    Did you ever wonder what it was like in Japan after its defeat in WW II? So here we are in Japan in 1947. Our main character, an older man and an artist, lost his wife in a stray bomb that also destroyed much of his home, and he also lost his only son in the war. But he still has two daughters; one married with a son, and one trying to get married, but she’s getting a bit old for that time and culture; she’s past her mid-20’s.

    Japan was occupied by the United States, of course, and we imposed our systems on them; everything from our politics to baseball. Some Japanese adopted the American values wholeheartedly. His grandson, fascinated by the Lone Ranger and Popeye, exemplifies this, as well as (eventually) his two sons-in-law, both 80-hour-work-week type corporate guys. Others see the country run by greedy businessmen and their political lackeys, and conspire to bring back the old ways and even the Emperor.

    There is growing urban poverty in Japan not just from the devastation but from the wave or migrants from rural areas flooding the cities. The clash of cultures is shown by this passage: “[The hotel] had been amongst the most pleasant of the Western-style hotel in the city; these days, though, the management had taken to decorating the rooms in a somewhat vulgar manner – intended, no doubt, to strike the American clientele with whom the place is popular as being charmingly ‘Japanese.’”

    The main character was a teacher and an artist commissioned to draw pro-war posters – are people turning against him? When he hears of the ritual suicide of a musician who composed pro-war marches he really starts to re-think his life. Were their military and political leaders brave or stupid? Did their leaders mislead the people or did they fight for their glory? He is forced to confront his role in the war.

    In Japanese culture at the time, the families of potential marriage partners “investigate” each other families. Last year the younger daughter’s engagement was broken off. No one knows why but the elderly man becomes concerned and starts going around to old friends whom he knows will be contacted in future investigations. We begin to see what his old life was like; his past artistic rivalries, triumphs and failures. A theme is the teacher-mentor (sensei) with his disciples and the inevitable breaking away, which may or may not be amicable. A lot of it is an old man’s talk over sake of bygone places and people.

    The retired artist has it both ways --- he talks humbly but secretly thinks a lot of himself and has a knack for getting others to sing his praises for him. But, he also apparently has a lot of hazy memories where his recounting of events differs from that of his daughters. Is he getting alzheimer’s? Of course they don’t dare disagree directly with him, but it goes like this: “Honorable Father, with all due respect, in many of these things you say we think you are full of crap.”

    (This occurs to me: Many Japanese have an obsessive attraction to Anne of Green Gables; many even come each year to the tourist venue at Canada’s Prince Edward Island to get married. Is a part of this due to the audacious mouthiness of Anne in such a culture of constraint?

    The floating world of the title is the “pleasure districts;” a main one downtown and several smaller neighborhood ones scattered through the city. “…one could get drunk there with pride and dignity.” Pleasure, geishas, gambling, drink, theater; all for men only, of course. “The best things are put together of a night and vanish in the morning.” His artistic training was in a school that painted that world – reminiscent of Toulouse-Lautrec. We also learn odds and ends about Japanese art; for example, the traditional device of expressing emotion through the textiles a woman is wearing rather than through the look on her face.

    Kazuo Ishiguro, the author, was born in Nagasaki in 1954, but when he was five his parents moved to England, where he was educated, so he is considered a British author. Floating World was his second novel, but Ishiguro is perhaps best known for The Remains of the Day, which won the 1989 Booker Prize. I highly recommend this book.

    Rereading this novel I felt that the award of the 2017 Nobel prize for Literature to Ishiguro was a very safe choice.

    In one way Ishiguro's books are not very interesting, the narrator might be unreliable or limited, there is a concern for memory and the role of a creative intelligence in understanding and reinterpreting the past, there are issues of guilt and responsibility, and love. And one can find these elements in book after book. But he is deft and clever, a safe choice for the nobel prize, his stories might even invite a careful reconsideration of the award decisions and the motivations of Alfred Nobel.

    At a certain point reading I was almost hurt to acknowledge that the book was only 206 pages long, how could that be, the sense of the mental space that the book demands of the reader is far greater, not in an obnoxious way, no he is an insidious writer, one doesn't notice the soft mist rising from the pages, one can not discern the moment that one becomes lost on a familiar path.

    Putting down the book and letting the mind wander and wonder a bit images seem open to continual reinterpretation, the reader mirrors the narrator trying to find some sense in the situation, but perhaps I must not take my mind's work too seriously the title is An artist of the Floating World, the floating world was the ephemeral existence of bars, of professional entertainers, boozy talk and dim, cosy lighting, certain artists attempted to capture the fleeting emotions and atmosphere perhaps the melancholy of a prostitute and her transitory beauty, as it happens the narrator was not an Artist of the Floating World, but his Master was, the narrator at some point turns his back on that in favour of painting posters promoting nationalism and expansionism, Japan's place as Imperial super power over Asia.

    a man who aspires to rise above the mediocre, to be something more than ordinary, surely deserves admiration, even if in the end he fails and loses a fortune on account of his ambitions (p.134)

    The novel is divided into four unequal sections, each identified with a little time stamp, from October 1948 to June 1950. So one can see that the bright world of Imperialism, has turned out to be brittle and itself was a kind of floating world, melancholy in retrospect, the war dead haunt the pages, and when not those who died then the guilt and culpability of the survivors. Bright suicides slice into the narrative, of company directors, of a composer of militant songs, might it be the narrator's duty to apologise in such a manner and to so accept his share of responsibility, and if so responsibility for what precisely?

    'But these are the men who led the country astray, sir. Surely, it's only right they should acknowledge their responsibility. It's a cowardice that these men refuse to admit to their mistakes. And when those mistakes were made on behalf of the whole country, why then it must be the greatest cowardice of all' (p.56)

    The smell of burning wafts in, two, three times, finally the burning after air raids, but and this is the thing with his writing the smell carries us back to earlier instances of burning, of another's artist's anti-war work, of the narrator's own childhood drawings by his father, were might we begin and end the chains of responsibility and causality? Burning suggests not so much the possibility of the roads not taken, but of potential lives that were absolutely and decisively closed off for the narrator, but maybe this too is a way of subtly avoiding responsibility?

    In any case, there is surely no great shame in mistakes made in the best of faith. It is surely a thing far more shameful to be unable or unwilling to acknowledge them (p.125)

    Can we even be certain about the harm we have caused, and when we have can we expiate that harm, do penance in some meaningful way? Can we talk about it to the next generation? And to the next?

    The narrator takes his grandson to the cinema to watch Godzilla, the grandson projects his fears on to his aunt and shows bravado - the boy doth protest too much - by laughing at the cinema poster, but in the darkness he has at age seven, enough self knowledge to sit with his raincoat over his head. Has his grandfather gone through life with his own raincoat over his head, is throwing a raincoat over one's head and ignoring the Godzilla in the room, the best way in fact of dealing with the immediate past when perhaps everybody was guilty and at the end of the day appropriate marriages still have to be arranged between the young people, and the old men have to feed the carp?

    The Chrysanthemum and the Sword in the shade for me.

    This impressive novel set in the aftermath of WWII in Japan. Ishiguro creates a sense of stillness and normalcy around his narrator who comes across as an elderly but genial artist. Things happen around the narrator that seem inexplicable - the breakdown of his younger daughter's engagement, the loss of long-standing friendships.

    The outside world seems oddly strange. But as the narrator reflects on his life and his current troubles as readers we slowly begin to realise that the narrator's experiences are entirely explicable since slowly the extent of his committed engagement both personally and as an artist in the politics and ideology of pre-1945 Japan becomes clear.

    Second reading. The gist of this novel is the narrator's culpability for his patriotic actions during the war with the U.S. Set in a suburb of Tokyo during the American occupation, the narrator, Masuji Ono, is now surrounded by those who blame him for Japan's disastrous gamble on war and those like himself. Ono's generation was that of the old men cheerleading for war. And there can be no question about his complicity. In his youth he trained as an artist of the demimonde or "floating world," but turned to graphic propaganda during the war. His work was responsible for motivating untold thousands of young Japanese men to throw their lives away. Here's the rub though: Ono in the end was nothing more than a patriot. I agree that nationalism is abhorrent and that he was on the wrong side of history. But really it was Ono's misfortune, as it was Japan's, to be so catastrophically led. It strikes me as absurd that those around him berate and belittle him. There is even the suggestion by his eldest daughter that he do the honorable thing and commit seppuku, (literally, "stomach cutting"), as a means of cleansing the family name and clearing the way for the younger daughter's marriage negotiations. Reading the book I was reminded of how U.S. soldiers were treated when they returned from Vietnam. Ono was a combatant, no question. But it's really those around him him who've changed since the defeat, not Ono himself.

