Who are the real monsters here? In this nasty little tale you'll soon learn that the greatest enemy of humans are humans. A group of survivors (there seems to be a kind of zombie pandemics going on) tries to occupy the home of an elderly woman. They threaten to kill her if she doesn't accept the new visitors. But things soon turn different for the young people. What about the son of the elderly woman? A very philosophical horror tale with an interesting twist. Highly recommended!

The name Lutzke will mean there is more to this story than you will initially think.

An engrossing and wonderful novelette by Chad Lutzke and Terry M. West. A not-your-typical zombie story. A group of four trudging through the forest, two brothers, an adult female and one other adult male, doing their best to stay alive, whatever it takes.
The real question is, who are the real monsters?
A quick read. Fantastic writing. A different take on a story we hear all too often. Shudder worthy. -

In an apocalyptic world where the undead far outnumber humanity, a small group of desperate survivors struggle to get by. Seeking out a place to call home, hoping to outlast the rotting remnants of diseased humans, they discover a shelter that might have a darker fate in store for them than that of the zombie apocalypse.
Never been let down by any of Lutzke's stories so far! After seeing this was a short story with a zombie apocalypse setting, I was expecting this to be not nearly as good as the others I've read by him so far. I was wrong. While not a huge fan of zombie stories, I was pleasantly surprised to find that this hardly focuses on the issue of the zombie plague at all, using it merely as a backdrop to show how the characters react to their surroundings in a world where law and order don't exist. The story is all about people showing their true colors when there are no legal repercussions or punishments for their actions. In other words, it's all about the him deep down.
In under 50 pages, there's an impressive level of character depth, intense drama and a shocking twist ending that drew unexpected parallels between the protagonist and the 'antagonist' if they can even be called that. Each has blood ties to a monster that causes them to do things they'd rather not to protect them, but not in a way one would expect. The him deep down comes out in all of them, creating a gruesome and emotional conclusion. A great novelette.

Lutzke has a way of tapping into the soul of a human being as he drags them through the most inhuman situations.
I've liked everything I've read by him so far. Creepy, dark, thought provoking, vivid. Already looking for the next one. -
It’s an atypical zombie novelette. What else would you expect with Chad Lutzke involved? Lutzke and West take this well-worn genre and breathe new life into it. Liked it a lot and not going to spoil it for you by saying anymore. Well worth the forty minutes it takes to read.

Maybe a little bit predictable? -
I read a lot of books and stories about zombies and apocalypse. These topics, when best written, are not about those things so much as the people involved. The individual tales of the people put into the situations that bring out the real inside they keep are the ones worth reading again and again because they make you wonder and discover what's really inside you. Who do you root for? Who would you associate with?

***You find in the very beginning that it's hard to root for the protagonists. Then you learn you haven't met the protagonist until halfway through the story!
I have a very specific rating system. Four stars for something I like enough to possibly read again some day. The five star review is reserved for the stories and books I intend to read again and again. If you're a writer there's much you can learn from The Him Deep Down. Five stars, hands down. -

The writing was not very good, and the worldbuilding straight out of Zombie Apocalypse 101. Most of all, I have mixed feelings about the Black characters in this novelette—on the one hand, was HELLA satisfying. On the other hand, with , The Him Deep Down played into dehumanizing stereotypes of savagery that felt tired and archaic at best, blatantly offensive at worst.

Thoroughly enjoyable horror story. One thing lost me a little bit, but the writing is gorgeous and the premise unique. I haven’t read West before, but Lutzke has yet to disappoint. The narrator is great.

I wanted so much more this story! It starts off as a typical zombie story and then it gets flipped on its head. I really loved it but I desperately wanted more of it!

Apocalypse survival brings out the best and the worst in people. This novelette explores family loyalty and what makes a person who they are deep down. Chad Lutzke and Terry M. West capture the feel of desperation necessary for the genre, but this is not a typical zombie story. There is more to it, indeed, deep down.

