It has been a very long time since I have read something by Susan Sizemore. I enjoy the premise of her books, and they have a different take on the supernatural world than other Paranormal Romance books. Primal Needs is set in the same world as her other “Primal” books, however this one should not be read as a stand- alone novel. Reading her other books is a must in order to understand all of the different types of characters. Enter a world of Vampires, Werewolves and Psychics who are all fighting against each other for power and politics.

Sidonie Wolf is a female vampire who is stifled by her clan. She wants to live her life the way she sees fit, however vampire politics wont let that happen. She did work for some time however as a private investigator until she fell in love… with her partner! The fact that her partner is a Werewolf is against all the rules. In order to protect her lover and herself, she erases his memories and hopes that they can forget one another.

Joe Bleythin had to get away from his former partner Sidonie. He joined a group of paranormal investigators called the Dark Angels, to protect and help other supernatural beings like him. When arsonists begin to set fires targeting the local vampires and werewolves, he has to form an alliance with Sidonie to get to the bottom of what’s going on. Joe’s memories begin to return to him, and he cant help the undeniable attraction he has to Sid. Working with someone has never been so hard…

This book was very choppy and challenging to understand. The mystery is never resolved at the end, and Joe and Sidonie’s relationship seems totally unbelievable. There is an entirely different side story going on with two Vampires that is way more interesting than the story between Joe and Sid. I really would have liked more closure about who the bad guys were and why they were so “bad”. In all fairness, this is an ARC, and there might be many changes made before the book is actually released in mass-market paperback. Overall, Primal Needs by Susan Sizemore left me confused, and a little bit irritated that I wasted my time. I wouldn’t recommend it.

4.5 stars! I loved Sid (we got to know her in her brother's book Master of Darkness) and I liked how she fell in love with a werewolf, but vampires and werewolves can't fall in love...or can they? She and Joe broke the rules, but Sidonie erased Joe's memory of their time together and their love. So even though they worked together daily, they were only friends from Joe's perspective. Until the last book...where they found out that werewolves and vampires can bond and have little were-vamps! So Joe asks and Sid doesn't lie-she tells him everything...to a point. Joe gets mad and joins the Dark Angels-a supernatural CSI/special ops team. Very cool.
He and Sid are paired up and by this point-3yrs later-he has his memories back. They try to fight it, but can't, and their love and desire is still there. So, even though they can physically be together now, the vampire rules don't let them. Until Sid and her fellow lady vamps start a mini rebellion against the matris and while their fate's undecided, they are allowed to live at least.
But the bad guys who are experimenting on the vamps and weres are still out there...and we got some new info on them too!
The only thing I was annoyed with is Tony Crowe, Sidonie's sire, had a mini story running throughout-which was fine, but with Joe and Sid flashing back between 3 yrs ago, 5 yrs ago and the present, reading about Tony Crowe from 1944 and Tony from the present. It got confusing. Susan Sizemore tends to put alot of either dream sequences or memories through out her books, but this was less informative and more confusing. I did like the storyline with Tony and Rose, and how it ties into the experiments being done...but it got to be a bit much with the time shifts. But I still loved the book, and the series :)

The first thing that needs to be addresses about this book is Tony and Rose's captivity: More important than escaping was having ridiculous amounts of sex? How hilarious is that?! And it's even funnier because Sidonie taps into the sex marathon on accident and jumps Joe's bones, causing them to bond.

Joe is totally sexy. He's smart, gorgeous, funny. And he's a studly werewolf! Can he get any better? And I loved the way he reacted to Sid, especially after all the memories she hid from him came back.

I loved all Sidonie's reactions to Joe, too, and that she had been trying to protect him all those years. I hate that they took Charles and her memories of and feelings for him away from her. I absolutely loved Laurent, her brother, and when he was making fun of her about Charles' name.

Eden pissed me off a bit with how high-handed and harsh (in my opinion) she was to Sid where Joe was concerned.

