A mixed bag by many authors, Reed nonetheless manages to weld wildly differing styles into a cohesive whole by some mad alchemy. Poems stand at right angles to this collection—lifting and lowering divine and profane, like the recorded dreams of prose protagonists, into a moving narrative. The result is fanciful and horrifying, isolating and communal, fusing natural and mechanical imagery into Frankensteinian chimera, granted wings only to be plucked apart feather by feather. An excellent effort all around, and well worth reading.
