I thought this was an o.k. book. It had some good general information but it was pretty bare bones IMHO. I didn't get too much out of it - but I have read a lot of other running books. If you are a just the facts person and don't want anything extra then this one might do. I liked the format of the book but I strongly prefer a few other books to this one as far as content including
The Ultimate Beginner's Running Guide: The Key to Running Inspired and
Running for Mortals: A Commonsense Plan for Changing Your Life With Running. If it's color and pictures you want you can pick up
Runner's World Complete Book of Beginning Running which has some great info but, frankly, caused me to be quite distracted as it is often text over pictures. Happy Trails to you! -
Fine for what it is, which unfortunately is a bit one-size-fits-all. Female athletes might consider reading Stacy Simm's "Roar" or in addition to this.

An excellent book for beginner and intermediate long-distance runners. Coach Mario Fraioli has helped some runners complete their first 5K and other runners compete in the Olympics. In this book, Mario shares advice and training tips that many runners “know” but don’t often practice. His chapters on recovery and supplementary training are an important balance for distance runners who focus too much on mileage and high-intensity workouts.
Mario sold me my first pair of running shoes when I decided to tackle a 10-mile race. I was 40 pounds heavier than I am now, and could only run 2 miles at a 12:00 minute per mile pace. But when I was greeted by Mario, he treated me with respect, listened to my goals and helped me choose the best pair of shoes for me. As my training progressed, and I moved into marathons, Mario was a constant source of advice and encouragement.
Reading this book, I could “hear” Mario’s voice in the words. His desire to help runners achieve their goals is authentic. Take advantage of Mario’s knowledge and experience by applying the lessons in this book to your training. -
Quick overview of training, nutrition, common injuries and prevention, as well as some basic strategies for first-time runners. Nice intro for a novice, but as a starting point. There are other books that go into more detail on each of these topics.
