctor who just happens to be the children's uncle, and who's determined to keep her from taking the children away from everything they've ever known. I enjoyed the story and read it in a day easily.

I really enjoyed this gentle romance set in the heart of Texas during a very volatile time with the surrounding Indians. The author did a great job of painting a clear picture of the setting and the people for my mind.
Priscilla and Elliot are at odds. Both are determined to have custody of their young niece and nephew. Priscilla wants to take them away from the awful Fort they have been living at and Elliot is determined to keep the kids right where they are because it's all they have ever known. Fortunately, both Priscilla and Elliot are good people trying to do good things so things never get mean or nasty- but there are definitely some tense moments with their tenuous relationship.
I really enjoyed the setting and how the author was able to weave so many characters and situations into the story to make me feel like I was sitting right there, watching it all play out. It reminded me of a Hallmark movie- especially with the children playing such a large role in the book. It's a slow and gentle romance and I thought it was great!
I didn't realize when I started reading that this book is part of a series being released- each book by a different author so I'm going to have to keep my eyes on that! :)

And there is no need to worry you won't be blushing as you read.

This book looks at life in Texas, living on a Fort near El Paso and the many interactions(good and negative) with the Native Americans living close by at the time. I enjoyed reading about the lives of Cavalry wives and the women who chose to live their lives with the constant changes and many unknowns. It was also interesting reading about the interactions with the Native Americans, the medicinal remedies used during that time and I can't forget the love story.
Priscilla finds herself heading to Fort Bliss, Texas to take over care of her twin niece and nephew. Her brother and his wife have recently passed away leaving the two orphaned. She takes a leave from her work, packs up and plans to make a quick trip there and back, only staying long enough to gather Tessa and Timothy's belongings. Priscilla makes no secret of her disdain for the army and cavalry. Her father and now her brother have both given and lost their lives to serving and she is not going to get sucked into such a life ever again.
What Priscilla doesn't expect is to find that her sister in law had a brother. Major Elliot is the Doctor for the cavalry and has taken over care of Tessa and Timothy. He refuses to let them leave with Priscilla and she refuses to leave them when she heads back to Cincinnati. Quite the quandary they find themselves in and no easy solution in sight.
Priscilla is put to the test living life in a dusty fort, with very little refinement, no school to educate her little wards, confinement when the Indians come around, an obstinate man who is so frustrating, being forced and needed to perform dangerous medical procedures, friend's lives at constant risk and utter exhaustion. Can Priscilla find a way to convince Major Elliot that a Fort is no place to raise children. She mustn't stare too long at his eyes or she just might find herself falling into his trap and being stuck in the Fort is no option. Now how to get Major Elliot to agree to take the children and care for them, the sooner the better...or maybe not.
Major Elliot knew this woman would be trouble from the start. But he knows one thing for sure, his sister gave him charge to raise the twins in the army lifestyle and that is just what he plans to do. Never mind that they run around free and wild when he is unable to supervise. Never mind that Priscilla is able to keep them groomed and feed and interested in learning. Never mind that she's one of the best horsewoman he's ever seen and don't tell anyone, one of the most beautiful women too. He must steel his heart and make sure she doesn't have any chance of touching it. He's learned his lesson where women are concerned and it just goes to show that Priscilla is right, she's not meant to be at the Fort. Now how to get her to leave, the sooner the better....or maybe not.
It was a sweet romance but not a fast paced one. It took time for these two to realize what they really wanted. There's tragedy and a moment of terror(maybe not the best word but it sounded better than scared), horseback riding, Indian traditions, a medicine man, an obsessed Indian, a rude and disdainful matron, a new baby, gunshots, dances, beautiful dresses, long stares and some other fun surprises. I enjoyed the pacing of the story and the characters. I think the author did a good job in developing them in a manner that as a reader I could connect with them. Even with Priscilla's attitude I really liked her. She has a lot to learn. As does Major Elliot.
Content: A few mild Indian attacks, broken leg being set, a clean sweet romance, mild Christian religious aspects(not overly preachy, I enjoyed how it was done-the characters would have thoughts or little prayers in moments of peril or soul searching). I would say it's a clean read and would recommend for YA and up.

