A Magical Shift (Weres and Witches of Silver Lake, #1) Reviews

  • Angela (Angel's Book Nook)

A Magical Shift is book one in the Weres and Witches of Silver Lake by Vella Day.

I picked this up for free through the retailer. There were some interesting things going on with a stocker and then things happening in town that weren't normal.

Unfortunately, the story and characters weren't pulling me in. I really tried to read this, but kept setting it aside to read something else. My main issue was I wasn't connecting with the characters. I didn’t feel the attraction or romance between our leads. The words were there, but the feelings weren't coming through to me.

I eventually just said that’s enough and DNF'd this title at 28%.

Even though A Magical Shift wasn’t the book for me I urge you to give it a shot, especially if the blurb intrigues you. Just because it did not work for me does not mean it won’t for you.

This is a terrific new series from Vella Day “Weres and Witches of Silver Lake”. In book 1, Isadora Berta is an elemental witch and she is now returning back to Silver Lake after being overseas in Europe learning about her and her witchcraft studies. Suddenly she gets a feeling, an urge to go home earlier than expected—something is coming-for her-something bad. Something is wrong so she goes home when her Goddess tells her to go for she is needed.
Then there is Ryerson McKinnon- he is a firefighter, a wolf, and he is about to become Alpha of the clan. He is also feeling stressed so his friend suggests he get a “cleansing” –oh wow did that make Mister Alpha make a frowzy face –he doesn’t believe in that sort of thing. But his best friend suggests it so off he went to Wendayan Mrs Berta and ends up running into her daughter. She ends up giving him his cleansing and she ends up giving him a lot more-He just found his mate.
I loved how there was this filled with a paranormal thread but also with real life everything situations. There is romance, action, passion, suspense, oh and the paranormal aspect is fantastic. I loved the clan that Rye is fixing to be Alpha of. He is made for the roll and when he meets his mate- oh how he was soo not prepared for Isadora but he was ready to step up and get it right for her. His mind and body become immediately ready. OH and it is Soo sexy hot—their interactions will make your kindle .and you-melt. Izzy is so sweet and she was so unprepared for her mate but she wants to help her clan-Rye is clan-get ready for the whole wolf/witch mate hotness and when her mate finds out she is being stalked, they don’t call Rye “ALPHA” for nothing.
This was a great new take on paranormal were/witch books that I have seen of late and I love it. I cannot wait for book 2.
    My Rating: 4.7 stars *****

I love paranormal themes but found this lacking. The storyline seemed a bit slow. The characters aren't strong in their paranormal abilities. Parts of the book had me simply rolling my eyes. Not a series I have any interest in continuing.

    Loved it

Omg kudos to the author i loved it just enough romance and excitement can't wait to read book 2 of the series love it

  • Camille

It was ok. The writing wasn't great. The dialogue was stilted and not appealing. I didn't like that about half way through, we lost Rye's point of view. It was ok and I finished it but I don't think I will be reading the rest.

I absolutely love this new series by Vella Day, it's going to be a hit!

Isadora Berta is a Wendayan, an elemental witch, the Wendayan, wolf and bear shifters alike live in harmony in Silver Lakes. Izzy has been in Europe for the past 4 years learning from the best Wendayans. She is now in the last leg of her studies in the Scottish Hylands without an inkling that she is being observed by an evil being, but she is prompted to go home to the States right away. Izzy has no idea what is so dire that she should go home a month early, but does not qu stion the Goddess. She never imagined that she would be cleansing the aura of such a specimen of a man, especially since she doesn't know if her powers will make themselves known in his presence

Ryerson McKinney has never had a cleansing of his aura, he has never believed in any of that mumbo jumbo, but what the heck, as a firefighter he needs to unwind and a good massage from the Wendayan Mrs. Berta could never go wrong. What Rye never expected was to see Mrs. Berta's all grown up daughter open the door to greet him. What a beauty she turned out to be and all of the future Alpha's ability to control his wolf went out the door, so how would it go under her fingers when she started the massage?

One of the things I loved the most about this story was the lack of all the pack politics. These seem like such ordinary everyday people and I loved it! The different paranormal thrown in the mix is great also, love to see the mix. All in all this is a great traditional love story with a little hocus pocus thrown in, not to mention the shifting.....You will love this story.

I was given this book in exchange for an honest review.

