As for the magus himself, he is finally able to put a name to the strange emotion he's been feeling for Chise. Meanwhile, a deadly threat looms. When a panicked fairy appears at Chise's bedside, begging for help, is there anything the young, novice mage can do...?
The Ancient Magus Bride, Vol. 5 (The Ancient Magus Bride, #5) Reviews

The Ancient Magus’ Bride has a lovely balance of fae, magic and supernaturals. The artwork continues to be spectacular.
In Volume 5, we learn how Silky came to take care of Elias' home. I loved learning about Silky’s past and what she is.
We also get to go to the Fairy Kingdom, because something is wrong with Chise. Their we learn that the fae world changes mortals and that’s not what Elias wants for her. While she is their Chise must save her own life or drown. This moment was powerful and great progress for the character. I also liked that we continue to see Elias having to faces unfamiliar human emotions which make the reader feel too.
Last, Volume 5 was a sad read for me; because the old man, Joel, down the lane that Chise befriend has something very wrong with him and it’s tied to the fae living with him. It was such a sad moment.
This series continues to be quite enjoyable to read.

I reread volume 4 last night and also finished this. After a lot of the series I've started recently not clicking with me I went back to this previous favorite. I somehow forgot how magical this series is. Some very sad moments in this volume but it was also extremely enjoyable. This isn't a light series but it's not super dark and heavy all of the time either. I like the balance it strikes and I feel like it will never disappoint me.

Perspective of a Writer...
This is a review of volumes 3-6 which I read together back to back. See the plot section for my thoughts on the individual volumes.
We first meet Chise, chained by the neck and wrists being passed over to her new owner, a bone-headed mage whose name she learns later is Elias. A penniless orphan sold on the black market she learns about herself, the magical world filled with fairies and other fantastical creatures as well as what it means to be a part of a family. Her new life as a mage's apprentice is just the beginning as it comes with the secondary title of Ancient Magus' Bride...
To be honest the title is what first drew me to this series... but once I opened the first volume I was totally hooked!! It is crafted lovingly in my favorite type if manga art style. A modern, crisp and clean version of the big-eye style with a subtle ornateness that makes the entire style stand out. The humor is a little more subtle than other shonen series with the stark style rounding out into the cute Chibi style when emo moments happen. It's the best of both worlds! The creatures and magic are visually quite cool and add so much to what is a 2D world.
There is this lovely balance of fae, magic and the supernatural that works so well with the slice of life nature of the manga. We regularly start or end with quiet moments for regular life. The celebration of a holiday, the success in some studies and a chat with a new friend! Whatever is happening is a part of the fabric of Chise's life and helps us to understand her better and experience a little of what her life with Elias is like. I LOVE IT!! Chise is finally at home in the world, and as a result she is making friends and forming bonds... (and I love every one of those moments!) Most of all though I love Chise with Elias. He is awkward in the best of ways, doesn't understand the feelings that are arising and Chise herself only barely understands!
In volume 3, we see Elias get vulnerable protecting Chise and she has to reassure him. And then in volume 4, along with Chise, we learn some of his history with Lindel and what he has experienced with humans. Then in volume 5 we learn how Silky came to take care of Elias' home! And in volume 6 a friendship develops with a most unlikely alchemist apprentice! It's lovely and you never know when the dastardly Cartaphilus will appear or if it will simply be one of the dangerously amoral and beautiful fae who will threaten someone this time. It could be fae culture we're learning about or a deeply poignant moment between Chise and Elias we are experiencing. Whatever it is I'm engaged and loving it!
Over our head like an axe is always the knowledge that Chise is NOT safe. Not from the fae denizens, though Elias will protect her, not from the magic she is able to absorb. That tension runs through every single moment of the manga. You wonder when the next blood spurting moment will happen... if this time she won't be able to come back to herself... It makes the sweet moments sweeter and the dangerous moments more harrowing... Always the question lingers will Chise and Elias be able to reach the pinnacle of their relationship before her time is up?! That makes for a beautiful and emotional journey, of which I enjoy every second!
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Authenticity
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Tension
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Plot
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Art

