Once Taken is book #2 in the bestselling Riley Paige mystery series, which begins with Once Gone.

Women are being murdered in upstate New York, their bodies found mysteriously hanging in chains. With the FBI called in, given the bizarre nature of the murders—and the lack of any clues—there is only one agent they can turn to: Special Agent Riley Paige.

Riley, reeling from her last case, is reluctant to take on a new one, since she is still convinced a former serial killer is out there, stalking her. She knows, though, that her ability to enter a serial killer’s mind and her obsessive nature is what will be needed to crack this case, and she just can’t refuse—even if it will push her over the edge.

Riley’s search takes her deep into a killer’s deluded mind as it leads her to orphanages, mental hospitals, prisons, all in an effort to understand the depth of his psychosis. Realizing she is up against a true psychopath, she knows time is short before he strikes again. But with her own job on the line and her own family a target, and with her fragile psyche collapsing, it may all be too much for her—and too late.

A dark psychological thriller with heart-pounding suspense,

Once Taken (Riley Paige #2) Reviews

    1 Estrella!

After having read the prequel and then book 1 of this series, I was so hoping I would not be disappointed .... and I wasn't. This is just as well written as the first with the same solid characters. FBI Agent Lucy Vargas is introduced as a new partner for Paige while her old partner has taken a step back.

Paige is called to investigate the death of several women in New York. They have been found hanging in areas wrapped in chains and their throats cut. This is a serial killer that is different in every way. It's going to take Paige using her ability to step into a killer's mind to hunt down this killer.

Meanwhile, Paige is convinced that the serial killer who abducted her a while back is not dead, as she's been told. She is reassured by all that the man was killed .... but when he abducts Paige's daughter, everyone must accept the truth and work to get her daughter back before she becomes his next victim.

This is a dark psychological thriller with heart-pounding suspense, memorable characters, and killers that will have you double-checking the locks on the doors.

Many thanks to the author for the digital copy of this psychological crime thriller. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

Please note that I gave this book half a star, but Goodreads only allows full star ratings. Therefore, I rated this one star on Goodreads.

I honestly have no idea why I continued with this book. Maybe because I wanted to see how terrible it was going to be. Next time curiosity be damned, I will just DNF.

"Once Taken" is book #2 in the Riley Paige series. Or what I started calling, that series with the FBI agent who makes Lizzie from the "Blacklist" look intelligent.

I really can't stand Riley. Apparently known as the best profiler that has ever lived, Riley's personal life is still a shambles. Still believing that a serial killer that everyone believes died prior to the events in book #1 is still alive, Riley doesn't know who to turn to. While dealing with that, she is also called into another serial killer case in upstate New York.

Riley is a mess of a character. Sometimes authors can work with that and manage to intrigue readers and even have readers on the side of said characters. But honestly, I couldn't stand Riley. You would think she was raised by wolves by the way she acts about her daughter and about to be former husband. All Riley cares about is solving serial killer cases. Without her partner Bill around you wonder if Riley would ever manage to remember to eat and drink because she apparently needs a minder because I guess she is so brilliantly smart she doesn't need to worry about mundane things like this.

And like I said in my prior book, it doesn't make much sense that Riley's husband is just this guy who gets annoyed about the fact that he has a daughter. The guy acted like a concerned father in the last book, that guy is gone in this book with hints he will never be around again left for the reader.

You really don't get any insight into other characters in this one though we get shifting points of view in this one just like in the last book. We have Riley, her daughter April, another FBI agent named Lucy, as well as the two serial killers, and one of the victims. With all of that it would have been great to actually see some well developed people. I think the only saving grace in the last book was that it started off with Riley's partner, Bill. I wish that we had shifted focus to him, because at least he seems as sick of Riley's crap as I was.

And can I say if these were real FBI agents investigating murders, no one would ever get caught. The laughable clues that were left which somehow led one person into insight because of the writing on a card (the person who reveals it is not a FBI agent either) and then how one of the agents should have magically realized a person in the van was a killer was eye roll worthy.

