Jagermeister Walking Reviews

Poetry darkened by psyches in distress and damaged anatomy, startlingly breaking into light with bright flashes of passion and titillation. The wording provides vivid illustrations.

Donald Armfield uses evocative horror imagery to good effect in this short collection of poetry (I particularly liked the miniscule goat mean banging on his ear drums), and I found myself wondering whether it stemmed from simple interest in the horror genre or from personal experience of demonic-like visions; either from meditative spiritual awareness or from drug-induced occurrences. I’m still not sure of the answer as to how metaphorical these poems are, but maybe it doesn’t matter. What does matter is that the author made me question such things during my reading of Jagermeister Walking. But it’s not all horror – there’s also a lot of Armfield’s personal take on the human existence, the infinite world, and everydayness; including themes of nature, memories and sex.

For me, some poems worked better than others, and I felt that more care could have been taken in the construction and editing, but overall this was an interesting read.

The poem Jagermeister Walking was probably my favourite, which begins: “Jagermeister Walking/Although I’m not following/a deer./It’s the reflection,/casting off the water./The treescape that dwells/around me./Doesn’t show the reflection/that I’m following/in the lake’s mirror.”

Interesting collection of poetry. Some evocative imagery. Not perfect, but solidly good. Worth reading if you enjoy dark, blank verse poetry.
