Great book that showcases the imaginations of kids. And the care that teachers give their students to ensuring their needs are met, whether the child knows it or not.

    LOVED the ending. Fun book!

    Lol cute funny book!

    Great hook for:
    - What did you do on your summer break?
Could be a project where you tell the truth or make up it up.
    -Making your own treasure hunt
    -Teaching hyperbole

    For budding authors:
Would be a good one for budding picture book authors to mimic and create their own.

This is a hilarious picture book and quick read, 10 minutes....It's a take on that beginning of school year routine: what did you do over the summer? This kid has an imagination . He tells the teacher about his adventures after he found a treasure map in a bottle at the beach. It's a great cause and effect book with great illustrations. Good twist at the end will tickle a teacher's funny bone....

So the book sparked my teacher brain with a simple writing activity. What if, after reading this book, and showing a bottle with a rolled up treasure map in it, you had students write/ draw a narrative which is mostly true about their summer. They can add some adventures that aren't true. Then when reading aloud, other students guess the fibs at the end. There's a lot you could do with that treasure map deal.....

Following the same structure of student favorites, I Didn't Do My Homework Because... & What Happened on the Way to School..., this pair again creates a laugh out loud circular story with engaging illustrations. Thus one's surprise ending left me smiling. One of my favorite writing assignments for my middle schoolers was to make their own versions of these type of ridiculous excuse circular stories.

When his teacher asks the typical question about summer vacation, a dark-haired white boy spins an outlandish tale involving a treasure map, a hot-air balloon and mischievous magpie. I love the way that the teacher never criticizes him for his imagination and storytelling--the ending made me laugh out loud!

This book deserves at least two or three reads. The size of the book is smaller than I thought it would be, so taking time to really inspect the illustrations adds to your understanding and appreciation of the story. It would be a good text to use in demonstration of how artwork conveys a message that a reader can't get from the words alone.

When a lady asks a boy what he did during his summer, she gets quite a fantastical tale! There's a giant squid, a submarine, an air balloon, and more! The ending is a fun twist. The best part of this book is the illustrations by Benjamin Chaud, which are delightful and add an element of fun to the story.

This is a good read aloud for the beginning of the school year. A way to get students to open up in their new classroom and with a new teacher. It's great for class discussion and as a introduction to a writing prompt.

I didn't even know this was coming out (July 5th!) but was eager to read it since I loved the other two books in the series. Super silly answer to "What did you this summer?" Fans of Remy Charlip's Fortunately will enjoy the sense of humor. I love Benjamin Chaud's illustrations!

Cute - a fantastical story about what a boy did during his summer. This would be a good back to school selection for younger school age kids.

Hmmn. This is a beautifully illustrated small book with a sentence per page, but it is not a classic early reader in that the vocabulary is often challenging. A boy asked about his summer recounts a fantastic adventure - he chased all over the world a treasure map snatched by a magpie from his grasp. Those familiar with Chaud's large format picture books featuring bear will appreciate the details and whimsy. I found the story profound, with a reveal at the end that should spark conversation and debate. My great regret is that there is NO ethnic diversity at all, even in the crowd scenes. Despite traveling the world, every human shown is paper white.

must read for sure ...so cute. i love these illustrations!! what fun!! i found it through my local library leaning program. now i read it though my kindle FIRE so it is amazing with this feature of being about to enlarge the illustrations and text ...but guess what these are made so it is easily read no problems like some kindle FIRE reads. i don't know of other kindles but my is great! please it!! well done. so cool!! five stars and more. way cool!

This is so cute. I actually really like the little size of this book. It made it really comfortable and easy to hold for a bedtime story. The illustrations were fun and my 3 yo loved how the adventure changed with each page. He also loved pointing out the dog sidekick and the magpie. Five stars and two thumbs up for the adorable illustrations and cute ending.

Great for back to school time! Beautiful detailed illustrations. I think this could be a hit with my upper elementary students. Kids can write or illustrate their own imaginative version of what they did over the summer.

A student tells his teacher about what happened during his vacation, which gets progressively wilder and less credible as it progresses. Can the teacher possibly believe him?
Great, vivid illustration and funny, creative story. Love the ending.

4.5 tähte. Nii tore raamat. Mõnus lugu, väga loominguline ja fantaasiarikas. Illustratsioonid on samuti vapustavad.

  • Anais919

Question we all have to answer upon returning to school in September, "What did you do for your summer vacation?" So you find a map which is stolen and you end up on a worldwide chase for your treasure! I hope my summer is this exciting! Will your teacher believe you? Love the ending!

Exactly what you're hoping for from the cover: a tall tale with quirky art. An older child tells a grown-up about their summer, which consists of following a treasure map out to sea, to a desert and a tropical island, encountering pirates and giant squids and mummies and such.
