What Happens at Christmas is a wonderful festive read for the winter months.
Although there are sad undertones, this book has an overall positive and uplifting feel to it.
I’m such a softie when it comes to dogs, and I have to say, my heart melted when I read the following:
“He had somehow found an old jumper belonging to her dad and had rolled himself into it. He was lying on it, his head on his paws, a woollen sleeve across his front legs, his eyes staring mournfully up at her.”
This is full of romance, friendship, sad and touching moments relating to the past, a lovely close-knit community setting, a cute dog and some festive cheer.
I recommend this to fans of romance and Christmas stories.
I would like to thank the publisher, Carina UK for allowing me a copy of this book via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. -
This is a gorgeous holiday read which has a cosy festive feel, although it isn’t the main feature of the book as there are some important issues regarding self-discovery, bereavement, the possibility of romance and unexpected canine companionship to explore as the story unfolds.
At every stage of the tale there is a strong community spirit, with some well-defined characters offering support and encouragement, which is a particularly enjoyable feature and helps the reader to feel as though they have been in the company of some very special friends. -
What Happens at Christmas, as the name suggests, is set during the lead up to Christmas. I loved Holly, and enjoyed going with her on her journey of discovery about her father, who abandoned her when she was young. The characters she met on the way ranged from gorgeous to quirky and I especially loved the dog. A couple of the dog scenes left me with tears in my eyes.
I received this book free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This is the first of Trevor's books I've read and I'm looking forward to reading more. If you like romantic comedies with depth, that get you in the mood for Christmas, give this a go. -
4.5 Stars
I loved What Happens at Christmas.. based on the cover, you may think its just going to be a shallow Christmas story, but I can assure you, it has a good amount of depth, and a fabulous story.
Holly Brice has been estranged from her father for over 20 years, so is shocked to hear she has inherited a little cottage in a Dartmoor village, that she only vaguely remembers from childhood.
When she gets to Dartmoor she discovers its not just a cottage, but also a very healthy trust fund, and Stirling, a 1 year old dog, that has been very well trained.
Needless to say it was Stirling that to me was the star of the story, especially once he and Holly have bonded. Holly really appreciates the one living link to her father. I will admit to having a soft spot for dogs in books, and when I read this, I had been to a dog show that day, so clearly had gorgeous dogs on the brain, but Stirling is fabulous, and would possibly be a lot of people's idea of a dream dog.
As Holly prepares for Christmas in the cottage, she meets 3 men who all end up meaning different things to her, and also discovers loads about her father.
I found the dealing with Holly's emotions regarding learning all about her father, the reasons for the estrangement and just what it was he was doing to produce such a healthy inheritance, to be very realistic and there are some very touching moments.
The three men who have an impact on Holly are Justin, who also loves classic cars, and has a couple of dates with Holly. Jack, who is her sexy next door neighbour, and friend to her father, as well as to Stirling, and Howard the older gentleman with a surprising past.
The rest of the villagers really make Holly feel at home too, and its not long before she is thinking seriously about her future and what to do with the cottage and Stirling.
There is a lot of snow in this book, as well as Christmas feeling, and the whole books with great pacing is set on the 11 days in the run up to the day itself. And there is a lot packed into each day, which makes this a cosy and easy festive story to read.
What Happens at Christmas is a lovely festive story, and draws in my loves of the south coast of England, snow, dogs, men and Christmas in a delightful tale.
Thanks to Carina and Netgalley for this review copy. This is my honest opinion. -
What Happens at Christmas is a gorgeous, feel-good novel that has some real depth to it. Holly Brice has recently found out that her estranged father has died and that she has inherited his cottage in a quaint little village in Dartmoor. Holly makes a trip to the remote village to clear the cottage out to get it ready for selling and it ends up being a real trip down memory lane for her. Holly also discovers that not only has she inherited her father’s home but also his lovely one-year-old labrador, named Stirling.