This dark story is an absolute pleasure to read. We've all read lots of post-apocalyptic fiction, but this book shows us sometimes the monsters aren't who we think they are. The characters and the tensions between them are expertly weaved. You are plunged into the story with immediate action and can't help but keep reading, rooting for the survivors. Creepy, gripping, highly recommended.

The Him Deep Down is a nicely done creepy and dark story about a small group of people during a zombie apocalyptic event. While there is some zombie action, Chad Lutzke does an excellent job looking at the human element. It's a quick, fast read but it doesn't skimp on the details or horrors encountered. Great horror novelette!!!

Not the zombie story you thought!
Well.. I almost closed this book on the first few paragraphs being a parent and all but I’m glad I didn’t! Fast moving snapshot story of a world overrun with zombies only for a group of survivors facing a horror worse than that! Family that sticks together has never been more terrifying! An inventive and dark take on a zombie story. As much as I enjoy West and Lutzke on their own, I feel this collaboration is even better. In this case, 1+1 is greater than 2.

Haven't read anything I haven't liked from Lutzke yet. He and West wrote together seamlessly. I'll have to check out some of West's books too. -

Great zombie short story. This took me around 1 hour to read. 5 🌟

This was a short story packing a big bite. A Zombie apocalypse tale with less to do with the Zombies and more do with the human character within. A showing of a persons true colors, if you will.
While trying to stay alive, Stephen, Andy’s little brother, shows some less than favorable traits, making the others in the group, including Andy, feel uneasy. Andy tries to brush his behavior off as a result of their current situation by saying “my brother is a good man, deep down. That’s not him inside,” all the while feeling that that isn’t actually the truth.
When the group comes across a small farmhouse and tries to overtake it, they get more than a few surprises and meet a true monster.. The Him Deep Down.
This was such a great story but to write more would be to spoil the whole thing. Just know it’s worth a read!

Never have I ever read a more disturbing opening scene / paragraph. You’re thrown into a short story of a group’s search of survival following a zombie-like plague that has taken over the world. Brothers, Andy and Steven, are on the move with new friends, Tim and Nikki. Something isn’t right with Steven as he finds satisfaction in death, pain and intimidation but Andy continues to makes excuses for him. The group stumbles on a barricaded farmhouse inhabited by a little old lady but they soon learn that she hides behind a facade to protect her own family. Emotions and true colors show when they (or anyone) are placed in a position to fight or flight. Sunsiray says it best as Andy learns a hard lesson, “We start to act like we are deep down. When there are no rules and laws, what we are inside comes out.”

My first foray into the world of audiobooks with this novelette and it kind of felt like a Walking Dead off cut for the majority. Andy, Tim, Steve and Nikki are looking for somewhere to settle in a zombie ridden world when they find an old farm house beyond some zombie traps.
There are a bit too many stereotypical zombie story traits throughout, but it has it's philosophical moments about the nature of man and violence that give it a spark.
The narration was good with clearly defined voices for the character's dialogue. I've a good few audiobooks to get to and they make a change while out for much needed walks right now. -
Violent, Fanatic to the Gore core and guess what I freaking loved it...
A group of survivors dealing with zombies in the woods of texas trying best to maintain their insanity. Andy, Steven, Tim, Nikki finally found themselves in a house where they met a black old women named Sunsiray. The main twist begins just from there. That would be there last nightmare in that house they could ever dream of...
Very short story to read but felt like a detail and complete horror work. In the future I gonna try more from these author...

Wow! This story sure did pack a punch. It went from being a story about a group of people trying to making it during a zombie outbreak to an all out shocking ending. I loved that, in true Lutzke style, there is more to this story than it seems. His stories seem to explore deeper and darker elements of human nature, and this one didn't disappoint.

This short is violent, ugly, and startling. Though nothing comes as a surprise in its duration, the ride is well written and designed. -
The world is in Shamblers.
Only the faithful will be able to survive on eggs and crackers.
An enjoyable little short from Lutzke and West.