Having two separate serial killers in this book was a mistake. There was too much going on. We literally hit hard pause why Riley goes and investigates the former case she is obsessed with. Let us not even roll our eyes about how the guy somehow managed to live. And if you want an answer to how he survived, keep waiting, none of that is even revealed.

When the book switches back to the other serial killer we then have Riley puling a Clarice Starling and going to visit a criminal in jail who she believes can give her more insight into her killer. I rolled my eyes repeatedly. It makes no sense why she would even visit this guy, and his bullshit insight into Riley and her partner Bill made me laugh. It was such crap.

I found the writing in this book to be just as terrible as it was in book #1. There were typos here and there and once again the dialogue in this book was almost non-existent. I don't know what is going on with this series, but to have so many characters barely speaking to each other makes no sense at all.

The ending was ho-hum and I guess it is leaving things wide open about what is going to happen next with Riley and Bill.

    3.5 ⭐️

    A really well done procedural

Riley Paige is an Agent with the FBI’s BHU. She and her long term partner, Bill Patterson, have had a falling out and she is working with a new young agent, Lucy. Five years earlier a woman’s remains were found in a local river wrapped in chains. Now another woman has been found hanging, wrapped in chains, from a tree. Riley and Lucy go to upstate New York to lead the investigation into who the killer is. Meanwhile, Riley’s young daughter is kidnapped from her father’s house. The novel deals, quite effectively, with both cases. It is well written and well plotted making it a very good introduction to a new series. Thanks to the author and publisher for an e-galley for an honest review.

4 stelle meritate. Alla prox. Buona lettura.

  • Nicole

I loved this case. I loved the situation with Peterson and how brave Riley was and April too. I do like that Riley finally moved out of her house. Hopefully that will give her some piece of mind.

This is the second installment in the series and I am not sold on continuing it. The main character, Agent Riley Paige lacks depth for me and I just don't see what is so special about her abilities as an FBI agent for the BAU. She is known for her ability to "get inside" the serial killer's mind. She is a behavioral analyst; isn't that what the agents in the BAU are known for? Nothing stands out for me that separates her from her team. She is emotionally and mentally unstable, yet she is made the lead on most cases. She is often wrong with her profile.
There are a total of 5 books in this series, but I don't feel compelled to go any further. Maybe I just watch Criminal Minds too much and see gaps throughout both books that I have read thus far. There is no suspense or "wow" factor for me as a reader to continue this series.

Dar nu-i foarte deranjant.

I read the first book in this series a couple weeks ago. As the first book ended, FBI Special Agent Riley Paige discovers pebbles on her bed. Someone has been in her home. She is sure that the serial killer everyone thought was dead is not. Riley knows Peterson is coming for her. She didn't know he was coming for her daughter.

While this story plays out, a new killer slashes his victim's throat and wraps them in chains. He also places them in a strait jacket. This exact same crime was committed five years ago. Riley attempts to get into the killer's mind. Rookie Lucy Vargas is assigned to be her partner on this case.

This author's style is to create a serial killer who murders in bizarre ways. Like the first book, this is a slim one. I continue to want additional details. I don't feel like I know Riley much more at the end of this story but maybe a fresh personal life will help. My library has the next book in this series and I will consider reading it.

3...Same as the last book...Riley's actual case this time around is great, fast paced...but the storyline with her daughter, over done so many times I could scream...Also just like my last review, would have been better a few novels in, with more characters connection...otherwise these novels are fast paced and good for anybody who's a junkie for this genre!

  • Cathryne

A decent crime read. I still really like the character development of Riley Paige and that they talked about Bill Jeffreys and April more. I found the author tried to cram a lot of story lines into one book but I did find the ending made me want to continue reading the series. Would recommend as a light crime read.

  • Allison Bean

DNF. Wasn’t gripping, couldn’t get into it.

