I'm not a big coloring book guy. I have nothing against them. I’m aware of their current popularity. Clearly there are many people out there who enjoy them, and more power to them. It's just not my thing. But I am a huge fan of the Oatmeal.
So I can't really tell whether this is a good coloring book or not. It certainly appears that way to my untrained eye--lots of fairly intricate black and white linework, all sorts of fun details to color.
As an Oatmeal book, it's … not bad. I’d characterize it as one of his lesser efforts. It's the tale of 404, a missing robot, told in rhyme. It's an Oatmeal-y take on a children's book. The verse doesn't scan particularly well; he’s much more interested in bizarre imagery and going for rhymes than he is with the flow of the text. If this were one strip in a typical Oatmeal book, that would be one thing, but, as a standalone book, you pretty much have to be either an Oatmeal fan or an aficionado of coloring books in general to appreciate this. -
I laughed. I cried. I colored.

A superfun book (as expected) by the Oatmeal! It is isn't just a colouring book, it also contains a fun story in rhyme. Namely robot 404 is not found and we see the robots try to figure out what happened and make up all sorts of stories. Some think he got eaten by a deep-sea fish, others think he got sucked into a black hole, some think he met some evil cats. I had such a big laugh at seeing what the robots thought and what kind of stories they made up. The ending was also very funny and I want some cake now.
The illustrations/what you can colour is fab, I really love The Oatmeal's style. It is silly and over the top. -
So, I am reviewing a coloring book. I am doing so because I was awarded a copy of 404 Not Found in a Goodreads giveaway under the agreement that recipients would provide a review. Here is mine….
I am vaguely aware of the apparent fad in “adult” coloring books currently going on. I have no interest in this fad and, indeed, will not be spending my free time coloring the illustrations in 404 Not Found. That does not mean, however, that I did not enjoy this “book”.
As an IT Professional, and general computer nerd, I got a chuckle about the premise of a missing robot named 404. As I’m sure most are aware, 404 is the HTTP status code for a “page not found” error. No doubt we have all experienced this while surfing the web. Turning this into a demented coloring book about where a missing robot named 404 might be is quite clever.
The Dr. Seussian prose is both safe enough for young children and clever enough for adults. What child or adult isn’t captivated by a “terrible toilet squid”? The accompanying illustrations contain big, basic objects easily colored by young kids, as well as finely detailed drawings for complex coloring. There is even a list of hidden objects to be searched for while reading/viewing 404’s adventure. Great fun all around. -
Yes, I read and am rating a coloring book. Full disclosure: I was a backer of the Kickstarter project and received an early release copy. It will be available for sale on October 4, and can be pre-ordered on Amazon now.
That said, 404 is an adorable story about a robot and his cake-eating friends, written with a Dr. Seussian sort of rhyming whimsy that I found both surprising and oddly impressive. It shouldn't have been, it's pure Oatmeal and totally in character, yet I really felt it went above and beyond.
The pictures are also everything one would hope from The Oatmeal, with lots of round kittens, a hidden taco, cute little owls, and even Jibbers Crabst. It has a fair amount of the intricacy found in adult coloring books, but many pages are still appropriate in skill level (as well as over-all story*) for anyone whose age is into double digits.
*At least by my standards. YMMV. -
I love the Oatmeal and Matthew Inman is a genius. It's pretty simple as that. I pre-ordered this book/coloring book and wasn't disappointed for a moment by the art, story, or the appeal. I can't wait to start coloring this, although I sort of feel the need to save it and cherish the awesome it is. Maybe I need to buy two copies.

I haven't colored in all the pages yet, but I've read the entire thing several times, and you guys it is so entertaining... SO. Entertaining. My favorite part was the bit about the baby owls, because they just look so cute and friendly, but then... yeah, I won't spoil it for anyone.

I won this book from the GoodReads GiveAways. Our family has always enjoyed The Oatmeal, so this was a wonderfully entertaining surprise! Very cute and family-friendly story, with fantastic illustrations, as always. I was most pleased to see the Bearadactyl make an appearance! :) Thank you GoodReads and Carol Mann Agency for the giveaway, and hope others enjoy it as much as I have!

The Oatmeal Coloring book! Have you ever wonder what happened to your webpage and the robot behind it? Well, here are some creative situations. I did appreciate the mix of connect the dots and hidden objects thrown in with the coloring pages. I recommend the first time through you read it out loud to get the rhythm and go back through a second time to search the pages for all the treasures.

The Oatmeal's humor, a bunch of playful Dr. Seuss-like rhymes and the coloring book craze come together delightfully!
-
A story about a missing robot, robot cake, some natural (well, almost) things the robots hang out with. Or could be eaten by.) Could probably be an interesting story book/coloring book for kids.
Definitely weird though.
Am looking forward to coloring in it. (What can I say? It was a gift. :D ) -
MUST HAVE THIS!
-
Very funny grown-up coloring book. The silly, rollicking rhymes remind one of Dr. Seuss while the drawings to color offer much to the imagination

This coloring book is ridiculously awesome. 404 the robot goes missing, and we must find him. This is the activity book you enjoyed as a kid, made for grownups. I <3 this book.
