Dear Brendan, I’m sure you’re surprised to hear from me. I am a second cousin of your Grandfather and it was he who gave me your address. Our families have had little or no communication over the years. Now however, my wife has recently passed away and as I am the last of my line of Kelly’s, I would like to settle old wounds and give you some things belonging to your Great-Great-Grandmother, Mary Kelly (nee Murphy). Your father told me that you and your new German wife are due back to Ireland on holidays this week and I would be grateful if you both could join me for lunch in The Galway Bay Hotel, Salthill on Sunday 29th. Please come and please confirm with the hotel that you are coming. Their phone number is 091 520520.
Yours Sincerely, Patrick Kelly

Having crossed Fifth Avenue, Mary wheeled her black perambulator into Central Park. It just past ten a.m. and she would take her usual circular route, sitting on a park bench for five minutes at the halfway point and finishing the walk in one hour. The perambulator was huge with a large hood that could be let up to completely cover the baby in case of inclement weather. It could also be let down flat or kept anywhere in between. As Eli liked to look around it was usually kept nearly flat. She never noticed that she was being watched.
The space was empty except for a piece of parchment with some copperplate handwriting.
It read-
Transylvania 1875
If this you have seen, it’s written, your fate,
You may seem to marry the one that you hate,
Your problems may glide to the heavenly gate,
For dreams to come true, a century you’ll wait.
Mary was perplexed. What could it mean? She was sure about whom she hated, Bully Kelly and she was definitely not going to marry or seem to marry him.
Oh dear, who was going to die and go to heaven?
What was her dream? Before she let herself down, she had hoped to earn enough to be able to help her family at home and some-day, to meet and marry a nice man. But all her chances were gone now. Come to think of it, she never really had an all-consuming dream. Not like her mother, who was forever dreaming of once again owning Carrigbeg for the dead Red Kellys.
“Oh no, not more predictions! But at least they were not so dire.
It did not matter as they were dead and she was not going to try to identify the corpse they had.
As she watched Eli creeping around the room she decided to make a list of her problems so that she could put them in order of importance in her mind. She wrote just one word reminders.
Condition-Nuns-Money-Bag-Law-Bully-Predictions-Tom Henry-Europe, Paula.
Her condition was what it was. She could not change that.
“Think Mary, think.” She said to herself.
She had decided to ignore the predictions but now the second one was niggling and demanding her attention.
Then it hit her, the most devious, daring and dangerous idea of her entire life. It would solve all her problems. God must indeed have forgiven her and was now going to lead her out of the wilderness, “to heaven’s gate!” Frightened she trembled. Was there someone walking on her grave?
“No, it would never work. It was too good to be true. She would not get away with it. There were too many things to go wrong. Forget it. Just forget it.”
She could not let it go.
“Mary Murphy”, she said to herself, “where’s your pride? Where’s your courage? Where’s the Red Kelly fighting spirit? Did Pounder give up? Did your mother give up or give in? Did Moses refuse his and
