Charles Mingus, the renowned musician, composer and civil rights activist, claimed to be three people, was married to one of his wives by Ginsberg, and collaborated with such luminaries as Langston Hughes and Joni Mitchell. Twelve of the poems in A Mingus Lullaby explore moments in his life, compositions, performances, or are part of a fictional conversation between Mingus and the author. Themes from his life permeate throughout the collection.

    Loved these poems full of heart, rhythm, no anodyne, cold lines here: a book about humans, individuals within a community. Poems that challenge bias & microagressions.

    From one of my favourite poems, No(n)sense: "In the first dimension I was but a line. Straight. There was only one path. Peacefully, we congregated at the point of infinity. There were no arguments because there was no choice. Just stark, charcoal greys — we ran over one another. / In the second, I was a painting inspired by anger. The laws of refraction stole colour away. I was pastels, oil reflecting the absence and presence of light. Your still life stared back at me.

    A Mingus Lullaby was a very enjoyable read and I definitely recommend.

    When your hear the word "lullaby" you think sleep. What if Dane Swan was on the other side yelling..."Wake Up"
    A powerful collection of loss times, stereotypes and a life style behind a poet.

    I'll be on the look out for more work from Dane Swan, his lullaby is music for the eyelids. Here is a list of my favorites;

    -Epitaph 9
    -Resuscitation
    -Epitaph 3
    -The one day later (if you like rap music, then you'll enjoy these lines.)
    -Epitaph 6
    -No(n)Sense
    -The Cedar Tree (it's like saving the best for last.)

    Recommended to poetry readers!!

    Toronto poet Dane Swan's poems are perceptive works, vibrant with anger, good and evil, and the cadences of progressive jazz. They are not what an average reader might expect of "poetry." That is why those who love poetry, people, passion, personalities, and protest will find them to be a treat worthy of the $20 price. For more, catch the full review at Veereads -
