    Title: Secrets in Phoenix
    Series: Phoenix Holt #1
    Author: Gabriella Lepore
    Genre: YA, Witch-y read, fantasy
Overall Rating: ALL OF THE STARS

As a lot of people that read my reviews or know me in general know that I love Gabriella Lepore's writing, so you can all imagine my excitement when I heard Ben from Benjaminoftomes announcing this book...and that he was publishing it! Firstly, that in itself is an incredible achievement so shoutout to him.

    Now to the book.

The cover is beautiful. Truly and properly beautiful. It's something I could look at for hours, it's so detailed and professional! Kudos!

When Sophie, Sam and Todd Ballester's grandfather dies, they have to leave their home in the beautiful Port Dalton (*insert me cheering*) to move to Phoenix Holt to live with their great aunt Ness.

However when they find a room filled with mysterious items and books...they figure out that maybe nothing is as it seems. And that the normal life that they led has come to an end.

    I FREAKING LOVED THIS BOOK.

Sophie is such a good girl main character. She wasn't a damsel in distress and yes there was romance but that didn't overshadow everything in her life. She still thought about her family which was amazing, do you know how rare it is to find a solid heroine who doesn't put a man she met yesterday before her family? I've read a lot of books and it's rare.

But that's what was achieved with this book.

I even loved Sam and Todd, Todd held a special place in my heart because he thought people liked Sam better and that's just not nice. What a precious little cinnamon bun, too good, too pure.

As for Jaxon, can I claim him as my book boyfriend please? Yes? Okay thank you.

All I'm saying on that matter.

I'm just so happy with this book! A good book really can change your whole mood! I'm going to bed with a smile on my face tonight, I loved it and I'm so pumped for more work by this amazing author. Go support Oftomes and Gabriella Lepore because we're all book lovers together here!

  • Bianca {Until The Last Page}

I've had the ebook copy of this for months but it's only now that I was able to read it. I actually can't remember how I discovered Secrets in Phoenix but I remember hoarding ebooks published by Oftomes when they went on sale on Amazon. Well, I'm glad that I took that opportunity!

All orphans, Sophie together with her two older twin brothers, used to live with their grandfather in Port Dalton. Upon the sudden death of their guardian, they had to move to Phoenix Holt to be under the care of their great-aunt Ness. Right away, they continued school there but no sooner have they realized that they're like outcasts and were treated differently. From then on, they started discovering mysterious things about their new guardian, their school, their teachers and their schoolmates. And this is where the adventure began. The story-telling was fantastic and full of suspense.

I was really hooked and very interested that it was hard for me to put this down. I was also intrigued by Sophie's mentor and classmate, Jaxon who doesn't speak much and likes to keep to himself. But I was a bit disappointed though that there was an "instacrush" / "instalove" that happened between the two. Sophie just couldn't stop thinking about him since their first meeting. I would've also preferred it if the times they spent together were more detailed to show the growth in their friendship/relationship, and not just by a few paragraphs in the middle of the book stating that they spent most of their time getting to know each other (not the exact words, but you know the gist). It would've been nicer if I (the reader) was made witness in those conversations so at least I could've learned more about them.

Even though I wasn't able to connect with the characters, I really enjoyed reading this book. I liked the plot, the overall feel and how it focuses not just on the love story but also the importance of family. It's not all the time that I get to read family-oriented fantasy books, so this is a really nice change.

Following unprecedented events, Sophie Ballester and her elder twin brothers move to Phoenix Holt. Upon their arrival however, they find themselves wrapped up in a mystery, one that seems to lie with the town's very inhabitants. As the siblings work to uncover the truth, they find that they may unearth more than they bargained for....

I received a free Kindle copy of Secrets In Phoenix from Of Tomes Publishing in exchange for an honest review. I loved this book! Gabriella Lepore crafts an intriguing tale filled with mystery, action and suspense. I especially admired Lepore's writing style which made for a fast-paced read that easily captivated me, leaving me pining for more. I eagerly await more tales set in Phoenix Holt. I highly recommend this book to all interested. A five-star read hands down!