I didn't particularly enjoy this book, wasn't enough imagination put into the book and lacked a better theme, I just didn't like it. It took me forever to finish cause I had no interest in it really..

  • Maya

Found the story to be weak. Thought the characters were unremarkable. Had to force myself to finish it.

This is the 1st book I read by Vella Day. I'm sorry this book's story line & characters didn't grab my interest.

    3.5 of 5 stars

This paranormal romance by new to me author Vella Day was a good series starter.

    What I liked:
    - This story had a really entertaining story line that held my interest and was fast paced.
    - Both main characters as well as secondary characters were likable and I feel like they were really well developed.
    - I liked this version of a shifter and witch world. I like the way the author gave it diversity of creatures (different kinds of weres and witches) and not automatically having the different supernatural creatures as adversaries.

When it comes to narration of this story, the narrator did a good job with throwing in some accents so it wasn't just one and I think he did good overall with trying to give a different voice to each different character even if it didn't always hit the mark for me.

Would I read the next book in this series or others by this author? Absolutely. Would I listen to other stories by this narrator? Yes, at least one more. There were occasional moments were the tone went a little nasal sounding as the story went along but it wasn't anything that would deter me from at least giving him one more listen. This was my first narration by Michael Johnson and I would certainly be willing to try another.

  • Shayay

Narrator did a good job. He gave a clear, quality performance. I’d recommend listening.

Izzy is a witch, who is returning home after some weird events happen to her abroad. She’s been away for years, so she’s happy to be with her family again. Unfortunately, someone with some bad intentions has followed her. Ryerson is a wolf shifter firefighter, who has known of Izzy for awhile, but hasn’t really been fully near her. When he actually comes to know her, he realizes that there’s a good possibility she is his mate. He doesn’t want to scare her off with how passionately he wants her, so he tries to maintain his composure but his wolf isn’t up for that. Add in someone out to hurt her, and Rye’s protective nature wants to go full force. Izzy is attracted to Rye too, but she’s confused by him putting the breaks on when they are together.

Loved the stalker premise! It adds some nice suspense to the story. The magical elements were fun too, and of course, I love the shifter aspect. Love the protective nature of Ryerson! Rye and Izzy have good chemistry with some good steam too. I do think they should’ve figured things out a lot sooner, but the story was still entertaining. Looking forward to checking out more books by Vella Day!

There were aspects of this book that I enjoyed. The sexy time scenes were reasonably decent, and I liked that the pack of shifters weren't all wolf-shifters.

I did not like how the female lead was terrific at magic and was proud of her magic and loved using it, but then she gets bitten by the male lead and very shortly after learning that she'll likely lose her powers if she chooses to shift that she'd decide to shift. Also, her life seemed pretty decent as a witch. I don't understand why part way through the book that the attitude towards her family shifts and suddenly she's being welcomed so warmly by the pack of shifters, and her family is an afterthought. Maybe because the author wanted it to be more believable that the female lead (sorry, I can't remember any character's name) would choose to be a shifter instead of a witch? I didn't buy it. It would have been way more believable for her not to choose to shift. Also, I would have liked her to finish off her stalker instead of the male lead... and she could have done it with magic.

About as exciting as watching paint dry.

Not only is this book, which is the start of a series, a real snorefest, but it is also poorly written with numerous grammatical errors and typos. Another problem for me is the juvenile tone the story is written in as well as being incohesive and hard to follow. A Magical Shift will NOT keep you up reading into the night.

Ryerson "Rye" McKinnon is a firefighter and soon to become alpha of the wolf/bear clan in Silver Lake, Tennessee when his mate to be Isadora "Izzy" Berta returns from abroad after the moon goddess Naliana tells her to head back to Silver Lake. And not a moment too soon as Izzy has a stalker, Owen Chancellor, a Changeling wolf, who wants Izzy as his mate and won't take no for an answer.
Though it is never fully explained, Changelings are evil.

The story is predictable with one-dimensional characters who are unremarkable as is the plot — not the best start to a series with lots of room for improvement in the second story.

On my Were Scale of Hotness, 2 stars.

This is a fantastic listen. First by the author and the narrator. The author has a great story telling PNR listen. It has a great layers story. With lots of twists and turns . The story has two different energy changing coming Hero’s and Heroines .

