Bestselling Author and Missionary Rolland Baker Reveals the Heart of True, Lasting Revival

"There has been much talk in recent years of revival," says bestselling author and missionary Rolland Baker, "so much so that I wonder at times whether revival itself has become the object of devotion."

Too often believers seek out revival, not the Reviver. When unchecked, they often pursue an emotional or physical experience or focus on how many came to Christ, rather than worship Jesus himself. Yet the heart of true, lasting revival is Christ--of falling in love with him so deeply that you can't help but tell others about him. And that, says Baker, is what has fueled him, his wife, Heidi, and all of Iris Ministries over the last thirty years.

"This book is about sustaining revival over decades," says Baker. "By that I mean it is a book about falling in love and staying in love with the person of Jesus Christ. Revival is about the Reviver, nothing more and nothing less. My prayer is that you will fall in love with him with all your heart as you read these pages, and that you will not be able to resist giving that love away, wherever you place your feet."

Keeping the Fire Reviews

  • Lynn's

“Keeping The Fire” is a short book by missionaries Rolland and Heidi Baker about the core values of their ministry in Mozambique and how they’ve sustained revival in their lives and ministry. Each chapter is about one of the five core values that they live out, and I was very impressed with their humbleness and willingness to be servants of God in Africa. After a chapter or two, I could tell that they came from a more charismatic denomination than me, but I was still impacted by how they run their ministry and the miracles that they’ve witnessed among those they serve. God is doing mighty things through this ministry!

Truly exceptional read. I definitely recommend it.

The Bakers have had decades of a fruitful ministry in Mozambique. Rolland Baker shares in this book what has kept their fire going.

He gives the core values that have guided their ministry. 1. Find God. Hearts are hungry for a Person. Their focus has been seeking and finding God with all their hearts. 2. Depend on Miracles. That requires humble hearts and trusting God. Baker recounts many of the miracles they have experienced. 3. Go to the Least. Prove the love of God by helping the poor. Adorn the Gospel with love and good works. 4. Suffer for Him, if Necessary. They know they must die to live. They are willing to give up all for the Gospel and they share many experiences. 5. Rejoice in the Lord. Many reasons for joy in their work are given and we are reminded of the subject of their joy, Jesus.

I really like how the Bakers approach ministry. Their theology is well developed and balanced. They embrace the work of the Spirit but do not neglect the work of the cross. Baker is quick to say that these are their core values and every ministry cannot be made to fit them. Each ministry must seek God and find their own values.

He also suggests that these core values should be a part of the normal Christian life. As we stay on the path of adoration of Christ, we live out these values.

I recommend this book to Christians who want to know how to keep the fire of revival burning in their own lives and in the lives of others. The ministry of the Bakers' is a good example and great inspiration.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.

I love the distilled wisdom of Rolland Baker, father of a worldwide movement of missionaries, doing its part to restore apostolic faith to the church. What he lives, he writes about here. While serving the poor on the continent of Africa, Rolland has found himself at the end of his own strength many times. His life has been a journey in learning to lean on the power of God. This book tells some of those stories and outlines the principles that keep Iris Global alive.

A great read that gets at the heart of Iris Global. I love the passion that shows through as Roland writes about the foundation of Iris' and the Baker's personal ministry. You can see both the emotional impetus and the well-reasoned message in each core value in the book. I enjoyed it so much, that I am rereading it to my wife as part of our prayer time before bed!