Holly ends up on a real journey of discovery as she gets to know some of the locals in the village and also as she begins to clear her dad’s cottage out. She discovers that she may not have known the whole truth about her dad and starts to see him in a different light. I found some of the things Holly finds out about her dad incredibly moving. It was lovely to to see how Stirling was so in tune with Holly’s emotions and was always on hand to offer comfort.
Stirling was the star of this book for me, he was such an affectionate dog and so well-behaved that it’s impossible not to fall in love with him. He was a character in his own right and I really loved how an animal could be written into the story in such a big way.
Holly soon meets the desirable men in the village: Jack the handsome and lovely next-door neighbour, who is a bit mysterious; Justin, who is also a very attractive man but who has issues of his own to work though; and Howard who is lovely and just a little flirtatious in a harmless way.
I love that this book was set in the few days leading up to Christmas, it really did make me feel festive. Often with Christmas novels they are set in the months or year leading up to Christmas but there is something really lovely about a novel where the whole book is set in the immediate run up to Christmas.
This novel has everything you could possibly want in a Christmas story! It’s set at Christmas, it’s in a gorgeous location, it’s heart-breaking but more so it’s heart-warming, it has romance, it has crackly log fires, and it has snow!
I rate this book 8 out of 10 and recommend it to anyone who’s looking for a heart-warming Christmas novel.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
What Happens at Christmas is out now and available to buy from Amazon. -
A village full of lovely people, a wonderful dog, an open minded heroine and 2 hunky men - the book is a complete Christmas gift!
I loved Holly and her 3 date limit and I particularly enjoyed the way she learned about her late father. How all the pieces came together gradually. I admired her for not being judgemental, which would have been the obvious result. I also enjoyed the way the similarities between Holly and George kept appearing throughout the book.
Julia was a real character with a brilliant sense of humour! Some of the stuff she came out with had me laughing out loud!
Jack and Justin were such nice men and I'm glad it came good for all of them in the end!
Great book - one of the best Christmas reads this year! -
What Happens At Christmas is the first novel by T.A. Williams that I have read, and what a lovely, heart warming story it told.
The book starts off with a prologue setting the story up, explaining that holly Brice had been summoned to a solicitors in order for a reading of her fathers will, a father that she hadn't seen or heard from in nearly 20 years.
The first shock for Holly is that he has left her his quaint cottage in a small Devon village, and the second was the rather large sum of money she was to inherit too.
The story is then told over a ten day period, with each chapter being a day leading up to Christmas. As Holly sets about sorting her fathers belongings, ready to sell the cottage, she gets acquainted to the other villagers who have nothing but nice words and high praise for her late father. Holly also becomes close to her neighbour, Jack, as well as forming a tight bond with Sterling, the dog her dad left behind.
Over the course of the week, Holly sorts through her fathers things and discovers a bundle of letters, one for every month since he last saw her, and as she starts to read them she starts to see and understand what happened. There is also a Christmas gift for her for every year that he was absent from her life.
With the bonds forming, Holly has to decide whether to leave her high flying London job and move to the country, or give up the house and dog that gives her such feeling of connection to her dad.
As her and Jack seem to get closer she senses something holding him back and the classic will they wont they you often get in a romace novel takes you right up to the tenth day - Do they get they Christmas wishes? Well you will have to read the book to find out!
What Happens At Christmas was a romantic, festive, feel good book, and although for me personally, the story was a little predictable, it was a nice light read, ideal for reading on a Sunday afternoon after a crazy week! -
First and foremost:
T.A. Williams is a guy. Yeah, I was surprised too. Shocked, more like. But pleasantly. If that makes sense.
What Happens at Christmas is yet another average Christmas story. One that you can leisurely curl up with over a cup of coffee and then put aside until your next cup. Obviously, that's perfectly fine, if that's what you're looking for. But fantasy has spoiled me. I can't seem to read slow easy novels now without craving the excitement and gripping suspense that comes with my usual favourites. I think I would even settle for a seriously hilarious novel with a swoon-worthy ship. But I didn't find that here.