I thought it was hilarious that Tony let himself be captured and then broke them out while Sid and Joe fought the guards so he could be the rescuer, not them.

I was scared that they were gonna kill Joe, even though I knew it had to end with an HEA.

Tobias chafed at me with his high-handedness.

Thank God for the female vampire revolution. I loved that they all decided to join the Dark Angels.

This was a great book and I need to read the other books in the series.

I liked the book for the scenes and for the concept that it offered. The only thing that I did not like was the flash backs. I felt as times it interuppted the story. I would be completely engrossed in what was going on with the main character and then all of a sudden I was transported in time and was reading about different characters. That just did not do it for me. I am curious though if there will be another book to this story only becuase there are things that left unsaid and stories that are not finished. If there is another book then I will read it becuase I would like to know what happens. But overall it was a good book, and it held my attention.

    Two Happily-Ever-Afters all in one.

It is forbidden for vampires and werewolves to mix. After a blistering hot affair, Sidonie “Sid” Wolf blocks the memories of the affair from her werewolf lover, Joe Bleythin’s, mind, knowing that should the Matris ever learn of the affair, they would kill Joe in front of her, and then kill her, simply to teach the younger generation the consequences of the improper act. Blocking those memories was Sid’s attempt at keeping Joe alive, but Joe sees the action as betrayal and definitely not forgivable, for to Joe, it’s mind rape what the vampires do, and he hates it with a passion.

Sid had fallen in love with Joe, and has not been able to forget their time together. With her heart belonging to another, and pressure coming down to choose a Prime to bond with, to procreate, Sid took another course of action and became pregnant through artificial insemination. Sid believes their vampire world needs to be brought into the twenty-first century, and will do what she believes is necessary. But one thing she can’t battle is upon her. Her son, Charles, has hit his terrible twos, and in the vampire world, terrible twos take on a whole new meaning, for they really do become monsters; their testosterone levels boost to such that she cannot take care of him alone, and he’s being taken from her to live in a ‘creche’, sort of like a vampire family trained to taking care of young male vampires, to help them past the “monster” stage. What Sid didn’t know, was that her maternal instincts will be blocked from her mind, much in the same way that she blocked Joe’s memories, in a ceremony called the “Sevening”. She will remember that she has a son, but her maternal instinct, her bond and feelings about her son will become robotic - she loves him, he’s gone to live with people who will take care of him for their safety, and that’s it.

Meanwhile, Joe is truly pissed at what Sid had done, and after drinking a concoction by the Dark Angels resident witch, his memories come back, only to piss him off even more. For even while he loathes Sidonie, he still wants her, only much more.

After the “Sevening” ritual, Sid goes along with a group of volunteers to fight a forest fire, only to be thrown together with Joe by Tobias Strahan, the leader of the Dark Angels. Tobias believes that Sid hold unknown information from the time she’d been held by the Manticores. She knows that she’d never heard any information relevant to what Tobias is looking for, but she does know that she won’t tell what happened to her. For if she does, she’ll be treated much like a porcelain doll, just like everyone is treating her mother. And Sid refuses to be treated like she’s breakable.

And while she’s thrown together with Joe, her sire and Clan Prime, Tony, is still in love with the mortal he’d met during the second world war; Rose Cameron. But bonding with a mortal was forbidden, and Tony had no choice but to let her go. But he still sends her roses every year, and this time, visits her. But when she disappears without a trace, Tony is terrified and asks Sid for help. Gregor, a rogue vampire, had been with Rose for over a year, in a nursing home run by rogue vampires, and has been administering a drug, one that will bring Rose’s body back to a young form. In order to maintain that form, she will have to bond with a vampire, drinking in his blood daily. And while it’s not a guaranty, she loves Tony too much not to try.

Two incredibly beautiful happily-ever-afters in one book is nice, but I didn’t like the way it happened. I felt like they each deserved their own story; it sort of felt like one HEA breaking through the original HEA of the story and I didn’t find that fair.