Erica Vetsch can always be counted on to deliver great historical fiction – rich in fascinating history, swoony romance, vivid characters, and some sass and humor thrown in for good measure. My Heart Belongs in Fort Bliss Texas: Priscilla’s Reveille did not disappoint.
Combining frontier medicine (with a hunky doctor at the helm) with the rigors and tensions of a military fort is riveting enough. But then you add in a fashion conscious lady and two adorable twins at the center of a custody battle between East and West, and you have the recipe for a fantastic read.
I especially enjoyed the romance (of course) but the twins are all kinds of adorable. Tessa and Timothy steal your heart from their very first scene and take up permanent residence before much longer. A bevy of secondary and tertiary characters prove to be just as entertaining and dimensional, and I’d love to see more books about any number of them.
And the humor!!!! Oh my heart. Several scenes in Fort Bliss made me laugh out loud, while others had me giggling into the pages. It endears you to the characters and the story all the more and really rounds out the plot nicely. There are lots of tender moments in this book too… and some harrowing scenes … and some emotional ones … but the humor ties them all together in a way that leaves you smiling in spite of the occasional sadness.
As Vetsch is an admitted history geek, her novels always come meticulously researched and the history is worked seamlessly into the story. I learn so much from her books without feeling like I’ve been reading a textbook … but they often make me want to do even more research when I’m done reading. That’s the history geek in me talking, too, by the way.
Bottom Line: You can never go wrong with an Erica Vetsch book, and My Heart Belongs in Fort Bliss Texas: Priscilla’s Reveille is a prime example of why you should be a fan if you’re not already. Humor, history, and heart weave together with a captivating plot and a sweet (and also convicting) message of faith. Characters with whom you’ll fall in love, a setting you experience vicariously, and a reminder to trust God in all things … plus some fantastic chemistry and adorable children. It doesn’t get much better!

Once in a while, I find myself reading a book by a favorite author that just doesn't fulfill that author's usual quality of writing. My Heart Belongs in Fort Bliss, Texas, is just one of those books. Erica Vetsch writes with a deft hand and I've read many of her novellas and enjoyed every single word. This one dragged from the very beginning and never let up.
Amazon's synopsis of the book states:
Introducing a new series of historical romances created for readers who love historical destinations. Journey to Fort Bliss, Texas, where a battle of emotions versus ideals is about to be waged. When a high-steppin’ eastern fashion artist, Priscilla Hutchens, swoops down on the fort to gain custody of her twin niece and nephew she is met with resistance by their uncle, post surgeon Major Elliot Ryder, who thinks he knows what is best for them. There are a few twists in the plot, but I didn't find them all that compelling. This is a matter of tasted, and I am in no way abandoning Erica as a favorite author. This book is just a miss--FOR ME.

I really enjoyed this latest full length from Erica Vetsch. I always love her full lengths and she didn't disappoint. If you're a fan of traditional historical romances with humor and authentic western wit and sass, you will enjoy Fort Bliss and all Priscilla and Elliot have to offer. Not to mention, the last line in the book is probably the best of the entire novel! Perfect for winter read. Don't wait. Soft romance, clean, inspirational, filled with authentic US Calvary history and Victorian medical facts. Loved it.

Sweet romance between Priscilla Hutchens that abhors the military and Major Elliot Rhyder that believes in the value of military. They are brought together in arid Fort Bless following the death of Elliot's sister and Priscilla's brother. Priscilla travels from Cincinnati to collect the niece and nephew she's never met and return them to "civilization". It was great to see how her opinion of Fort Bliss and military life changed over time.