I've come to the conclusion that Christmas romances should not be full length novels. Christmas is such a short season to begin with. If you try to drag it out into 200+ pages, it's bound to get boring. There was a bit of repetition in this novel. The romance, to me, seemed rushed. I did, however, really like the bittersweet manner in which Holly got to know her father. I also started seriously craving a dog. A shorter crisper novella with more focus on the romance would have been perfect. -
A lovely, romantic festive read. I enjoyed the way that Holly was able to get to know her dad after his death through the letters he left her and I liked reading about how she was integrated into her new community. Lovely that she took on her late dad's dog - wonderful canine character! Happy ending left me with a warm glow, bring on the mulled wine and carols!
-
A beautiful Christmas romance set in England. Holly goes to get her father's house ready for sale and meets the neighbor Jack. With Sterling her new dog they decide that village life is for them. Enjoyable and wholesome, this is a holiday romance to savor.

Why did I wait until now to read this????
I've read a lot of Christmas romances and have now found one of the few which will be on my list to re-read each year. Quite simply put, this is a beautiful read full of turkey, good wine, emotion-churning writing and love.
Don't do what I did. Buy it now and read it; you won't regret it. -
Harmless Christmas romance. I picked this book because I've been enjoying the Murder in Tuscany series. This one also features a dog, but note to self, I generally find romances a bit silly with all the "he's so hot/she's so hot" language. We're READERS for heaven's sake. We have brains. We're attracted to people with brains (any maybe a little bit of hotness 😉).

3.5 stars rounded up. Sweet Christmas story set in the English countryside with a gorgeous snowy landscape. Perfect book to get you in that Christmas spirit. Although some deep topics were approached, it still balances the mood to a cheerful ending.
-
A feel-good book that has a fairytale-like setting to me.
-
Perfect feel good read
-
A charming Christmas story set in picturesque Devon.
Although this is a romantic read it is also a journey of discovery about the father Holly never knew. -
A beautiful story of love and compassion with the right Christmas feeling.

What Happens at Christmas is a beautiful festive story that packed a real punch, with a surprisingly full of depth story evolving throughout the pages. I can always rely on Trevor’s books to put a smile on my face but this one, though it took me a little bit of time to really connect with it, felt more intriguing and thought-provoking than the rest with a more emotive story. Holly Brice has discovered her dad has died and she heads off to the cosy village of Dartmoor in Devon to sort out his house and try and learn more about the father she barely knew. She also finds she has inherited the house, along with a hefty trust fund and an adorable dog too. It’s a cliché but this book really sees main character Holly go on a journey of self-discovery, learning not only more about her childhood and her family but also herself, too. This theme runs all the way throughout the book and I felt like Trevor’s writing worked really well at drawing the reader in and it almost made me feel like I was a part of Holly’s life watching her come to terms with things, not just a bystander but someone who can clearly see the emotions she’s going through and the way her feelings are changing with every memory.
I loved the setting of Dartmoor and Trevor really brought it to life with all his little descriptions of not just the area but the community – the food, the drink, the weather and the history. Everything was beautifully described and detailed and really brought the story to life. As snow begins to fall, there’s a magical feel to the setting and it was truly lovely to read about. The chapters, set out across ten days, brought us closer to the approaching Christmas and I loved how the story became increasingly more festive as it went along. Simple touches early on like mentioning that the odds had shortened on a white Christmas or how each car coped (or didn’t cope) with snow teased the wintery feel I adore in Christmas book releases and it had me looking forward to seeing where Christmas would take the village and its residents.
I was engrossed by the mystery of Holly’s father and wanted to learn more and more about him. The titbits she learnt about him initially from the residents of Dartmoor peaked Holly’s, and my, interest because she had grown up angry towards him for walking out on her and her mum when she was just a child, yet the man people talk about to her sounds like a true gent, and a much-loved one at that. I loved finding out a little bit more about George and with every new detail, I craved more until I could build up a picture so vivid of Holly’s dad that it felt like he was a true, alive character in the book too.