Sid is a strong female vampire with strong beliefs and wants to help the young female vamp generation move into this century. While some customs should be kept, she believes that females should be treated as the strong women they are, not females to be ‘kept’. In the story, Joe bonds with Sid, something extremely forbidden, and while he knows what that can bring, he loves Sid, and bonded with her for that exact reason. Sid, petrified of what can happen, is distraught when they are brought to the clans matris. And if it wasn’t for Dr. Casmerek and his DNA research proving that female vampires and male werewolves can bond, can produce offspring, the worst could have happened for Sid and Joe.

So, while Joe and Sid have their HEA, Tony and Rose have theirs, and yet, there’s something I don’t really get. A vampire and werewolf bonding is usually faced with death. That crisis was averted, but what about Tony and Rose? Their bond is frowned upon as well, back then he was forced to leave her, but how come they weren’t questioned? How did they manage to evade the scrutiny? They have, which is nice, but I wonder if someone in their world will make something of it later.

And the mystery, the rogues, continues. Can’t wait for the next book!

    Forbidden love... Times two

At long last we get the romance between former friends and partners: vampiress sleuth Sidonie Wolf and werewolf detective Joe Bleythin. The pair have been estranged for several years after, much to his disgust, Joe discovered that Sidonie erased from his mind all memories of the love they shared during the affair that consummated years of forbidden attraction - vampires and werewolves both have cultural taboos against mating outside their species. Where there has been some recent loosening in strictures for male Primes (vampires) , females like Sidonie are far too rare and `Sid' knows that should the matriarchal leaders of the Primes discover her indiscretion, it would mean death for both her and Joe in order to make them a cautionary tale to all other females who think to stray from the tradition that chafes the younger generation of female Primes.

Joe has hated Sid for what he perceives as `mind rape' and once his memories are unlocked, freeing the details of their passionate encounters, he is even angrier at her betrayal. But when a mission for the Dark Angels, a special ops group of supernaturals dedicated to protecting their races from threat of discovery and annihilation, forces Joe and Sid into close contact, Joe is having a hard time maintaining his anger and an even harder time thinking at all because of the overwhelming desire he still feels for Sid.

But Sid and Joe's isn't the only romantic reunion in the book. Sid's sire Tony has finally decided to claim the woman, Rose, he has loved for 60 years - the human woman he was ordered to leave behind by the matriarch of his clan. But when Rose vanishes from the nursing home where she's spent the last few years awaiting death and there is no trace left that she was ever there, Tony calls in Sid to find his missing Rose and Joe is irked but follows Sid when she abandons the mission which is key to maintaining the safety of their races and heads off Los Angeles to find her father's missing mate.

I thoroughly enjoyed both couples' romances. I have been waiting so long for Joe and Sid to act on the amazing sensual tension between them in the previous books that it was great to finally see them unable to keep from coming together, even past the hurt, and anger and the fear for the price that their love may incur. I also liked the romance between Tony and Rose which was alternately very sweet - with much of their story told in flashbacks from when they met during the war- and then steamy -as they finally reunite with explosive passion and are granted a chance to make up for the years that were lost to them. Both stories matched well, each with a themes of forbidden romance and a bond so powerful that it can not be denied.

I've read all of the other books in the Prime series but I have to admit that other than Joe, Sid and Sid's brother Laurent -I love bad boys who go good - I recognized but didn't remember most of the returning characters. But the parts of the story that tie into the larger story arc of the series are quite thin here and Sizemore provides a pretty good refresher on her `Prime' world, so if you haven't read the previous books it won't be that difficult to come up to speed, the only thing you will be missing is the big pay off from seeing Sid and Joe finally come together after watching them sizzle in the past few books.

So thumbs up for me for Primal Needs, and I'm hoping that we see more of the Dark Angels and their leader Tobias in Sizemore's next book - hmmm Tobias and Flair, that might work.

    Choppy and superficial

I’m surprised I finished this book to be honest as it was incredibly boring and I didn’t care about any of the characters. The only way I was able to manage it was by majorly skimming the book.