Take a grieving aunt who thinks she knows what’s best for her orphaned niece and nephew and an equally grieving uncle who is well established at caring for the children and you have a serious conflict. Independent Aunt Pricilla has come to take the twins back to Cincinnati with her, but Tess and Tim are already in the custody of their Uncle Elliot Ryder, the post surgeon.
Pricilla Hutchens is not at all suited to Army life, having experienced it as a child. She thinks the best place for her brother’s children is back in civilization. Elliot has other ideas and wants to honor his dying sister’s wishes.
This story had a great conflict going and it played out well. The portayal of the twins was very realistic and cute. From the description of the fort and the characters, I couldn’t help but think back to an old 1940 movie that starred Errol Flynn. I could see Elliot as being as suave and military-like.
I would recommend this book to those who liked the old black and white westerns. It is a realistic but fun book. I have enjoyed this series from Barbour.

Great historical fiction! This story made me feel like I was really at Fort Bliss in 1874.
Priscilla Hutchens takes leave from her job as artist for the Carterson Ladies' Emporium Catalog in Cincinnati, Ohio to go to Fort Bliss in Texas. The book description tells you what she finds when she gets there so I won't repeat it. I will tell you that Priscilla detests Army life. Army first, always. Her father died while out on patrol her mother became estranged from her son, Priscilla’s only sibling when he joined the army. Priscilla has no intention of staying more than a few days to retrieve the twins. But those days turn into weeks and her heart begins to change toward their uncle. She is stronger than Major Dr. Elliot Ryder ever thought she would be. The author does an amazing job of describing normal every day life in the Fort. There is some action with local and other Indian Tribes. There is also drama at the Fort but humorous moments are woven into the story very nicely too. It is the romance that slowly develops between Priscilla and Elliot and what was going to happen to the twins that kept my attention.
I loved this book from the first line to the last.

This is not my first foray into books of this nature, but this is my first time with this particular author. I'll admit, I was a bit hesitant to start this series, and this was not a good introduction for me overall.
I truly hated Priscilla as a heroine! She had so many assumptions when she first arrived at Fort Bliss, and was so certain she knew what was best for her niece and nephew, despite the fact that she was almost a perfect stranger to them! Watching her attitudes change was akin to pulling teeth, that's how much her beginnings colored the book for me.
Elliot was trying to do the best he could with the children in a less than ideal circumstance, but it seemed like he was just as rigid and condescending as Priscilla herself! I get that this was to create tension in the book, but I found their verbal sparring boring and uninspired.
I did like the characterization of the secondary characters in the book, and the descriptions of Army Fort life during that time period, so the book earned an extra star because of them. While the series is off to a rocky start, I am willing to continue with it, as the subsequent books are written by different authors. I just know I'll be avoiding this one in the future. -
"My Heart Belongs in Fort Bliss, Texas" is a Christian romance set in 1874 in Texas. Priscilla and Elliot are well suited to each other in temperament and interests, but they strongly disagree on what's best for the orphaned niece and nephew. Priscilla is certain that a civilized, city upbringing is best for them, but Elliot refuses to let her take the twins from his care or leave his life in the army.
Priscilla stays a while, hoping to change Elliot's mind. She grew up moving from posting to posting until her army father died, and she's certain she never wants that life again. But she finds some redeeming aspects as she views army life as an adult. They have some interesting and exciting adventures on the Texas frontier, and we get a look at what life was like at the time.
There was no sex or bad language. Overall, I'd recommend this enjoyable historical romance. -
A very pleasant read.
I've only read one other book by Erica Vetsch, so she is still basically a new-to-me author. This book was very well written, keeping my attention with great characters. I don't usually read books based in a western setting, but this was very good. I highly recommend it. I look forward to reading more of Erica's books.

What a fun and enjoyable story! Erica Vetsch has written a charming and delightful novel in My Heart Belongs in Fort Bliss, Texas: Priscilla’s Reveille. Readers will love the energetic and spunky main character, Priscilla. She may like her fashion and fancy clothes, but when it comes down to it she is a determined and hardworking family centered woman. Readers will enjoy the family focus and theme in the story. Vetsch also includes details about the army, which readers will enjoy learning about. This charming story will capture the attention of readers from the beginning, all the way until the very last page. It is an engaging and enjoyable novel that readers will not want to miss.

