Great book to read to children. It leads to a lot of discussion about oxygen tanks and how heavy the packs are that were being carried up to Mt Everest. Well worth reading to a class.

In the story, it explained the experiences Hillary had while climbing mountains. He wasn't a climber at first, but the story then explained how he got the chance to be one of those that was the first to climb to the top of Mount Everest. It describes his lifetime and I would recommend this non-fiction book to everyone because unlike other non-fiction books, this one has actions and scenes that are really interesting and enjoyable for the reader.

First to the Top David Hill and Phoebe Morris

Then Ed looked up. There was more sky above them than before. The ridge ended in a round dome a few meters away. They took deep breaths, cut the last steps, and…’

We all have heard of Edmund Hillary at some point in life but young kids may not know and this exceptionally beautiful book written by David Hill and illustrated Phoebe Morris is an excellent way to get your children read about the legends who through their sheer courage and determination cross the limits and dares to touch the sky!

David Hill’s ‘First to the Top”is a beautifully illustrated life story of Great Sir Edmund Hillary from the shy little boy of the town of Tuakau, to his world famous mountaineering feat on 29th May 1953. Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay were the first two people to defy the limits of mortality stand on the top the world’s highest mountain of Mt Everest.

What I liked about the Book?

The first thing that captured my heart was the sheer delight on my 7 yrs. old nephew’s face after looking at Phoebe’s illustrations. She has perfectly captured the emotions of Hillary on each page and the Himalayas never looked so beautiful.

And David’s retelling of Edmund Hillary’s life is enchanting. It hooked me and my nephew with delightful gasps of amazement at near-death experience of Edmund and Tenzing Norgay saving him and gasp of delight came when they reached the top of the summit. The Author made sure to make the story easy for a kid to understand yet it be gripping.

The book isn’t cluttered. In fact, it is hardly 50 pages long, but it has a dearth of facts and information amalgamated with beautiful illustrations by Phoebe, which makes it excellent read for kids.

What I didn’t like about books?

There was nothing that I did not like.

    Do I recommend this book?

It’s a perfect read for 4-8 yrs. old kids, in fact I’d rather say that it’s quite an interesting read even for an adult like me. This book has captured my heart in so less pages. So yes this a must read for every kid.

This story is a real-life account of the adventures Sir Edmund and the Sherpa Tenzing Norgay had together. It highlights the importance of trust, friendship and determination in life. The book is suitable for small kids who know basic sentences. The narrative has the potential to urge the children to ask more questions about Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary.

I thought it was a great book, because it shoes that the most shy or weak people can end up doing great things just like Edmund Hillary. This book was inspirational because it is about the unbelievable climb to Mount Everest (tallest mountain ever) They make it to the peak and they become one of the most famous people in the world. This is a great book for kids who want books about adventure. The only reason its not a five because it is a very short book and I wish it was longer.

This picture book biography tells about the incredible accomplishments of Sir Edmund Hillary. His passion for exploring and climbing mountains started at a young age and he is now a world famous mountaineer/adventurer. The book details his climb to the top of Mt. Everest in May of 1953 and the several attempts he made before actually reaching the top. Courage and determination are themes which are very evident throughout the book. I appreciated the format of the text and the colorful illustrations. The text was formatted to appear to have movement as Sir Edmund Hillary climbed and descended peaks. This would be a good read for elementary school kids who are seeking to read an inspiring story and learn about a famous adventurer. Because this is a biography, I would have liked to see a bibliography/references section at the end of the book to ensure credibility of the author. I found the information provided throughout the book very interesting and was a bit disappointed to see there weren't any sources listed by the author.

This exceptional picture book, written by internationally acclaimed children's author David Hill and illustrated by Phoebe Morris doesn't have that chest thumping ways of talking about courage and determination.
Recommend this book for all kids!
(Ideal age would be 7+ year kids so that they get the concept of mountaineering and ask relevant questions well)

One of the 2016 NZ Children's and Young People's Book finalists. A great life story book about a famous New Zealander. It is illustrated beautifully and includes a great timeline of his life. Would be great as a shared story or for a unit study research book.
