I want pants, says a little panda to his father.
You are a panda, answers the father . Pandas do NOT wear pants.

And so begins a hilarious battle of wills when a young panda tries to convince his father why pants make perfect sense. After all, pants are soft. Pants keep you warm. Some pants even have . . . POCKETS! But with a menacing snow leopard lurking in the background, will the longed-for pants end up having an even greater role to play?

Jacqueline Davies’s humorous story, with deliciously droll illustrations from Sydney Hanson, captures the push and pull between a parent and child as they face off over the age-old dilemma of what to wear . . . with the most heartwarming of results.

Panda Pants Reviews

An earnest child and a patient parent debate the merits and necessity of pants. It was a decent, if boring story, until the snow leopard incident. There are no words in this section so it's hard to surmise exactly what is happening. Was the leopard attacking, threatening, or just playfully scaring? No matter, the solution is to bash him in the head with a watermelon! Until this point, the tone of the story seems playful and light, so the action seems out of place. There is no explanation after the bashing and the story ends abruptly leaving the reader to wonder what it was all about. A strange story but I enjoyed the illustrations.

You know how when a kid gets her mind set on something, something she really wants even though she has absolutely no need for it and then she harasses you endlessly until you tear your hair out and even then, she keeps going?
That's what this book is about.

A little panda wants pants and the panda parent, frustrated with the stupidity of the request, uses logic and reason to explain that there's no earthly reason for pandas to wear pants but the little one insists.

Of course, this goes the way it always goes though, in this case, there's a snow leopard (I don't know where this takes place, as there are also a pangolin and a red panda running around with a garden-variety rabbit)(it's like all the animals of Asia live in one spot) and a watermelon involved.

This is a fun, quick, humorous story about what it's like to live with someone who wants crazy things.

Little panda wants pants, but his dad's not buying any of the reasons why he needs them. Wouldn't you know it - the perfect excuse presents itself, but the little guy is too busy taking care of business to bring it up with his pop. It's a cute story, and
Sydney Hanson's artwork is a delight.

Although his father insists that pandas do not wear pants, the young bear in this charming tale is insistent, using every argument at his command to get his way. Pants are warm, he maintains, they have pockets, and they protect legs from scratches. But it isn't until a pair of borrowed pants come in handy during a tiger attack, that Papa Panda is convinced. Of course, by that time his son has moved on, and is yearning for a different sort of accoutrement...

This sweet little book boasts an entertaining story featuring a father and child and their amusing back-and-forth exchanges, as well as adorable illustrations that capture the emotional undercurrents of their discussion. As an adult, I chuckled at Papa Panda's obvious frustration with his son's seemingly random pants-obsession, and I imagine that many parents will recognize this story of dealing with a youngster who has a one-track mind. Children, for their part, will enjoy seeing that youngster's determination to get what he wants justified in the end. Recommended to anyone looking for children's stories featuring a loving parent-child bond, or for tales in which children play the role of the hero.

    Oh. My. God.

This book is quite possibly one of the most adorable things I've ever read.

I love the young panda, I love the parent panda, I love the entire conversation -- and what eventually happens as a result of the young panda's wish for pants.

You know those books that you wish you could rediscover again and again because reading them for the first time was so great? I'm having that feeling right now.

    PANDA PANTS!

This is book is so cute. A discussion between a baby panda and one of its parents about the little panda's desire to get pants and the parent's insistence that pandas don't wear pants. Anyone who has ever had a discussion with a determined child will recognize this situation.

Loved the interaction between little panda and his pops. Totally adorable!

This made us laugh. My son especially, who also thinks of funny things he "needs", found it very funny. The little panda says he needs pants and his dad tries to talk him out of it. In the end he agrees he doesn't need pants, but he does need socks (I think it was). My son said he wanted a cannon for Christmas when he was little and when I explained what a cannon was because I was pretty sure he didn't know, he explained that, yes, he needed a cannon and also a rocket ship.