    I believe Ishiguru's model here may have been Yasunari Kawabata, the Japanese Nobelist. An Artist of the Floating World reminds me in some ways of Kawabata's
    The Old Capital. I wish I had more time to compare and contrast.

    An Auction of Prestige

    Harold Bloom in his 1975 book A Map of Misreading recast literary history as a record of the struggle between the “son” and his literary “father” (it has frequently been pointed out that Bloom is more than a bit sexist in his expression). Through a Kabbalah-like misinterpretation of one’s literary forebears, Bloom believed, a writer both builds on and destroys the work he admires most. This provokes a sort of anxiety in the writer, a struggle of wit and language with one’s mentors which results in both creative new work, and a re-creation of the old.

    Ishiguro’s book is an example of the process, extended to fine art and from the perspective of the mentor being misinterpreted. The fact that the book is set in the very restricted cultural location and time of Japan in the immediate post-war years seems, paradoxically, to generalise Bloom’s idea - not just to painting but also to the broader culture in which artistic effort is embedded.

    Masuji Ono is an artist of his time, a man of tradition and set ways, a man of polite formalities, and devoted to the importance of history; but also to hard drinking and male loyalties. He has a patriarchal view of society which, although more liberal than his parents’, nonetheless borders on the misogynistic. Like almost all Japanese of the period, he was a nationalist who responded to the war and its aims enthusiastically.

    The physical losses resulting from the war are of course traumatic. Masuji’s son and wife have been killed; his house damaged and his neighbourhood destroyed. But the spiritual trauma proves just as distressing. From being a pillar of the artistic community, he is now not simply old but old hat. Western mores are undermining traditions and family relationships as well as artistic fashions. His pre-war loyalties are now suspect.

    The central event of the story, as in Masuji Ibuse’s Black Rain, is the betrothal of his daughter. Marriage is still a highly formalised and ‘negotiated’ affair. Yet these negotiations take place in a world that has changed radically and it is unclear if either his parental skills or his art are adequate to their respective tasks. In Black Rain the issue is the physical purity of a woman after exposure to radiation from an atomic blast. In Ishiguro’s narrative the issue is also one of purity, but of a much more subtle familial purity involving Masuji’s war-time activities. In both cases the opinions of others must be investigated minutely in order to reach a settlement.

    According to Bloom, in a very Freudian manner the artistic son, by working through his own anxiety, gives birth to his father, or more accurately a re-birth in a new cultural oeuvre. This involves the son overcoming both the history of respect and the resentment (they go together) for the father. But for Ishiguro this process also demands an awareness by the father of his past dominance and faults inflicted upon the son and a recognition of a need for forgiveness. For Ishiguro, the son and father give birth to one another simultaneously through a sort of inverted auction of prestige - only by subverting one's reputation and personal pride to those of the other is creative reconciliation possible.

    This dynamic applies as much to generations as to individuals. As a by-product, it removes art entirely from the domain of economics, that is, of self-interest. Ishiguro suggests that this process of inter-generational reconciliation is what makes true art. It is a process that unites not just artists but an entire culture, creating not just solidarity but also an openness to the new and foreign. This is the way in which art transcends the eponymous floating world of transient appearance, fashion, and reputation.

    I have no idea whether Ishiguro is familiar with Bloom’s theory of literary development. But, if so, he certainly has re-invented that theory by appropriately misreading it in this captivating book.

    It's hard to be humble when you're so great used to be the words on a spoon rest in my mother's kitchen, but they are oddly appropriate in relation to the narrator as well.

    Now the question is, is Stevens from
    The Remains of the Day the Ono 2.0 (new and improved), or is it a case of the original always being better, this one having been published first? Both narrators are very prim, and proud, precise with their words--this may just be Ishiguro--and yearning for the past while defending what took place there.

    While this book is undoubtedly similar to Remains, I found Japan to be a much more interesting and evocative setting, which is to be expected. I've watched too much Downton Abbey for the English Country House to really present anything new, though the English countryside and village pubs always make me feel a certain kind of way. My exposure to Japan has been more limited, and what an introduction it has been.

    Ishiguro is at his absolute best when he is exploring pain. He takes mundane characters, ordinary people, and demonstrates how the present is perpetually pervaded by the past.

    Memories shape us and, in some ways, define who we are. There is no moving away from them, no matter how hard we might try. And that’s what makes most of his stories so compelling, the human struggle is something he evokes in all its bitterness; yet, here he failed.

    Normally when I pick up one of his novels I am drawn straight into the narrative immediately. I can’t think of a time (other than this book) where I wasn’t immediately invested. I don’t always appreciate the outcome of his stories, Never Let Me Go for example, though I have always been gripped by his words very early on. Here there was just a certain lack of plot or any sense of direction. Had I picked this book up without knowing who had written it, I would never have guessed it was Ishiguro.

    A retired painter is looking back at his life. He is moping in his home and doesn’t spend much time trying to shape the present, as such the story suffers. It is slow, monotonous and rather colourless. He has no passion for his life or his family. He is just existing rather than living. He is the family patriarch, though his family, a situation quite unusual by the standards of Japanese culture, treat him like a little child. He has nothing left. No life. No spark. No energy. All of which reflects in the dry narrative. He just seems to get on with life because he has to (though there is nothing in his story to suggest a reason for such a resignation.)

    Perhaps I expect too much from Ishiguro. I’ve read his later works and I know how fantastic he is at writing. This is one of his earlier books, and of course it would not display the same sense of skill, but I do expect certain things. A Pale View of Hills was his first book, and although it was far from perfect, it was far more developed than this. The characters were intriguing and the plot was actually going places. This was the exact opposite. It has nothing and I can only rate it very low.

    So this is a book by a writer who can do so much better. I would not recommend picking it up and instead go for When We Were Orphans or The Remains of the Day.

    الفن عندما يحمل رسالة الى شعب ما. يحاول المؤلف في أعقاب استسلام اليابان بعد الحرب العالمية الثانية. رسم صورة لمجتمع اليابان بعد الاحداث التي أدت الى تدمير البلاد. والعودة الى الوراء لمحاسبة الذين كان لهم التأثير على ما حدث وَقّاد البلاد الى هذا الدمار. ربما لم يكن تأثير الرسامون واضحا كما هو تأثير رجال السياسة والأعمال والعسكريين، رغم انهم شاركوا بمجهود وافر في رسم الروح التي سادت في ذلك الوقت.

    من خلال العودة بالذاكرة والتقاط الاحداث والمناقشات مع الفنانين المعلمين والزملاء يعبر بصورة رائعة عن هذه الروح حيث تم تكريم الفنان بجميع الأوسمة في تلك ألفترة. ولكن هذا العمل اصبح وصمة عار بعد الهزيمة. ولكن فنانا يلوم من اقدم على الانتحار حراء هذه الاعمال فيكفي الاعتذار.

    ومن خلال تدابير الزواج لابنته الصغرى يوضح بشكل رائع عن تأثير هذه الاعمال حيث كانت سببا في فشل ترتيبات الزواج الاولى، ولكنه تنازل عن كبرياءه لعمل ترتيبات مع أصدقاءه القدامى لمدحه امام عائلة زوجته المقبله.

    اخر الرواية يركز على ان مستقبل اليابان الان اصبح واعدا ورائعا بحماس الشباب ونشاطهم ثم يجد الاعذار انه رغم الأخطاء السابقة فقد كانت روحا سائدة لمجتمع كامل وليس استثناءا فقد كان فنانا لعالم عائم وهو عام وسبح مع التيار. وانه لولا هذه الأخطاء لما تم تصحيح المسار ولما أصبحت بلده بهذه المكانة.

    An Artist of the Floating World (1986) is a novel by Nobel Prize-winning British author Kazuo Ishiguro.

    It is set in post-World War II Japan, and is narrated by Masuji Ono, an ageing painter, who looks back on his life, and how he has lived it.

    He notices how his once great reputation has faltered since the war, and how attitudes towards him, and his paintings have changed.

    The chief conflict deals with Ono's need to accept responsibility for his past actions, and in the expostulation to find a path to peace, in his good will for the young white collar workers on the streets at lunch break. The novel also deals with the role of people in a rapidly changing environment.

    If you've already read
    The Remains of the Day, chances are your enjoyment of An Artist of the Floating World will be greatly curtailed. And that is the sheer tragedy of this book.

