Though it would certainly be unkind to give false assurance of salvation to someone who has not been truly converted, it would be equally cruel to withhold comfort and assurance to a weak lamb who suffers with despair over his spiritual state. In his spiritual classic Human Nature in Its Fourfold State, Thomas Boston lists eight "cases" where a true Christian might have spiritual doubts about the authenticity of his faith. Such doubts, Boston notes, "may hinder some persons from the comfortable view of their happy state." Thus, he writes to encourage, comfort, and assure those saints who are burdened with such doubts.

This is a short book in almost a pamphlet style. It took me less than half an hour to read it and I found each of the eight points to be thoughtful and appropriate. A current minister has updated some of the 1700s language, so I can't speak to whether or not some of the content has also been edited, but it flows well and retains the rhythm of the older language. I got it for free on the iBooks app, though it appears to be a paid copy on Kindle. Since it is very short, it doesn't give more than a summary of each point; some seem to be rather strict, but others balance out the perspective, so the eight points should be taken as a whole package.

Apparently Boston was a Calvinist, but he wasn't an extreme one, and that perspective does not bleed through into this short work. Recommended to anyone who wishes to be ready to give a good answer to others and to anyone who has doubted their salvation.

This book offers thought-out and reasonable answers to some sincere questions which believers might have.
