The DNA evidence should have made the rape a slam dunk case.

But after the evidence disappeared from a police locker, the man accused of brutally raping a popular actor’s daughter walked free. Hired by the actor, private eye Dan Reno’s job seemed simple enough: discover who took the DNA, and why. Problem is, from the beginning of the investigation, neither Reno, the South Lake Tahoe police, nor anyone else have any idea what the motivation could be to see ghetto thug Duante Tucker get away with the crime. Not even Reno’s best friend, fellow investigator Cody Gibbons, has a clue.

When Reno and Gibbons tail Tucker, they learn the rapist is linked to various criminals and even a deserter from the U.S. Marine Corps. But they still can’t tell who would want him set free, and for what reason?

Things get murkier when Tucker visits a restaurant whose owners are suspected terrorists. Then Cody’s ex-boss, a San Jose police captain, is found to be dallying with Tucker’s sister.

The clues continue to build until Reno and Cody find themselves targeted for death. That tells Reno he’s getting close, so he and Gibbons put the pedal to the metal. The forces of evil are running out of time, and the action reaches a boiling point before an explosive conclusion that reveals a sinister plot and motivations that Reno never imagined.

Hard Prejudice (Dan Reno, #5) Reviews

I had almost forgotten how good this series is and that I had more books to read. Hard Prejudice by Dave Stanton is another rough private detective story with Dan Reno. In this one he is trying to find out how a rapist got acquitted in court with witnesses going missing and DNA evidence disappearing. This turns out to be so much more and thankfully he has his old pal Cody to help him out. These books are a bit raw and riugh, at least when it comes to how you handle crooks. Not to mention a healthy dose of corrupt policemen and rich people who think they are worth more than others. I really like this series.

A wonderful, timely story of private investigator Dan Reno and his pal Cody Gibbons, as they take a case about a young woman who is viciously raped and brutalized by a man who then goes free at trial. The witnesses for the prosecution changed story or disappeared , and the DNA evidence, a point blank proof of the man's involvement, was somehow removed from the police lock-up. The father of the woman hires Dan and Cody to find out who assisted the perpetrator. As their investigation unfolds there is a second plot mixed into this in which heroin and C2 (explosion device) are involved. The characters are great, we follow awesome scenes in which conversation is real and sites well-described. This is a fast moving story that is easy to read and keeps your interest from start to finish. I love all the Dan Reno stories!

Whilst Hard Prejudice may be the fifth book in the series, it reads easily as a stand alone.

Dan and Cody have really grown on me through this series. They are like family and I can see quite a difference, in Dan especially, since the first book. Whilst Cody is still very much enjoying the single life, Dan is settling down thanks to the lovely Candi.

I won’t lie, some parts make for uncomfortable reading. A storyline to do with rape is never going to be an easy one. Whilst we get to see some of the devastation it leaves in its wake for the victim and her family, the story very much centres on Dan and Cody trying to find the culprit as well as the people behind fiddling with the evidence in the trial.

The case really takes some unexpected twists and turns that keeps the reader on their toes. I enjoyed how the author plays with us so things arn’t quite as straight forward as they seem.

Hard Prejudice is a slightly more sombre addition to the series due to the nature of the story line. Packed to the brim with tension and action, Hard Prejudice makes for a thrilling and adrenaline fuelled read.

My thanks to Bloodhound Books and NetGalley for an advanced readers copy of this book. All opinions are my own and not biased in anyway.

Happy Publication Day! Hard Prejudice is book five in the brilliant Dan Reno series. I have been enjoying this series from the start and would highly recommend this whole series to you all. This series is best read in order.

It was great to be back in Dan’s world alongside Cody working with him aswell. Its been fun watching them both work and grow together throughout the series. Will they catch the rapist? Fast paced, thrilling story. Loved reading this one. It does contain long chapters though! It is a tough story to read in certain parts, with dark scenes as the story is dealing with a rape… Nevertheless, I still enjoyed reading this story and look forward to the final chapter of this series.

    Hard Prejudice by Dave Stanton
    Dan Reno #5

Dan Reno, Private Investigator, is a man who takes cases many would not. He always goes in with good intentions but often finds himself up against some tough customers. Cody Gibbons, a friend from high school and also a PI, often ends up working with Dan on the same case. Having only read this and the previous book in the series I have to say that I am hooked. Sure, there is violence and some might consider some actions questionable but when it comes down to it Dan does have a moral compass and does “feel” when he is required to do something that he wishes had not been necessary to sustain his own or a loved one’s life.