    Replace Stevens with Masuji Ono. Replace a tottering England with a war-ravaged, financially unstable Japan and insert Ishiguro's penchant for allegory. And TADA you have An Artist of the Floating World.

    This book had potential to be a very emotionally charged commentary on a nation rebuilding itself from its charred (atomic-bombed) remains and reflecting on the flawed ideologies of its notorious past.
    But instead it felt like a curious combination of The Remains of the Day and
    A Pale View Of Hills with little improvisation thrown in.

    If in TRotD, Stevens laments living a life devoted to serving a Nazi-sympathizing, Jew-hating Lord with unquestioning loyalty, in AAotFW, Ono san experiences feelings of profound guilt for having created paintings supporting the war and Imperial jingoism. We see Ono repeatedly trying to convince himself that his ideals were not at fault and he only did what his feelings of patriotism (obviously misguided) inspired him to, at the time.
    But at the fag end of the narrative, Ono comes to terms with his 'mistakes' and even ends up offering an unsolicited apology to his daughter's father-in-law at her miai ('marriage interview session' in Japanese).

    Translation:- Ishiguro virtually makes Japan get down on its knees and apologize to the world for all its crimes against humanity. The evanescent night life of the pleasure district that Ono san uses as a theme for his paintings is actually a symbol of a 'floating', hesitant Japan about to turn over a new leaf.

    I cannot exactly put my finger on the things I did not find particularly appealing about this book. Maybe it's the matter-of-fact tone of Ono's narrative voice which will tend to annoy the reader at some point. Maybe it's the lack of a shadow of grief or an air of melancholy that pervaded the atmosphere of TRotD and A Pale View of Hills. Maybe it's the glaring similarities with TRotD. Or maybe it's the Booker-nominated writer Tan Twan Eng saying in an interview how he reads this book at least once every year which caused me to have really high expectations.
    I had assumed, a book ought to have created an exceptionally powerful impact for it to be Eng's all-time-favorite.

    But I guess as a Malaysian national, he must have strong sentiments associated with any book that so much as touches upon the topic of Japan's shameful past as colonial master of most of east/south-east Asia.

    So my advice for the uninitiated will be:- Read Ishiguro's works in order or at least read this one before reading The Remains of the Day.

    An Artist of the Floating World is a nice pleasant read. Although Ishiguro had not lived through this period and lives in England, he evokes the languid rhythms of life in post-war Japan with panache. His protagonist addresses the reader in the second person over the entire book, telling us of his career as a propagandistic artist of pre-war Imperial Japan and his retirement. There is a marked similarity between Oji and the protagonist of The Remains of the Day, in that each had acted in morally ambiguous ways based on belief and their actions indirectly led to the atrocities of WWII in the two different theaters of Europe and Asia.

    Ishiguro invokes the Edo period of Tokyo (although the city is never named directly) and the destruction of the pleasure district in rounded, sensual tones just as the art of Ukiyo-E did. The protagonist was, in fact, trained as a traditional painter before being seduced by dreams of "modern" Japan led him to political painting. This had an adverse affect on his life - particularly his relationships after the war. The image on page 77 of the painter seeing his old protege Kuroda in the ruins of the post-war city and how "a truck going by between [them], full of building workers" is symbolic of this vast distance that his political stance put between him and his former master and students.

    This is an interesting and well-written book and if you are interested in this period, check out Kafu the Scribbler by Siedensticker which is about a real Japanese writer that would have been similar to Mori-san in the book.

    And all the dialogue in the entire book plus a great deal of the mournful meanderings that is the rest of it is like this. So this short book does need some patience. It will be hard for a modern reader not to be doing some furious eyerolling, pencil tapping and/or knee twitching during the reading of this book.

    Oh, and there is a plot, I guess, but you’ll have to find it with a magnifying glass and get an expert to check if it really can be classed as a plot.

    And plus, this book, as every review rightly points out, is THE EXACT SAME STORY as his very next novel The Remains of the Day which is a stone classic and way better than this one. (The story being that old farts after World War Two uneasily contemplate being on the wrong side during the war.)

    If you like the sound of all this, give it a whirl. I hope I have not put you off.

    There's such much drama in nothing at all! That's the genius of Ishiguro: here and in his masterpiece
    Remains of the Day, the actual plot is that nothing happens, and it's fuckin' gripping.

    Masuji Ono is an artist. During World War II he ended up on the wrong team; he arted up some propaganda, and now that Japan's lost the war he is embarrassing. His reputation has crashed. Maybe his daughter's impending marriage will be called off, if the family discovers some of his disgraceful former attitudes. He wonders. His other daughter throws passive aggressive shade at him.

    He's an unreliable narrator, another thing in common with Remains. Not a big flashy unreliable narrator, like "I was the killer all along!" It's more delicate, and Ishiguro is brilliant at this, quietly insinuating that the words on your page shouldn't be trusted. Ono's unreliable the same way that you are an unreliable narrator of your own life. You sometimes get it wrong. You've been better or worse than you thought. I mean, you, particularly, you've definitely been better, you're great. Certain other people have, frankly, been dicks.

    Ono has been a dick. How much of a dick? He meanders as he narrates, jumping around, prewar, war, postwar. In the end... Nothing.

    Ono was an artist of the floating, lantern-lit world of prostitutes. One imagines the flickering light playing tricks with details. Everything is soft, deceptive. You miss a nuance here and there. The Japanese word is ukiyo, "floating world," and it was
    a whole Japanese genre going back centuries. Here's the famous artist Utamaro, from around 1700:

    But ukiyo can apparently also be translated as "sad, troublesome world." So Ono painted geishas and, later, war propaganda.

    One of the things about moral relativism - the idea that one can't be guilty if lots of others are guilty too - is that history calls bullshit. If you pick the wrong team now, you'll reckon with it later. Nobody sees themselves as the villain of the story! But villains there are, and unreliable narrators, too. Someone has their own story wrong. Someone is a dick.

    It’s hard to appreciate the beauty of a world when one doubts its very validity

    Kazuo Ishiguro’s
    An Artist of the Floating World for my bookclub and the first chapter struck me as being really skillful, capturing all of the themes of the novel in just 28 pages. We follow a old man arranging the marriage of his daughter. His wife and son have died in the war and he himself is far from blameless we learn from side glances in his history while he goes about his day to day business in post-war Japan. The style is very chatty and conversational, quite plain on a sentence level.

    We have some false modesty, sexism and the West being embedded on the grandson of our narrator, and reflections on old and new Japan, resembled in the demeanour of his daughters. In a way it feels constructed and a bit insincere, but at the same time completely realistic for Ono to think in such a manner to himself and the reader is pulled into his perspective. The trick of creating a layered and complex character who makes bad choices but for whom we can still cheer as readers is pulled in a perfect manner by the way Ishiguro shows Ono his family life.

    Because despite the mirrors of events from his childhood, to experiences with his tutors to him doing the same, there are even worse things Ono is implied to have done to his pupil. The perspective of the losers of history, the people who turned out to be rooting for the wrong side, is balanced and in a fascinating way portrayed by Ishiguro.

    The destruction and desolation of after war Japan with a lone cafe in a field of rubble as mental image is very powerful and remembered me of his debut novel. Compared to
    A Pale View of Hills the strange repeating of sentences when characters talk to each other is fortunately less prominent.

    Finally what struck me was the poverty and misery (coupled to more than a bit of opportunism) that led to the narrator falling for the promise order of fascism. The History of Japan podcast recently did a two parter (links included below) on the corruption and political instability of pre World War Two Japan, that make the fragility of democracy better understandable. Well recommended for anyone interesting in more on the fascinating period Ishiguro set this novel in!

    Kazuo Ishiguro was born in 1954 post-war Nagasaki and moved to Britain with his parents at the age of five. Raised by his grandmother, literate in the language and culture, he had returned to Japan three years before this 1986 novel. Doubts if an essentially British author could authentically depict Japan didn't prove a problem. The story is told during 1948 to 1950 in a bombed out suburb of Tokyo. The dialogue is set within the narrator's memories and a small group of family and friends.

    Masuji Ono is a retired artist living in a large traditional home with his younger daughter. The house was damaged in the war, killing his wife, and his son had died in China. His elder daughter comes to visit with his grandson. The young boy is excited to see a new Godzilla movie, metaphor for the war and nuclear radiation. Masuji frequents a local tavern, the lone outpost of a past flourishing pleasure district. He reminisces about his once highly regarded status in a world now disappeared.

