I love this Houghton-Mifflin series for learning to read. This book contains previously published picture books and poetry. I would recommend for ages five through seven.
One of the stories "Me on the Map" sort of assumes that your child is American since the story is based on the map of the U.S. (It would still work if your child is not American, though.)