  • Krystal

Loved the twins! Good story and quite funny in some parts (you're too short. I thought you'd have grown more by now) haha. I kept picturing Jaxon as Evan Peters from american horror story weeeet wooo :)

    My Thoughts:
I didn't want this book to finish. I loved every second of it. I completed this book in around a day with 5 hours of reading time in it. I didn't want to put it down! We meet Sophie, Sam and Todd who are twin brothers and sister, I could tell immediately that I would like the family relationship they had going on. I related to them through my own relationship I have with my brother at home, the jokes, the “bullying”, the protectiveness, the envy (on some occasions). I loved these people as characters and felt like I knew them. The plot was fast paced and so easy to read and enjoyable. Jaxon was a likeable character as well, I liked the way you could tell the romance was going to blossom and that it could of been dangerous for either off them. Even though I had a feeling I knew how it was going. The way that Gabriella writes I really didn't mind at all. The supernatural elements of this story were awesome and I liked how we got ‘two’ stories in one with the background story of Wilbar and Jaxon and the town itself.

This is another one of her books I read so quickly because it was an amazing story and I love her writing style. She is sat right on top of my auto buy authors list.

I would defiantly recommend this book and Gabriella as an author to anyone.

    Overall:

    GO. READ. THIS. BOOK.

  • Glass Fairy

I really enjoyed this book! which didn't surprise me as I've read Gabriella's The Witches of The Glass Castle, and that was such a wonderful book!
This story centres around a young girl, Sophie, in her mid teens and her two older twin brothers, Sam and Todd (I loved Sam, but damn did I want to smack him sometimes when it came to Todd, poor guy!)
The book starts off with them all on a train to go an live with their aunt Ness, after there guardian and grandfather passed away.
Turns out there's a shocking, not-so-shocking secret that she is a descendent in a line of powerful witches, and Phoenix Holt is a town that 'raises' warriors (did you see that pun? Don't get it? Good! Read the book, you'll be having no spoilers from me ;D)
So our young Sophie starts to bond with one of these warrior boys, Jaxon, and as their friendship blossoms and unfolds their attraction to each other becomes harder to ignore.
This was a sweet and very innocent relationship, hence why I liked it so much I think, far too many girls in YA books are sex crazed, Sophie was a nice lovely teenager, exploring a friendship with a boy and developing her first crush, it was so cute if this book had cheeks I would pinch them :D
I think the main reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is because it all seems to happen within the space of about 4 days, which is insane for the amount everyone goes through, I understand it's a small book, but this had the potential to be huge, spanning a few weeks at the very least!
But that's just my opinion :) I loved the innocence and overall feel of the book, but in some parts it felt a little too hurried

Secrets in Phoenix is by far my favourite book of 2015. This is the first I have read by Gabriella and I instantly fell in love with her writing. I was addictied to this from the first page. I had to keep reading to find out what was going to happen. Sophie, Sam and Todd were all great characters in their own way and I loved how their story developed. Jaxon was my favouritr character and he was portrayed so well. I loved that although he had his problems he still had a sensitive and caring side to him. The plot of the story was well though out and captivated me from page one and I found that I had to keep on reading to see what direction the plot was going. The writing style alone was amazing and add that to a great plot with great characters and we were left with a great novel.
I found that once I had stopped reading I had to take a breath and just have a moment to think abouy what just happened in the story. It was one off these moments where I was left speechless so I had to wait a little while before I could write this review because the book was that good.
I also want to say that the cover is stunning and that is mainly what drew me to read this book. It is simple yet inticing and just gives the impression that the book is going to be good which it was.
I think that this story could easily be turned into a series that I would read for sure. I am a bit sad that Secrets of Phoenix is finished but I have hope that there will be a sequel so that keeps me happy.
All in all I was captivated from the first page and loved every minute I read off this book and I couldnt put it down.
Everyone you need to read this book.