    Masuji had been part of a painting school that revered 'The Floating World'. During the Tokugawa Shogunate it was a red light district, the subject of writers and artists depicting geisha, kabuki, sumo and samurai who inhabited it. After 1868 the Meiji Restoration began modernization of Japan. Hirohito was Emperor in 1926 and civilian control of the military ended in 1932. Masuji, influenced by the nationalist fervor of the time, is convinced Japan should stake a claim as an expanding empire.

    Masuji's artwork evolves from tourist kitsch to propaganda posters. He regales his students with jingoist toasts and is flattered by their sake fueled praise. He becomes a cultural advisor to the Committee of Unpatriotic Activities. After 1945 youth are skeptical of elders who had led them to war. In the American occupation he is blacklisted from teaching for his imperialist politics. There are hints the past has hindered his daughter's marriage hopes, and the family is suspicious of his current views.

    Masuji reflects, near the end of the story, while he and other imperial supporters failed to win the war and take over Asia, they had done things 'in the best of faith' with the courage to have 'put their convictions to the test'. When the war is finished he sees western style offices and apartments rise around him. His son-in-laws work for big manufacturing and construction firms that mimic American business. Still unreformed, he is a believable character. Ishiguro won the Nobel Prize in 2017.

    I thought Kazuo Ishiguro was not one of the authors who do not rewrite themselves. This book proved me wrong. He is like many other authors who write at least two novels with similar plot, themes and even characters. They just change some aspects of the novel like settings, climax or maybe the names of the places and people. I was disappointed but the disappointment was not enough for me to give this 1 star because the book still has all those Ishiguro's trademarks that made me fall in love with his books: subtle, delicate and intricate writing. Still a worthy of money and time especially for his diehard fans.

    You see, I have read three of Ishiguro's works prior to this. All of them I really liked (4 stars):
    The Remains of the Day (1989),
    Never Let Me Go (2005) and
    Nocturnes: Five Stories of Music and Nightfall (2009). Each of them are totally different from one another. So, I thought he does not re write himself. I know that this book, An Artist of the Floating World was first published 3 years before The Remains of Day but I read this later. Had I read this first, I would have liked this and would have hated Remains.

    In my opinion, the similarities are obvious but there are also some minor differences. However, the plot is still too close to each other compared to let me say, Never Let Me Go. In this book, Masuji Ono is an aging painter and has been a respected artist in Japan. He worked hard for his craft and gained fame and honor from it. However, during the war, he became a police enforcer, something that was not really honorable. Now, that he is old, he wants everything that he will leave to be in order including the marriage of his daughter Noriko. In the traditional Japan, the parents look for potential husbands for their daughter. The process goes on some defined stages including some background checks on the family of the woman.

    In Remains, the aging man is Mr. Stevens who is an excellent butler. He works hard as a butler as he believes that is the equivalent of "human dignity." However, his former boss had a shady dealing as Nazi informer during the war and it affected the stature of his otherwise prestigious Darlington Hall. Stevens has a co-worker, Miss Kenton, with whom he almost had a relationship. In their twilight years, they are both asking the "what-ifs", i.e., what if Mr. Stevens courted Miss Kenton, what if Miss Kenton said yes, what if they got married, etc.

    Both protagonists are male in their retirement years. Both have worked hard in their crafts. Both have some kind of regrets due to their own doing. Their own mistakes. Both are trying to correct those mistakes before they die. However, I will not tell you if they succeeded as that would be too much of a spoiler.

    The only differences: One is set in Japan, the other one in Britain. However, both of them are after WWII. Ono's mistake is his mainly own doing while Mr. Stevens is mainly his own undoing. He did not court Kenton even if he felt something for her. Also, Ishiguro was so brilliant that the voices of Ono and Mr. Stevens are totally different from each other. Both of these novels employ first-person narration and both narrators are unreliable and the reader has to take almost the whole book to fully figure this out. Each narrator, however, has their own distinct "voices" that is truly admirable because Ishiguro left Japan when he was 5 years old but he still was able to vividly capture the Japanese scenery, culture, tradition and the manner of speaking. The examples of this are when younger people address the aging Ono with Sensei and his daughter referring to him as third person "Would my father be kind enough to consider..." instead of how we say this nowadays ""Would you consider..."

    This was the reason why I was hesitant to read another Ishiguro book. I was afraid that I would not like the next book and I would be forced to drop Ishiguro from the list of my favorite authors. I still have respect for him but oh yes, sadly, this book eroded his pedestal in my mind.

    I would like to call the attention of my friends who rave about Ishiguro because they've read "Remains" and "Never Let Me Go" and so they think that Ishiguro does not re-write himself. He does. In my opinion, at least.

    This is a quiet but accomplished novel about post-war Japan; of reconciling both the state and individual of the modern world, with the crimes and convictions of the past. The novel is a thematic precursor to Remains of the Day, published three years later, which similarly uses an unreliable first-person narrative to explore what it means to have lived an honourable life. An Artist of the Floating World is a far more subdued novel, with a greater specific cultural focus, and as a result, its themes are perhaps a little less universal.

    Set in Japan right after WW2, Masuji Ono, a retired artist, looks back on his life and career from when he was a celebrated painter in the pre-war years to the social pariah he now is in the post-war years thanks to his ties to imperialist Japan. Doesn’t sound like much of a story, does it? It isn’t!

    I remember really enjoying Kazuo Ishiguro’s The Remains of the Day, so much so that I read it twice, so I don’t know why I’ve never read anything else by the guy. I decided to pick up the novel he wrote before Remains, An Artist of the Floating World, and found it to be, unfortunately, a tediously slow-moving load of nothing.

    So, post-war Japan had a real problem with pre-war Japan, namely with the imperialist jingoism that got them wrapped up in what became World War 2, with the survivors actively rejecting all aspects of “traditional” Japan and embracing the occupying Americans’ values and culture instead. Ono isn’t happy with that. Zzz…

    I kept hoping for something - anything! - to happen and it never did. There’s a “plot” involving Ono trying to marry off his youngest daughter but having trouble because of his previous associations with imperialist Japan. I couldn’t have cared less!

    I was looking forward to seeing what terrible stuff he’d painted to make him such a notorious figure except Ishiguro completely cops out on that point by never revealing it. All we’re told is that it’s “unpatriotic” and that Ono is a “traitor”. Booo!

    You can see Ishiguro flirting with the idea of the unreliable narrator that he would go on to perfect in Mr Stevens from The Remains of the Day but here the literary device is merely toyed with lightly to little effect.

    I like the title of this book and found out that the “Floating World” was a period of time in Japan’s history noted for its decadence and celebration of transient pleasures, so I guess Ishiguro’s drawing comparisons to that era with either pre or post-war Japan? I don’t know and I’m not really interested enough to think about it. But that vagueness is indicative of the book as a whole.

    It’s a well-written novel and gives you a strong sense of the mood of post-war Japan but it’s not enough for me. An Artist of the Floating World is so completely lacking in anything substantial that it failed to leave any kind of impression. A very disappointing, weak effort - I’d recommend checking out The Remains of the Day for a far better Ishiguro read instead.

    STYLE :

    Throughout, you are following Ono's loose thoughts about himself, his family, his pupils, the past.
    In a sense, the title 'An Artist of the Floating World' is somewhat self-explanatory, as Ono is constantly drifting from one memory to another and back to the present (comparing his pupils with his former schoolmates, now his behaviour with master Mori and Kuroda's towards him, now places as they are and places as they were...).

    You get accustomed to a strange, oblique but lifelike way to look at things, sheding light on certain events, casting shadows on other parts. Also, the same as a millstone, this whole rambling rumination grinds away one shallow layer after another, until Ono is left with a more proper appreciation of his life (if not the bare core of events as they have happened in truth).

    What is left unsaid, innuendo, biting irony, double-entendres, is rendered in such a way that you can fancy you were attending family reunions, in the flesh.


    THEMES :

    The story begins as retired Ono tells us about his stately house and how, a modest man, he came to acquire it. Currently leading an uneventful life, Ono resolves to carry out an extensive survey of his life. He sets his course : to the depths.


    The Americanization of Japan

    This is October, 1948, and Japan is increasingly modelled after standards set by the United States, a country the youth and the younger generations look up to. Masuji Ono's grandson, wayward Ichiro, comes out as the embodiment of this fascination : he is a sucker for the Lone Ranger, Popeye Sailorman... On the contrary, he is not so much keen on the fearsome lizard Godzilla, often seen as an impersonation of Japan reborn as a mighty nation.