I always find a Blake Pierce book difficult to read. I lost track of the number of times my terror button was pushed. This author is incredibly good at creating tension, allowing it to build to a crescendo, then ebbing it back to a more comfortable level. It happens over and again in this story.

The main character is probably not someone that most people would choose as a close friend. She's ultra-focused on her job. Everything in her life takes a back seat to the BAU to the detriment of family and friends. She makes terrible choices, yes, but she lives with them without much complaint, realizing that she is responsible for the path she's taken. It makes her bearable.

I can't honestly say that I like this series. I don't enjoy the way it makes me feel. I do, however, relish the opportunity to live a life that I would never have chosen.

Another 5 star book in the Riley Paige Mystery series! As soon as I finished this book I started on the next book in the series, it is that good. Usually I'll read something from another author, then get back to a series, just so it doesn't all get blurred together. But Riley Paige is such a great psychological series that I can't wait to get to the next book. Riley is with the BAU (Behavioral Analysis Unit) of the FBI and some of the serial killers she hunts are such twisted psychopaths that I have to close the book (kindle, actually), walk in circles a minute, then sit back down and get back into the book because it is that intense! You can't go wrong with this series if this is a genre you like. These are the best of the best!

  • Donna ~ The Romance Cover

These books are incredibly addictive and as you can see from my reading list, I am reading them at the rate of knots. I have been devouring this series and every other series this author has written. What I will note, is that the books seem to be getting shorter at the same price point and the editing leaves a lot to be desired. However, the stories just bring me back for more and more and more.

    Another great read 🤩

This is the second book in this series that I’ve listen to on audio book and I absolutely love it. I really enjoy the audio book version of the narrator really brings the story to life and really adds to the suspense and mystery which makes the experience 10x times better. I look forward to continuing this series my favourite audio books to date 💜

This is book two in the Riley Paige series, and I’m hooked. Riley is an FBI agent with an uncanny ability to get into the minds of serial killers. She has a teenage daughter, April, who some readers feel Riley is a very poor mother, (Riley herself sometimes believes that). I, for one, disagree with that. Riley is hard wired to try and remove every evil monster she can. Riley and April’s relationship has been challenging at times, but in this book their relationship really took a turn for the better. I’m sure there will always be ups and downs in their mother daughter relationship, that is truly a fact of life. Riley knows where she has failed April along the way, and she has done her very best at improving their life together. Yes, Riley will still do her job and go after the monsters, but April now understands her mother’s job so much better now and realizes her mother will always be there for her.

This is the 2nd book I read and it's not bad. We get to know Riley better and the book actually has 2 story lines. The first continues where the previous book left off and next to it, Riley is assigned a new case and partner. The cases are intriguing, but the way Riley solves them is quite unrealistic or you have to go with the fact that she really has special psychic powers and can get into the unsub's head.

What did annoy me the most however was the large amount of typing errors in the free e-book copy I received from Kobo. This book really needs to be re-edited.

  • Linda Branham

Great story. This book takes up where the first left off. Riley continues on her journey of self discovery while tracking a mentally deranged serial killer that is driven by chains.
The characters and their relationship with each other continues to develop in this fast paced book. A serial killer is once again on the loose and it's up to Riley and her partner, Bill to track him down. They must determine not only what drives him to kill, but who he is and how he chooses his victims, and they have to do it before he kills again.
I found this book to be a simple, yet enjoyable read with well developed characters.

  • Sarah Robins

I didn’t enjoy this as much as the first one. We carry on following the life of agent Riley Paige and she seems to constantly get targeted by killers! This book just had too much going on for me that it felt unrealistic. Agent Paige can get inside killers minds but this book took that a step to far!
Shame as I’d actually like to see what happens in her future but I don’t think I will read the next one even so.

  • Totora

  • Michael Perrucci

I'm really hoping Blake is one of the authors that I started with from series 1 to when he makes it bigger! I expect to see more of his amazing writing. Although this one book 2... could've been a bit shorter but it's great when details go deep and vivid! That's what I want!