  • Cameo

Secrets in Phoenix was an intriguing, magical, page-flipping read. I was captivated from the start, and vividly swept into the pages, as its secrets were slowly revealed.
I traveled to Phoenix Holt, to Aunt Ness’ cabin nestled in the wood, with the Ballester children… and escaped into a world filled with suspense, mystery, romance, danger, and laughter.
The different personlaities and love shared by the siblings was endearing, and what can I say about Jaxon. I’d LOVE for him to be my mentor!
This is definitely a book I highly recommend for both teens and adults. I can’t wait for the next one. You don’t want to miss it!

I've been in the worst reading slump of late (dear books, it's not you its me - just brain-fried I think) - and so Ben of Tomes sent me over this book as a cheer-me-up!! Annnnnd...I loved it. Very fun. Very cute. It's a rather enchanting story that promptly evoked the same whimsy as Harry Potter and Tuesday's at the Castle combined with the adventure of a good witchy-superhero book!!!! Seriously, my inner 14-year-old was breathless. I read it in one day and now I want another please!!!!!!

  • Alexis Johnson

    OH MY GOSH!

I loved everything about this book! EVERYTHING! Besides Rueben...yeah, I don't like him. But JAXON!!!!!!!!!!! I love love love love love love love love love this book! I'd recommend it to everyone. And 5 stars because, it is amazing! And Gabriella Lepore did an amazing, awesome, amazing job writing it!!!!!

  • zaheerah

me: k I'll read a couple pages but then I need to write my extended project essay which is due next Thursday
me: finishes the book in a day

for now, let's just say OFSTED would not be pleased at the standard of teaching at this school. ( I also enjoyed this one waaay more than How I Found You)

When fifteen year old Sophie is sent, alongside her twin brothers, to a remote village and enrolled in a strange boarding school by their Great Aunt Ness, they never expected to find a hidden room which reveals that the residents of Phoenix Holt are anything but ordinary. And neither is her family.

I have to say I was extremely impressed with this one from Lapore. She seems to have this ongoing thing with witches in her novel, and since she has so many, I went in reading thinking it was going to be waay similar to How I Found You. But it wasn't. And I certainly preferred this one than How I Found You.

It was a fun and energetic read from Lapore as we follow Sophie and her polar opposite twin brothers Sam and Todd in a journey to Phoenix Holt from their home of Port Dalton. I really enjoyed her writing style, it's simple yet descriptive that you're not overwhelmed by the language. What I really enjoyed were the moments between all three siblings, they played pranks, treated each other like crap, but at the end of the day showed that they cared for each other. It was just a nice difference compared to other YA I've read recently where siblings don't exist or just distant to the storyline.

However, I wish there was a better development between Sophie and Jaxon. I know it would develop in the next novels, but it felt quite plain but I did enjoy Jaxon's past which was really interesting. I also did have an issue with the boarding school. It was boys only, but it was never addressed why? Since the reason behind them being there is a massive spoiler, I won't say, but it was confusing as to why no girls were there.

Overall, an interesting novel about witches, family and just the beginning of what Gabriella is capable of doing with this world.

Secrets in Phoenix was a fast-paced, fun, and energetic read that I found myself unable to put down. Sophie and her brothers, the ever-opposite twins Sam and Todd, are on their way to Phoenix Holt from their beloved home of Port Dalton. Unfortunately, their grandfather has passed away, leaving them in the care of their great aunt Ness, whom they've never met.

The trio is timid, unsure of what to expect, and if you ask me, they are met with nothing short of awesome. A new school, where learning consists of archery and classes of the 'dark arts' sort, an aunt who lets them do as they please, and a house with a secret room full of witchy stuff.

Oh, and a very hot, very brooding mentor for Sophie.

What I enjoyed most about this book were its frequent moments of genuine hilarity. The relationship Sophie shares with her brothers is so pure, so realistic, that I wanted more. They loved each other, yet it wasn't this perfect kind of love that acted the way teens are "supposed" to act. They played pranks on each other, treated each other like dirt at times, and got into some class-a trouble, but at the end of the day proved they would lay down their life for the other.

