Lucy Loves Sherman Reviews

LUCY LOVES SHERMAN by Catherine Bailey was a delightful story about a young girl and her request for an unusual pet. Beautifully illustrated by Meg Walters my granddaughter and I delighted in this tale about a young girl's adventure to save an eighty-year-old lobster she befriends. With its colorful pages, Bailey reminds adults of that time they wanted an impossible pet. For me, it was a hippopotamus, and my youngest desperately wanted a dolphin. Bailey uses this desire to share the power of finding a cause and making a difference. I loved how word of mouth and media helped Lucy save Sherman. The tale was funny, cute and uplifting all while teaching valuable lessons. Its simple text and colorful imagery will hold young readers attention. Be warned, though, they will probably want to keep a lobster in your bathtub!

I'm back this week with another review for a fantastic new children's book. Lucy Loves Sherman, written by Catherine Bailey with vibrant illustrations by Meg Walters, is a love story of sorts. Our heroine, the young Lucy immediately falls in love with Sherman. She is certain the two will become best friends. The only problem. . . Sherman is a Lobster!

The fateful meeting occurs at the local fish market. Lucy is visiting with her Nana when she eyes the large crustacean. She begs Nana to allow her to take Sherman home with them. Lucy argues that the 18 pound lobster would be the perfect pet. "No shedding! No barking! No chewing on the furniture!" Naturally, Nana refuses. That's when things take a turn for the worse.

The chef from a local restaurant quickly purchases Sherman with the intent of featuring him as a special meal. The resourceful Lucy springs into action. When sabotage and deceit fail her, Lucy turns to peaceful and informative activism to save her strange friend.

Lucy Loves Sherman is a delightful tale of the unlikely friendship of a girl and a lobster and the power of celebrating friendship despite differences. Bailey's book teaches that anything is possible if you believe that it can be done. The resolution sees Lucy teaching her town about how important Sherman is. She uses the facts about him and her love for him to convince the town to rally behind his release. Walters fun illustrations bring the story to life with a colorful flair. Lucy Loves Sherman is sure to entertain your little ones and inspire them to appreciate all the creatures that fill their world.

Three cheers for Lucy and Sherman!
This is a picture book about a girl named Lucy who fell in love with a lobster. A lobster?! Yes, the lobster that you eat. It happened at Flotsam’s Fish Market when Lucy was shopping with her Nana. Lucy liked a lobster named Sherman because he waved hi and wore polka dots just like her. She wanted to take him home but her Nana said no because he had sharp claws. Can you imagine a lobster as a pet? Lucy’s Nana couldn’t either.

Lucy never gave up. She changed the sign that said for sale to say not for sale. That cracked me up. Lucy was so funny! The store owner said people would pay lots of money for Sherman because he was special. Sherman was 80 year old and he weighed 18 pounds. He was big and old. That gave Lucy an idea. I don’t want to give away the rest of the story but it does have a happy ending. You’ll have to read it to find out.

I thought it was hysterical that Lucy wanted to have a pet lobster. Even though I would never want one, I like to eat them, I can understand why Lucy liked Sherman. I liked his polka dots too. Lucy had some great ideas to save Sherman. Did you know that real people did that? It is based on a true story. There are lots of facts about lobsters at the end of the book.
I loved this book and would recommend it for kids ages 3-6 year old. The pictures were great and I like how Lucy never gave up. I give this book 5 stars.

    4.5 stars -- "Sherman's not a delicacy. He's my friend!"

This is a delightful picture book that stars a little girl and her new best buddy--an 80-year-old lobster named Sherman. The problem is, Sherman happens to reside in a tank in the local seafood market--and he's for sale! Lucy has to find a way to save Sherman--and quick!

Kids and adults will be grinning at Lucy's wild schemes to rescue Sherman...until she finally realizes that talking to people about her friendship with the polka-dotted crustacean is the way to their hearts.

LUCY LOVES SHERMAN is a delight, and wonderful modelling of compassion to even unusual creatures. Its cute, colorful illustrations and wacky, warmhearted style communicate compassion to even the most mainstream audiences without turning them off. Recommended!

Oh my goodness, what a cute story! Clever and illustrated beautifully! I do have a problem with it, though, and some people would say, "author's license," but it gives kids misinformation....lobsters are NOT red or orange until they're cooked. 98% of lobsters are a greenish brown until then. But I still loved it....

This is a fun story about a little girl (Lucy) and a lobster (Sherman) in a fish tank in a fish market. Lucy bonds with the lobster and does everything she an to save him from someone's dinner table. A surprise ending with some back matter to tell children more about lobsters and their special traits.

This adorably illustrated book shows a little girl who is determined to save Sherman the lobster from his cooking pot fate.
The kids enjoyed this tale and were even more enthusiastic to learn it is somewhat based on true stories of people saving unusually large lobsters from dinner plates.

feels dumb to be critiquing a children's book but..... this story was slightly all over the place ohmy IT LOST ME FOR A BIT i mean i guess it was cute but...

When Lucy sees Sherman it’s love at first sight. The problem is Sherman is an eighty-year-old lobster and he is for sale at the fish market. Easy text and bright illustrations follow Lucy as she tries everything to keep him safe. In the end it’s word of mouth and the media that save the day. Cute story to be shared with ages three to six.

While out shopping with her Nana, Lucy saw an interesting crustacean, wearing polka dots, just like her. Sherman waved and Lucy waved back. He said hello. Lucy said Hi. Then she asked her Nana if she could take Sherman home with them. Nana said no, for some very good reasons.

    “He’s too dangerous.”
    “It’s too big.”

“But I love him,” said Lucy.

Meg Walters’ Sherman is an engaging, though quiet, creature with amazingly expressive facial features. Thanks to Lucy’s responses, kids will instantly recognize the couple of words Sherman speaks. This perfectly planned . . .

I love reviewing books about kids who get fired up about something. In a book I recently got to review, Lucy Loves Sherman, Lucy is appalled that the lobster she loves is going to be the special meal of the day.

She doesn't just sit idly by. She rallies the troops, letting them all know just how special Sherman is. And at the end of the day, the boo has a wonderfully happy ending.

It's a cute story that just may make mini-activitists out of your kids!

Lucy is grocery shopping with her grandmother when she finds a kindred soul in an 80 year old lobster who is wearing polka dots, just like her. Lucky becomes best of friends Sherman, but she soon realizes that Sherman in is the grocery store to be sold as dinner. Lucy rushes into action to try and save her friend.
What's great about Lucy Loves Sherman is that young children will find a character their ages who is intelligently proactive about her situation. Lucy makes several humorous attempts to save Sherman on her own, but by asking for help from her friends and neighbors she just might save the day.