    In the aftermath of WW2, defeated Japan rebuilds painstakingly. The world goes its own way, eventually driving the most obdurate Japanese to take changes into account. That goes with a certain uneasiness about what is to become of the past.

    'Of course, of course. And I've no doubt your new leaders are the most capable of men. But tell me, Taro, don't you worry at times we might be a little too hasty in following the Americans? I would be the first to agree many of the old ways must now be erased for ever, but don't you think sometimes some good things are being thrown away with the bad? Indeed, sometimes Japan has come to look like a small child learning from a strange adult.' - p.185


    Masuji Ono remains unflinchingly attached to the past. He haunts the same garden, district and inn he used to visit 'in olden days'. Unfortunately, it amounts now to hanging out in the unaccountable ruins of a disfigured city :

    'Coming out of Mrs Kawakami's now, you could stand at her doorway and believe you have just been drinking at some outpost of civilization. All around, there is nothing but a desert of demolished rubble. Only the backs of several buildings far in the distance will remind you that you are not so far from the city centre. (...) So now that side of the street is nothing but ruble. No doubt the authorities have their plans, but it has been that way for three years. The rain collects in small puddles and grow stagnant amidst the broken brick. (...) The buildings on Mrs Kawakami's own side of the street have remained standing, but are unoccupied (...), a situation which makes her uncomfortable. If she became suddenly rich, she often tells us, she would buy up those properties and expand. In the meantime, she waits for someone to move into them; she would not mind if they became bars just like hers, anything provided she no longer had to live in the midst of a graveyard.' - P.26-27


    As you are being told about the good old days, you can sense embarassment, uneasiness and guilt emerging.

    'It’s hard to appreciate the beauty of a world when one doubts its very validity', and Ono feels an undermining uncertainty and underlying guilt as to his career choices during wartime. Chances are Ono portrays himself as something of an imposter, from page one.


    What becomes of legacy?

    Come peace, considering the fate of things past, left to rot or done away with, uprooted as a district no longer wanted, an elderly man will easily come to fear for himself as his own passing away draws near. Accordingly, Ono wants to secure his contribution in the world, and he ponders what to make out of it. This is a chief concern in this novel. What one owes to one's own past. An Artist of the Floating World is about faithfulness to models and masters, as it is about being faithful to the idea you hold about yourself.


    What it takes to assess yourself : Taking stock of change, rejecting it, embracing it.

    'They are some who would say it is people like myself who are responsible for the terrible things that happened to this nation of ours. As far as I'm concerned, I freely admit I made many mistakes. (...) My paintings, my teachings. As you see, Dr Saito, I admit this quite readily. All I can say is that at the time I acted in good faith. I believed in all sincerity I was achieving good for my fellow countrymen. But, as you see, I am now not afraid to admit I was mistaken.' - p.123-124

"

    Set in post world war II Japan, this beautiful little novel is Ishiguro doing his usual great job - the subtlety, the painting of something larger (atmosphere of a country in this case) and a narrator who knows how to forget (unlike that of 'The Sense of Ending' Ishiguro's narrators never forget anything substantial - just a few minor details like when something happened or exchange a few details). Even the non-chronological flow of prose is so brilliantly conversational.

    The title refers to the kind of life artists lead - away from social responsibility chasing after soft, beautiful things that become unreal in the daytime like pleasures from the district.

    ' Artists’, my father’s voice continued, ‘live in squalor and poverty. They inhabit a world which gives them every temptation to become weak-willed and depraved. Am I not right, Sachiko?’
    ‘Naturally. Yet perhaps there are one or two who are able to pursue an artistic career and yet avoid such pitfalls.'


    The novel is about the narrator's dilemma - of having to choose between avoiding those pitfalls and his artistic need to pursuit beauty

    An artist’s concern is to capture beauty wherever he finds it."

    And his life is full of oscillations between the two and thus the metaphor of bridge of hesitation on his way to pleasure district. Smooth. The novel starts at a point where the author is inclined to believe that people around him are of opinion that not only he tried being socially responsible but failed with devastating effects on the whole nation. And thus the need to look back at his own life. And the question - if an artist is just giving out as his or her message what is the spirit of people at the time, how much he or she can be blamed for leading them?
    The other themes I am too lazy to discuss.

    After reading Never Let Me Go, I swore that I would read more of Ishiguro's work. It was fate that I ran across An Artist of the Floating World at my Library. The novel isn't a particularly long one - coming in at a mere 206 pages. It was a breeze to get through.

    I'm noticing that with Ishiguro's narrators so far, the tone is very conversational. Throughout this book, the protagonist Masuji Ono, a retired artist, speaks intimately to the reader

    Throughout the book, Masuji Ono, the protagonist, speaks to the reader directly. Much like in real conversations, there are tangents and complete changes of topic.Masuji, a retired artist, often finds himself wanting to describe what happened with one of his daughters , but somehow takes us back to his days of art apprenticeship and the trials Japan faced during WWII. The conversational tone added to how quickly the book passed, for me,because the stories were very interesting and it felt odd to have to put the book down during his conversational recollection.

    I don't really know how to tell you what the book is about. Masuju is trying to make sure his second daughter is able to marry. In Japan, there is a process prior to the marriage where both families investigate one another to make sure that they are pleased with the history of the family. They go as far as to hire investigators for this process.Masuji is particularly worried for his daughter because the year before, the suitor's family backed out of the marriage without any good reason. His daughters hint that this may be because ofMasuji's past.

    The book is very slow to reveal what it is that could potentially be spoiling his daughter's chances at marriage - but the journey that leads you there is an altogether interesting one.Masuji's opinions, which he heavily showcased in his paintings during WWII, are no longer held by society. They are in fact looked down upon by society. In Japan, people fault you for your past.

    I enjoyed the parts of the book that directly related to his art. The stories of his daughters were secondary. As a young child, he enjoyed painting and knew he would not take on the family business like his father wanted. I felt sympathetic to Masuji's character. I'm very familiar with what it is like to have your career belittled by others. The form of training that was offered in Japan for aspiring artists at that time is so interesting to me. When I was younger, I attended an art school over the summer where we were encouraged to create our unique style. In Japan, you gained respect by mimicking the style of an already famous artist.

    This novel has a very under-stated message. It speaks of misunderstandings and the changing views of a society. Masuji Ono, represents the "older" generation of Japan, the old views of how things are. His daughter's husbands represent the new generation, the generation of "change" which misunderstands the past. This short novel is able to give you a snapshot of post-war Japan in all its melancholy state through the eyes of a jaded retired artist.

    Now that I've read what is arguably Nobel-winner Kazuo Ishiguro's most famous novel, 1989's The Remains of the Day, it was fascinating to go back and read the book he wrote right before it, 1986's An Artist of the Floating World, because at their hearts they're both about the same thing -- namely, milquetoast everyman characters living through the events of World War Two in the 1940s, who both unthinkingly adopted attitudes about the war that they naively thought made them good citizens, but only afterwards realized made them one of the millions that allowed for monstrous fascism to run unchecked in their countries at the time (in the case of Remains, in pre-war Britain, where a butler is forced to reconcile his experiences of working for a blue-blood lord who was a gleeful Nazi appeaser before the war officially began, and who thought it would be a great idea for the UK to ship all their Jews off to concentration camps too).

    The big difference here, though, is that the protagonist of Floating World is Japanese, a respected fine-art painter before the war who happily commits himself to propaganda posters during the conflict, then must learn how to live with his actions in a post-war world of Western influence, where the generation after him embrace cowboy movies and Coca-Cola, and bitterly blame him and his peers for causing the near-destruction of their nation to begin with. But the book is about more than that, too, alluded to by the novel's title; for "the floating world" refers not just to the
    style of delicate painting that our anti-villain Ono embraced before the war (just to then controversially dump it in favor of the
    bold art-deco look of war propaganda), but also as a slang term for the "red-light districts" that were a regular part of most cities in pre-war Europe and Asia, a sort of perpetual-twilight dreamland of drugs and sex where Ono and his friends spent their time before the war, drinking and arguing philosophy inside a bar that eventually became famous because of their association.