Trevor’s books always feature a dog and I love meeting the new friendly companion every time I pick one of them up. The dog Holly has inherited from her father, Stirling, was my favourite of the lot. Time Holly spent with Stirling made her feel closer and more connected to her father and she picked up that dog-owner bond which is so sweet and endearing to read and Stirling really was the most adorable part of the story. He was a comfort to Holly but also a real character, vibrant and full of life and mischief. Right from the beginning, it’s evident that Holly is going to grow attached to him but you couldn’t blame her for that.
What Happens at Christmas sees Holly meet different men who all affect her new life in some way. Justin and Howard were both interesting characters that I wanted to learn more about but the man I enjoyed reading about the most was Jack, Holly’s new neighbour, who was a bit dreamy. Each character in this book was fascinating and had depth to them – though there were quite a few, there weren’t any that felt flat or under-developed. Holly herself was a character I really liked and connected with early on. I loved seeing her discover all the things she had in common with her father and found myself wondering how her approach to romance may change and whether she’d decide to move her life from London to Dartmoor. The book kept me intrigued throughout. What Happens at Christmas is a quick read but one that’s thoroughly worthwhile. Though it does have that cosy, obvious romantic element to it, the story possessed a lot more than that and it’s a touching festive story that well deserves a read this Christmas time.

T.A Williams is an author I have only recently discovered
( thanks to the power of the social media ) and I must say I am very pleased that I was accepted to review his latest addition to the book world because I immediately fall under the spell of his magical storytelling abilities.
Let me tell you why I love What Happens at Christmas...
When high-lying Holly learns about the death of her estranged father, she decides to take a trip down memory lane and finds out more about the father who disappeared out of her life when she was only seven years old.
Arriving in the sleepy but charming little Dartmoor village, Holly is shocked to discover that she's inherited not only his gorgeous cottage but also her father's adorable dog too.
Holly Brice, the leading lady of this story, is a strong and intelligent person with a penchant for driving classic cars! But the career-driven girl is also heartbroken by events that happened many years ago and irrevocably change the way she's lived her life up till now.
Holly decides to take the opportunity to found out more about her father, and she is amazed to see that her father was a very much loved and well-respected member of the community.
With a few little surprises, Holly can finally to imagine a picture of her father's life after he moved away from his young family. I loved watching Holly taking care of her little canine friend Sterling, the only link to her father, and slowly growing very fond of him. Sterling was a fabulous addition to the story, and he certainly made himself a very useful companion, providing support for Holly in such a tough time.
Other three principal protagonists in this story captured Holly's heart, every one of them in a different way. Because of Jack, Justin, and the eccentric Howard Redgrave, Holly can move on and probably even forgive both parents. Holly has been carrying some pretty emotional baggage from the time of her father's departure, and she firmly believes that she was also deprived of a person she loved from the bottom of her heart. Therefore Holly's established some rules in life, and one of them was -NO long term commitment, No deep feelings. But as the time gets closer to Chrismas Holly is starting to warm up to the possibility of finding a new life in the country and with the three man and one dog eager to help her in every possible way Holly might even change her mind about a few things.
I adored this book. The feel-good aspect of it mixed with lots of emotion and some heartbreak. I loved the way all the villagers welcomed Holly with open arms and with their support, love and encouragement Holly is learning the truth behind her father's selfish actions.
Once I started reading, I got swept away on a current of the captivating storyline, the description of the village and its surroundings and warmness of all the protagonists.
I highly recommend this gorgeous Christmassy read! -

This was a lovely Christmas themed novel about a young woman learning about the father she grew up without. Holly was single-handedly raised by her mother from the time she was 7 because her father left them. Holly grew up believing that her father was a terrible man that basically disappeared on them and never looked back, but when she learns that he recently passed, she goes to visit his hometown to say goodbye, get closure in her life and be read his will. Holly slowly comes to learn that the man she always thought poorly of for leaving them, turns out to have actually been a fabulous man, adored by the entire town he lived in. Holly finds out he left her everything in his will, including a large sum of money in addition to his home in Devon. Holly has to decide if she wants to sell the home and continue her life in London, or move into the only place she has left of the father, including a large dog that she has become fast friends with that she doesn’t want to give up. Although she never really had the chance to know her father, she has grown to love him through stories about him from his friends and neighbors and through letters that he wrote her that were never delivered.
