I was pleasantly surprised by the craft of these stories. I liked the way Tudor has created these neat little worlds like literary Bento boxes which I couldn't help consume with relish.

Her characters are usually old, usually interesting and usually facing a big crisis that will change their lives. They are fringe characters who are not the focus of anyone's lives apart from their own.

Their stories matter because Tudor explores issues connected to people in an ageing society, something that all developed societies are starting to grapple with now.

As soon as I read the first sentence, I immediately recognised and loved this sense of calm that is so Japanese and so palpable throughout all the stories. Even tragic moments have this air of tranquility which I've come across only in Japanese writing.

If you love short stories and stories set in Japan, this is a book for you.

I came across this book whilst looking for Japanese authors and ended up getting exactly what I was hoping to read. The author seems to have the knack that I find many Japanese authors have of writing something beautifully subtle and turning objects and events of an every day nature into something engaging and special.

Will be keeping my eye out for more by Michelle Tudor!
