Two decades ago the Brisbane strain ravaged the global population. Countries collapsed. Institutions fell. The world progressed in some ways, devolved in others, but struggled forward under a different, more brutal set of rules, where not everyone had the right to freedom or life.
Christian Black makes his living exterminating those who've lost their to right live. But on a foggy night in the piney woods, he's made a mistake and killed nearly two dozen of the wrong kind of people.
Societies, even when they change, take a dim view of murder. And now Christian Black might have to alter evidence, get rid of a witness, and kill a few more people if he doesn't want to pay a debt to society he can't afford.

Dystopian thrill ride that'll keep you on the edge of your seat
Book 2 jumps several years into the future from where book 1 ended. I would have liked seeing what happened to Christian and the girl and some of what happened to make him into the stone cold killer he is now but all in all book 2 was an enjoyable read. I'll be watching for book 3 to see what happens next (even tho there's no zombies lol) -
Already ready for the next one!
How do you know you enjoy a book? Well, if it's any indicator, I was up till 2 last night reading this despite needing to be in the office at 8 this morning. Then found myself "working late" at the office - basically sitting at my desk until I finished it.
I've burned through all of Bobby Adair's Slow Burn series (get that?), and thoroughly enjoyed Ebola K, Last Suvivors and Dusty's Diary. It's all good stuff. Black Rust is a little more serious, a little darker, and a lot more... well I don't want to give it away. I'll just say it was great, I enjoyed it, and I'm looking forward to what comes next, regardless of which series. -
I'll be honest I'd never heard of Bobby Adair until I saw this in goodreads giveaways, and I was chosen as a winner, this is full of action and the short chapters make you just want to squeeze in another before getting some sleep, I finished this at 3am I just had to finish it, I loved Christian Black and I'm very happy to learn there will be a sequel, definitely reading more by Bobby Adair

Pretty Gripping read
I never would have guessed the ending. Definitely will keep an eye out for the next book. Well written and I'm already a fan. -
This is the second book in the Black Rust series. This book went in a totally different direction than I had originally envisioned. That's not a bad thing, in fact it was a pleasant surprise.
In this second installment the author has jumped forward about 20 years post initial infection. The main character, Christian Black, has adjusted to the new world is now working as a "regulator" - someone who dispatches troublesome degenerates who's brains have deteriorated from the infection.
I really enjoyed how the author has created a world that has adjusted to the infection and while drastically changed, still works as a functioning society. Many SHTF books move directly from normal to total collapse, so this was a refreshing change. -
Christian Black is an accomplished assassin - fast, accurate and deadly.
H5N1 swept across the world. The Brisbane Strain of the virus mutated the PRNP gene causing prions to chew holes through the brains of the infected. Results? Loss of memories, reduced brain function, effectively leaving the victim sub-moronic, incapable of caring for themselves, eventually leaving them incapable of surviving on their own. Some became violent, some became cannibals, some were capable of simple repetitive functions for a short time until their Swiss cheese brains gave out.
Some of the violent cannibalistic morons were sanctioned for elimination by Regulators. Regulators Christian Black and his creepy partner Franco Lutz received notice of a gathering of degenerates cooking children in a forrest clearing. The assault on the d-gens went horribly wrong and worse - the Sanction ID was pulled, and their assault became mass murders, all recorded by video drones hovering overhead.
The story is strong, the characters well described and their actions believable. The book is well written and I am looking forward to the next chapter. -
Solid Read ......
Solid read that is interesting, with twists and turns; one big twist I definitely never saw coming around the bend.
In total however, this story just isn't really my cuppa tea.
From the start I felt like I'd been suddenly been dropped down into an old timey black and white police/detective show. A grey world where there is minimal to zero character development. We're just off and running. Which does work in some stories - the "off and running" from paragraph number one, but not here without the character development woven in.
The story seems rather ... flat throughout. Even during what's supposed to be exciting. It's more - barely humorous. And the humor between the two main characters definitely is lacking some major pizzazz.
Oddly, the characters we do seem to get to know the best are all secondary one. As well as a woman who enters the tale more than half way through. Even then, it is poorly executed.
Overall, it's not a "bad" story, by any means, and I for sure recommend a read on a Sunday afternoon when you're between you're more usual series of books within your genre. (For me that's military zombie apocalypse with some medicine and/or science in the mix.) Just don't expect much..
Unless you're looking for a good old fashioned gumshoe detective novel, abeit, in an apocalyptic and futuristic type setting.
Very unlike the Adair takes I've read this far - and absolutely LOVED - Slow Burn and Ebola K. -
I really enjoyed the first one, Black Virus, and had very high hopes for this one. I was hoping that, 15 years later, we would meet Christian Black as an adult and we would be able to see how his so called ‘flaws’ mentioned in the first book are now useful in a post apocalyptic world as they have allowed him to see several steps ahead in order survive any situation. However, what I got was just a cold character with an instinct to kill - no complexity, no insight, nothing.
The writing isn’t the best either. I think the first book got away with it because it was really a YA book due to the age of Christian Black, but now he is an adult and the same sarky humour was there but missed the mark. The writing was a bit too obvious and on the nose - we were constantly told details that I didn’t think were needed or that were quite juvenile. The plot was very repetitive and I had to skim a lot of the car chase scenes. Also, the twist at the ending with Lutz was ridiculous - there were no hints throughout the book so it was just a twist to provide a cheap thrill.
Really disappointed with this and would not recommend. -
We're in the middle of a pandemic. What better way to pass the time than to read about a pandemic that sweeps the whole world?
Black Virus is a short story prequel about the virus itself whereas Black Rust is set 15 years later, and is about how people deal with the aftermath.
Fortunately, the Brisbane Strain is nothing like the Coronavirus we're currently dealing with. Rather this is type of zombipocalypse - though those badly affected by the virus become degenerates, rather than zombies who die and come back to life.
These are two thrilling stories, and even though Christian Black is portrayed as 'different' and needing a therapist, actually he doesn't seem that different to me. He just makes hard choices and sometimes goes too far.
At the very end of Black Rust there is a twist in the plot that I didn't see coming (and I like it when I don't see them coming!). According to Amazon, the next book is due out August 2016 and to my knowledge it hasn't been written yet. If/when it does, I would happily read what happens next in the saga. -
Argh, I did not enjoy this story at all 3
Black Rust is set years after "Black Virus" and we don't really get to see what happens with the girl our protagonist was living with at the end of book 1 or what actually happened to make Christian the very effective cold blood killer he is now.
It's kinda sad because I really enjoyed the 1st book and I was very excited to get my hands on the 2nd part of the story but I couldn't connect with the characters (they lack complexity) and the story as a whole (it's very repetitive).
Overall, this story is just not my cup of tea. The story is quite violent and (TRIGGER WARNING) there's an awful rape-as-breaking-a-female-character situation right about the middle of the story. And, personally, I'm just oh so tired of that trope. -
I was a First Read Winner of this book and I really enjoyed it. I liked that it gave a new and different spin to the apocalypse genre, and a believable one at that. It was action packed and full of suspense which had me at the edge of my seat the whole time and I can't wait to find out what will happen next. I liked the main character and wanted to know more about him so I downloaded the prequel to the book, which I got for free, and I am learning more on his backstory, which you really don't miss in this book, but I was curious about it anyway and on how it all got started. Very entertaining and intense and I did not see the ending coming.