This book is part of a series and while it might help you if you read the previous books I still don’t think this book can be salvaged into a meaningful story. From the description of the book, readers expect a story about a female vampire and her forbidden werewolf love. What they get instead is this mess of flipping between two couples with no character or couple development.

    Couple #1: Sid and Joe
Their “relationship”, if it can even be called that, consists of them having sex. Literally they have no meaningful conversation or bond between them besides this constant whining issue about how she stole his memories of their time together. Boohoo. No idea who they are as a couple or individuals as they are lacking all personality.

    Couple #2: Tony and Rose
Tony is Sid’s sire and loves a human. Won’t get into the whole situation of why it didn’t initially work out with this woman but most of the relationship between these two were in flashbacks. That’s fine I guess if we don’t get as deep of a relationship arc between these two as they are supposed to be secondary characters but then why put them in in the first place? Only thing this did was detract from the main couple. For being a secondary couple, almost 50% of the book is dedicated to their relationship development. That’s way too much.

The switches between the two intertwining story lines was choppy and not well done. The whole book made me feel blah. Even writing this I can’t dredge up any emotion about the book or the characters. I just don’t care. Give this one a pass and read something else. Happy reading!

Susan Sizemore's Prime series always does a wonderful job of bringing a full and complete story to a satisfying conclusion - while still managing to tease the reader so they are panting for the next one.

    From the back cover:

This book confused me. Not because it had been so long since I'd previously read this series, but because the timeline jumped around so very much that I spent too much time dazed and confused. The jumping around in time was occuring between the H/H but also - mostly, in fact - between the H/H characters from the first book.

There was a major betrayal about 5 yrs ago between this book's H/H. They had been partners, best friends and ultimately lovers for a wonderful weekend. I couldn't buy the effects of the betrayal nor the actual actions the characters took. I guess I really didn't even believe in the characters' themselves. Pretty uninspiring, huh?

So altho Susan Sizemore writes well, I think I'll have to file this one under "forget this series" and perhaps even "forget this author". I just don't need it when there are much better authors and storylines out there.

The last of the Prime’s loose end love interests are tied up into a proverbial love knot. An unspoken war and conspiracy plots are bubbling to the surface remain as a secondary plot that needs to be answered. But will it? It’s been 2 years between Primal Desires and Primal Needs. Will this be the end of the series? Will the author leave this threat to the vampire clans, and werefolk unresolved? By the looks of her website it will. She has a Primes #8 “Dark Stranger” coming out Oct. 27, 2009 but its set in the distant future on a starship. And since I’m not into spaceship/sci-fi romance I’ll be checking it out from the library but I doubt I’ll be buying it.

In the last book, we left with Sidonie Wolf and Joe Bleythin going their separate ways after Joe found out that Sidonie had altered his memories of their affair together. Starting this book, Sidonie now has a 2 year old son, conceived through artificial insemination who is now old enough to go into the clan creche - so she's "severed" from her bond to him. In the meantime, Sidonie ends up working with the Dark Angels, with whom Joe is working, in order to stop some arsonists who seem to be Tribe vampires and purists. Joe pretty much hates Sidonie and she tries to avoid him, because she's still very much drawn to him and is still trying to protect him. But these efforts are useless and before long they're sleeping together, each knowing the futility of it. Sidonie is terrified that the clans will kill Joe and he still believes she did it because she believes his kind is inferior. But the bond is irrefutable, so the real question is how will they get past the clan laws in order to be together.