Perfect, and an amazing message to anyone with a sibling.

There was also quite a bit of heart in this book. Sophie and her brothers struggle to adjust to 'home' life in this new town, and it's through moving on and accepting that their grandfather is gone but not forgotten when they truly become happy again.

All in all, I wished only that the author would have spent more time developing Jaxon and Sophie, giving us more time to understand the connection, but I have a feeling that will come in the second book, which I totally cannot wait for!

I highly recommend Secrets in Phoenix to lovers of stories with strong family bonds, witches, themes of overcoming loss, and moments of pure and utter comedy (perfectly timed comedy, at that)!

    *4.5 STARS*
First of all thanks to the author for sending me a paperback edition of this awesome book, I really appreciated it! This book was my very first witch book and I have to say, it was good..very good.
I LOVED THE WRITING STYLE, it was just so easy to read and therefore fast paced AND very very funny.
I also liked Sophie as a protagonist, she was seriously so funny and I could understand why she did the things she did or thought about the things she thought about. Her twin brothers were so much fun to read about, they were so funny especially Sam, I loved that there were those funny moments but also the ones where they just talked about what they truly think and how they feel. Now Jaxon .. I liked him, but I did not LOVE him. He was kind of weird in the beginning but he grew on me and he was funny and cute. But there were times where I was scared that this would turn into some kind of insta love, because as soon as Sophie talked with him / to him (because he did not even answer at the beginning) she liked him and really wanted to know him, but idk if I talk to someone and this person does not answer I would just let it go and be like : okay, you clearly do not want to talk to me. But yeah whatever..
The aspect with the "soldiers" was really interesting and intriguing.
The ending .. I like it BUT idk it was also kind of weird and as soon as Reuben came into the room I knew something was wrong and well I KNEW IT.
But yeah, all in all it was very enjoyable and I definitely recommend it!

World filled with Demon, Witches and Warriors with a coming of age journey, definitely a recommendation!

I absolutely BLEW through this book! Though the first ten to fifteen pages were a little rough for me (probably more because of my complete book slump right now, less to do with Gabriella), as soon as we figure out that there is a little more to Phoenix Holt than previously expected, I was hooked. Sophie and her brothers are absolutely fantastic characters, and I'm in love with them from page one until the very last page. This book is dark, but fun, sexy but romantic, and a thrill through the entire story. It has twists and turns when I least expected them and I absolutely love Jaxon (thanks Gabriella for another book boyfriend...I so did not need one). I loved that I thought I had an idea of what was going on ...and then I was so completely wrong. I absolutely LOVE that. Definitely an amazing book and I'm proud of Gabriella and OfTomes...a great way to kick off this publishing company! Its a STEAL on Amazon and a seriously quick read, once you're hooked, you can't stop! Definitely get your hands on this!

This book is perfect. Great characters who are really liable and relatable. After only a few chapters I loved all the characters and was immersed into the world and didn't want to leave.

Gabriella Lepore did any amazing job. The writing is perfect, packed with loads of action and adventure with dashes of humour. Will definitely be checking out other books by Gabriella.

A great read for anyone who loves a story about magic and witches. Even if you don't like witches or magical reads, still give this book a read, it's brilliant.

  • Yasamin

Initially gave this a 3 star review but I'm upping it to a 4 star. I did really enjoy this. One thing I have to say - Gabriella Lepore is a fantastic author. Her writing style is captivating and kept me interested throughout the book! I've read books by better known authors that were not definitely not written as well as Secrets in Phoenix (previously Phoenix Holt).

    Full review to come! :)

**This book was sent to me in exchange for my honest, unbiased review**

I have never read anything by Gabriella Lepore. To be honest, I'd only known about her through YouTube videos and other author friends. It wasn't until I was presented with the opportunity to read this book that I realized what I had been missing out on.

