The Forgiving Quilt (East Perry County, #1) Reviews

  • Sue

The plot and characters are great, but this book really needed an editor. As a retired English teacher, I cringed at the number of grammar/usage errors in this book.

  • Denise Steffens

Since I grew up and once again live in East Perry County, I love reading about the people and places in this book. Several are real people and places with different names. It is so fun see thing in my mind.

  • Lisa

This book has so many grammatical, usage, and other writing errors that, even allowing for a colloquial style, I couldn't get through it, and I'm surprised it was published. The book cries out for an editor and someone who can guide the author through plot, style, and other basics of writing fiction and mysteries. Ouch.

  • Kay

Could be four stars if not for the misspellings and punctuation errors. I must admit I have ties to the East Perry area. I originally bought this book as a gift for a cousin whose husband grew up in this area. They had great fun recognizing buildings, towns, shops etc. that appear in this book and loaned it to me. So much in this book is accurate, with different names. I know Sharla who is really Carla and Gerald who is Gerald. I have eaten at Marv's, seen this house, yes it is real, gone to the Lutheran Heritage Center, Saxon Memorial and Christmas Country Church Tour. So spoiler alert, I enjoyed reading about a place I know shown in an accurate and generous light.

I absolutely love this book and cannot wait to read the rest of the series. This author has a talent for drawing you into the story and her characters. If you have any ties to East Perry County it is a definate read-I have roots in that area, having gone to Lutheran grade school there and being raised in a nearby town. Even though it is a work of fiction-it transported me to places and people I knew growning up. She captured the feel of the area so well. I don't quilt myself, but I enjoy them and the way she incorperates quilts into her stories as well

I enjoyed the plot of a widow inheriting a home in a different state and all that entails. The characters were well thought out and interplayed well with each other. There were a few unexpected twists that made the story all the more enjoyable. HOWEVER, the editing - or serious lack - was appalling! There were whole sentences run together, and numerous other quirks. I almost gave up, but I enjoyed the storyline. Ann Hazelwood is a gifted writer who would do herself a favor to pair with a better editor.

    Just Okay

I guess I was expecting something better. I liked Kate's relationship with Ellie, but much of the story seemed forced or just filler. I hurried to finish so I could read something more interesting. I've already purchased 3 other books in this series, so I'm hoping the writing improves when I get brave enough to read another by this author.

I just finished reading "The Forgiving Quilt" by Ann Hazelwood and it was wonderful. This is the first of five books in the East Perry County, Missouri series. The author makes you feel like you are actually part of the community.

However, I could not give it a 5 star because of the extremely poor proof reading and editing of the book. There were so many mistakes that at times it actually distracted me from what I was reading and my focus was more on the mistakes. I the second book is better written.

  • Susie

Very predictable but a nice read just the same. No only for quilters.

  • Deborah

This book was poorly written. It did not seem to have a point. I will not be buying any more books in this series or by this author.

  • Amy Infante Peterson

Still havr a lot of questions I need answered

  • Lisa Garrett

The plot was good but it really needed better editing. I had difficulty overlooking the errors.

  • Kelly Knits

Needed an editor. Uneven story, lots of typos and errors.

  • Nikki Wilson

A great summer read. Not too serious, but fun. I liked the characters. I wish they had proof-read better, the book contained a handful of typos.

  • Carolyn

I started reading this book this afternoon at 3pm. Except for a couple of interruptions I didn't put it down until I finished reading the book at 8pm. It is that good and entertaining.
It is a beautiful story of Kate Meyr becoming a truly independent woman after her husband died suddenly as a result of a car accident. Kate had always played the role of being the dutiful wife of a successful businessman. After his sudden death she has to deal with his secrets and come to terms with his infidelity.
She travels from her home in Michigan to Missouri to sell a piece of property left to her by her husband. Her intent was to sell the property as quickly as possible and return to Michigan. She hadn't counted on the charm of the small town and its people to convince her to make this her new home.

I was hooked by the characters

Before I discuss the book I have to release some steam. This book was not a 99¢ special! What I did not expect was the extremely poor proof reading and editing. Shame on the editors for allowing this book to be published with the large number of mistakes. I was so irritated with the number of mistakes that it distracted me from enjoying an otherwise very readable book.
That said, the story was very well done. This was a great summer read.

After the unexpected death of her husband, Kate makes discoveries about him that were unknown to her while they lived together in Michigan. His will left her property and an abandoned house in Missouri. Once she sees this house, Kate realizes this is an opportunity for her to start a new life. She finds an odd quilt in the attic in addition to someone terrorizing her. First of five in a series. Quick read.

Decent story, but the grammar & spelling errors definitely detracted from reading this book. It really needs a good editor/proofreader...obvious misspellings look like spellcheck errors or else the story was dictated to a word processing software then never edited. Many paragraphs were not indented though most were. I would expect MUCH better editing.