I might have liked this much more if I'd liked Sidonie at all. I didn't like her in the last book and I didn't like her much in this book either. She's all blustery and determined to earn her freedom and independence, but she equally refuses to buck the system. She won't stand up to anyone but bitches and whines how unfair her life is. Meanwhile, despite supposedly loving Joe, she basically takes away his freedom to make choices for himself when she decides to protect him from their love. And she doesn't see the hypocrisy. She hates having her choices taken from her but has no problem taking someone else's. Joe was okay, but he needed to stay angry longer. He seemed to forget the very serious betrayal going on there...especially since he didn't know the reason for it. But the two end up with a pretty decent working relationship and friendship. Baby Charles, in the meantime, might as well not exist for all the impact he had on this story. I guess it's an example of how unfair the clans are, but she acknowledges the necessity of it and only makes a token effort of complaint. It's like the author painted her into a corner on that one and decided to just drop it. I'm not sure if we'll see more of that later.

This story was actually divided into two: there was Joe and Sidonie's issues and then equal time spent on Sidonie's sire Tony and the love of his life, Rose. Now their story was interesting, it being the story of love lost...or postponed at least. Rose and Tony met during World War II, when she was just 17 -they fell in love and Tony knew she was his bondmate. But his matri refused permission for them to be together, so Tony had to stay away from her. Now, however many years after this particular matri has died, Tony accidentally is seen by Rose and I guess Tony decides they'll be bonded. His motivations were unclear. It seemed like he was going to leave her alone, but then he didn't. Rose was dying at this point, so it seems he waited an awfully long time. It could have been too late. So there was plenty of interest and angst going on here, but there was one detail I hated. Rose waited. She was celibate her entire life because Tony was the only man she loved. Tony on the other hand had no such compunction. In his explanation, that was impossible for his kind unless he was bonded. So despite loving her more than life itself and knowing she was his potential bondmate, he had no problem following his biological urge and sexing it up (even siring a daughter). He didn't even seem guilty about it...which would have at least been appropriate if biology was the reason he had to do it. And again, Rose just forgave his leaving her alone for over 50 years way too easily. And her first question should have been, how long had he been allowed to be with her before actually showing up? This could have been a really good story except for the handling of these vampires and their morally questionable actions...and their using their Prime personality as an excuse for being considerate.

I bought this at a giant used book sale because I recognized the author from my past romance reading days. This particular book was the middle of a series, but each book can be read as a stand alone. I feel like I would have liked it more if I had read the rest of the series.

What I had a really hard time with was the amount of typos. I kept finding them left and right. It was very annoying.

Also, one of the major conflicts didn't get resolved, even though for a minute I though that it might, so that was disappointing.

  • Nikki

It's a good book but it's hard to follow and it took me a little bit a reading to get into it. Overall, I really enjoyed it though.

  • May Mostly Romance

I enjoyed this novel very much. I liked how the fling between a werewolf and a vampire could be so wrong, yet so right. It added a mix of danger into the novel. One that was surely needed. This made for an excellent twist on the story, because the women are only supposed to bond to Primes. So with the added risk of killing her beloved, the plot of the story was made in perfection. However, I didn't really like how it kept switching from one story to another. The focus either needed to be on Sidonie or Tony, not on both. This made the stories it's pretty confusing at times, and it's not exactly what we'd expect it to be either.

One of the main characters was Sidonie, a female vampire surrounded by way too many emails. Sidonie is a strong-willed woman that's being kept in a cage. She only gets to do some of the things that she desperately wants, while everything else is kept as far away as possible. Sidonie must do her duty towards our clan, even if it means she doesn't want to. However, it may just be the only way to get them off her back for good. Joe has long since left Sidonie behind after finding out what she did to him. He quit his family's PI business and left to join the Dark Angels. Joe knows that he hates Sidonie, but he can't help but wonder if he did love her for a time. With all of this in his mind constantly, he sought out the help of a witch friend. Only her help seemed to work a little too well, because Sidonie reappears in his life. The leader of the Dark Angels think that Sidonie might know something very important to him. Something about her kidnapping. To help her retrieve those memories, he sent Joe to watch her and report back to him. So not only does Sidonie waltz back into his life, but he has to babysit her too. This doesn't go well for either of them, considering the fact that they're both very stubborn. But what's worse is when old feelings start to rise between them again.

