This book examines the Fab Four-led British Invasion through a particular lens – American songwriters, in New York, Detroit, Chicago, Nashville, Los Angeles and anywhere else that a man or a woman might sit down and hammer out a tune. The years from 1964 to 1966 show that many U.K. acts coming ashore in the States did so with much help from American songwriters, as is shown in more than 40 songs chronicled in this book.

SHAKE IT UP, BABY: American Songwriters and the British Invasion Reviews

  • Caffeinated Weka

Shake It Up, Baby is a well researched examination of the British Invasion through a very specific lens. It details the circumstances of songs on the Billboard charts from 1964-1966 that were written by American songwriters and performed by British artists. There are a few surprises and I learnt a lot but those without much prior knowledge of the British Invasion and 1960s musical scene might not get so much out of it or find it hard to follow at times.

An enjoyable book for anyone who loved the music of the 60's. It triggered many memories and gave a different perspective to the writing behind many songs and the British groups that recorded them

  • Mike Lessie

Interesting read. I definitely learned many interesting facts and tidbits about the 60's music scene. Special kudos to the author for coining the term "Elvis-h" (ie. Elvis-like). :)