    That makes this book the usual bag of Ishiguro tricks like his others, as he very slyly examines subjects like groupthink, morality, loyalty and family, precisely by sliding up to the topics sideways before you've even had a chance to notice; but in other ways this makes the book very different than his most famous titles, in that this is also a very specific look at Japanese customs and rituals, from the strict mentor/apprentice approach to the arts that had an ironclad lock on their society's arts all the way into the 1960s, to the frustrations of a younger generation trying to corral their parents' wayward opinions within a society where it was still a deep taboo to raise one's voice in argument against an elder. After all, Ishiguro is famously a Japanese immigrant who has lived in England all his life, and it's my understanding that several of his first books are set in an Asia he only knew theoretically; he seems to have gotten that out of his system early in his career, in that all his later novels are thoroughly Western in approach and setting, but it still makes these early books fascinating to read and ponder.

    Although I can state with authority that I liked The Remains of the Day better -- Ishiguro simply handles the subject with more finesse and subtlety in that particular book, and sets it in an environment that Westerners are much more familiar with, making the subversion of its subject matter even more powerful -- anyone who is a fan of that book is strongly encouraged to read this unofficial companion volume too, a one-two punch that collectively is one of the most devastating looks at the rise of 20th century fascism ever written. Next up: 1995's The Unconsoled, which I've been warned is a sprawling, linguistically dense 500-page headscratcher that received almost all negative reviews when first published, but that has since been reappraised as one of the best British novels of the late 20th century. Should be interesting!

    Each time my eyelids bowed down to the devil of grave drowsiness, the concave depths displayed a lean, modest shadowy figure standing on the Bridge of Hesitation; the wrinkles on his forehead becoming deeper , trembling with culpability, wishing for Noriko’s miai to be an incessant success.
    The Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow">Jerome K Jerome was accurate with his analysis of the solitude of an idle mind bringing generous thoughts. There I was, nursing an acute bronchial cough cursing the fateful knitting needles for hampering my purling flair even as Masuji diffidently questioned Mr.Kuroda’s whereabouts to his surly assistant. How could a man be punished for something he believed in? How can skepticism prevail on man’s patriotic ideals when his loved ones too perished in the dreadful horror? Is the idea of patriotism merely seductive when one does not have to stand on the edge of its justification? “Ordinary men with no special gifts of insight, it was simply our misfortune to have been ordinary men during such times.”, that is what Mr. Mastuda asserted rubbishing Masuji’s contemplation of a culpable survival. The close knit life of ordinary men is anything but ordinary. The narrow area of existence magnifies the aspects of circumstantial actions. The wrongs do not get washed by the flow of vast oceanic waves but float amid the marshes of a pond. Isn’t ‘the lives of ordinary men’ restricted as the stagnant pond waters? The tight-knit communities in which he daily moves, the by-lanes, the alleys which witness his daily travels and those numerous heads that pop up at the windows every time he closes his door; absolutely nothing is inescapable in the life of an ordinary men. With such unusual vigilance how could his troubles then be marginal? Dignity and self-respect brings a sense of calmly happiness to the life of an ordinary man. With no monetary affluence or supremacy, ‘dignity’ seems the only path of his civil acceptance. In a world so constricted with flimsy lifelines of obstinate relationships, exile is a nightmarish death.


    ‘The validation of a war’; I dread debating this subject as my nerves tremble with utmost anger. A part of me appreciates the use of military powers in virulent situation of civil conundrum. And, then there is the other half that contests the legitimacy of the power usage in case of political egotistical fulfillment. Comprehension of any war literature is a chaotic process hindered by my faint heart. I have always nattily stayed away from any war related prose, especially the ordeal of soldiers or the aftermath of human lives. I may not know the tribulation of braving a war front or structuring a war graph, nevertheless I certainly know that is shameful to doubt the worthiness of valiant sacrifices. The anger that seethed when Suichi called the deaths of young Japanese soldiers wasteful appeased when he validated his disdain by questioning the prevailing injustice of seeing the ‘real culprits’ still alive and enjoying luxurious perks amid the brazenness of righteousness. “To my mind, that’s the greatest cowardice of all”. How true! Isn’t’ that a bitch! Ishiguro speaks the language of restless youths of many generations questioning the inequitable penalty of the war. The politicians, spiritual leaders, capitalist cliques waving their chameleonic flags of patriotism shy away from battling on their once beloved home ground. Why those clandestine escapes to safe havens when their own vile concoctions amalgamate in their own drinks? Why not brave the salient turmoil themselves, that these ‘benevolent guardians’ stir? Suichi admitting flaws of the nationalistic chimera, the misplaced self-respect and prevailing shamelessness veiled under a patriotic farce is a tale told by every life of a torn nation.


    Japan was a torn nation after the WWII, feelings ranging from compassions to abhorrence raced among the minds of those alive and trying to weave a better future in their displaced living. Those who once were applauded for their patriotic songs were now mercilessly beaten and whispers about selected betrayers flooded the atmospheric desolation. Masuji was among those who lived with ignominy finding getaways from his past leeched onto him like a hungry parasite. Masuji Ono may have once been the most revered artist of his time, but to me he is now a worried father of Noriko fearing the consequences of his past action being detrimental on his daughter’s future. Having lost his wife and son in the war, the only family Masuji had was his two daughters, how in the devil could he allow his condemnation of his war efforts hamper the bright prospects of his unmarried daughter. Masuji was no longer the influential artists of the Pre-war era; he was now an old feeble man who relied on old memories and occasion outing in the Midi-Hidari neighborhood for a pleasurable day; comprehending the wisdom behind the western influence in his grandson’s rearing

    Kazuo Ishiguro highlights the apprehension of a man in admitting his mistake in the fear of his denunciation; chronicled three years after the war. An Artist of the Floating world, the name Ishiguro chose for his novel, travels through magical serenades of flamboyantly lit streets of Midi-Hidari district, the hypnotic sways of delicate fingers playing amongst the elegant kimonos captured through beautiful brush strokes ,where an local artist reveled in his honorable dignity only to lose it and then gain it back again with grit and determination as there is certainly no shame in admitting one’s mistake made in the best faith because in a ‘changing world’ one is bound to stumble and falter because no one is perfect or a virtuous ‘sensei’.

    L'inglese Ishiguro (Nobel per la Letteratura 2017) ritorna letterariamente al Giappone, suo Paese d'origine, con questo breve romanzo bellissimo, ambientato negli anni del dopoguerra, con uno stile degno della grande letteratura.

    Benché solo trentenne al momento della stesura, egli riesce mirabilmente a calarsi nei panni dell'anziano pittore protagonista, celebrità negli anni '30 quando ammirava le opere "d'inflessibile lealtà a Sua Maestà l'Imperatore".

    Ora, nel Giappone sconfitto e americanizzato, i suoi dipinti "per il momento sono riposti altrove". E' per lui un momento di disgrazia.
    Persino in famiglia si è insinuato il sospetto : il genero ne prende le distanze, e afferma che in guerra "giovani coraggiosi sono morti per cause stupide, e i veri colpevoli sono ancora con noi" ; il nipotino viene addirittura incoraggiato a identificarsi coi modelli americani: coltiva il mito dei cowboy.

    Quando il nostro artista, nel progettare il matrimonio della figlia minore, capta il disagio d'imparentarsi con lui, vive un momento di profonda consapevolezza : "Vi sono un'indubbia soddisfazione e un'indubbia dignità nel riuscire a raggiungere un compromesso con gli errori compiuti nella propria vita. Comunque non sono una grande vergogna gli errori compiuti in perfetta buona fede. Certo è molto più vergognoso non potere o non volere riconoscerli".
    Ishiguro, da grande scrittore, lascia filtrare quello spiraglio di serenità che la saggezza, non solo orientale, ama realisticamente concedere.

    Perskaičiau, labai gera knyga, trečias mano Ishiguro. Kaip rašė Renata, jis artimesnis "Dienos likučiams", o ne "Neleisk man išeiti" - ne veltui parašytas 1986, dar net prieš likučius - ir tai gerai, sci-fi temos, man atrodo, jam netinka. (+ Smalsu bus paskaityti "Buried Giant", kuris chronologiškai dar vėlesnis nei "Neleisk".)

    "Pasaulis" neilgas, skaitosi greitai ir labai maloniai.