(4 stars out of 5)
Soo… this isn’t a genre that I usually read, I guess I have to start with that, but, to my surprise, it was actually quite interesting. Since it’s written in third person, at the beginning I struggled with all the different POV’s that were there, but I’m not complaining. It’s hard to imagine how I would be able to follow the story, if there would just be a single POV. In my experience this just isn’t a very common writing style, so I needed time to adjust.
But, in the end, I was low-key disappointed when I realised that I will not be getting the answer’s to some of the questions that I was looking forward to be finally uncovered. For example, what happened to the girl from the previous book?! And what actually happened in Mexico? -
I have not read many books by this author, but after reading "Black Rust", I will seek out more by Bobby Adair.
The story line is quite plausible, and the speed of the action exhibits a strong pull on the reader to turn the next page. Action vehicles (hover bikes) are given a detailed explanation that lets the reader experience the wind in their face as they pursue the fugitives.
A good book, lots of action and the intrigue could be on the front pages of news feeds everywhere.
Well worth the time to read! -
Holy Mess!!
I am still gripping my kindle with a bit too much ferocity after that ending! Did I love every bit of this book? Of course. Am I ready for the next one? Now, please. The characters are beautiful. They pull so many emotions from me that the experience is exhausting in such a perfect way, like only amazing writing can do. This story is one that begs to be read and doesn't hesitate to please. It's safe to say I loved it. -
Didn’t see that coming!
I loved this. I loved the main character, the action, the dialogue. Everything!! The biggest thing for me is that I can usually predict how a book is going to go. Even though I had an idea that things weren’t what they seemed, the actual conclusion hit me like a ton of bricks. It’s not often that an author gets the jump on me. Very well done. Can’t wait for the next one. I’m very curious to read what happens next. -
Is there a next book? LOL
The set up novella held a lot more promise than this book reveals. Thus can easily be fixed with MORE BOOKS.
This story revolves around a mistake Christian Black makes that puts a price on his head if he can’t fix it.
There’s a mystery to solve on his journey to erase his mistake so he’s not a wanted man. Morally gray protagonist. Anti-hero.
It was a fun read but I don’t see another book …. -
Love this book!!
It amazes me when people say they don’t read because it puts them to sleep. They obviously aren’t reading the right books!!
Love all your stuff, Slow Burn caught me on a cliffhanger on a hunting trip as you may remember , lol
Can’t wait to read more of Christian Black :) -
F-*ktastic!

Thank you for your unique and fun writing, a blessing amid the sh!tstorm of today! -
Another nonstop action book from Bobby
This is yet another nonstop action book from Bobby Adair. He's really got the post apocalyptic thriller down pat.
Unrelated, but his author description on his Amazon page is really a hoot.
Read via Kindle Unlimited. -
Wow another great Bobby Adair audiobook. Ending was not what i was suspecting. N1H1 virus side effects causes people brains to deteriorate. Leaving the world a different less friendly place. Story is about one mans adventure along with a couple of companions survival adventure in the new world.