I am beyond happy that I got to experience this read, if only for the fact that it introduced me to an author that I am very interested in reading more from. But there was also an emotional element within this book that grabbed me from the very beginning. And I knew that I was in for something that was very special.

SECRETS IN PHOENIX shares the story of the Ballester siblings, Sophie and her twin brothers, Sam and Todd. They are moved from their childhood home after their grandfather passes, to the new and different town of Phoenix Holt, where they meet their Great Aunt Ness and a slew of other interesting characters. Phoenix Holt holds a history and secrets beyond the Ballester siblings wildest imaginations. And they just moved right to the center of it all.

As I've already mention, I had a great time with this book. I'm not someone who is taken with beautiful words. I'm not a prose enthusiast. And that's not to say that Gabriella didn't write this story beautifully. But what really grabs me is the character presentation. How deep the characters' personalities run and how they interact with those around them. And I was completely enthralled with how these characters did all of the above. Sophie, though every bit of a teenage girl, was a smart one who kept me on my toes. Her brothers made me chuckle, but they also reminded me of normal brothers who messed around. I knew I would get great satisfaction from the relationships between these three from the very beginning.

Another thing that I was taken with immediately was the premise. That is why I even started reading the book. While I had NO idea what the story was about, my interest in reading about three uprooted siblings going to a strange new town? That interested me. It had a paranormal vibe all over it.

The thing to know about this book -- you really will have NO idea what's going on until Lepore reveals it to you. And the cool part about it, the reader finds out what's going on when the characters find out what's going on. Neither the reader or the siblings know more than they other. And that is not only difficult to do, but it's difficult to do WELL. And Lepore nailed it. Sure, there are breadcrumbs that are dropped along the way, but not a single time can I say that I knew 100% what was going on throughout the story. The plot was a well kept secret, if I do say so.

The supporting cast of characters are another win for me. From Jaxon to Ness to many, many more -- they all played a crucial role in, not only the progression of the plot, but also the personal development of our main characters. It was fantastic.

There was, of course, a bit of romance within the book. And I have to say that while I could have easily gotten turned off by who it was between, Lepore did a great job of selling it to me. It didn't swing beyond my realm of believability. In fact, I was rooting for the two characters. It was done in the most tasteful of ways, without taking away from the story. The romantic element, in my opinion, only enhanced the plot as it progressed. It didn't, for a single moment, take away from the real intention behind the story -- which was about having three siblings learn about who they were and where they were living.

I could honestly go on and on about this story, but I think that it needs to be read in order for the full experience to be had.

Gabriella Lepore has gained a new supporter in me and I cannot wait to read more. My next question -- is there more to come from this world?! I must know!

Secrets In Phoenix, perfect for those seeking a story full of mystery, magic and romance! I have fallen absolutely in love with this story! With the feel of Harry Potter and the epic romance of Twilight, I never wanted this story to end!

I was excited to learn that this book takes place in the UK, in a sleepy, mysterious little town called Phoenix Holt. Within the town of Phoenix Holt lies Averett Academy. Let's just say that there are some interesting things (and characters) going on within the walls of the academy. There are a few more surprises going on with Sophie's new school, but you'll have to discover them when you read the book!

Not only did I love the setting, I also loved the immensely descriptive details!

"The leaves on the trees were bronzed with the first traces of autumn, and some lay scattered over the ground like crisp red moats circling the broad tree trunks."

Speaking of characters, the protagonist, Sophie meets Jaxon, a fellow student who is assigned with the task of being her mentor. I just loved him! Not to mention their funny but flirty back-and-forth banter.

"My stomach gave a flutter. ''What's wrong with what?" I answered in an inferior squeak.
"The door,'' said Jaxon, smiling carefully.
"Nothings wrong with the door," I replied. I glanced at it. "I was just about to...um...go through it."
"You have to open it first,'' Jaxon said in a wry murmur. "Like this." He reached past me and clasped the brass handle."
I snuck a peek at him as he leaned around me. He wore an untucked shirt and a loosely knotted tie. His eyes smouldered grey and his sandy-coloured hair looked windswept. And he smelled incredible.
"See?'' he teased. "You open it, and then you can go through it. That's how doors work.''