A wonderful heart warming story. I loved how the whole of Fort Bliss worked together to surround the two orphaned children. The contrast between the army doctor uncle and fashion artist aunt really carried the story and helped paint the picture of daily life at a remote Texas fort. I enjoyed the subtle lessons woven throughout the story of strength of character and the roles people play in everyday life. I especially liked how unsung heroes tended to step forward and save the day and were never who you thought they would be. A fun historical romance and a good read.

I really enjoyed this historical novel of life on a military post in 1874. Erica Vetsch did a great job with the research and made you feel like you were a part of this story. Priscilla is a strong willed, self sufficient woman who locks horns with Elliot who is a strong willed but tender military surgeon. They both want the best for the niece and nephew they have in common, but deny the growing feelings between them. The children grip your heart and you want to give them a hug for the sorrow they have endured. This is a book that has adventure, romance, growth of characters, and historical facts. Another well written and fast paced tale from a talented author. You won't want to put it down.

What a wonderful story that not only keeps your attention but you become so invested in it that you forget what time it is. I almost read this in one setting and sure didn’t want to put it down. The author pulls on your heartstrings from the delightful children who have just lost their parents to the aunt and uncle who both want to raise them. The author fills the pages with danger, Indians, death, wonderful characters you will just love and one you will not be too crazy about. There is always one in the group that is a sour face that takes the fun out of everything. This is a wonderful fun, sorrow, bright, clean and a very surprising delightful read that really keeps the reader invested not only in the story but the characters.
Fort Bliss is along the San Antonio-El Paso Trail in Texas Priscilla finds no bliss in this small fort where she finds her niece and nephew running wild with little or no adult supervision. Being the only living relative she is planning on taking the children home with her to rise. This starts off pretty fast when something happens to put her face to face with the doctor of the fort neither are but aren’t impressed with the other. When Priscilla finds out the doctor is the children’s uncle she finds she has a fight on her hands with a man that brings back so many bad memories for her younger days who isn’t willing to give the children up.
When an accident happens and the doctor is called in he finds the women who caused it all and shakes his head. This woman is prissy and won’t last one week in the hot sun of Texas. When he finds out she is the children’s aunt and is planning on taking the children home with her doesn’t change his opinion of her in the least if anything it makes it worse. One thing is for sure over his dead body will she be taking those children anywhere.
What you find between these pages is a story that is well written with an author who has done her research with a gripping tale that will hold you spellbound as she takes you on an adventure through dangerous territory with Indians that are friendly and some that are not. This is a story with Christian values that is a fun read full of humor, sorrow, danger, love, excitement and even a few thrills. I very much doubt you can pick this book up and put it down easy. The characters are people who you can relate to with a plot that is very exciting. I found myself laughing and at times holding my breath from the vivid details that pull you in making you feel you are there watching the military go through the drills or out on the plains seeing travels through dangerous Indian territory.
Priscilla and Elliot are very strong in body, mind and wills, neither is willing to give an inch. There is a very strong attraction between the two but Pricilla will never marry a military man and Elliot doesn’t think she is strong enough to fit into his world. Both are in for a few surprises as they take each other by storm in this very stormy romance. I just love the twins that keep the story moving as they keep everyone on their toes. They are just a delightful children both so different but still the same. You will find some very dearing moments, some very emotional ones and a few that will almost stop your heart beating. I did find myself doing a little research on a few things I wanted to know more about. The authors research is outstanding she pulls you in with facts that blend well with her plot. I really liked how the romance unfolds slow and steady as the author grabs you right where it counts taking you away to another time in history that you would dearly have loved to have been a part of. The author knows how to pull on your religious beliefs without making the story over powering. Even those who might not care for clean Christian story will find this to be to their taste. This is one author you will want to get to know. I highly recommend this to anyone who is looking for a highly entertaining read that grabs your attention to pick this up. I have picked this as one of my favorite reads for this year.