This book hits close to home for me…in more ways than one. I know the places mentioned in the book and have driven through more than one of them. I remember the riots that in Los Angeles that were mentioned. I have lived in countries in the Middle East that have been impacted by war, bombs and strife and understand the fear of this reaching into and being experienced by those living in the West.

Dan and Cody are asked to find out who “lost” evidence in a trial. The trial was one in which a sadistic rapist got off due to the loss of the DNA that was necessary for conviction. While searching for the person responsible trips are taken to various cities in California and research is also carried out in Tahoe. There are car chases, shootouts, corrupt cops, prostitutes, gangsters, drug dealers, possible jihadists, explosions and other violence that occurs but throughout it all I was aware of the true friendship between Dan and Cody that is as close as if not closer than that of many brothers.

I think one of the main takeaways for me is that evil people are everywhere in the world and they no doubt always will be. There is no one cause for their being in the world or a solution for eradication of them. The fact that Dan and Cody and some of their friends, acquaintances and colleagues deal with such people and come out scathed but still positive makes for a solid story worth reading. I look forward to reading more by this author in the future.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bloodhound Books for the ARC – This is my honest review.

    5 Stars

The 5th in the Dan Reno, private eye series.
Dan and his buddy Cody are both hired by a Hollywood producer to find out who raped his daughter.
The producer would be thrilled if the rapist gets killed in the process.
Dan and Cody start to try and find out why the DNA evidence disappeared from the evidence locker at the local police station and the rapist walked away scot free.
The case gets bigger and stranger as they go along. The rapist is tied to various other criminals and a deserter from the Army who is suspected of terrorist acts and drug smuggling.
Meanwhile, Cody's ex-boss and Captain of the San Jose police is found having sex with a hooker-who just happens to to be the sister of the rapist.
They have lots of clues but no solution. However, they know they must be getting close since they are now targeted to be killed.
    LOts of action.

I really enjoyed this book, I have read all of the books in the series so far (it is a very good series by the way) and this is probably my favourite!

Whilst it is the fifth book in the series, you can easily read it as a stand alone, but if you do get the chance to read the other books I'd definitely recommend them!

The storyline in this one is tough and not everyone will enjoy it but I thought it was a well put together story, I really enjoyed the characters and I thought the whole book was excellent and I was gripped by the plot.

4.5 stars from me rounded up to 5 stars for Goodreads and Amazon!

Private investigator Dan Reno – that’s Reno as in no problemo – quite the promo line for a no holds barred, take no prisoners type of PI. In Dan Reno, author Dave Stanton has created a complex character who thinks nothing of hanging the bad guys out over a cliff to get some answers but at the same time experiences uncomfortable inner thoughts and haunting dreams.

This is my first Dan Reno novel and I had no trouble catching up on the investigator’s life and past exploits. Starting in on this series is doable from any point. This author caught my interest with an early metaphor – eyes brittle as puddles of ice. Just words – right? But oh the way they are arranged. Well done.

A few times I thought Dan jumped to conclusions that I couldn’t see justified in terms of their investigative findings. There were also some philosophizing on the nature and state of the world that I could have done without.

Even if you aren’t in this novel for the jam-packed action, car chases, smack-downs with the various bad guys, steamy descriptions of attractive ladies and the quick as lightening repartee between Reno and his counterpart PI, Cody – the landscape depictions are breathtaking. I love the area around Lake Tahoe travelling through to San Jose and Reno is on a case that requires more than a couple of trips back and forth. Pines rise like black ghosts, the sun sets like a jagged chunk of white-hot steel and clouds turn silver and blood red as they break up like sheets of glass shattering in slow motion.

All and all, an action-packed thriller that delivered the goods.

For the genre, this was a good book. There were just enough characters to make the story interesting without overwhelming the reader. Action? Yes! Dan Reno killed at least eight villains and was nearly killed several times himself. As a bonus, most of the story takes place in beautiful South Lake Tahoe where we have spent lots of time. Thank you Dave Stanton for another action packed story!

Well what a series this has been so far and I can't believe we are now on book five. I have enjoyed each book featuring Dan Reno and it would be difficult to pick a favourite. Even though Hard Prejudice is part of a series I would still class it as a standalone as the characters history is weaved into this story easily which helps to avoid any confusion. However what I will say is that all of the books are worth reading and you will obviously get a deeper background on the characters if you do start at the beginning.

As ever Dan and Cody find themselves in trouble but they work so well as a team that it really makes this book all the more exciting. In this story both Dan and Cody are hired to find a rapist, as you would expect with this storyline there is going to be some darker content. It definitely provides an edge along with a tense and action packed plot that I have come to expect from this series.

