Pretty but not very beneficial to me as a new gardener.

This is a solid garden design reference book and also completely gorgeous. It provides a good overview of all the basic design principles (size, shape, color, scent, purpose, placement, etc.) and different garden styles. It explains a bit of color theory, which I found helpful, and has sample garden plots that you can use wholesale or piecemeal.