Book: The Ancient Magus Bride, Volume 5
Author: Kore Yamazaki
Rating: 4 Out of 5 Stars
Once again, this manga does focus a lot on the characters and their growth, more so than the plot. This means that the plot is actually on the slower side. However, the amount of character growth and development that we get just adds so much to the overall world and story. This slow burn is normally something that I don’t go for. However, I find that it works for this series and works well.
I did find this one to be one the saddest of the series so far. It picks right off where Volume 4 left off. Chise is working to save Joel’s life with a potion that requires constant care and she isn’t allowed to have help. The work and care that she puts into this allows us to see more of her softer side. We already knew Chise was a softer character, but this really allows it to come across the page. We see just what she will do for those who she loves and cares about. We get this since of commitment and loyalty-even when she knew the odds were not in her favour. She still had to try to save someone who cared about. I really liked this. I know it may not have helped more the plot along all that much, but getting to see Chise in this element just made me love her character all that much more.
We also get to see more of Silky and learn about her backstory. Up until this point, she was just kind of a background character and housekeeper. By allowing us to get to experience how to got to where she is adds a whole other level. She is now not just a character hovering the background, but a character with a back story and depth. That is one thing the author is so good at, allowing characters without nothing to grow and allow us to understand what got them to this point.
The big thing about this volume is we finally get to the see the Fairy World. While fairies have been a big part in the series, we really haven’t gotten to see much of their world. Here, after the events with Joel and the potion making, we finally get to see what this world is about. Through most of it, Chise is asleep, but we still get to see the fairies healing powers and learn a little more about their world. The big thing is we learn about the time differences.
When Chise and Elias return home, its Yule. Chise has never celebrated Yule before so getting to see Elias explain all of the customs and traditions to her is great. We learn about magical powers and how different things mean different things in different cultures. Yeah, I know that was a lot of different in one sentence. This idea of having plants mean different things in other parts of the world was just really interesting to me. I like the idea that the author has taken into consideration that certain parts of the world don’t have the same plants. This, once again, just shows much more care and thought is put into each detail.
I really enjoyed this fifth volume and can’t wait to see where the series goes next. -
The Ancient Magus' Bride is an exceptional series. Silky's backstory was poignant and sweet. It's yuletide, so we delve more into the magical folklore. As always, I enjoy reading this story.

I honestly love this manga series! Everything is different and the plot changes in ways i never see coming at all. Love every single volume ^^

RESEÑA EN EL BLOG ➜
https://bit.ly/2UnU33o
This one was more of a builder, couple of side stories, still really good though! 😊4.5/5

Really enjoyed this volume and it's so perfect that part of it was about celebrating the yule-tide - great Christmas read. I really love this manga. The contrast between light and dark, and the rich old world fairy feel.
-
Gah I love this series so much!
-
It wasn't bad but there wasn't anything too special either.
-
It's not the story, it's me. I am not enjoying this as much as I did way back when I started and now it feels like some perverse sense of obligation to finish is what is keeping me going.
I have three more volumes from the library that I may return unread😳 or not. I feel like a break is on order. -
Still really enjoying this series, needs more romance though..
-
4/5* -
The art continues to improve, and there are plenty of great examples of movement in this one.
I also liked the Silky origin story, I hope we get to see more of her. -
I'm not sure why the decision to skip ahead to Yule. Interesting plant folklore.
-
Loving this series. This volume in particular was very sad but endearing at the same time. Love the milieu and the mechanics of how magic works.

So very good.

This series just keeps getting better... -
Autorka opäť prepojila viaceré postavy z minulých dielov v krásnych ilustráciách a hlavne v zaujímavých zvratoch.
Uvidíme, snáď a to čoskoro zmení. -
Volume five has Chise returning to the old man, Joel down the lane...something is terribly wrong with him and it's tied to the fae living with him. Chise decides to make fairy oil which stretches her beyond her limits and almost kills her. Elias has no choice but to bring her beyond the veil to the land of fae where the Queen tries to convince him this is the only way to save Chise...to keep her there forever. Except the fae world changes mortals and that's not what Elias wants for her. Chise must literally save her own life or drown and it was a nice moment of progression for her character. Elias again faces unfamiliar human emotions that makes the reader feel the same. The series is continuing to be quite lovely but I'm wondering at the prolonged absence of the villain, however.

I'm still really enjoying the story and the expansion of the world and characters. If I have one complaint is that the characters look so much alike and often its hard to differentiate between genders at all. Kind of glad the Magus had a Skull for a head cause you always know exactly who he is lol. I think they're relationship is cute though clearly the fae world has a different idea of what relationships should be like and I think Elias as someone trapped between both worlds is just as confused as ever and it makes it less creepy that he's hanging out with a young girl. The beginning part between the sidhe and the old man was just sweet and honestly beautiful.

I'm finding that this series' biggest strength is also it's biggest annoyance for me. Specifically, thus far it has no real plot to it. It's more of a set piece to explore fae lore. Which is great, but at the same time, you do find yourself wanting something more to dig your teeth into.

Felt a little bit like filler, but i loved Silky's chapter.