This novel is more of a paranormal / forbidden romance novel than anything else. It seems to focus more on the romantic aspect than anything else at this point. Including the parts that have it switch off to the other characters. I'm actually surprised by how well it turned out, because it usually doesn't when it's like this. There usually has to be another aspect in the novel to keep it going. However, I think the double story actually made up for the lack of it. I'm not a big fan of two stories in one novel and this novel is no exception to that. I think it would have been better to do their stories separately instead. However, this isn't up for me to decide. As far as a recommendation goes I'd recommend reading this novel with series. It goes along with the theme that Susan Sizemore has going on. Making it a must-read for this series. It's not a bad novel, but it could use a little more work to it overall.

I liked the idea of were's and vamp's in this book. I liked the culture and how they live. But everything else about this book has me scratching my head.

It was a book that was very choppy; it constantly jumped between present day and flashback scenes to the main characters we were reading about. This was very disorienting and frustrating, half of the flashbacks weren't really needed in my opinion.

There were basically two plot lines running simultaneously in this book, one with Rose and Tony and the one with Sid and Joe. It would have been better if they had been two separate books or written differently. I had difficulties with the transitions between what was going on with Rose and Tony and what was going with Sid and Joe. The plot or 'mystery', I guess it could be called, was never actually closed in this book.

Very disappointing and frustrating to read.

Sidonie Wolf is a female vampire who wants more than the traditional protected life that is available. She has forged her way to an independent life, but the love of her life cannot be. Joe Bleythin is a werewolf and if she admits to love he will be killed. She erases his memory so that he will be safe.

Why I picked it up: I like Sizemore's stories. A bit on the light side of vampire romances, but enjoyable. I was interested on how she would handle a romance with a female vampire lead.

Why I finished it: I was worried there might be something that I needed to know in the next book of the series. (Although Sizemore is very good at right self-contained stories in each of her books.)

another great prime book from susan sizemore. so much is happening in this book. i love the couple on sid and joe. and the couple of tony and rose. i love it how 2 couples came together. even though many factions are out to get them. although i think the next book. will take over that storyline. excellent. and hot. if you know what i mean.

This is number 7 in the Prime series, I haven't read any of the others...yet. This was good enough to make me want to read more about this world existing within our own. Vamps and Weres trying to stay secret from the mortals. Good action and adventure, good romance (standard love story), plenty of non-graphic sex, and a pretty good storyline add up to a really good book.

I refuse to read much more of this book. I never made it too far past the part where her family made her forget her child. I think that somethings would be unforgivable. I liked previous books by this author a lot but if many more are like this I will not be reading them.

Nice book. Good characters. Interesting inter-species relationships. Seems to be part of a series but I had no problem picking up just this one. Some of the better vampire/werewolf paranormal I've read lately.

This would have been a 4 if there hadn't been so much of the going back and forth between times and people. The story was good and I liked Sid and Joe a lot. I think their story would have been better if it had just been about them though.

My first with Susan Sizemore. This is #9 of the series Prime. At the beginning I was struggling with characters and their titles. If I had read 1-8 confusion might have been limited. Writing was fine. Very little type os.

Got to say, I'm generally quite indulgent with this series, but the conclusion was awful! Random young female vamps standing up for their rights with no clear conclusion? Nuh uh, I'm afraid it just didn't work.

  • Alex

This was a mistake read. I can't believe I started this series on the seventh book--however enticing the cover was--that is a reader's no-no. No wonder I was confused throughout the reading experience.

  • Molly Smith

I really enjoyed this story and the two main characters, but I felt their story was interrupted by the story of two others. I felt a bit mislead by the summary. Not that I didn't enjoy the story arc with its twists and turns, but I wanted more of the "main" couple's story.

  • Annette

I was dissappointed skimmed through ALOT of the book. Rarely have to do that with this author.

I loved the first books in this series but found this one very hard to get into and a lot left unexplained!!! Hope the next book is like the ones before as I really like this author