What Happens at Christmas is a humorous, interesting story about coming into an inheritance, a home and a town filled with really lovely characters, great friends, a possible love interest, and a great big lovely dog named Stirling. The main theme of this novel is about overcoming previous emotional baggage, making important life decisions, and ultimately, about love. Holly pretty much chewed up and spat out the men she used to date and none of them lasted past date number three. This is the first time anyone has made it past that marker and it could have a lot to do with her recent discovery of her father and the situation surrounding his depature from her life. Her father was a good man that had to make a difficult decision that would come to haunt and torture him his entire life. Holly was one of his true loves, and by learning about him through the letters he left her, she’s finally able to open her heart to the possibility of love, even if that means the possibility of hurt and disappointment if that love were ever lost. This novel had a bit of suspense and intrigue, and was an overall charming story from start to finish.
5 stars for this charming Christmas tale. Another wonderfully written novel by T.A. Williams <3 -
I am so happy that I got to read this book. It was so heart warming and really got me into the Christmas spirit.
It was full of drama, friendship, love, loyalty, heartbreak in some cases and just really warms your heart. It also had some heart stopping moments where you would find yourself holding your breath anticipating what is going to happen next and these cases I really couldn’t put it down. This in my eyes makes a really good romance book.
The storyline was not to far fetched and kept a good and steady pace from the on set and throughout.
If truthfully honest it did take me a couple of chapters in to really get into it but once I got over that I really warmed to the story and started to connect with the characters especially the main character Holly.
Moving on to the characters…
There are quite a few characters within the story who do play a significant part in Holly’s life.
Holly I really connected with as I found her very similar to me. At the beginning of the book she is very unsure about what to do and seems to be focusing on finding out about her father as she never really knew him or so she thinks.
But as she moves to the village for the Christmas period and talks to the villagers and slowly gets to know who her father actually was and the reasons why he left, you see her slowly begin to relax and she realises that she maybe more like her father than she thought.
There are number of other characters in the story that play a strong part in Holly’s time in the village whether that be Jack her very handsome neighbour, the very suave Justin, the loving Mr Redgrave or her crazy friend Julia and of course not forgetting the lovable Labrador Stirling. To me I found all the characters just as loveable and relatable as Holly and they all seemed to help Holly in some way whether that be to make a decision what to do or getting to know who her late father was.
This was my first novel by Trevor Williams, which I really enjoyed. I liked his writing style, story idea and just how lovely the story followed from the beginning right to the last page. I will definitely be reading more of his books as they are very light hearted, easy reads which are my favourite.
I highly recommend that you read this heart warming, enchanting book which will really get you into the Christmas spirit and ready for these cold winter days a head. -
3.5 stars
It may not be Christmas any longer, but is there ever a bad time of year to enjoy a sweet Christmas romance story?
Holly is summoned to the quaint village of Dartmoor to claim her inheritance from her estranged and dead father: the cottage he owned. She has distant, dim memories of happy years with her father, but his marriage to her mother ended badly, her mother left emotionally scarred and bitter. Holly never saw her father again, and now, as she stays in his Dartmoor home, she feels his loss most painfully. Was there more to her father than she knew? Could her mother's experiences with him have tainted Holly's memories?
Dartmoor proves to be a healing place, perhaps because its denizens are quirky in that English village sort of way. Holly is particularly drawn to Jack, her father's neighbor and a man who seems interested in her yet also clearly is hiding his own painful past.
Holly makes herself at home in Dartmoor, surprising only herself. She also begins to learn more about her father and the reasons he left her mother, and she feels her heart break a little bit with each new piece of information. She regrets her lost time with her father, yet she also realizes that it was largely out of her control. She was a devoted daughter to her mother, although the more she comes to understand about her parents' marriage, the more she finds herself upset with some of her mother's decisions.