Aw. This is adorable. A little panda wants to wear pants and is trying to convince a larger panda that pants are a good thing for pandas to wear. It's a very simple story with easy text and great pictures. It made me chuckle and the story time and preschool kids really enjoyed it.

  • Sara Grochowski

Seriously adorable. Reminded me of I Don't Want to Be a Frog!

  • Jen

I found the premise and the ending odd.

  • Allison

    Cute!

  • Patricia N. McLaughlin

Use the pants as a slingshot after 16 pages of pleas for pants? Ugh! Realistic dialogue between a pair of pandas is spoiled by the ill treatment of a playful snow leopard.

  • Erin

This book started off cute and promising, but then it took a very bad turn. I do not understand what happened in the middle and the ending was abrupt and unsatisfying.

A panda cub and his father are walking along when the cub announces that he wants pants. His dad tries to tell him that pandas "don't wear pants," but the cub is having none of that. For every objection dad raises, the cub has a response ready. Then they come across a scarecrow -
which is wearing pants! The panda cub grabs them and puts them on. Meanwhile, they're being stalked by a snow leopard, who chooses that moment to attack. Wielding his mighty new pants, the cub knocks him out with a well-thrown watermelon. Dad is gobsmacked. Hilarious.

Anyone that has a child or works with children will appreciate the humor in this beautifully illustrated picture book about a little panda trying to convince his parent to get him pants.
The book consists of mainly dialogue, with a few pages toward the back using pictures only to tell the story providing an excellent oppurtunity to allow your child to narrarate that part of the story if they so choose.
    A truly adorable book!

A little panda walking through the woods tells his parent that he wants pants. He has a litany of reasons that make about as much sense to his parent as the idea of pants on a panda make to you. I love this book. I love it as a parent who has had similar conversations with my kids. I love it for the illustrations that let the reader in on little secrets. I love the sweet humor and gentle commentary about the parent - child relationship. A read aloud winner.

  • Mrs. Mazzola

Loved the illustrations. Smiling and happy animals always draw me in, but the story was less successful. The young panda wanting to wear pants was endearing, but there was little reason for the dad to continually reject this option simply because "pandas don't wear pants." I kept hoping the dad would come around, but the fact that he stuck to his guns with no real reasons was a bit disappointing.

  • Janet Frost

A darling story reminding us all that "the heart wants what it wants". The little panda wants pants and the adult panda is quite baffled and dismissive about this desire. But luckily he persists, saves the day and quickly moves on to wanting something else. My 3 year old grandson made me immediately read this 4 times in a row as soon as we finished the first time.

  • Katie

A young panda peppers his dad with requests for a pair of pants, while his father responds with reasons why pandas don't need pants. When the little panda uses pants to scare away a threatening animal, the father is surprised when his son gives away the pants. When he asks him about that, the little panda says he now wants a pair of shoes instead.

  • Jennifer

The illustrations are awesome, the text is just funky. The little panda wants pants and gives all kinds of reasons, while the parent keeps shooting them down. The story is fine until the end when a snow leopard jumps out at them and, without really explaining what's going on or why, the little panda throws a watermelon at the snow leopard and decides he wants shoes instead. Um what?

  • Viviane Elbee

The illustrations are adorable, and the dialogue between mama panda and little panda is totally believable (if pandas talked like humans).

I'm not as sure about the watermelon scene (less believable), but I think the kids enjoyed it.

    Quick, fun read.

I think I have carried on a conversation like this many times before with my kids, especially when they were teens. I told them I would make them shirts for Christmas that said:
    I NEED
    I WANT
    I HAVE TO HAVE!
I never did and my kids got the point.

  • Patti

This one made me giggle. Have you ever had a child try to convince you that they need something that you know they really don't need? Why would a panda need pants? But little panda finds pants come in very handy. Great book for teaching persuasion. Recommended from prek-2nd grade.
