A little disappointing coming from her record "Lessons in Love". I was hoping for insight into the aging process from a women who struck me as being terribly self aware about most thing and who doesn't shy away from the most off the wall topics. Well, it isn't a bad book but it reads more like an instruction manual, and not how to take utilize "old age" or discuss responsibilities of your new status but basically how to go on living as you always have, albeit with some compromises.

More of a autobiography at times, I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone who isn't already a fan of Helen Gurly Brown and just wants insight into her life.

I purchased this book many years ago from the "Withdrawn" shelf at my favorite library. I wasn't over 50 at the time, far from it, but really enjoyed the book for the author's honest accounting of how she deals with the aging process. I would have liked to pass it on to my mother, but I know she would have been put off by some of the statements and language. No doubt about it, Ms. Gurley-Brown has lost none of her wit, bite, and robust appreciation for the carnal pleasures. I found her writing style quite charming, refreshing and ultimately very human. She admits to acting like a prima-donna on occasion (she is after all a successful business woman who is used to making things HAPPEN) but overall, she gives the impression of an intelligent and sensitive woman who's main goal is to share her hard-earned knowledge with the rest of us. There are some touching and very relate-able subjects. Now that I am over 50 years of age myself, I'm re-reading this book with an even greater understanding of the author's perspective; I find it still has a very contemporary appeal and is still a pleasure to read.

I am eager to learn more tips from this American Visionary, she really tells it like it is - nobody ever made being severely underweight and wearing pajamas on The Tonight Show With Johnny Carson look so good! I forgive her all over again for raving about her dinner with Ferdinand Marcos, she was just the victim of a prank played by Andy Warhol and/or the editors of Interview! It is all water under the bridge now!

I've been a fan of Helen Gurley Brown ever since I read Sex and the Single Girl back in my single days (I was around 34 when I read it). I felt like she was speaking directly to me. Now I'm 52 and not so excited about being in my 50s. I found this book very encouraging and also practical. I listened to it on Audible and it was read by the author. It was a great book to listen on my walks, in fact, she inspired me to keep moving and exercise as much as I can to stay young.

This was originally published in 1993 so it is very interesting to me to read something that was "timely advice" 25 years ago. It reads less as an advice book and more of a gossip column as Helen Gurley Brown shamelessly name-drops various friends and contacts that were relevant back in New York City in the 80's and 90's.

HGB was an absolute bad ass for her time and continues to inspire and awe this feminist reader. She still believed in happily ever after, but I love her sassiness and her independent and sexually-liberated spirit. Go on girl!!