Jack and his fellow villagers help Holly get to know her father in absentia, and this helps her heal. She also gets to know herself a little better, discovering who she is meant to be.
The romance between Holly and Jack proceeds slowly and cautiously, He's very mysterious, which of course is part of his allure, but he's also clearly a caring, kind man. He likes Holly, even if he doesn't seem quite sure how to respond to that. You can't help but like the guy, and you can't help but like Holly and the rest of Dartmoor.
This book will make you feel warm and fuzzy, and it will make you want to find your own quaint cottage in a quaint English village. It's perfect for these chilly winter months, but, really, it will work in the summer, too.

I loved this superb story from the very first page to the very end. It is an enthralling read about the revelations made by a young lady discovering why her father disappeared from her life when she was only seven years old. Tragically this is brought about because he has died without ever seeing her, but he's made her the main beneficiary. She's been bitter about him vanishing from her life all those years ago but was unaware of why it happened and has had no contact with him since. As she explores his old home, she makes discoveries that will directly impact on her future and her memories of her once beloved father. As she meets people who knew him, she has to revise her opinions about him and come to terms with how her mother's actions impacted on all their lives. She also gets to know some of the delightfully quirky friends he had in the village and makes some of her own. This makes her question her own life choices, making her reevaluate her own life choices and enables her to unlock not only her own heart. This is a story of love lost and found, poignant and profound whilst also funny, entertaining and uplifting!
As I read this story I was actually sat for some of the time watching surfers out on the rolling waves of the Atlantic - but the temperatures here were much warmer than th characters in the story experienced . If you read the story you'll see why this was so appropriate! I also had in my head a picture of the author tasting and thoroughly enjoying some of the wines described in the story, images of which he also used to promote the book on Twitter - what a brilliant excuse! The story has many characters who are well developed, with histories which impinge on their relationships past, present and future. Their stories are interwoven in a seamless manner to create a beautiful, delightful and endearing tale that I thoroughly enjoyed and have no hesitation in highly recommending to anyone who enjoys exploring lives, village life, family histories and, of course, romance together with a taste of West Country village life as the festive season approaches.
Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley, too, for letting me read an ARC of this book in exchange for this, an honest review. -
What Happens at Christmas is set in a cosy village in Dartmoor, Devon. As a reader, I could just imagine a picturesque village in the middle of the wild expanses of moorland, full of warm and welcoming villagers – the perfect location for a festive novel. The author brings the setting to life and creates a magical setting for the story.
The main protagonist, Holly Brice, has just discovered that her long-estranged father has died and she heads off to Devon to sort out his belongings. She soon finds herself the owner of a little village house and a mischievous dog, Stirling. Festive novels often carry a theme of self-discovery and this one is no exception. Having had a somewhat unsettled childhood, Holly finds herself slowly feeling as though she has found somewhere she belongs, particularly when she realises how well-respected her late father was in the village. It is not long before Holly starts to re-evaluate her plans and her future.
The mystery surrounding Holly’s estrangement from her father and his real reason for leaving is intriguing. As Holly slowly finds out more about him from the villagers, her interest is piqued and she realises that he may not be quite as bad as she has always been led to believe.
As Holly settles into the village and Christmas approaches, she meets three men, Jack, Justin and Howard, who end up being important to her in different ways. It was interesting to read about the friendships developing between Holly and these men. Each chapter gives a little bit more insight into those supporting characters – Justin (gentlemanly and newly separated), Jack (the hunky neighbour) and Howard (the suave older gentleman) - and I found this aspect of the story to be quite fascinating. All the characters felt well-developed and relatable.
The story captured my interest from the start and continues at a good pace, leaving no time for the reader to get bored.
This book draws the reader into a cosy, welcoming tale of families, friendships, romance and festive fun. What Happens at Christmas is a touching and entertaining read that will leave you looking forward to spending Christmas day with your own family and friends.