    Įspūdingi dalykai:
    1. Pasakotojas ir jo keistas statusas - ne objektyvus, ne skaidrus, gal labiau - neadekvatus aplinkai. Tai senyvas tapytojas, jau išėjęs į pensiją; pasakoja ir apie savo kasdienybę, ir truputį apie prisiminimus. Tas padaryta labai, LABAI gražiai: nėra dirbtinai paeiliui dėstoma jo gyvenimo istorija (to ir nereikia), atsiminimai netgi nėra įpinami ten, kur jų siužete akivaizdžiai reikia: pvz, matom, kad buvęs mokinys nekenčia tapytojo ir nenori su juo bendrauti, bet kodėl - pasakotojas nemato reikalo mums pasakoti, ir tik paskui, daug vėliau, papasakoja kažkokia kita proga. Kažkurioj apžvalgoj, atsimenu, jis buvo vadinamas nepatikimu pasakotoju - aš gal sakyčiau, kad jis kaip ir patikimas, tik neskaidrus, ne neutralus: ką jis pasakoja, kad maždaug "viskas gerai, aš toks fainas ir taip gerai su visais sutariu", visai čia pat pasirodo priešingai - jis kelia daug įtampos aplinkiniams. Ir tai įspūdinga: dažnai pirmo asmens pasakotojai būna arba nuliniai, maždaug kaip yra, taip sakau (a la "Petro imperatorė), arba protingesni už tave ir vedžiojantys tave už nosies (Nabokovo, Calvino pasakotojai, you name it). O šitas neturi jokio santykio su tavim, tiesiog neadekvačiai vertina tikrovę. Ir tai toks puikus paties žmogaus charakterizavimas, net nereikia ypatingų pastangų ar įvykių (nors knygoj jų yra) jo bjaurumui parodyti.

    2. Japoniškumas - aš nelabai ką žinau apie Japoniją ir jos papročius, tai man galima lengvai parduoti bet ką kaip egzotiką, bet šitas manieringumas, kuris buvo knygoje, - tikrai žavingas. Pradedant nuo visokių ritualų, pvz derybos dėl vestuvių: tėvai ieško dukros vestuvėms tarpinininkų, a la piršlių, paslaugų (siūloma mergina - bent jau abiem atvejais knygoje, - o ne vyrai atvažiuoja pas merginas siūlytis), paskui vaikino tėvai samdo detektyvus ir renka info apie merginos šeimą - ar nepriekaištinga reputacija :D (čia vis galvojau, kaip gerai, kad pas mus taip nėra, net initial checko nepraeičiau.....) O tada! Abi šeimos susirenka į "miai" - a la žvalgytuves, kažkur restorane valgo ir kalbasi, ir labai svarbu, kaip ten pasirodai, nes jei apsilopini - dealas nepaeina. Pvz, pasakotojo dukterį visi užpuolę egzaminuoja apie kompozitorius (o jai akivaizdžiai dzin ta muzika):

    ...Bet galbūt jūs ateitumėt man į pagalbą, panele Noriko. Argi jūs nemėgstate Bacho?
    - Bacho? - Akimirką mano duktė atrodė sutrikusi. Paskui nusišypsojo ir pasakė: - Taip, iš tiesų. Labai mėgstu.
    - A-a, pergalingai pasakė Taro [čia būsimas jaunikis], - mamai dabar teks šį tą permąstyti.
    - Mano sūnus niekus tauškia, panele Noriko. Aš niekada nekritikavau Bacho kūrybos apskritai. Tačiau sakykit, argi Šopenas ne iškalbingesnis, jei kalbėsime apie fortepijoną?
    - Iš tiesų, - atsakė Noriko.
    Tokie sausi atsakymai puikiai iliustruoja, kaip ji pasirodė per pirmąją vakaro dalį. (p. 125)


    O paties pasakotojo - kaip jis vertina riaušes mieste.
    Ir pats kalbos manieringumas, visai nepaslėpta agresija po mandagybėmis:

    - Tai, spėju, tėvelis ir apie savo tapybą visuomet būdavo teisus.
    - Noriko, šis pokalbis beprasmis. Be to, jeigu tau nepatinka, ką padariau sode, labai prašom eiti ir patvarkyti, kaip norėtum, kad būtų.
    - Tėvelis labai malonus. Bet kada gi man siūlote tuo užsiimti? Aš neturiu visos laisvos dienos, kaip tėvelis kad turi.
    - Ką tu turi galvoje, Noriko? Aš visą dieną buvau užsiėmęs. [...] Betgi šitas pokalbis beprasmis. Tavo mama bent nusišnekėdavo taip, kad mudu abu galėdavom iš to pasijuokti. (p. 114)

    Popietei baigiantis nusprendžiau, kad būtų išmintinga kiek praskaidrinti Noriko nuotaiką, ir būtent iš šių paskatų, jai einant pro valgomąjį, kur sėdėjau ir skaičiau, tačiau:
    - Neįtikėtina, Noriko, kaip tu gali visą dieną praleisti vien gražindamasi. Galima būtų pamanyti, čia jau pačios vestuvės.
    - O tėveliui labai būdinga šaipytis, bet paskui pačiam nebūti tinkamai susiruošus, - atkirto ji.
    - Aš ilgai netruksiu susiruošti, - atsakiau juokdamasis. - Galvoje netelpa, kad tu tam skiri ištisą dieną. (p. 121)

    Mano laiško tonas buvo draugiškas ir taikingas, taigi nusivyliau po kelių dienų sulaukęs šalto ir įžeidžiamai trumpo atsakymo:
    "Neturiu pagrindo manyti, kad iš mūsų susitikimo galėtume tikėtis kokios vertingos išeigos, - rašė mano buvęs mokinys. - Dėkoju už aną dieną jūsų apsilankymu parodytą mandagumą, bet nesijaučiu galintis ir toliau trukdyti jus, versdamas atlikti tokią pareigą." (p. 120-121)


    3. Meno ir menininko tema, menininko santykis su politika, menininko kūrybos angažuotumas, santykis tarp mokytojo ir mokinio... - daugybė temų, kurios savaime dažnai tampa dėmesio centru (plg Wajdos "Povaizdis", Matuszynskio "Paskutinė šeima" - filmai, bet apie tą patį), o čia išnyra tik fone. Bet tas fonas, paskui paaiškėja, nulėmė ir visą pasakotojo gyvenimą, ir jo blogą situaciją, iš kurios pasakojama (veiksmas vyksta Japonijoje pokariu, 1949-1950 m., o menininkas aiškiai per karą prisidirbęs, nes tapė angažuotus propagandinius paveikslus - bet tą tik suprantam iš užuominų). Negalėjau patikėt, kaip čia gražiai padaryta - be tragedijų, be didingų pasirinkimų, be kaltinimų sistemai, kuri privertė laisvą sielą jai paklusti ir išduoti savo principus...nope.

    4. SPOILER. Labai graži į pavadinimą iškelta pagrindinė knygos metafora: plūduriuojantis pasaulis - jaunystė ir tūsai:

    Geriausi dalykai, visada sakydavo jis, susideda iš nakties ir pranyksta rytui išaušus. Tai, ką žmonės vadina plūduriuojančiu pasauliu, Ono, Džisaburo mokėjo vertinti. (p. 156)

    Kai ruošiau tuos raižinius, buvau labai jaunas. Įtariu, kad nesugebėjau išaukštinti plūduriuojančio pasaulio dėl to, kad pats negalėjau prisiversti įtikėti jo verte. Jauni vyrai dažnai jaučia kaltę dėl malonumo, ir tikriausiai aš pats nebuvau kitoks. Spėju, tada maniau, kad leisti laiką tokiose vietose, švaistyti savo sugebėjimus aukštinant tokius neapčiuopiamus ir netvarius dalykus - laiko švaistymas, kad tai veikiau pagedimas. Sunku įvertinti pasaulio grožį, kai abejoji pačiu jo patikimumu. (p. 157)


    Driftinimas, estetika ir dramblio kaulo bokštas - tipo tame turi gyventi menininkas. Ir tada, grįžtant prie meno temos, - pasakotojas pasirenka, kad gyvenime yra svarbesnių dalykų negu estetika, ir... reikia suprasti, kad tada ir nutinka jo sisteminiai, politiniai feilai, dėl kurių paskui gyvenime lydi nekokios pasekmės. Ir gal kitaip ir negalėjo būti? Man patinka, kaip šita knyga neprivilegijuoja nė vieno varianto, ir nors plūduriuojantis pasaulis turėtų būti gėris ir grožis, nekiša jo kaip ultimate vertybės ir saugumo. Čia dar jaunas pasakotojas aiškina mokytojui, kodėl pradėjo tapyt kitaip ir socialiai angažuotai (ir mokytojas dėl to jį išspiria iš savo globos):

    -Per pastaruosius metus aš labai daug ko išmokau. Daug ko pasisėmiau, kontempliuodamas malonumų pasaulį ir vertindamas jo trapų grožį. Bet dabar jaučiu, kad atėjo metas man pereiti prie kitų dalykų. Sensei, aš įsitikinęs, kad tokiais neramiais laikais kaip šie menininkai privalo išmokti vertinti kai ką labiau apčiuopiama negu tie malonūs dalykai, pranykstantys rytui išaušus. Menininkams nebūtina visuomet gyventi dekadentiškame ir uždarame pasaulyje. Sąžinė man sako, Sensei, kad negaliu amžinai likti plūduriuojančio pasaulio menininku. (p. 188)


    Gražus užaugimo pasakojimas - apie tai, kaip pasirenki išeiti iš globos ir kad tai reiškia apsisprendimus, savo kelio ieškojimą, kuris galiausiai gali nuvesti šūdkeliais. Ir dažnai ir nuveda. Ir tokia neidealizuota žinutė, man atrodo, daro knygą ypač vertingą. (ir kaip gerai, kad negyvenu Japonijoj)

    An Artist of the Floating World has much the same flavor to it that Remains of the Day possesses. It is a first person narrative from a narrator who is obvious in his inability to be impartial or reliable. As we try to piece together the truth of this man and his life, there is a heaviness of spirit that emerges, a sense of failure that is misunderstood, and a sense that Ono, the narrator, not only misunderstands himself but also those around him.