Another thing I found enlightening was the British spelling. Before reading this I had no idea that English was spelled differently in the UK! I actually researched this and found out it's because in the 18th century there were no standards for English spelling.

All in all Secrets In Phoenix is a magical, gripping and fast read! If you're in a reading slump this book is a sure remedy! This is my first Gabrielle Lepore book and she's now one of my favorite authors!

ENCHANTING ・ MYSTERIOUS ・ IMPECCABLE WRITING

Sophie and her twin brothers, Sam and Todd, had recently lost their grandfather who was their caretaker since their parents died when they were young. Their grandfather was estranged from the rest of his family. His sister, the last remaining relative of the children's, offered to take them in. Quickly after arriving at their aunt's, they realized there was a lot they had not known about their family history. The children were sent to a strange school where secrets started to unravel. Sophie met an unusual boy, Jaxon, who had more ties to her family than she could have imagined.

The quality of the writing in this was excellent especially for a self published novel. If I hadn't known better I wouldn't have assumed this was self published. Overall I enjoyed the story. It was a quick, easy read. The best part of the story was Jaxon. I was drawn to him from the first encounter. His background and relationship with Sophie were the most intriguing parts of the book.

The downside of the story was that the family secret was easy to figure out. There was not enough build up to keep me in suspense. The children adapted to their new surroundings too quickly and easily. They didn't grieve much for their grandfather or their old lives, which seemed odd. This was a YA novel, so maybe I was expecting more depth to the story than I should have.

  • Meghan

I did not see that coming. Really that one sentence sums up my reaction to the book . . .which makes me incredibly happy! Some of the story is very straight forward, but other parts of the story make you think something has to be a certain way to only find out later that you were oh so wrong.

I enjoyed the writing style, the descriptive languages and the use of magic in this story. All three created the world of Phoenix Holt and brought it to life. When the story talks about the Phoenix sculptures, the angry eyes, the cemetery scenes and more I picture it playing out in my mind. The youth of the boarding school is the big shocker to me...I mean all boy schools (not that surprising)...what the school's mission is and how the boy were admitted...that got my attention!

If you like books that have a bit of a suspense, leave you wondering what will happen, are very descriptive and involve the YA crowd I would recommend you go try this story out! It was the first time I read a book by Gabriella Lepore, but it won't be the last:)

Just wow! I honestly couldn't put this book down (I even read it whilst walking)
I don't think I've ever read a book about phoenixes and now I know that I'm missing out!
Such an incredible mix of characters and a plot that had me guessing up until the last minute!!
Safe to say I completely and utterly love Sam, as well as Sophie in who I have finally found a character who matches my level of real-life awkward ramblings haha
I haven't laughed at a novel the amount I did at this one in a long time, a refreshing change of pace in this genre too!
I highly anticipate the sequel to this fantastic novel!...

Sophie Ballester and Jesse Jaxon are goals. They're in love and they are not going to let Ness get between them. (No Spoiler) knowing Sophie would do such a thing not only for her brothers Todd and Sam but Jaxon too is moving.
The twins Sam and Todd remind me of the Weasley twins from Harry Potter, funny, sarcastic but protective of their sister. secrets in phoenix has both Witchcraft and Romance which definitely floats my boat
if I didn't have such a big TBR pile, I would so definitely read this again!

  • Bailey Marissa

(4.7) Edward Cullens wishes he was Jaxon. Jaxon is mysterious without being obnoxious and rude, and you have no idea how happy that makes me.

The twins were great - they had the stereotypical twin tendencies, yet they were also two separate people. And I love them.

Sophie was fun, and once "The Reveal" happened, she didn't become some weird Mary-Sue "I can do everything correctly without having to be taught anything" person. She did the best she could and gave it her all.

14+ for magic, some language, and romance that isn't sexual/too physical.