The pacing was pretty good and at times very fast paced, there were parts where I was glued to my kindle as Dan and Cody found themselves right in the thick of it. In Hard Prejudice danger and trouble finds Dan Reno but what a story it makes!

    Four stars from me!

With thanks to Sarah at Bloodhound Books for my copy. This is my honest and unbiased opinion.

I haven't read any of the other books in this series so started reading worrying whether coming in at book number 5 was a mistake I am happy to say ... it wasn't ... it can easily be read as a standalone.

Well written at great pace with action and intrigue aplenty, this book is great. It does deal with the uncomfortable subject of rape and, I have to warn you, there is a particularly grim and disturbing section but this can't be avoided and helps to put you in the mindset of the main characters of Dan and Cody who go to great lengths to get justice.

This is a gritty read that pulls no punches and I would most definitely recommend to anyone who enjoys a a book that has non-stop action.

Thank you to Bloodhound Books for my copy in return for an unbiased review.

Ah, Dan Reno, how I adore you stories (and not just because of the setting, being a California girl myself)! I’ve been keeping up with the Dan Reno novels since Stateline, but this is the first time I’ve been on the blog tour for one! Although it can be read as a standalone, it definitely helps to know the background of Private Investigator Dan Reno, so definitely start with the first book. As always, Stanton does not disappoint. From beginning to end, I was completely hooked. The characters may seem a bit over the top at times, but it works. Also, Stanton clearly knows his locations as everything is described accurately. I absolutely cannot wait for the next novel!

  • Leigh

Dan Reno is a tough-guy private eye, who teams up with side-kick Cody Gibbons to investigate a serious miscarriage of justice.

Sadly, and although I usually like this genre (and I did read to the end), I never really got into this book. It seemed to be full of race, breasts, and testosterone, which just got wearing for me. There were also two bizarre re-tellings of real-life events, (neither of which seemed to add anything to the story), and a weird political-philosophical brain-dump in the epilogue.

I wanted to like it more.

Quick Summary: Dan Reno is hired by a Hollywood Actor to gain justice for the culprit that raped his daughter. However when the DNA evidence is missing from evidence lockers Dan and his trusted buddy Cody go down the rabbit hole far deeper than their previous adventures.

What I like about Dave's novels is that these cases seem real, however in this case the scum are involved in disturbing the national security without the CIA or FBI having any clue of it. How is this possible, disappointed in the same. Hopefully the next one is better

  • Mary

Dan's girlfriend had to go out of town a few weeks for her job. Cody was in town for the. job he and Dan were both hired for and stayed at Dan's. A young White girl was brutally raped and beaten by a Black man. His trial should've been a slam dunk until both eye witnesses were no shows and the DNA evidence disappeared from the Police evidence room. They find not only police corruption, but drug gangs and their lives threatened. Keeps you intent to the last page.

    Fabulous!

Well, this is the fifth Dan 'no problemo' Reno novel I have read. They just keep getting BETTER. This one was a great adventure with some of the oddest and psycho sicko bad guys ever! I loved it. I am also loving the changes and evolution of Dan. On to the next.....hope there are more coming. Thank you, Dave!

    Excellent

Another hit out of the ballpark. Two very interesting characters save little pieces of the world in their own design. Thrilling, cliffhanger chapters and very real characters.
Another ace write from this author.

    Life is never boring!

The life of a private investigator is dangerous boring at times, fast paced, which ends up making you an insomniac. True to form Dan Reno's life is all of the previous. Except he had someone who loves him regardless.

Another great Dan Reno book thanks to bloodhound books and net galley.

    Great story!

There are so many typos, spelling and grammatical errors, but the book offers a great story. I love Dan Reno and Cody!!

This was my first foray into the Dan Reno series, so my knowledge of the characters started off here. In this explosive thriller, readers meet a cast of vigilante-style investigators as PI Reno and Gibbons follow a string of odd leads following a rape case. However, with each eruptive interrogation, things heat up and Reno uncovers more questions than answers. The events conjure an emotional trigger for Reno as his “brokenness” unravels throughout the story—making readers want to know more back story to this protagonist. He’s a complex man full of passion and rebellion against the law, but all in the name of justice. Packed with enough action to throw readers breathlessly from one chapter to the next—including a suspicion of terrorist activity and political intrigue—it’s a little of everything: noir, political thriller, and hard-boiled detective with a dose of police procedural. If you like classic thrillers with a sharp edge to them, you’ll enjoy this one immensely.