    Like much of Ishiguro’s work, this book leaves you at the end with a lot of questions you feel you must not only ask, but answer. Is it better to have acted upon your convictions and been wrong than to have done nothing at all? Are we ever as important to the world as we believe we are? When does conviction become narrow-mindedness? Are we ever right to impose our views upon others, and what price is fair for making a mistake that can be literally seen as the mistake of an entire society? And, I suppose I would add one more: Can we ever remember the past as it actually was, or must be always alter it somewhat to make the memory survivable?

    Another question that I have pondered over my life is that of what makes an artist or a piece of art great? If it is declared to be great, can it then be less simply because fashions have changed, times have changed, or the subject matter becomes less palatable. I have wondered about this in regards to literature as well as painting. Sometimes it seems so arbitrary. For instance, there were paintings that were done by a student of a master (I believe it was Rembrandt, but don’t hold me to that). At any rate, they were mistaken to be the major artists’ works and declared to be masterpieces and worth millions. It was then discovered that although they were painted in the same time, they were not his work. Immediately they became second-rate and worth much less. How can this be so? If they were masterfully done, are they not still masterfully done? Are they of less value because the painter is no longer a well-recognized name or figure?
    The imagery in the novel is striking. There are many scenes where the description amounts to a visual painting:

    Beneath his umbrella, he was hatless and dressed in a dark raincoat. The charred buildings behind him were dripping and the remnant of some gutter was making a large amount of rainwater splash down not far from him. I remember a truck going by between us, full of building workers. And I noticed how one of the spokes of his umbrella was broken, causing some more splashing just beside his foot.

    If I could paint, I would paint this man, for I can see him and I can see how broken he is and how all of his physical environment echoes his loneliness and sorrow.

    In a world that is changing, that has already changed, post-war Japan, Mr. Ono is a fish out of water, a man who cannot reconcile his version of his life or his country with the version that is presented to him by his children or his society. He struggles to see why his masterpiece is now a forgery, or at the least a mistake. And, Ishiguro captures his struggle perfectly.

    The best things, he always used to say, are put together of a night and vanish with the morning. What people call the floating world, Ono, was a world Gisaburo knew how to value.

    Perhaps all things are temporary, fleeting, gone in an instant, and perhaps the only success or victory in life is to be able to see them momentarily and appreciate their value.

    Steady, measured, gentle, sure-handed, slightly seductive.

    Ishiguro's narrator is fooling himself for sure throughout his tale, but you almost believe him.

    Some wonderfully graceful pacing, with the situations and pages melting into one another, which as one reviewer here remarked, makes a "floating world" all its own.

    It sort of reminds me of the thing said about Flaubert's "Sentimental Education"- the main theme is largely heard in the background. For Flaubert it was revolutionary upheaval in mid 19th Century France, shuddering the class distinctions and ever so gently rattling the cages of the bourgeoise.

    Brilliant trick, that.

    Ishiguro's up the same kind of thing here, though I gotta say he doesn't quite pull it off as well.

    the narrator's spent some time polishing the bronze of the powers that be in ww2 Japan, living in a sensual, apathetic 'floating world', and now he's come out it (somewhat) to face the fact that his life has been a sort of lie.

    He is trying to get over his predjuces and outmoded ways of thinking but he seems pretty much to stay where he is, physchically, though he mentally registers that he's been wrong.

    What I'm sort of getting at here is that the political and aesthetic sins of his generation (the narrator's, that is) are only really mentioned briefly, so subtly that they almost don't register. They don't touch the present actions, except as a moral lesson in memory.

    He pretty much just watches bemused and uncomprehending at his nephew, who is one of the more lively and skillfully drawn minor characters I've seen in a long time. Ono doesn't seem to have had to pay for very much of his errors in judgement, which sounds harsh but ruins some of the dramatic impact.

    Ishiguro seems to to be saying that an artist (even a nominally apolitical one) can't take a passive attitude to his culture and his times. He doesn't have the luxury of being a pure aesthete. In order to mature and have ethical integrity he's got to address of the moral complexities of his generation. He needs to make sure he's not the side of the executioners, to paraphrase Camus.

    Point well taken. And it's decently executed, but the character doesn't seem (and his world even less so, though there's the beautiful set piece of the falling leaves) haunted enough by the glare of fascism to really drive the point home. It's too mild on this issue, which is a bit of a shame because its mildness is also its blessing.

    Mostly very good, just read it for the set pieces and the characterization and the smooth, almost gliding quality of this very small but quite worthwhile story.

    I'm definitely curious about Ishiguro's other work, having loved the movie of "The Remains Of The Day" and heard all the highfalutin' praises of "Never Let Me Go", which apparently everybody in the friggin' world thinks is timeless genius.

    We'll see...as for now, I've got my hopes up.

    Memory and the heart. Such fragile things on which to build our notion of ourselves. The old prophet Jeremiah said, “The heart is deceitful above all things . . . Who can understand it?” Memory is surely at least as deceitful as the heart. Both memory and the heart seem to be at the mercy of the transient, ephemeral world of human life. And they are central to the fiction of Japanese/British writer Kazuo Ishiguro.

    An Artist of the Floating World is a beautiful emotional set piece. Following World War II, an aging Japanese artist struggles to integrate his experience of post-war Japan with the memories of his pre-war life and his role in the rise of the empire that ended in the destruction of the old world.

    Kazuo Ishiguro may be best known for his novel The Remains of the Day and its film adaptation, with Anthony Hopkins as the butler Stevens and Emma Thompson as Miss Kenton. There are significant similarities in tone and theme between the two novels. In both cases, the main character looks back on a career in which he devoted his life to a cause that was later shown to be horribly mistaken and in which he turned his back on a path that would have resulted in a different, and probably more fulfilling life. In The Remains of the Day, Mr. Stevens does not marry Miss Kenton, and in An Artist of the Floating World, the artist Masuji Ono turns his back on “fine art,” the art focused on the fleeting beauty of this world, in order to make his art serve the empire of the “New Japan.”

    Both novels are told from a perspective not long after the war, looking back on a time prior to and during the war, blended with the narrator’s current life. The tone of both is nostalgic, beautiful. In An Artist of the Floating World, Ishiguro’s use of an unreliable narrator, whose growth in the novel is toward self-realization, is masterful. Numerous times in the narrative, the artist Ono says it is entirely possible that his memory of an event or conversation is not accurate, that things might not have happened exactly as he presents them. These admissions become part of his growth in awareness of self, and are some of the elements that make him sympathetic and human, and very like all of us.

    A reader who identifies with Ono, and feels compassion for him, may experience in reading this novel what Aristotle called catharsis in his Poetics, a vicarious purging of guilt and fear, the impetus toward self-understanding. Ishiguro seems to be saying that as we grow older, we come to realize how much of our image of ourselves is dependent on feeling and memory, and we come to understand how fickle, how deceitful, those things can be. And if we are to live in peace with ourselves, we must see ourselves honestly and forgive ourselves for all the well-intentioned errors of the past. Only then can we live with integrity and dignity.

    There's enjoyable monotony and then there's monotonous monotony. This novel falls into the latter category. Disappointingly. I personally think Ishiguro suffers the sophomore struggle with this novel. Eh, I don't know. This one just wasn't for me. It didn't entice me at all. I was just reading about these characters doing things and that was really it. However it written very well. But that's expected from Ishiguro.