Hero is Ryerson. Heroine is Isadora
Both Ryerson and Isodora need saving but they don’t know it . As things stand they save each other, you ask your self how ? You need to grab it and see how . Isadora is a witch , and elements witch . Both Ryerson and Isadora knew each other yrs ago . Now that they see each other again , it’s gets hot and heavy , but in a good way . Isadora is in Europe learning. But she needs to go home to Silver lake. Silver Lake is where witches, bears and wolfs live in harmony together. But something is disturbing the peacefulness between all the shifters . That’s where Ryerson and Isadora get together to save the shifters from the evil

This was a great listen I highly recommend it

Two werewolves + One Witch = A Magical Shift

Rye is a shifter destined to be the Alpha male of his clan. Isadora is a powerful witch aiming to help her coven in any way she can. The two cannot deny the immense attraction. But how could a wolf mate with a witch? One can definitely find out.

But then a lone wolf stalks into town and he wasn’t leaving until he made Isadora his mate for life.

I was fascinated by the supernatural world of witches and werewolves, and the evil wolf surely added a thrilling twist to the story. But, overall, this was just a mating story. The sex, of course, was intense and powerful. The climactic scene where the wolves fight was rundown and should’ve had more excitement. Still, this was a pretty good story.

Awww this was a very cute romantic paranormal read. I love the idea of a shifter falling for a witch. Rye is getting ready to take over as Alpha from his dad, with his beta and best friend Kalen by his side. The last thing he thought he needed was a mate but when Izzy is called back from Europe by the Goddess, that changes and Rye can’t seem to stop thinking of the girl he’s known all his life. Izzy has been travelling for 4 years homing her skills but a sudden call back from the goddess starts to worry her, she returns home but what happens when a witch meets her mate?
Loved the story, plot and characters, it was romantic, sexy and very sweet with a bit of angst thrown in, I enjoyed this story and can’t wait to move on to Kalen and Elana’s story.

  • Deborah Gebhardt

What is a witch to do, Izzy has traveled Europe to expand her knowledge and powers. Little does she know, that she has been discovered by a werewolf. But, the moon goddess has ordered her home, and she obliges. Once home, one of the first non-family members she see when she returns is Ryerson McKinnon, the up-and-coming Alpha wolf, and their attraction is mutual. What Izzy doesn't know is that her peeping Tom from Europe has followed her with the intent to make her his, despite obstacles such as Ryerson and Izzy herself.

I have got to be honest... I don't remember reading this book. It didn't stand out from all the other shifter erotica. I can't remember a plot or even the names of these characters. I did actually finish this one though... But sometimes I half check out so I can stomach it all and get through it. It is obviously erotica from the description, and I obviously didn't leave a lasting impression on me. Not sure if forgetting this one was intentional or not, but I really don't like any of these types of stories, so I am giving it 1 star.

  • Brianna Belbin

This was a steamy start to a new paranormal romance series! Isadora, a witch, has to keep who she truly is a secret, but all she wants is a normal life. Ryerson is preparing to become alpha of his pack and the last thing he dreamed of was meeting his mate this soon. Will he do whatever it takes to protect her and is she willing to lose part of herself to mate with him? I really liked the world building and felt that each character was well described and developed. I always love the idea of fated mates, especially when they end in HEA’s. Izzy and Rye’s relationship wasn’t instant and she did have her doubts about mating him, but it was romantic and they definitely had chemistry with one another. This story was filled with angst, romance, and a stalker that kept me hooked until the very end!
Michael did a great job with this narration! He used different voices for each character, his voice flowed well between each one, and his female voices were very easy to listen to.

When I think of how to summarise this book, one thing sticks out above everything else.

    Women must Sacrifice for Love.
    Men are Rewarded for it.

That’s the real root of the problems with the book.

Izzy gets Protection out of the relationship.
What’s-his-name, Ryerson, gets status, a homemaker, sex whenever he wants - vanilla as all heck, btw - but Izzy gets… protection. Okay, and semi-decent orgasms.

What more could a girl want? *facepalm*

Cute tale about a wolf shifter, a witch, and how they fall in love.

A town full of humans, wolf shifters, bear shifters, witches, and wicked changing in the mountain woods makes for an interesting setting. Add in the son of the alpha falling in love with one of the witches who has just returned home after four years in training and you get a good story, add a changling determined to steal that same woman and you get everything in a very good story.
